BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN VENDÉE 

The story of BENETEAU began in 1884 in the shipyards of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie in Vendée, inspired by Benjamin Bénéteau.  At the time, BENETEAU had close ties with the fishing industry and, at the start of the 20th century, the brand launched its first sailing trawlers and motor tuna fishing boats. 

In the 1960s BENETEAU turned towards the building of recreational craft. In making this choice, BENETEAU actively focussed on  sailing yachts  and motorboats . 

In the 1990s, BENETEAU expanded becoming the umbrella brand of GROUPE BENETEAU.

Beneteau First 36

The Beneteau First 36 has a mission to bridge the gap between high-tech development in the world of racing and mainstream racer-cruisers. To be specific, even the standard version of First 36 will fully plane in a moderate breeze. Positioning six winches, steering wheels, and other deck gear was thoroughly tested on several mock-ups and a full-scale testbed sailboat to enable the sailing experience promised on the previous page.

Designed by naval architect Marc Lombard with interior styling by Piaton Bercault, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380 complete with the award-winning walk-around deck, follows the same design trend of its predecessors the Sun Odyssey 410, 440, and 490. On the interior, while the design features the hallmarks of this line, careful consideration was given to the perception of space and the simplification of lines, with the objective of creating sensations of peace and calm. For this fast cruising yacht , the shipyard has once again entrusted the Finot-Conq naval architecture firm to apply the very successful design of the Pogo 36 to a larger model. As for the hull, the Pogo 44 features a wide, chine hull, which guarantees high performance in planning and comfort when sailing at all speeds. The bow has a large volume, which is reminiscent of the Pogo 3. What has not changed, and what is still the RM range’s defining characteristic, is the twin-chined hull, made of Okumé plywood impregnated with epoxy resin (the deck is in fiberglass sandwich). The French shipyard is constantly developing its range and, after the 5.4, the fleet’s flagship, and the recent 4.2 and 4.6, the Bali 4.4 joins this renewed family. The Bali 4.4 replaces the 4.3 and 4.5 from the Bali catamaran range. With the same origins (designer Olivier Poncin, architect Xavier Fay and Lasta Design for the interiors) the Bali 4.4 has the DNA of the last models with slender bows, a silhouette lightened by the presence of long hull portholes and vast living spaces. The  bluewater  sailing configuration of the  Excess  15 consists of twin  Deep Blue  50 kW electric saildrives in cooperation with ZF, two Deep Blue high-capacity lithium-ion BMW i3 batteries, and a full energy management system for harvesting green energy and charging the boat’s batteries while underway. On the yacht’s long test sail, the hydro generation system easily provided enough electricity to power one hundred percent of the onboard hotel loads at a cruising speed of seven to eight knots. Designed in partnership with the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman, this fast blue-water cruising catamaran features an electric propulsion system that includes great hydro-generation facilities, solar panels, and the possibility to work under generator when it’s a necessity. With the development of an eco-composite in basalt fiber and PET foam, this is definitely an eco-friendly boat. In 1957, young engineer Michel Dufour discovered the new material, polyester. At the time, he was a keen competition sailor with a real passion for yachts , class rules and hydrodynamics. This sparked his idea to build a yacht made of polyester . In 1964, Michel Dufour started to design the “Sylphe” transportable yacht. He took a lot of financial risks to make the yacht, rented a hangar and started to make the “Sylphe” under the aegis of his newly formed company, Le Stratifié Industriel.

The famous Italian naval architect Umberto Felci and the designers of Dufour Yachts work in very close cooperation to get hulls of the very best quality. The worldwide reputation of our yachts does not need to be reminded.

Here are some of the best catamaran brands on the market today: 

Lagoon – Groupe Beneteau

Lagoon is a French boatbuilder with an excellent reputation and sells the largest number of catamarans per year. The brand started back in 1984 and was one of the first catamaran brands to really convince people of the concept of multihulls. The philosophy of the Lagoon brand is good design, high-quality construction, and a decent cruising performance under sail. In other words, a Lagoon is the dream of every fan of sailing that looks for a catamaran that can provide everything, whether that is a fun toy for summer sailing trips or a year-round liveaboard yacht. What Lagoon did right, and the reason it has proven to be so popular is that it listened to its customers. That is why every new Lagoon catamaran has more space, more efficient layouts, and is always more comfortable than their previous version. There is no wonder why they have so many repeat customers.

Lagoon makes 9 sailing catamaran models and 2 powercat models, ranging in length from 40 to 78 feet. It also used to make shorted boats like the Lagoon 380 at 37 feet, but unfortunately, it was discontinued. You can find a Lagoon on the used market starting at $150,000 (like a 2002-2007 Lagoon 380) and as high as $5 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Lagoon Seventy 7, which comes with a jacuzzi on deck.

Fountaine Pajot

Fountaine-Pajot is a French maritime construction brand that is specializing in catamarans. The company was established in 1976, but it launched its first sailing catamaran in 1983 and its first powercat in 1998. This brand is now famous for building both sailing and power catamarans that have a beautiful and innovative design, superior handling, excellent seaworthiness, and cruising comfort. Also, Fountaine Pajot was one of the first catamaran brands that was manufacturing their boats with environmental protection in mind. So, all of their models have options to include renewable energy sources. Their ECO-Cruising and SMART-Cruising options considerably reduce their yachts’ carbon footprint and provide the necessary clean energy for their sailboats.

Fountaine-Pajot makes both sailing catamarans and powercats, ranging in length from 40 to 67 feet. It also used to make shorted boats like the Lagoon 380 at 37 feet, but unfortunately, it was discontinued. You can find a Lagoon on the used market starting at $100,000-150,000 (like a 1990-2005 Fountaine Pajot Athena 38) and as high as $3.5 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Fountaine Pajot Alegria 67, which comes with a jacuzzi on the front deck.

Leopard is a boatbuilder located in South Africa and produces some of the best and most luxurious catamarans. You will find Fountain Pajor catamarans for sale also under the name “Robertson & Caine” because some Leopard cats are built by Robertson & Caine company. Leopards are mainly designed to be luxurious, big, and comfortable, but that usually comes at a cost, both in price tag and sailing speed and maneuverability. 

Leopard Catamarans was established in 2000 their partnership with South African builder Robertson and Caine. This company was manufacturing custom-designed catamarans for the global yacht charter company The Moorings. While Leopard was focusing on sailing catamarans in the beginning, in 2007, they started making powercats as well.

Leopard is always designing their boats to have the optimal balance between interior space and performance, sheltered helm cockpit designed for offshore cruising and single-handed sailing, large lounge areas, optimal comfort, and ease of maintenance. 

Nowadays, Leopard is making sailing catamarans between 42 and 58 feet and powercats between 50 and 53 feet. You can find a Leopard on the used market starting at $180,000 (like a Leopard 38) in good condition and as high as $2 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Leopard 58; however, they are not as luxurious as some of the other brand’s top-of-the-line models.

Catana catamarans are a little bit more performance-oriented. They have features that make them sail faster and be more easily maneuverable than some of the other catamaran brands on the list. Many of their boats come with a feature called daggerboard that will help you sail faster upwind, something that most catamarans struggle with. Catana Group was originally called Poncin Yachts and has been building catamarans in France since 2001. It is famous for producing catamarans for owners who most often want to go bluewater sailing around the world comfortably and safely with a high-performance boat. This is not a famous brand, but it grows in popularity very fast. Year by year, I have noticed more and more Catana catamarans in the marinas I visit. 

Catana Catamarans are built using foam sandwich vacuum infusion technology combined with carbon and aramid fiber. This combination guarantees the strength of the hull, significant weight savings, and because of this fact, higher speed.

Catana offers new boats from 42 to 70 feet. In the past, they were building boats as long as 90 feet. You can find a Catana on from the early 2000s’ on the used market for as low as $250,000, and as high as $4 million USD for a top of the line full spec’d brand new one.

Nautitech is another catamaran brand located in France; I guess there is a pattern here. They have built a reputation for designing catamarans that are robust, seaworthy, and capable of putting sailing back into the heart of the liveaboard experience without compromising on comfort. Anyone familiar with catamarans can quickly appreciate the innovative nature of a Nautitech cat design. The brand was also the first one to introduce the concept of liveaboard living, which combines the saloon and cockpit into one spacious, functional living area.

Nautitech offers new boats from 40 to 57 feet. You can find a Nautitech on from the early 2000s’ on the used market (Like the Nautitech 40) for as low as $180,000. However, a new top-of-the-line Nautitech 54 can be spec’d up to $1.5 million USD; though, they are not as luxurious as some of the other brand’s top-of-the-line models. 

The brand was founded in 1985 in France. Privilège Catamarans offer unparalleled expertise, know-how, and experience that facilitates the construction of some of the best catamarans on the market today. They can provide luxurious liveaboard life beyond coastal borders. Its elegant hull design ensures superb stability and comfort making then one of the best catamaran brands in the world right now. Every catamaran is custom-built according to the owner’s preferences and handcrafted with great craftsmanship and the finest materials.

The company specializes in the design and manufacture of some of the best, and luxurious bluewater catamarans on the water. Every new Privilege cat is built after multiple consultations between the shipyard and the owner. You can decide to either keep the catamaran in its pure and elegant look and also keep the cost as low as possible or to change it to your personal preferences and make it as high-end as you can afford.

Privilège makes both sailing catamarans and powercats, ranging in length from 51 to 75 feet. It also used to make shorted boats like the Privilege 435 at 43 feet, but unfortunately, they are now focusing on larger yachts. You can find a Privilege from the early 2000s’ on the used market starting at $300,000 (like the Privilege 435) but can easily surpass $5 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Privilege 745 or 740.

Gemini 

Gemini is one of the few catamaran brands that make its boats in the US. It is a subsidiary of Performance Cruising Inc., and they have been making catamarans since 1981. Honestly, Gemini catamarans might not be the most good-looking and luxurious, but they are affordable and sail well. For that reason, they definitely deserve a spot on the list with the best catamaran brands. 

You can find a used Gemini cat in good condition in good condition from the early 1990s, starting at around 50k and a newer model for as high as 500k. Overall this is a very affordable brand, and you will definitely enjoy one without breaking the bank.

Seawind 

Seawind Catamarans is a catamaran designer and builder located in Australia, producing high-end performance cruising sail catamarans since 1982. They have produced some of the world’s best and award-winning designs. 

The Seawind brand is especially good for people looking for a catamaran that is not overly luxurious or expensive and is probably looking for a more reasonably sized yacht; however, they do offer a couple of larger, more luxurious models as well. 

Seawind offers new boats from 35 to 52 feet. You can find one on from the early 2000s’ on the used market for as low as $150,000, like a Seawind 1000. However, a new top-of-the-line Seawind 1600 can be spec’d up to around $1 million USD.

Sunreef Yachts

Sunreef is the world’s leading manufacturer of luxury sailing and power multihulls. Each catamaran, motor yacht, and superyacht they make is a custom vessel. The company was established in 2002 in Gdansk, Poland but a Frenchman and was the first brand to build a 74-foot bluewater cruising catamaran. 

This brand has pulled all the stops when it comes to luxury and comfort. Whether you are looking for a family-friendly liveaboard cat, a luxurious private floating villa, a dazzling party boat, or a fishing expedition superyacht fantasy, their designers will turn your vision into reality. Just be prepared to pay the price. 

Sunreef makes both large sailing catamarans and powercats, ranging in length from 50 to 150 feet! You can find a Sunreef from the early the Mid-2000s on the used market starting at $700,000 (like the Sunreef 62) but can easily surpass $15 million USD for Sunreef 102. They also have the Sunreef MM460 CAT on their catalog, which is one of the largest catamarans even created. However, unfortunately, I was not able to get even an approximate price quote on it. If I had to guess, I would say at least $50 million to have one built.

Bali Catamarans is another brand of the well-known Catana shipyard. And it is also the newest brand on the list established in 2014. Catana catamarans are the golden standard when it comes to high-speed cats. However, in 2014, they decided to start a production brand of fast, light, and easily maneuverable cruising catamarans. The Bali Catamarans collection has a unique design mainly; it has no mesh “trampoline” in the front cockpit. It features an open-space interior, a huge refrigerator in the inner saloon, and many other uncommon features. 

Bali offers new boats from 39 to 50 feet. You can find a Bali on from 2014-2015 on the used market for as low as $300k (like the Bali 4.0). However, a new top-of-the-line Bali 5.7 can spec’d up to over a $2 million USD.

Final Thoughts

In order to compile the best list of catamarans, I took into account the built quality, comfort seaworthiness but also the number of yachts for sale on the used market. In my point of view, I shouldn’t have put a custom catamaran builder on this list because you wouldn’t be able to find one for sale anyway. For most of these brands, there are many boats for sale on the used market in pretty good condition and at reasonable prices.

The 86' Unleashed "Double Down"launched in 2008 and reset the bar for custom composite yachts around the world. French originally designed this amazing machine in 1995, but he didn't meet the right buyer until 2005. In the early days of the automotive industry, France was among the manufacturing pioneers, producing some of the most advanced vehicles and boasting the world’s largest car market. That, of course, changed in World War II. Though the French auto industry is again one of the largest in Europe and the world, as well as a major contributor to the country’s economy, French car brands have had virtually no sales in the North American market in decades. ( These 11 cars are still mostly made in America. )

The largest automakers in France are Stellantis and Renault. The former owns the renowned French brands Citroën and Peugeot, as well as formerly Detroit-based Chrysler. Renault, meanwhile, owns several brands and has close ties with Japanese auto giant Nissan. Other manufacturers in France include companies with long histories, like Bugatti, and some that are relatively young. They produce a wide variety of automobiles, from microcars to supercars, as well as many other types of vehicles. And the French automotive industry has strong ties and a long association with the auto racing world.

• Known for: Small cars

Vehicles from this French automobile manufacturer are particularly popular in France and Italy but can be found throughout Europe, as well as in Asia and South America. Aixam is known for its subcompact, lightweight fuel-efficient vehicles, including quadricycles and electric vehicles. In some regions, these vehicles do not require a driver’s license to operate. On average, the company produces more than 18,000 vehicles a year.

Renault purchased this brand in 1973 and merged it with its own sports car unit. Long known for innovation, Citroën introduced the world’s first mass-produced cars with front-wheel drive and four-wheel independent suspension. The current lineup of this famous French car brand includes sedans, minivans, convertibles, hatchbacks and electric cars. Citroën produced over 535,000 vehicles in 2020.

This company began as a Romanian car manufacturer but was acquired by its current owner in 1999. In 2021, Dacia sold almost 538,000 passenger and commercial vehicles in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Its vehicles have a reputation for being cheap and reliable, and they are still made at its Romanian factory, as well as another in Morocco.

DS Automobiles

• Founded: 2009

This premium French car brand was spun out of the Citroën brand in 2014. Its tagline of “Spirit of Avant-Garde” is exemplified by the aerodynamic, futuristic body design and the unorthodox and innovative technology. Less than 41,000 DS Automobiles vehicles were produced in 2020, and they sell primarily in Europe and China. The company recently announced that starting in 2024 all models produced will be “exclusively 100% electric.”

This company was founded by a former race car driver, and it sponsored a Formula One racing team from 1976 to 1996. The company changed its focus from making racing cars to microcars after the energy crisis of 1973. It is now Europe’s largest manufacturer of drivers-license-exempt vehicles. The company also produces a line of quad bikes and off-road utility vehicles, and its EZ10 is a self-driving shuttle bus designed for light city transit.

Microcar initially was a division of a sailboat manufacturer, until it was purchased by its current owner in 2008. Like Ligier, Microcar is a producer of quadricycles, or license-exempt vehicles. However, the brands retain their separate identities and production facilities. Microcar began producing electric vehicles in-house in 2009. Note that the market for microcars from all manufacturers (including Daimler, General Motors, Nissan and Toyota) is expected to approach $60 billion by 2030.

• Founded: 1810

This renowned French car brand is considered by some to be the oldest in the world, though the company got its start as a tool and bicycle maker. It produced its first automobile in 1889, a three-wheeled, steam-powered vehicle. The company merged with Citroën in 1975 and produced the now-defunct brands Simca and Talbot. In 2021, it merged with Fiat Chrysler, and the company was named Stellantis. Under the Peugeot brand, the best-selling model is the 208, a small, sporty five-door hatchback that is highly rated for its dependability.

This tiny French manufacturer is known for its exclusive series of retro-styled premium sports cars made to order. In 2005, PGO fell under the controlling interest of the Kuwaiti holding company Al Sayer Group, which greatly increased its funding. Now, its three models are the Speedster II, Cévennes and Hemera, all built in the same factory. They are said to resemble a post-war Porsche 365, but with a thoroughly modern interior and internals.

Renault is France’s largest manufacturer and exporter of motor vehicles and one of the country’s most prominent corporate brands. Its best-selling cars in Europe are the Clio subcompact and the Captur small crossover, with over 300,000 and 200,000 in annual sales, respectively. The company’s largest stakeholders are the French government and Nissan. But Renault also owns a sizable stake in Nissan.

Founded by French engineers, the company now is headquartered in Monaco. The current owner purchased the company out of bankruptcy in 2000 and changed its focus to building electric luxury sports cars. It produces only about 10 vehicles per year. In 2022, the company set its sights even higher. One of its partners is collaborating with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to develop a rover for use on the moon.

Gardaí have requested the assistance of French police to try identify who brought a small boat to Cherbourg for transport to Ireland where it was used by a suspected drugs gang to try collect a consignment of cocaine from South America.

Detectives from west Cork have been in touch via Europol with police in Normandy to secure CCTV footage from Cherbourg ferry terminal on March 5th where it is believed an articulated lorry with the Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) in its trailer boarded a ferry bound for Rosslare.

The lorry disembarked from the ferry in Rosslare on March 6th and gardaí believe it was driven to Northern Ireland. Gardaí asked the PSNI to carry out a search of a commercial premises in Northern Ireland where it is believed the lorry was stored for a number of days before heading to Co Cork, arriving in Tragumna near Skibbereen on the evening of Monday, March 11th.

The RIB was unloaded and launched from the slipway in Tragumna under cover of darkness by members of the organised crime group who all met up for the first time in west Cork after a number of them had flown into Dublin Airport over the weekend of March 8th-March 10th.

According to one experienced observer of drug smuggling operations, the gang made a mistake in deciding to launch the boat from Tragumna as the articulated lorry attracted attention in the small coastal village.

“If they had brought an articulated lorry into Castletownbere or Union Hall or any of the main fishing ports, nobody would have paid a blind bit of notice because there are articulated lorries into these places all the time to collect catches so another artic wouldn’t have stood out,” he said.

“Even if they had launched from Baltimore or Schull, again nobody would have noticed it but Tragumna is a small holiday village with narrow windy roads and no fish being landed there so an articulated lorry going down there last week stood out immediately.”

It is believed a group of five Spaniards and a Serbian man set off in the 10-metre RIB from Tragumna slip late on Monday night of last week or in the early hours of Tuesday morning to rendezvous with a ship carrying a large consignment of cocaine.

However, they failed to meet the ship as planned. They stayed at sea for two days trying to rendezvous with the ship and when they failed to make contact, aborted the mission and returned to Tragumna early on Thursday morning.

Gardaí had been maintaining surveillance at Tragumna after a concerned citizen reported suspicious activity around a camper van there around 4.30am on Tuesday. When a local woman rang gardaí around 6.30am on Thursday to report more suspicious activity, officers moved in.

They arrested three men – two Dutch nationals and a Spaniard – by a Land Rover Discovery near Tragumna slip. A fourth man, a 37-year-old from Co Fermanagh, was also arrested as he was about to drive away in the lorry.

Gardaí also arrested the five Spaniards and the Serb in Leap village after they left Tragumna in a Zephyr camper van which had been hired in Northern Ireland. Gardaí have also requested assistance from the PSNI in finding out who hired the camper van and when.

According to one experienced mariner, the gang may have invested upwards of €500,000 in acquiring and equipping the RIB which was fitted with three 300-horsepower petrol outboard engines which would enable the boat to hit speeds of more than 40 knots.

French linguist Bernard Cerquiglini would like to send a copy of his new book, "The English language doesn't exist: it's badly pronounced French", to King Charles III.

Rather than aiming to make the monarch sputter into his morning tea, "it's a book written from a humorous perspective, it's deliberately in bad faith, arrogant, chauvinistic and so on," Cerquiglini told AFP.

Beneath the provocative title and humour, the prominent academic hopes to convey the cross-Channel linguistic tangle since the Norman conquest of 1066 -- and how ridiculous French resistance to "anglicisms" can be.

"You can also see my book as an homage to the English language, which has been able to adopt so many words... Viking, Danish, French, it's astonishing," Cerquiglini said.

Norman French's use by the new colonial aristocracy endowed English with words that at first glance might look homegrown, like "cabbage", "lure" or "wage", in the 150 years after William the Conqueror took the throne.

But Cerquiglini is most interested by the 13th and 14th centuries, when French -- by then a second language used in trade, administration and law -- bled freely into English because "a job, fortunes in land or cash, upholding a contract, liberty or even one's life, could depend on mastering" the tongue.

Half of English's borrowings from French took place from 1260-1400, producing words like "bachelor", from the old French word "bachelier", meaning a young noble not yet a knight.

"Travel" is related to the modern French word for labour, "travail", while "clock" stems from the French "cloche", a bell struck to sound the hours before mechanical timepieces were invented.

By the time Shakespeare came to write his plays in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, around "40 percent of the 15,000 words in his works are of French origin", Cerquiglini notes.

These days the place of "Anglo-Saxon" words in modern French can stir defensiveness in Paris, often from the Academie Francaise, charged since 1635 with preserving the language in its "pure" form.

"Language in France is official, of the state, national. And so of course we have an academy" whose members enjoy "a ridiculous outfit, a sword, a palace by the Seine" river in Paris, Cerquiglini said.

In recent years the academy has railed against imports related to Covid-19, such as "cluster" or "testing", as well as tech terms like "big data".

Cerquiglini said the academy has scored some worthwhile wins, such as convincing the French-speaking world to use the native-sounding "logiciel" instead of the once-omnipresent "software".

But he added: "This isn't an invasion, these are French words that have gone for training in England and that are coming back to us."

Sometimes French alternatives can go too far, he points out, such as in the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec, where some food stands offer a "chien chaud" -- a very literal translation of "hot dog".

"That doesn't whet my appetite, I have no desire to buy a 'chien chaud', that's for sure," Cerquiglini said.

Cerquiglini sees the rich cross-pollination between English and French as an example for La Francophonie, the loose modern association of French-speaking nations.

Madagascar, for example, uses French as a second language in much the same way as England did 800 years ago, he points out.

The situation there or in places like the US state of Louisiana, where French is still spoken by many as a second language, could prove as fertile as the language's sojourn in Britain, Cerquiglini believes.

He also hopes English will survive the trend in recent decades toward a simplified form spoken around the world -- sniffily described as "Globish" by French detractors.

"This is an impoverished English," he said. "We have to save the English language, Charles III has to act!"

Cerquiglini places high hopes in automatic translation, which could allow local languages to be preserved while enabling free communication.

"I spent 30 years of my career mocking automatic translation... because it was terrible," he said. "Now it's stupefying."

F.D.A. Urges Recall of Cinnamon Brands Tainted by Lead

The agency tested 75 types of cinnamon after hundreds of children were poisoned by the spice in applesauce. It found some lead in cinnamon brands sold at some dollar stores and other markets.

The Food and Drug Administration is telling consumers to throw out certain brands of cinnamon that were found to have elevated levels of lead, and it urged companies to recall the products from store shelves.

The agency conducted tests across the country after at least 460 children were sickened last year by illnesses linked to applesauce pouches. Those products had been contaminated with very high levels of lead from cinnamon processed in Ecuador.

The F.D.A.’s latest tests, however, detected far lower levels, 2 to 3 parts per million, in the cinnamon. In contrast, the cinnamon from Ecuador that sickened children last year had 2,200 to 5,100 parts per million.

“Although we have concern about these products in the safety alert, they do not present the same level of risk to human health as the cinnamon in the apple purée and applesauce products,” Conrad Choiniere, an F.D.A. food official, said in a release on Wednesday.

Lead is a potent toxin that is particularly hazardous to young children and has been tied to learning and behavior challenges as well as developmental delays. The agency said no illnesses were reported in relation to the latest batches of cinnamon, which were singled out over elevated lead levels after tests of 75 samples from retail stores.

The latest batches of cinnamon and the applesauce pouches were both sold at Dollar Tree stores. The company has said it is committed to the safety of the products it sells. Brands that the F.D.A. has urged companies to recall include Supreme Tradition cinnamon, sold exclusively at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores. Other cinnamon with elevated lead levels in the recent tests included the La Fiesta brand sold at La Superior SuperMercados and the Marcum brand sold at Save A Lot.

People who have the products should dispose of them, the agency said.

The agency also said that it had written to makers of cinnamon encouraging them to ensure the safety of their products.

Brian Ronholm, director of food policy for Consumer Reports, which tests baby food for heavy metals, said the agency’s review showed that it recognized the potential problem.

“It’s a positive development and reassuring to consumers,” he said. “It also highlights the need to set up a system that prevents things like this from happening.”

Last year, pouches of cinnamon applesauce sold at Dollar Tree and under some private grocery labels were linked to children with high levels of lead in their blood. The F.D.A. has said that it believes that cinnamon was intentionally contaminated with lead chromate powder.

The problem has long been known in the spice industry. The powder is sometimes poured into yellow spices like turmeric or curry to make the color pop or to add weight to a commodity sold by the pound.

Made in Ecuador, the lead-infused cinnamon was mixed into applesauce pouches widely consumed by infants and toddlers. The F.D.A. ultimately worked with the applesauce maker to recall three million pouches and has said it believes that this eliminated the tainted cinnamon from the U.S. food supply.

A Times investigation found that the applesauce sailed through numerous checkpoints in the food-safety system. The cinnamon was not tested by the applesauce maker in Ecuador, F.D.A. records showed, despite requirements that foreign food makers ensure that their products are safe. The U.S. importers who have a duty to vet foreign food let the product pass to store shelves.

The poisoning occurred as the F.D.A. failed to meet the goals set by a landmark food safety law to perform 19,000 overseas inspections a year. Last year it completed 1,200 such reviews.

The applesauce was most likely consumed by children in 44 states whose median blood-lead level was six times the level found in the water crisis caused by lead pipes a decade ago in Flint, Mich.

Doctors who specialize in caring for children with lead exposure have advised parents to ensure that their children have diets rich in iron and calcium, which enter the body through the same pathways as lead. They also suggest that parents feed children a wide variety of food so they are not overexposed to a single item.
