Risky run pays off for Ichi Ban in rugged Adelaide to Port Lincoln yacht race

Drone photo of yacht race

Two-time Sydney to Hobart yacht race winner Ichi Ban has taken line honours in this year's Adelaide to Port Lincoln race, making the challenging 156-nautical-mile journey in almost exactly 12 hours.

Key points:

  • Ichi Ban handles "tough" conditions to cross the line in almost exactly 12 hours
  • The win is due reward for the NSW crew, the only team to risk a border shutdown
  • Some regard the race as the next most challenging after the Sydney to Hobart

Ichi Ban's 3:00am Saturday finish in testing conditions is also likely to deliver the overall title when race times are tallied tomorrow.

That adds up to a rewarding outing for Ichi Ban's NSW crew, who were unable to defend their 2019 Sydney to Hobart handicap title when Sydney's COVID-19 outbreak led to the cancellation of the world famous event .

Skipper Matt Allen said COVID worries made for a tricky lead-up to the South Australian race. Ichi Ban was the only interstate entrant after the crew took a calculated risk to make the trip from interstate.

"It was a big risk, because we knew we could get the boat here, but could we get the crew here if the borders locked down? We decided to take that risk," he said.

Fight down to the wire

South Australian rivals Hooligan and Secret Men's Business came in half-an-hour later in a pre-dawn tussle for the line, with Hooligan snatching second place just seconds ahead.

Hooligan crew member Jacob Keough said conditions were still and slow in Adelaide but the winds picked up to 30 knots as the yachts passed Yorke Peninsula.

"It was really close racing, after 12 hours, to finish within two boat lengths of each other. It was awesome," Keough said.

"We just managed to sneak in around the jetty there in Port Lincoln.

"We have some locals on board and they know the secrets of Port Lincoln, so the whole team worked together and we got the boat across the line."

Conditions 'like a washing machine'

Game On 2 skipper Julian Christopher Newton said it was a sleepless night for the Adelaide crew on a potentially treacherous run between the two cities.

"We took plenty of water on the boat and across the deck. There was substantial swell. It was a tough race," Newton said.

"Heading for Cape Spencer it's quite a mixed sea. You've got tide pushing against wind, which makes it very difficult. It's almost like a washing machine out there."

Skipper Julian Christopher Newton came in sixth on Game On 2.

Race numbers were dramatically down on the usual 70 yachts, with Victorians unable to enter South Australia and border uncertainty for other potential starters. Twenty one yachts started.

Four yachts turned back to Adelaide on Friday afternoon, after damage sustained from the sea conditions.

Some regard the race as the most challenging after the Sydney to Hobart and Fresh crew member Shelley Fiegert said more eyes were on the South Australian event.

"I think it's great we want to bring more people here to Port Lincoln, so hopefully — COVID pending next year — we can bring more competitors from interstate," she said.

Fresh outlook for regional yachting ahead of 2023 Teakle Classic Adelaide-Lincoln

Some of Port Lincoln’s most renowned sailors are teaming up for the state’s premier offshore race in an effort to showcase how important major regattas are to regional clubs.

The Teakle Classic Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race is the town’s marquee on-water event and Kym Clarke’s 47-foot racing yacht, Fresh, will lead the Port Lincoln fleet with an all-star crew of locals and ex-pats.

Skipper Andy Dyer, a former America’s Cup sailor, said events like the Teakle Classic were crucial to helping regional sailing clubs stay afloat and continue to promote the sport to the next generation.

“This creates a centrepiece for up and coming sailors in Port Lincoln to see that we’re still relevant in offshore sailing,” he said.

“With the ex-pats too, it’s about getting back to the grassroots where they appreciate what that environment did for them growing up.”

This year’s event, which includes a four-day regatta in Port Lincoln next week, has attracted one of the biggest fleet’s in the club’s history, which Dyer hopes will be a catalyst for growth in local sailing.

Teaming up with Dyer and his team this year is Luke Stephens, a Port Lincoln ex-pat and one of the state’s top sailors, who now lives and races in Adelaide.

“There’s a lot of pride doing this race representing your home club, both Kym and Andy have done so much for the sport, as well as for me personally,” he said.

“I know what it was like as a youngster in Port Lincoln looking up to the top sailors at the club, I think that’s what we are trying to achieve again with this race.”

The Adelaide-Lincoln race starts from North Haven at 3pm today.

74th Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht race.

adelaide port lincoln yacht race

Over the weekend two RBYC boats, Another Chapter and JAMHU, joined 21 other yachts in the 74th Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht race. This 160nm race started in Adelaide on Friday afternoon with the course taking yachts across the Gulf of St Vincent to Marion Reef at the bottom of the Yorke Peninsula, into Investigator Strait towards Cape Spencer before the fleet turned northwest towards Cape Donington and into Port Lincoln. The section of the course from around Cape Spencer to Dangerous Reef, about 15 miles SE of Port Lincoln, is a navigator’s nightmare with numerous islands and reefs along the rhumb line. Many of these are unlit and to make things more interesting this section is sailed at night, often under spinnaker with a strong following wind. This year proved no different. The race started in 10-15knot south westerly breeze that strengthened and backed to the SE allowing the yachts to cross the Gulf of St Vincent on one port tack with the leading yachts reaching Marion Reef just on dark. The fleet then reached under headsails across Investigator Strait to Cape Spencer before setting spinnakers for the run home to Port Lincoln. The wind was 15-20 knots and shifted between 80 – 135 degrees with the shift to 80 degrees both unpredicted and unexpected. As often is the case at night, it was during this section that the race was won and lost. Most of the fleet had finished by lunchtime on Saturday with the two RBYC boats finishing 8th and 9th on AMS. After the usual post race refreshments and a good sleep, the crews of Another Chapter and JAMHU are preparing for the Tackle Classic Lincoln Regatta, a mix of windward/leeward and passage races sailed on the sheltered waters of Boston Bay – think Geelong without the channel, ships and ferries!
