There's no denying that sailors are certainly a passionate bunch. We’re so passionate about our boats that we always try going for the best sailboats. To make it a lot easier for you, here are the best sailboat brands.
Owning a sailboat is an indulgence that many of us only dream about but very few ever have the privilege of sailing the seas in what they can actually call their own.
While there's nothing wrong with renting a sailboat, the honor of owning one is certain what many sailors dream of.
With a perfectly crafted sailboat as company, gliding through the water, waves, and wind brings some sort of unmatched comfort and peace.
Add this to the fact that sailing takes you far away from the daily hustles and bustles that we've become accustomed to in our daily lives and you'll see why the life of sailing is very appealing to the masses.
But without a proper sailboat, all this fun and the good life of sailing are thrown out of the window.
Contrary to the widespread opinion, owning a sailboat isn't beyond anyone's reach. It's something that we can all achieve. But before getting into that, it's important to know some of the best sailboat brands.
The best sailboat brands will make your life as a sailor a lot easier and more fun. The best sailboat brands have, for decades if not centuries, mastered the art of woodworking. They've dedicated their skills and immense amount of their time to designing and manufacturing nothing but the best quality of sailboats in the industry.
So if you've been looking for the best sailboat brands from all over the world, you've come to the right place. We'll discuss the best of the best, something that will give you a perfect getaway from your normal life.
Table of contents
Must-Have Features for Your Sailboat
Before highlighting the best sailboat brands, it would be appropriate to jog your mind a little with some of the features that must be available in your sailboat.
Choosing a sailboat can sometimes be a matter of compromises. In other words, it's sometimes sensible to accept that a sailboat cannot have all the features that you desire.
As such, it's all about going with a sailboat that has the features that matter to you most.
For this reason, let's look at the most basic features that can make the difference in both safety and comfort while improving your sailing experience.
A Safe and Comfortable Sailing Cockpit
You'll most definitely be spending a huge amount of time in the cockpit. Whether you're keeping watch, trimming sails , helming, or just enjoying the scenery, there's no better place to do all these than from the cockpit. That being said, a good cockpit should have the following.
- Have a good depth for safety reasons and adequate drainage
- Should give you a quick and easy access to jammers, cleats, and other important parts of the winch system
- Should have a seat or seats that are about 35 cm high, 50 to 55 cm wide to provide ideal support
- The seats should be adjustable to offer maximum comfort and allow you to change your position
GPS Chartplotter
Use a GPS Chartplotter once and your sailing will never be the same without it. It not only allows you to map a course but is also a great way of ensuring that your sailboat exactly follows that course. It also gives you constant updates on ocean conditions, weather conditions , and potential hazards such as deadly currents and sandbars.
A GPS Chartplotter is also an important safety device that can help you in some very critical situations while out there on the water.
For instance, it has a man-overboard button that is essentially meant to allow you to receive coordinates of the exact location should someone fall off your boat.
Electric Winch System
This is an amazing addition to any sailboat. It allows you to sheet a jib even in high and strong winds with a simple press of a button. It also gives you the chance of trimming a mainsail easily while still carry out other essential tasks in the sailboat.
An electric winch system can be of great importance, especially if you're short on crew. This is because it can free up some crew members to carry other important tasks. In other words, it can make duties that would otherwise require more crew members a lot easier.
More importantly, an electric winch system can maintain safety even in the roughest of conditions, thereby preventing you and your crew from getting injured. In essence, an electric winch system will make your sailing a lot safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.
Reverse Osmosis Watermaker
This is a very valuable accessory, especially if you're going on long sea voyages. You can spend days on end without drinking clean and safe water.
As the name suggests, you can use this accessory to turn seawater into purified drinking water. It uses the reverse osmosis method that's essential not only in removing bacteria and parasites from the water but also in turning the water into purified and safe drinking water.
Even though this device is pricey, it's a great way to mitigate the over-reliance on huge water tanks. All you have to do is to ensure that it's properly maintained and you'll have an endless streak of safe drinking water no matter where you are.
Wide and Clutter-free Deck
While the deck is often an overlooked feature of a sailboat, it can be the difference between a great sailing experience and a stressful one. In essence, the deck of a sailboat should be wide enough and clutter-free.
This is significant as it can enable you to quickly access different parts of your sailboat with hindrance or getting tangled. As you can see, this is particularly important in improving safety and reducing stress.
With that in mind, make sure that the deck is organized in such a way that you can have easy access to sails, masts, and winches.
You should, therefore, avoid sailboats with decks that are designed in such a way that you have to climb on top of the cabin just to access these features. Needless to say, this can be quite unstable and very dangerous especially when conditions are rough.

Buyer’s Guide to Choosing the Best Sailboats
Sailboats don’t come cheap. So, if you end up buying the wrong one, well, let’s just say you’re stuck with it. It is, therefore, very important that you take your time and apply some logic to avoid regret later on. Here are the major factors you need to consider when choosing the best sailboats.
1. Size of the Boat
The first thing you need to consider is the size of the boat you need. Do you intend to be cruising in the company of friends and family, or do you plan to do it by yourself?
Will you have a crew with you when you embark on your sailing expeditions, or will it be purely for entertainment? Will you be living in your boat full-time, or do you intend to use it only on the weekends?
The answers to these questions will determine the size of the boat you’ll need.
Bigger Isn’t Always Better
Many first-time boat buyers often make the mistake of thinking that getting a large boat is the best decision since they plan to have it for decades to come. They look for one that will meet every single one of their present and future needs. Here are a couple of reasons why bigger isn’t always better when buying a sailboat.
- Safety considerations – You require a substantial amount of skill to operate a large boat. If you’re not all that skilled and end up purchasing a big boat, you’re essentially endangering your life and that of the other boaters.
- Learning curve – It’s easier to pick up on the nuances of operating a smaller sailboat than it is a larger one since the feedback you get is almost instant. This makes it easier to learn as you work your way up to larger vessels. The learning curve on a big boat, however, is pretty steep, and critical errors can cost you a lot more than you bargained for.
- Associated costs – The rule of thumb to remember is: The larger a boat is, the higher its associated costs will be. Don’t buy a boat designed for the open seas if you intend to be using it on small bays.
- Low resale value – There’s also the risk of buying a boat that’s too big, only to regret your decision a few short sails later. The unfortunate reality is – you might be stuck with it for several years to come since it’s quite difficult to sell large vessels.
2. Boating Location
Next, you need to think about is – where you’ll be boating. Sailing on Lake Michigan, for instance, is vastly different from sailing on the Atlantic. The same logic applies when boating on smaller rivers.
If the water isn’t deep enough, based on how far down into the water your keel goes, let’s just say you’ll be in for an unpleasant grounding experience. You need to pick the right vessel for the environment you’ll be sailing in.
3. Boating Experience
If this is your first-ever sailboat (or any boat for that matter), then going with a large model is probably not the best thing. We’ve all heard the horror stories of people who purchased boats that were too big, only for them to end up losing control of their vessels in the open water.
We recommend starting small and working your way up from here as you gain more experience.
4. Use of the Boat
We touched a bit on this in the preceding sections. But, in this case, we mean “use” in reference to your budget.
If you want to buy a sailboat primarily for entertaining, then you need to get one that’s large enough to host the number of people you intend to have onboard. Keep in mind, though, that it may be at the expense of certain luxury, convenience, and comfort features.
Likewise, you might find a sailboat with loads of useful amenities, but without enough space to accommodate the people who might enjoy them. There’s no point in buying a boat that comes with a kitchen and grilling station, but without enough room to accommodate the number of people who might enjoy fresh grilled fish. Or maybe you want a boat that only you will use – in which case you may prefer one with a comfortable and attractive cockpit for yourself, seeing as you’ll be the main person enjoying it.
Size generally trumps luxury when buying a sailboat. Then again – it depends on what you intend to use it for.
5. New vs. Used Sailboats
The other thing you need to think about is whether you’re buying a new or used sailboat. Each option has its own set of pros and cons. For one thing, buying a brand new boat means that it’s ready to hit the open waters the moment you own it.
On the other hand, buying a used sailboat means that you may have to make repairs and upgrades before you can set sail. You also have to think about the costs associated with such repairs and the time required to do all the legwork to get the right gear.
So, ensure that you factor in these costs when coming up with your boat budget. That way, you’ll be able to tell if it makes sense to buy a new boat versus a used one, based on the overall cost for each. Don’t buy a lemon that turns into an infinite money-pit all in the name of saving a couple of bucks.
What to Check for When Buying a Used Sailboat
If you’re going the previously-owned route, here are a couple of things you need to check for before you sign on the dotted line.
- Deck and hull – Check that the deck and hull are dry and intact. If not, you’ll have to budget for repairs if you go ahead with the purchase.
- Electrical work – Rewiring a boat is a very complex and expensive process. Get a certified electrician to examine the existing electrical work before you buy a used boat.
- Engine – It’s always a good idea to bring a mechanic onboard during the purchase process just to make sure that everything is in excellent working condition. They are better-placed to give you a true picture of the boat’s existing state.
- Safety equipment – Last but not least, you need to keep in mind that insurance service providers usually require sailboats to have a minimum amount of safety equipment onboard. If anything is missing from the boat you’re about to purchase, you will need to buy them, which will no doubt drive up the cost.
6. Recurring Costs
The recurring costs associated with owning a sailboat aren’t exactly cheap. Buying the vessel is only one part of the process.
You’ll need to pay for insurance, which is more expensive for larger boats. You also need to think about storage costs if you don’t own property on the waterfront. There’s also the cost of docking and mooring at the various locations you visit.
So, when calculating your overall budget, don’t forget to factor in these costs as well.
Research, Research, Research
When looking for the best sailboats, ensure that you do your homework. Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for years of additional expenses, work, stress, and heartache.
Get something ideal for your needs and won’t take up too many resources in maintenance and upkeep. All in all, with the right sailboat, you’re in for one helluva ride! Any of the 9 best sailboats detailed in this guide are excellent options worth looking into.

8 Great New Sailboats for 2022
Table of Contents
Fall boat shows highlight the latest launches, and there’s much to see if you’re contemplating purchasing a new sailboat. Whether monohull, catamaran or trimaran, exciting new designs are landing on US shores from Europe and South Africa. Here’s a preview of what you’ll be seeing on the water soon – maybe even in peer-to-peer rental programs like Boatsetter .
- Beneteau Oceanis 34.1
- Balance Catamarans 442
- Nautitech 44 Open
- Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

1. Beneteau Oceanis 34.1
Beneteau’s Oceanis 34.1 shed 2,000 pounds and a few inches on the beam over her predecessor and added 29% more sail area for better performance in light air. There are three keel options, including a hydraulically lifting keel (4’ 1” – 8’ 4” with no bulb) that will deliver good performance. Outfitting is versatile with three levels of sail packages available, including the highest “Upwind/Downwind” option that includes a Code 0, extra winches and jammers, and a bowsprit. Now you can really get this little demon going.
- Estimated MSRP :$188,000

2. Dufour 37
The Dufour 37 borrows many features from her bigger sibling, the Dufour 470, including the bowsprit, large hatches, and a fantastic deck layout. This model also has an all new hull with a greater power/weight ratio and a taller mast for an increased sail area and better performance. Like her predecessor, the Dufour 360, the 37 has a single rudder , so she’s lively and responsive, but she still sports twin wheels for a friendlier cockpit layout. Her LOA is below 37 feet, but you’d never know it in how she feels on deck or below or in how she sails.
- Estimated MSRP :$275,000

3. Hanse 460
The Hanse 460 looks like a speed demon and sails like a witch, but she’s quite a comfortable family cruiser. With accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins, the 460 will perfectly fit private ownership and charter. A self-tacking jib simplifies short-handed sailing, but her 1,227 square feet of sail and a slippery hull designed by Berret-Racoupeau will make her a contender in club competitions. Best of all, her beam and integrated hardtop provide protection from the elements and make her feel almost like a catamaran.
- Estimated MSRP :$284,000
Visit Hanse Yachts to Learn More
4. Balance Catamarans 442
The 442 is Balance Catamarans’ latest answer to a performance multihull designed to carry a good turn of speed on all points of sail, including upwind with the foiled daggerboards. A self-tacking rig and 1,205 square feet of sail area guarantee easy sailing with good light wind performance. Rumor has it that 30 orders were taken before the first unit was out of the factory, so there’s much buzz around this new model from South Africa. The VersaHelm is the star feature where you can drive from up high or down low where it’s warm and dry.
- Estimated MSRP :$820,000
Visit Balance Catamarans to Learn More
5. Nautitech 44 Open
Naval architect Marc Lombard teamed with designer Christophe Chedal Anglay to create the new Nautitech 44 Open cat and it’s one good-looking boat. The bows are curved and slightly reversed, there are dual chines on the hulls, the windows are angular, and the coachroof is low, sleek, and angled upward in the aft sections, an effect that adds the perception of movement even at rest. Able to sail 9-10 knots in 15-20 knots of true wind, this bluewater cat will keep owners happy around the harbor or around the globe.
- Estimated MSRP :$622,000
Visit Nautitech Catamarans to Learn More
6. Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47
A truly spacious cat, the Tanna 47 is all about the room, from the large cabins to the inviting main deck and up to the enhanced flybridge . The new design is made for large groups, and she’s bound to be a hit in the charter, especially with her large solar panel array that will keep all the toys and refrigeration humming. Cabin arrangements are flexible, from an owner’s version with a sumptuous suite to a five-cabin layout that will easily accommodate ten guests.
- Estimated MSRP :$1,051,000
Visit Fountaine Catamarans to Learn More
7. Lagoon 55
With the new Lagoon 55 (the last 55 was launched 35 years ago), naval architects VPLP (the same one used for the original 55) teamed with designer Patrick Le Quément to dial in a good-looking boat with lots of amenities and lounge areas. This model replaces the popular Lagoon 52, and she’s all about big boat entertaining from the flybridge to the foredeck. Up to 12 can be seated for dinner, and the entire cockpit is designed to encourage relaxing and watching the world in your wake .
- Estimated MSRP :$2,500,000
Visit Lagoon Boats to Learn More
When even two hulls aren’t enough, consider a trimaran like the swanky Neel 43. This French builder has turned the concept of cruising trimarans on its ear with a spacious multihull that reels off the miles since it’s 6,000 pounds lighter than most cats of the same length. She’ll sail 10 knots in a 14- knot breeze with a lower wetted surface area, especially when the windward ama lifts clear of the waves. Accommodations include three cabins, a single head , and the option to upgrade to a 48-volt power system with lithium batteries and an Integral alternator that eliminates the need for a traditional generator.
- Estimated MSRP :$398,000

40 Best Sailboats
- By Cruising World Editors
- Updated: April 18, 2019
Sailors are certainly passionate about their boats, and if you doubt that bold statement, try posting an article dubbed “ 40 Best Sailboats ” and see what happens.
Barely had the list gone live, when one reader responded, “Where do I begin? So many glaring omissions!” Like scores of others, he listed a number of sailboats and brands that we were too stupid to think of, but unlike some, he did sign off on a somewhat upbeat note: “If it weren’t for the presence of the Bermuda 40 in Cruising World’s list, I wouldn’t even have bothered to vote.”
By vote, he means that he, like hundreds of other readers, took the time to click through to an accompanying page where we asked you to help us reshuffle our alphabetical listing of noteworthy production sailboats so that we could rank them instead by popularity. So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.
The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?
In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. Their favorites poured in and soon an inkling of a list began to take shape. To corral things a bit and avoid going all the way back to Joshua Slocum and his venerable Spray —Hell, to Noah and his infamous Ark —we decided to focus our concentration on production monohull sailboats, which literally opened up the sport to anyone who wanted to get out on the water. And since CW is on the verge or turning 40, we decided that would be a nice round number at which to draw the line and usher in our coming ruby anniversary.
If you enjoy scrolling through this list, which includes all types of sailboats, then perhaps you would also be interested in browsing our list of the Best Cruising Sailboats . Check it out and, of course, feel free to add your favorite boat, too. Here at Cruising World , we like nothing better than talking about boats, and it turns out, so do you.

Specifications
Following in the wake of her elder sister the Oceanis 46.1, this 40-foot cruiser, with a new hull design by Marc Lombard , offers unrivaled deck volume and interior space , with zero concessions to performance. The Oceanis 40.1 is available in different layouts, drafts and rig options , adapting to the most demanding sailor’s cruising requirements and satisfying their need for comfort and pleasure under sail.
NAVAL ARCHITECT : Marc Lombard
INTERIOR & DECK DESIGN : Nauta Design
Exterior design
How can you enjoy life at anchor as much as while sailing? With the innovative flared hull design of the Oceanis 40.1, BENETEAU has broken new ground but made no concessions. The result is a hull that has true speed potential and is stiff under sail. Above the waterline, her deck plan and ultra-spacious interior by Nauta Design is unheard-of on a boat this size. You cannot help feeling that you are aboard a 45 foot cruiser!
Interior Design
With your choice of either a walnut or white oak , the styling of the interior by Italian designer Nauta is remarkably bright and excels in the skillful arrangement of the living spaces. She is available with two, three, or four cabins, and a C-shaped galley to the starboard that offers an abundance of storage and a spacious countertop. On the port side, there is a large salon with a table, complete with a removable bench. A chart table at the foot of the companionway provides ample working space. Everything is modular, so that everyone can live the way they want and enjoy sailing wherever the wind takes them.
40 FEET OF SPACE!
The philosophy of the Oceanis 40.1 is to make sailing and mooring pleasurable. The strengths of this cruiser, studied in detail by the architect Marc Lombard and the BENETEAU design office, are unrivalled interior space, a huge deck plan, and the ability to clock up miles when you are cruising.
LIFE AT ANCHOR
The ergonomics and easy maneuvering in the cockpit make life onboard simple. Nothing interferes with the joy of life at anchor. Feel like splashing around the boat in an idyllic creek? The transom easily converts to an extensive swim platform, similar in size to the ones you find on the largest Oceanis cruising yachts. Having access to the sea is an integral part of life on a sailing yacht, and this model is one of a kind.
SEEKING EXCITEMENT UNDER SAIL…
As there is no one way to sail, and because everyone takes their cruising at their own pace, the Oceanis 40.1 comes in several versions. Sailors keen on performance can choose the First Line Pack, with a taller mast and a deeper draft. Alternatively, the in-mast furling system and self-tacking jib will make maneuvering easier when shorthanded. A classic mast for a semi-full batten mainsail is also available.
HEAVENS ABOVE, SO MUCH SPACE!
The hatches and the many hull and coachroof portholes, two of which face towards the cockpit, fill the boat with natural light and ventilation, making her exceptionally bright. The Oceanis 40.1 comes in 4 different versions with two, three, and four cabins to accommodate everyone’s idea of a holiday on board. Couples and large families will feel at home. The owner version has a cabin with an ensuite shower and head, and a bed easily accessible from either side. The four-cabin layout has two forward berths with bunk beds.
Equipped With SEANAPPS
The easiest way to keep your boat safe and ready to cruise anytime.
The new Seanapps app is the ultimate solution to help you indulge your passion for boating. With the touch of your finger, you can easily connect, monitor and order services for your boat – from routine maintenance, to requesting a wash or fuel or having us complete a repair.

Browse by Sail Type
Just looking to get a feel for what is out there? You can browse our new sails marketplace by specific sail types.
Mainsails are the principal sail on a sailboat. They are set on the aft side of the boat toward the stern. They are one of the main sails that propel the boat forward.
Headsails are the smaller sails that are attached to the mast and extend toward the fore side (bow) of the boat. They are the second sail responsible for propelling the boat forward but they work with the mainsail to balance the boat and to improve the efficiency of the mainsail. Depending on your boat specifications, and what type of sailing you are doing, headsails come in a variety of different styles. The two main styles are jibs and genoas.
A jib is a triangular staysail set in front of the mast. The jib gives control over the bow of the ship, making it easier to maneuver the ship and gives the ship more speed.
A genoa is a large jib that overlaps the mainsail. They are used to increase speed in light and moderate winds. Genoas are categorized based on the amount they extend past the mainsail. For instance a 135% genoa has a foot 35% longer than ‘J’ and a 155% genoa has a foot 55% longer.
A spinnaker is a type of downwind sail that has a large area that is used to propel the boat forward in very light winds. The spinnaker fills with wind and balloons out in front of the boat when used. Spinnakers require specific mounting gear to attach them to the boat properly.
Set between a genoa and a spinnaker a code sail is a fast, flat, free-flying sail, designed for close reaching angles. Originally created to qualify as a spinnaker as a racing sail, code sails have become their own category of sails in recent years. These sails include Code Zero sails, Code 65, and Code 55. They fill in the gap between the headsail and the mainsail.
The Gennaker is a cross between the genoa and the spinnaker. It does not cover as large of a surface area meaning it does not work as well as a spinnaker. However, it does not require a separate mounting pole, meaning it can be added on in addition to a headsail and a mainsail. Providing a little extra speed and movement.

2016 Hunt Yachts Harrier 26
"OSPREY"
DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT
OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Xpeng Motors
Xpeng motors announces new ai-centric brand targeting evs priced as low $14,000.
Leading Chinese EV automaker XPeng Motors has publicly shared plans for a new EV brand to deliver affordable, AI-driven smart cars to young consumers. Targeting China’s A-class segment of EVs priced between RMB 100,000-150,000, XPeng’s new brand could help pave the way for more affordable EVs around the globe.
XPeng Motors ($XPEV) , although still relatively young in the automotive industry, sits as a veteran in Chinese EV development and the adjacent technologies that support electric mobility.
In addition to designing, developing, and manufacturing its own EV hardware and top-tier ADAS software , the XPeng umbrella also develops charging technology, robots, and even has its own advanced air mobility (AAM) arm called AeroHT – which is developing eVTOLs and actual flying cars .
Such investments are starting to pay off as well. XPeng Motors recently posted its Q4 2023 sales numbers which included record revenues, significantly lower net losses, and an upward tick of gross margins into positive territory.
With expansions to new markets like Europe, Egypt, and the Middle East continuing in 2024, XPeng Motors has announced a new EV brand that will initially launch in China, and its targeted pricing is hard not to get excited about.
New XPeng brand to provide “AI-driven user experience”
XPeng Motors shared details of the new EV brand earlier today, which arrives as a culmination of previously laid plans for new vehicle technologies. During its annual 1023 Tech Day 2023, XPeng expressed a commitment to deploy more AI in its mass-produced EVs, including cognitive assistant functions.
During the recent China Electric Vehicle 100 Summit, XPeng Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng shared big plans for the automaker’s “AI-enabled smart driving” technology, vowing to invest RMB 3.5 billion (~$492M) in 2024 alone toward the R&D of artificial intelligence and the firing of 4,000 new employees.
Today we’ve learned XPeng’s AI and ADAS technology won’t just be featured on its namesake EVs but in a new, more affordable brand as well. The unnamed sub-brand will launch in China soon, although XPeng says it will “create a new breed of AI-powered Smart EVs for young customers worldwide.”
XPeng’s Chairman and CEO recently said the next decade of EVs will be one of intelligence and smart driving technology. As such, the new brand will deliver AI-centric tech at an affordable price for all, targeting RMB 100,000-150,000 ($14,000-$21,000). Per XPeng’s release:
Vehicles priced between 100,000 to 150,000 yuan have long been the mainstream choice for Chinese consumers. With over 8 million cars sold every year, this price segment possesses abundant market demand, strong development potential, and increasing market share. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, in 2023, the market share of vehicles priced between 100,000 to 150,000 yuan accounted for approximately 34% of the market, compared to about 31% in 2022. At the same time, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in this price range is also continuously increasing. However, there are few products in this market segment that offer smart driving functions, let alone AI-driven smart driving.
With its new brand, XPeng intends to tap into a popular EV segment in China and try to dominate by providing technology and smart driving functions that consumers normally don’t gain access to at that price point.
This appears to begin with a lone EV model (teased above), but XPeng says its new brand will continue to introduce multiple models with varying levels of intelligent driving capabilities. We could very well see this new marque eventually expand beyond China, as XPeng is already describing it as an ” entry into a new stage of multi-brand global strategic operation.”
