Inside Somnio Superyacht

Somnio yacht is being built by Norwegian ship designer Vard, a division of Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilding company. The name somnio comes from the Latin word for I dream, and this yacht is certainly a boat of dreams.

If you’re curious to know more about this one-of-a-kind superyacht, keep reading for an inside look at all its features.

Somnio Superyacht Specifications

Launching in 2024, the superyacht Somnio is set to be the most exclusive address in the world. Measuring 728 feet (222 meters), Somnio will also be the world’s largest yacht by volume and length.

Her gross tonnage will be 33,500 GT. Somnio will accommodate 39 customizable apartments in extraordinary style. In some ways more like a cruise liner than a yacht, Somnio will have 6 decks.

This innovative yacht building project will have a construction, design and outfitting cost of around 500 million Euros.

Somnio Superyacht Apartments

The luxury apartments on board Somnio will range in size from 1600 square feet to 6500 square feet. The biggest Somnio apartment will take up most of the top deck.

Somnio apartment owners can work with either Luttenberger Design, Tillberg Design of Sweden or Winch Design from the UK . They’ll have up to three months to choose their room layout and to decide upon the materials, lighting, artworks and furniture.

The design house will also help to source items such as luxury linens, cutlery and crockery. If an owner has a specific interior decorator that they’d like to work with, they can also bring them in to help.

The first renderings from each design house are now available. Elegant wood parquet flooring, outside dining spaces, stylish chandeliers and semi-circular beds are just some of the features that you could opt for.

Of course, all room configurations can be tailored to each apartment owner’s preferences. Whether you prefer to include a gym, vast living room space with private balcony, personal kitchen, walk-in closet or a library, anything is possible.

Each apartment will be completed to the highest specifications. Designed to embody a sense of nautical glamour, they’ll feel cosy yet luxurious at the same time.

The luxurious apartments onboard  Somnio yacht liner are now available to purchase. The price starts at nine and a half million Euros. The identity of the owners will remain secret and the process is by referral or invitation only.

Co-founder Captain Erik Bredhe comments:  “Beauty may be found as much on the inside of Somnio as it is on the outside. As the only residential superyacht in the world, we are delighted to work with designers that complement our exacting standards. Our owners will experience only the best, as is befitting of a yacht of this nature.”

What the US$600M 'world's biggest yacht' will look like inside

inside the world's largest yacht

It's set to be one of the largest private residence yachts in the world when it launches in 2024, but what does a luxury apartment on board the 728 foot (221 metres) Somnio actually look like?

Interior renderings of the US$600 million vessel have just been unveiled, offering a glimpse inside what's being described as the world's first "yacht liner."

While all 39 of the floating apartments, which come with a private balcony or terrace, are said to be "fully customizable," some of the options showcased include huge shell-shaped beds, expansive living areas with ocean views, and wall-length mirrors.

FLOATING HOMES

Prices start from around $11 million, with sizes ranging from 1,600 to 6,500 square feet -- the largest condo takes up most of the top deck.

Somnio, which means "to dream '' in Latin, was designed by Winch Design and Tillberg Design of Sweden, and will be built by Norwegian ship designer and builder VARD.

The interior renderings were devised by Winch Design, Tillberg Design of Sweden along with Luttenberger Design.

Those who snap up a condo on "the most exclusive address in the world" will get to work with one of the design teams for up to three months in order to "decide the room configurations and select the materials, furniture, lighting and artwork."

EXCLUSIVE ADDRESS

A gym, a library, inside and outside dining spaces, "distinct" dressing areas and a "vast living room space with 270-degree forward views" are among the options available, although the layout is to be based on the buyer's preferences.

The identity of the owners will be kept secret, but all residents will have access to full concierge services "for both onboard and land-based needs."

"As the only residential superyacht in the world, we are delighted to work with designers that complement our exacting standards," Captain Erik Bredhe, co-founder of Somnio, said in a statement.

"Our owners will experience only the best, as is befitting of a yacht of this nature."

SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS

According to its designers, sustainability will be a key focus for Somnio, which is to be constructed with the "latest clean engine technology" along with materials and products to "create environmentally responsible interior design with a reduced impact" where possible.

Among the shared on board amenities onboard available include a 10,000-bottle capacity wine cellar and tasting room along with a lounge located in the ship's bow, a spa, a movie theater, restaurants and a beach club.

Residents will be charged an annual fee to cover expenses like maintenance and repairs, along with fuel and food.

A spokesperson for the project tells CNN Travel that Somnio has attracted exceptional interest since it was unveiled earlier this year, with some apartments already sold.

At present, The World, which measures 643 feet, is the largest private residential yacht on the globe, with a combination of studios as well as one to three-bedroom apartments on board.

By Editorial Team   25 August 2020

Recently released images have revealed the levels of luxury that can be enjoyed on board the 107m (351')  superyacht LANA , which is available to charter in the idyllic destinations of the Maldives and the Seychelles this winter.

The newly released images show previously unseen areas of the luxury yacht, including the beach club, sundeck and 110m2 master cabin.

Delivered by Benetti in June 2020, LANA is the third largest yacht publicly available for  luxury yacht charter in the world and one of the 50 largest yachts on the sea. Previously known as FB277, she is also the third-largest yacht ever built by Benetti. Only the 108m motor yacht IJE and the 107.6m superyacht LUMINOSITY are larger.

She represents an entirely in-house collaboration between Benetti's interior and exterior designers and naval architects. With her elegant and serene interior and vast social areas, she is a true balance of functionality and luxury.

A serene and spacious interior

The images showcase the soft color palette, designed to create a sense of serenity, in an intricately designed interior that is the work of Benetti’s in-house design team. Bright furnishings and wide windows bring a further sense of light and relaxation.

The sense of space is increased with high ceilings, up to 1.7m in height, and a series of sculptural elements that give LANA a palatial feel and illustrate why she has already triumphed at the World Yacht Trophies , where she pick up the ‘Yacht of the Year’ award.

A range of luxurious amenities

The size of LANA’s already expansive beach club is emphasised even more by its two folding terraces, offering a wonderful area to relax or enjoy the vast number of toys that are available. They include superjets, waterskis, wakeboards, windsurfs, diving equipment and much more.

The folding terraces connect to a hammam and gym and there is a distinctive pool high on the main deck. Other luxurious amenities include a spa with treatment room, a touch-n-go helipad and a private saloon with a large cinema system and a grand piano.

The five-deck superyacht has more than won the approval of the owner who has stated:  “Lana represents a statement of building excellence, every technical feature, every aesthetic element, every single detail was executed to perfection."

LANA sleeps up to 12 guests in eight en-suite cabins, including a master cabin and seven VIP staterooms. Every guest cabin is decorated in an individual color scheme for a totally unique feel. The owner’s suite runs the full beam of the wheelhouse deck and includes fold-down balconies and huge dressing rooms.

Her naval architecture has been provided by Benetti and Pierluigi Ausonio, whilst her elongated and linear exterior is also the work of the inhouse Benetti team.

Escape to the gorgeous Indian Ocean

Whole tropical island within atoll in Indian Ocean. Uninhabited and wild subtropical isle with palm trees. Blank sand on a tropical island.

LANA is available to charter in the Indian Ocean in the winter months. From white sand beaches and gorgeous coves to lush rolling hills and volcanic formed islands, the destination will satisfy anyone looking for total relaxation.

The beautifully secluded islands dotted across the clear and warm sea offer a chance of total escapism. Whether you are diving amongst the incredible coral reefs of the Maldives or taking in the breathtaking landscapes any of the 115 islands that make up the Seychelles, an Indian Ocean yacht charter on the luxurious superyacht LANA is one you won’t ever forget.

Azzam cost around $605 million to finish.

2. Fulk Al Salamah – 538ft

Fulk Al Salamah

3. Eclipse – 533ft

Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Eclipse cost an estimated $500 million to build back in 2009.

At 533 feet long,  Eclipse  was the world’s biggest superyacht until Azzam was constructed four years later.

The ship is fitted with 18 guest cabins and can accommodate up to 36 guests and 66 crew members.

Eclipse

Its stand-out features include two helipads, a wood-burning fire pit and a 16m swimming pool that transforms into a dance floor.

4. Dubai – 531ft

At just two feet shorter, Dubai is the fourth largest superyacht in the world at 531 feet.

The ship was commissioned in 1995 but work was not completed until 2006 and cost an estimated $400 million.

Dubai

From 2006 to 2009, it was the world’s largest superyacht.

Ob board, Dubai’s eight decks boast a disco, a cinema, a submarine and a lobster tank.

5. Dilbar – 512ft

Named after the late mother of the owner, Uzbekistan-born billionaire Alisher Usmanov,  Dilbar  was built in 2016.

6. Prince Abdulaziz – 482ft

The boat is equipped with an on deck jacuzzi, two helicopter landing pads, swimming pool, tender garage, fitness hall, cinema and a large conference room.

8. El Mahrousa – 478ft

El Mahrousa was built in 1865 on the River Thames and held the title for world’s biggest yacht for more than 100 years.

It was designed by British naval architect Oliver Lang for the Ottoman governor of Egypt.

El Mahrousa

Translated to ‘the protected’, El Mahrousa became the first ship to cross the  Suez Canal  back in 1869 and has since been a naval training ship for the Egyptian government.

It is the oldest active superyacht in the world.

9. Nord – 466ft

The newest superyacht on the list, Nord was only completed this year.

It covers six decks and can accommodate up to 36 guests in its 20 cabins.

Nord gives Dilbar a run for its money with a huge list of fun features.

Nord

These include a gym, elevator, swimming pool, cinema, tender garage, swimming pool, barbecue, beach club, spa room, sauna and beauty salon.

The ship also has two helicopter pads, one on the bow of the yacht and one on the top deck.

Made up of six decks, the ship can accommodate up to 36 day guests and 25 overnight guests.

Remember that “floating hotel” residential superyacht with condos available from R160 million ?

Well, we’re taking a look inside now, imagining what it would be like to be one of the world’s elite who has just bought a permanent spot onboard.

The Somnio, which aptly means “to dream ” in Latin, is an incredible 222-metre vessel with six decks and 39 luxury condos with completely customisable layouts across six floors.

When it launches in 2024, it will be the largest yacht in the world by both length and volume:

Winch Design and Tillberg Design of Sweden, as well as Luttenberger Design, is behind this superyacht, being built by Norwegian ship designer and builder VARD at a cost of around $600 million (that’s around R8,5 billion):

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Somnio (@somnioyacht)

Here’s co-founder Captain Erik Bredhe:

“Beauty may be found as much on the inside of Somnio as it is on the outside. As the only residential superyacht in the world, we are delighted to work with designers that complement our exacting standards. Our owners will experience only the best, as is befitting of a yacht of this nature.”

The condos will range in size from 148 square metres to 600 square metres, per Luxury Columnist , with the biggest Somnio condo taking up most of the top deck.

Each design house has released its first renderings of the superyacht and its “floating apartments”:

The condo owners will have the opportunity to work with either of the superyacht designers for up to three months to choose their room layout and materials (as environmentally responsible as possible), including lighting, artwork, and furniture:

Some features that one can opt for, tailored to their preferences, are parquet flooring, outside dining spaces, stylish chandeliers, and semi-circular beds.

No dream is too big it seems as one can also choose to include a gym, a personal kitchen, a walk-in closet, a library, or an added living room space with a private balcony if they so wish:

The design house will also help to source items such as luxury linens, cutlery and crockery. If an owner has a specific interior decorator that they’d like to work with, they can also bring them in to help.

Besides having a private space completely decked out to one’s needs, there will also be restaurants, bars, cinemas, music halls, an onboard beach club, and a 10 000-bottle capacity wine cellar and tasting room.

World-class medical care will also be provided, as well as a full concierge service for that added ease and luxury.

Besides spending an unimaginable amount on a condo, one can only grab a spot if they’ve been invited or have a referral, after which their identity will remain completely anonymous:

Having a global address will open you up to a life of slow travel sailing to the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, or New York.

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

10 of the biggest yachts at this year's Palm Beach International Boat Show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach's waterfront from March 21-24 — bringing with it some of the largest, most luxurious yachts in the world.

The Super Yacht Show Palm Beach features a range of boats that are longer than 100 feet, including 18 that are longer than 151 feet.

Here's a look at 10 of the biggest boats that visitors to the show can experience up close.

Come Together

This 197-foot behemoth with a price tag that starts at $59.95 million makes it the most expensive boat for sale at the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Come Together provides plenty of space and amenities to do as its name suggests and bring more than a dozen people together for an adventure at sea, according to its listing on the show's website.

It was built in 2022 by Amels and features a hybrid propulsion system. The interiors were done by Winch Design of London, with materials including Jerusalem limestone, light matte oak and walnut, and bronze. The ship's six cabins can house up to 14 guests, the listing said.

A 27-meter sun deck features a Jacuzzi with a sunbathing area, gym equipment, sheltered bar and wind-protected dining table.

You can find Come Together in the water at Ramps C and D.

Hospitality

Want to buy the 164-foot Hospitality? The price starts at $29.75 million, according to the yacht's listing on the boat show's website.

The Westport-built vessel was first constructed in 2011 and refit in 2021. It has seven cabins that can accommodate 16 guests. That includes a primary suite and a VIP suite. It also features a sun deck with a hot tub and sunbathing area.

The ship has traveled "to some of the world's most remote places with an impressive 4,000+ nautical mile range," its listing said.

You can find Hospitality in the water at Ramp E at the show.

The 155-foot Ancora was just completed in August by manufacturer Mengi Yay, its listing said. It is being presented by Fraser Yachts.

Ancora was built for charter use and has a master suite with a private balcony, plus four staterooms including two doubles and two convertibles, allowing for up to 10 guests, the listing said.

Summer charter rates with Fraser run from about $282,000 per week in the western Mediterranean Sea to about $260,000 per week in the winter in the Caribbean, according to Fraser's website .

You can find Ancora in the water at Ramp 2.

Next Chapter

This Benetti-built vessel is 180 feet and 6 inches and was built in 2003 with a refit in 2022, the listing said.

Next Chapter's six cabins — including a split-level master suite with an observation lounge and private study — can accommodate up to 13 people. It features a Jacuzzi, gym and beach club, and is built for charter use, the listing said.

The price starts at $19.9 million, and the ship is being presented at the show by The International Yacht Co.

Next Chapter will be in the water at Ramp E.

For $21 million, you can be the new owner of the Feadship-built Berilda, a 155-foot yacht built in 2001 and refit in 2020-21, according to its listing.

The yacht has "the highest pedigree with a documented history of excellent owners and meticulous care," the listing said. That ownership includes Royal Swedish Yacht Club member Sten Tegner, and Richard and Leslie Fairbanks.

The current owner bought Berilda in 2021 and has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice and through Europe, New England, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, the listing said. The yacht features six cabins for up to 14 people and quarters for a crew of up to 10.

Berilda will be in water at Ramp C.

Liberty, built by Trinity, is 187 feet and 2 inches, according to its listing. The yacht is designed for entertaining, the listing said, with social spaces including a dance floor.

Liberty was built in 2012, with work including a paint job, main engine rebuild, new generators and 10-year survey completed since 2018. The price starts at $24.75 million and the ship is being shown by The International Yacht Co.

The yacht has six cabins for 12 guests, with additional capacity for 13 crew, the listing said.

Named simply W, this 188-foot Feadship yacht is being shown by its manufacturer, according to its listing.

The vessel, originally launched as Larisa in 2013, had a major refit in 2020 and was renamed at that time, the listing said. W's owner changed the livery and antifouling, among other alterations, over the past 10 months, the listing said.

W will be in the water at Ramp C.

Priced at $20.9 million and being shown by exhibitor FGI Yacht Group, the 164-foot Tsumat was built by Trinity in 2012 and refit last year, according to its listing.

The exterior was designed by Geoff Van Aller. The interior by Ramón Alonso features leather, suede, marble and walnut, with onyx floors.

There are six staterooms for up to 12 guests and housing for a 10-person crew, the listing said.

Tsumat will be in the water at Ramps 2 and D.

The Nita K II is about 171 feet and was built by Amels in 2004, the listing said. It's priced starting at $23.9 million and presented by Merle Wood & Associates.

A refit in 2021-22 included an overhaul of the main engines and generators, and a 20-year Lloyd's class special survey was completed earlier this year, the listing said.

The interior was designed by Alberto Pinto and Laura Sessa, and the yacht can accommodate up to 12 people in five staterooms, plus room for 14 crew members in seven cabins, the listing said.

Nita K II will be in the water at Ramp D.

If it tells you anything about the level of luxury aboard the BG Charade, this 157-foot yacht was built by Feadship in 1990 for the late Paul Allen of Microsoft, the listing said. Under Allen, the BG Charade completed three circumnavigations and served as the honeymoon venue for Bill and Melinda Gates.

A technical and cosmetic refit was completed in 2016 and included new generators, rebuilt engines, new teak on the exterior and a complete electrical system update, the listing said.

BG Charade has six cabins for up to 12 guests, plus accommodations for up to 10 crew, the listing said.

The yacht will be in the water at Ramp 7.

Bonus: Talisman C

The epically long — 231.6 feet — and super-luxurious Talisman C, built by Turquoise in 2011, will be shown by Burgess Yachts in the water at Ramps D and E.

Millennials Are Buying Yachts

Ten years from now, Millennials will have taken over the superyacht world. At least that’s the forecast by several experts who are seeing ages of yacht buyers trending younger.

That trend is expected to continue, according to research from Italian yacht builder Rossinavi and the University of Monaco, with the average age of superyacht buyers decreasing 10 to 15 years over the next decade. That could make Millennials the primary buyers of superyachts.

The topic of younger buyers is a constant discussion in shipyard boardrooms and among designers looking to modify their designs to this changing market. It was also one of the topics at the recent Yachtmaster event in Key West, hosted by Benetti Yachts . Benetti sponsors Yachtmaster events twice a year (the European edition was in Budapest last month) to brief captains and other professionals on new trends in the superyacht industry.

Benetti Yachtmasters 2024

“We have been doing this event for 24 years now,” Benetti Americas manager Nick Bischoff told Robb Report . “The intent is to continue to build relationships with influencers of our current and prospective owners. In the beginning that meant mostly captains, but it’s expanded to include surveyors and owners’ reps, too.” The ultimate goal, says Bischoff, is for participants not only to network, but “put their heads together to create an ever-improving onboard experience both for owners and crew.”

Many seminars focused on the concept of onboard lifestyle, which most brokers and shipyards see as a primary driver for purchasing a yacht. Benetti’s head of product, Sebastiano Vida, also spoke about how lifestyle influences new designs in the yachts.

But Jason Dunbar, a broker and appraisal surveyor with Vessel Value Survey, recommended tough love to the brokers. His discussion about managing expectations for newbie owners included advice about being “realistic” with owners who are flush with cash, but might be new to the superyacht world. If an owner wants a brand-new 120-footer with a crew of six, but has a budget of $8 million, the broker is the one who needs to break the bad news. “A good broker has to tell people ‘Listen, that’s just not going to happen,’” says Dunbar. “That will save a lot of headaches down the road and will hopefully keep a client in boating for the long term.”

Benetti Yachtmaster Even Oasis Deck

A new buyer is often coming off a one-week charter that was magical: perfect weather, a well-oiled boat, and a crew looking forward to a little R&R after hustling all week for the charter guests. “It’s relatively easy to make things work like that one week at a time,” says Dunbar. “But a new owner who wants to use their boat for 10, 15, or 30 weeks, that’s a totally different thing. You may have to tell them they need to hire two crews and rotate them—which will be news to them.” He said that overworking the crew will “burn through humans.” The crew will be miserable, he says, which will make the boat not live up to the owners’ expectations. “The next thing you know these new owners will be long gone from yachting.”

Fraser Yachts CEO Anders Kurtén sees the new buyers as a boon for design creativity in an old-school industry. “It starts with a piece of paper,” he says. “We sit down and start designing these boats for younger clients and we see similar trends. Basically they all want to live their shore-based lives on a yacht.”

The segmented and often claustrophobic interiors of many current superyacht designs, says Dirand, just doesn’t float with the new generation. “Young owners’ preferences are honed by hospitality and a knowledge of architectural trends,” he says.

Azimut Benetti Group

Because of that, wellness centers have become focal points of design. As moguls like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have made clear as of late, having six-pack abs in middle age is the new Lamborghini. These new owners expect their boats to be designed with beach clubs with gyms, saunas, massage areas that allow owners and guests to work out or relax, amidst warm sun rays and luscious sea breezes.

Kurtén also pointed to green tech as key for the new generation of clients. “We’ve hit a point where a 150-foot sailboat can go across the Atlantic without burning a drop of fuel. And motoryachts can function on battery-only mode, at least when they are close to port,” he says. “That’s important to these new clients—they want to be green. A few years ago that was something you said at a cocktail party, but today it’s a reality for a lot of buyers.”

Peter Selivanoff, senior yacht service manager for Fraser, also spoke about how owners are seeking highly specialized crews who can perform multiple functions across the yacht.

Navigating these new realities is an important part for the industry to future-proof itself in the competitive realm of ultra-luxury products. This is a place where youth may not spring eternal but, at least for now, it reigns supreme.
