Jeff Bezosâ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida
The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.
By Lola Fadulu
First, Jeff Bezosâ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vesselâs size â itâs more than 400 feet long â has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.
Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.
Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.
The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a âtimeless, contemporary style,â according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezosâ partner, Lauren SĂĄnchez.
Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.
It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. SĂĄnchez.
Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .
Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.
Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .
Koru is Maori for âcoilâ or âloopâ and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.
Mr. Bezosâ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community â including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed â Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Amazon founder, space enthusiast , and the third wealthiest man in the world Jeff Bezos has a parking problem with his mega-yacht .
At a Florida marina this week it became apparent that the $500m ship was too big to be moored with the other private yachts at Port Everglades.
At an impressive 417ft in length, âKoruâ â the Maori word meaning new life or regeneration â had to be moored alongside oil tankers, container ships and the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship.
Port Everglades is a major gateway for Caribbean cruises and international trade, but the yacht section cannot accommodate vessels larger than 400ft.
At just over that length (almost twice the length of an Airbus A380 or equivalent to four blue whales) other accommodations had to be made.
A spokesperson for the port told The Times that it was in an area for energy ships and that when such large yachts come into port, they are docked wherever there is space.
Koru came into port last week from Gibraltar and with three masts is the second-largest sailing vessel in the world after Sailing Yacht A, owned by Russian fertiliser billionaire Andrey Melnichenko and designed by Philippe Starck.
While it is pipped in length, it is nevertheless the tallest sailing yacht in the world with its masts reaching 230ft into the air.
Despite its enormous size â or perhaps because of it â Koru has a support vessel, the Arbeona, on which Bezos keeps his helicopter, jet skis, and luxury cars. That 246ft boat is docked four miles away at Dania Beach.
It costs an estimated $25m per year to staff and operate Koru, which has three decks and a pool. The Amazon founder proposed to fiancée Lauren Sanchez onboard over the summer after five years of dating.
During an interview with Vogue , Sanchez was asked about her apparent resemblance to the figurehead of the yacht â depicting a woman carved in the style of a Roman goddess with long hair and a flowing gown â after press suggested that it was a carving of her. However, according to Sanchez, that speculation is not true.
âIâm very flattered, but itâs not,â she said, before adding that the figurehead was one of Bezosâ favourite mythological figures, Freyja, the goddess associated with love, sex, war and gold.
She also poked fun at what the statue would look like âif it wasâ her, as she jokingly made the gesture of having larger breasts.
Bezos and Sanchez recently announced they are relocating from Seattle to Miami to be nearer his mother and adoptive father who are both in their late 70s.
The billionaire has bought two neighbouring properties on Indian Creek Island alongside Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Tom Brady, and Norman Braman, who owns the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jeff Bezosâ superyacht is in Florida. Itâs so big it has to anchor at a seaport.
- Madeleine Marr Miami Herald (TNS)
South Florida, meet The Koru.
Thatâs the name of Jeff Bezosâ colossal yacht that just dropped anchor in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The word means ânew beginningsâ in Maori, the language spoken by indigenous Polynesians of mainland New Zealand, where the Amazon founderâs private jet was spotted in 2020.
How ginormous is this triple-masted behemoth? Roughly 400 feet long and 250 feet tall, itâs the size of a cruise ship. That ginormous.
The luxury schooner is so big it canât even hang with other leisure ships; she reportedly is parked near two oil tankers. It has two pools, a hot tub, multiple lounges, dining areas and bars, and perhaps the piĂšce de rĂ©sistance, a wooden figurehead on the prow rumored to be modeled after Bezosâ fiancĂ©e, Lauren Sanchez .
The 59-year-old billionaire shelled out about $500M for his snazzy new toy, which was built just for him in the Netherlands by Oceanco, the company that also constructed Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jonesâ superyacht, the Bravo Eugenia .
Get used to seeing The Koru around, especially if you set sail on a vacation. Bezos, a Palmetto High alum, lives back here full time now, after spending three decades in Seattle, busy reinventing the way the world shops.

Jeff Bezosâ 417-Foot Yacht Drops Anchor in South Florida amid Move to Miami
The Amazon founder announced his move earlier this month
Jeff Bezos has brought his 417-foot-long yacht to Florida!
The Amazon founder's $500-million dollar vessel named Koru dropped anchor in Port Everglades, reports WPLG . Its massive size made it have to be parked next to an oil tanker and alongside other large cargo carriers, per Gizmodo .
Koru is the largest sailing yacht in the world and features a trio of masts and several decks, according to Boat International .
It was first spotted at sea earlier this year . Its arrival on the southeastern coast comes nearly a month after the entrepreneur, 59, announced that he was relocating to Miami from Seattle. Bezos announced his move in an Instagram post published on Nov. 2.
"I've lived in Seattle longer than I've lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here. As exciting as the move is, it's an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart," he shared in the caption.

The post included a clip of Bezos giving a tour of Amazon's first office, which was filmed by his father. He wrote in the post that his parents, along with his fiancée Lauren Sånchez , inspired his move.
"My parents [ Miguel and Jacklyn ] have always been my biggest supporters," Bezos wrote. "They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger (Miami Palmetto High class of '82 â GO Panthers!) I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami."
Bezos and SĂĄnchez, 53, took their relationship public in January 2019. PEOPLE confirmed that the two are engaged in May. The news came after the two were seen traveling on the yacht during a romantic European getaway .
Apart from having a wooden sculpture resembling SĂĄnchez , the boat became the couple's preferred method of transportation during their summer travels, including stops in Saint-Tropez and multiple parts of Italy . The yacht was also the location of the couple's engagement party in August.

Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos’ 410FT Oceanco ‘Koru’ Sailing Yacht Docks In South Florida
Oceanco Yacht
Synonymous with entrepreneurial success, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has channeled his passion for ocean exploration through an impressive fleet of luxury marine vessels, including superyachts and megayachts. These magnificent marine builds represent Bezos’ deep-seated fascination with the mysteries of the ocean. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, his yachts serve as a gateway to maritime adventures, allowing him to traverse the globe’s waters in remarkable comfort and style. Jeff Bezos is making headlines in the luxury yacht world as his vessel, Koru by Oceanco, finished its long-awaited journey around the world and made its appearance in Fort Lauderdale at a South Florida seaport.
Measuring an astonishing 410 feet in length, the modern sailing yacht stands out as the largest in the world. Its sheer size is so enormous that the original plans to dock Koru at the Port of Everglades were redirected to Fort Lauderdale where it would stay parked next to gigantic oil tankers. The exterior showcases an exterior design in collaboration between Oceanco and Dykstra Naval Architects, perfectly blending mondern and traditional yacht building.
Inside, the interior highlights a contemporary style with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals, courtesy of Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi Interior Design and Decoration. The three-masted sailing yacht offers ample deck space to provide a variety of breathtaking views, three jacuzzis, and a swimming pool. Now that Oceanco’s Koru sailing yacht is in South Florida with Jeff Bezos, we expect to see its marine presence all over social media. Business | as port everglades bids adieu to director, cruisers, shippers and even jeff bezos see upgrades in services.
But when crews operating two of them belonging to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos needed dock space last November to park his 417-foot sailing yacht Koru, as well as a companion 250-foot vessel bearing “toys” suitable for a billionaire, the port ended up hosting both for roughly 10 days.
“We weren’t allowed to say anything about it,” mused Jonathan Daniels, the chief executive officer/port director at Port Everglades. “We could see it from a distance.”
But news of the visit, as well as photos, went worldwide anyway.
The episode served as a fitting end point for Daniels, who after nearly four years of leading the port from the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic to a full bore economic recovery, is leaving South Florida early next month to take the reins of the Port of Baltimore. That Port Everglades found temporary berths for both Bezos boats is a testament to its ability to provide services that many superyacht owners can’t find anywhere else in the region, marine advocates say. And it’s a nice add-on business for a port that has seen all of its commercial sectors thriving amid inflation and an economy beset by recession fears.
“We are fielding requests because of the availability of docks,” Daniels said. “We are hearing from the Marine Industries Association of South Florida and others who want to bring in these large yachts for servicing.”
“If we can fit that in, that’s another resource for the marine industry as a whole,” he added.
It was the marine association that made the connection between the Bezos camp and the port, said Phil Purcell, CEO and president.
“Fort Lauderdale is the yachting capital of the world,” he said. “It makes sense. We wish there were more — 70% of all vessels related to the yachting industry come through Port Everglades.”
As he leaves town, Daniels can point to a port that has advanced in annual World Bank rankings of 348 ports for cargo operations performance from 116th In 2021 to 89th in 2022. It has advanced from 11th to fifth in North America in that time and is second behind Jacksonville in Florida.
“We’re seeing a return on investment is showing itself to unbiased third parties,” Daniels said. “It’s a great position to be in when you see improvement. That to me is very gratifying. And the (county) commission and the administration are making investments in the right locations.”
In his state-of-the-county address late last year, then-Mayor Lamar Fisher hailed the port and the county’s other two “economic engines,” Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Visit Lauderdale, as helping to make the county “stronger than ever.”
“Port Everglades welcomed 2.88 million passengers, eight cruise lines, and 35 ships in FY2023,” Fisher said. “Terminal 4 at Port Everglades has been transformed to welcome Disney Cruise Line.”
But the competition for cruise and cargo business is fierce among ports from the Gulf of Mexico to all along the Atlantic Seaboard, according to state port advocates.
A number of challenges lie ahead in the form of ports in other states seeking to poach business, something that Florida has been very good at, particularly when Southern California ports were all but immobilized by huge backlogs of cargo from Asia during the pandemic.
“Texas and Georgia are about to eat Florida’s lunch,” said Edie Ousley, spokeswoman for the Tallahassee-based Florida Ports Council.
She noted that Texas recently approved “an historic” $200 million for 31 projects, more than Florida’s $135 million to $149 million annually for 14 projects.
“Georgia is expanding its Brunswick port to become the largest hub for auto imports,” she added. “Florida needs to keep in mind what these other competitive states are doing. The only way Florida can continue to compete is through continuous strong investments.”
Since the COVID debacle, according to Mike Rubin, the council C EO and president, in “all of my seaports I’ve seen growth. I have some of the best port directors here in the state of Florida.. That includes Jonathan. His leadership and advocacy. We’re going to miss him. Obviously that’s a benefit to the people up in Baltimore.”
During an interview Friday, Daniels gave a wide-ranging appraisal of where the port stands going forward. Expansion, he said, is the byword for all of the port’s major business, whether it involves cruise lines, cargo, or energy deliveries.
A key unknown, he suggested, is the degree to which disruptions caused by the conflicts in the Middle East and Europe will impact commerce.
“There are some lines such as Maersk going all the way south and around South Africa,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve seen the tip of what the impact is going to be.”
Cruise menu changes
For the port, the cruise business has changed dramatically , as its profile of lines serving Broward changed since COVID-19 pandemic.
“We didn’t realize how quickly it would materialize and ultimately what it would do to the economy,” Daniels said. “Certainly with cruise lines it was total devastation.”
The industry, he believes, was treated “unfairly” as it was locked down and idled for 13 months. It was a period that cost the port $92 million.
“A lot of people felt the cruise industry was responsible for inventing COVID and certainly transmitting it from nation to nation across borders,” he said. “There were so many other paths in which COVID was moving around the world.”
Now, the port now has 11 lines using its facilities — a count that includes Balearia, a Spain-based ferry service that operates from the port to Bimini and Freeport, the Bahamas.
The emphasis these days is on luxury lines such as Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Corp’s Holland America and Princess lines. Disney Cruise Line inaugurated service late last year, a brand coveted by the port.
Others include Azamara Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard. the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Silversea Cruises and Viking Cruises.
Crystal is scheduled to return to the port next year after a “long hiatus.”
“We’re seeing more long-duration cruises out of here,” Daniels said. “We’re seeing some circumnavigation cruises.”
Some last more than 100 days and call on 50 to 60 ports.
To upgrade services demanded by a largely upper income, retired, older and more international passengers who are taking longer cruises, “we created our cruise operations division.”
The unit consists of employees who ensure both passengers and companies get what they need. “They meet on a regular basis,” he said, making sure that, among other things, out-of-town cruisers get to and from the airport in a seamless fashion.
On any given Saturday or Sunday, some 50,000 people move in and out of the port each day.
Terminal expansion plans are underway with Royal Caribbean and Princess. Even now, the port has the wherewithal to host Royal Caribbean’s new Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship which recently debuted at PortMiami, its home port.
The terminals could be gutted or torn down and rebuilt from scratch. But any redesign will focus on better access and movement with the help of technology. “We all have to get better in the way we process and allow people to get off the port site,” Daniels said. “That will end up shortening port times.”
Cargo: A north-south “stalwart”
Although the cruise business went down, the movement of cargo kept going during the pandemic, Daniels said.
“We still had the diversification of the energy sector as well as containers moving through the port,” he said. “We did not terminate a single employee during that time.”
The port is closing out a turning notch project in its Southport section to add additional berthing capacity. It also has taken delivery of six new “Super Post-Panamax” container gantry cranes as part of its $471 million project to expand its deepwater turnaround area for cargo ships.
And the port, traditionally known as a north-south facility whose traffic is focused on North and South America, has been trafficking east-west cargo with ports in Europe and beyond.
“We’ve had service from India,” he said. “We are truly a stalwart and a benchmark for north-south trade to Latin America.”
As for the latter, two more lines have opened service through the port to South America, with one “advertising connectivity into the heartland of the United States all the way up to Chicago.”
The expansion discussion inevitably led to what is probably the port’s biggest weakness.
“We are always searching for available land,” he said. “It comes down to finding an acre at a time.”
That, in turn, leads to conflicts among business lines. Recently, land used for cargo was converted into parking space for cruise passengers.
On another front, the port’s long-awaited harbor deepening and widening project has leaped in cost from about $350 million in 2016 to more than $1 billion. The costs have largely risen as a result of additional environmental requirements to ensure the preservation and regeneration of coral.
The forecast now is for a completion for the project in 2034.
Still, Daniels said he likes the momentum he sees across a spectrum of ongoing and future business expansion. And he wishes he could be in the neighborhood when it happens.
“It’s going to be very bittersweet to leave,” he said.
This article has been updated to reflect the proper name for Silversea Cruises, and to correct a caption of gantries at the port.

Bezos and Sanchez, who went public with their relationship in 2019, were first spotted on the new $500 million superyacht earlier this week off the coast of Spain.
The vessel, believed to be the largest sailing yacht in the world, had a rocky road to completion. It caused an uproar when its Dutch shipmaker, Oceanco, requested that a historic bridge in Rotterdam in the Netherlands be dismantled for the yacht to pass because its masts were too tall to pass through underneath.
The 100-year-old Koningshaven Bridge, nicknamed "De Hef" by locals, had been renovated in 2017; after that, the city had vowed not to take it apart again, according to Dutch broadcaster Rijnmond .
Residents grew outraged and even threatened to egg the yacht if the bridge was dismantled, prompting Oceanco to withdraw its request and quietly tow away the yacht to another shipyard without its masts, which were installed later to avoid the clearance issue.
Koru was seen doing sea trials , which are comprised of several tests and usually mark one of the last phases of construction, in February. The yacht made its maiden voyage in April when it left Oceanco's facilities to travel to Gibraltar on the way to Bezos.
Check out the photos of the yacht's figurehead on the Daily Mail .

An Inside Look at Jeff Bezosâ $500 Million Superyacht and What It Costs To Keep It Afloat
C liché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .
Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post â which is approximately 23 miles per hour.
Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Hereâs a look at the Koruâs extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.

Key Features
As expected Bezosâ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion â as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes â he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.
The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .
Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezosâ fiancĂ©e Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

Support Vessel
One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.
Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. Itâs also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isnât believed to own one â at least not yet.
Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.
On-Board Crew
It probably isnât a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.
The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think thatâs a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.
Annual Operating Costs
Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didnât end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.
The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).
When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesnât always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.
In November 2023, the billionaireâs yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.
While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, heâs still living well within his budget.
