LEGO IDEAS Set 40487: Sailboat Adventure

I invite you all to hop on board and come on a sailboat adventure with me as I review the latest LEGO Gift With Purchase (GWP), Set 40487.

I was provided this set to review by LEGO via Brickcentral but all opinions here are my own. The set is available from August 1st in LEGO Stores or at LEGO.com when spending over €200/$200/£200 and while stocks last. Stick around beyond the end of the review for some bonus shots too.

Learn the ropes – What’s in the box

The set contains 330 pieces. They are used to build a sailing boat on a small base, two minifigures, and a stand for the two included dolphins. It’s important to note that the Sailboat Adventure set is based on a design by my Brickcentral teammate @yc_solo . He submitted this boat build as a LEGO IDEAS competition entry… and won! The prize? His submission was converted into this real set.

Running a tight ship – Meet the crew

The instructions included in the set include words from YC_Solo explaining some of the sentiment and meaning in his set, one of the things revealed there is that the figures in the set represent him and his wife.

The male figure is the most noteworthy thanks to his new torso print. Though both figures look suitably nautical thanks to their sailers’ neckerchiefs and blue and white stripes. The male figure gets a pair of binoculars for looking out to sea while both crew members get a life vest to make sure they are nice and safe.

There are also two dolphins on a simple build using window panels to raise them up. It’s surprising to get two dolphins in the set, LEGO tends to include the bare minimum of animals so getting a pair feels a little deluxe.

Rock the boat – About the build

What of the main build? Not much has changed from the original IDEAS submission from what I can see.

Some additional gold parts used as a railing and for other details around the edge of the boat replace some original part usage. Again, these features give this set a nice prestigious feel. The only stickers in the set are those used to place the name of the vessel on its hull.

Building the set was certainly interesting. The boat is built on a couple of plates with some clear parts to give an impression of water. It’s a supporting part of the structure so cannot be easily removed. I hid it with a simulated ocean in most of my shots, but it does add something to the display value of the set. I found the sail to be a little frustrating to build, but it looks good once built and it is sturdier than I thought it was going to be during the build process.

The deck has several printed wooden planks and a small cabin. The cabin itself looks very nice but it’s not quite big enough to fit figures in, though you can pose one in the doorway.

There is a little space up front where minifigs can be positioned but the best position for them is at the rear with the tiller or on the two studs on the starboard side of the cabin.

A shot across the bows – BTS

I’ve never really had to simulate water in much of my photography but with this set, there really is no choice. I decided to keep things relatively dry and use blue cellophane. I also just used a bit of blue card for the backdrop. That’s probably the thing I’m least happy with in these photos.

For the night photos I simply switched to black. I also used some techniques for shooting rainfall that I picked up from @fourbrickstall

In some photos, I also used some cotton wool to simulate disturbed water, a facial mister, and water spray for additional water and atmosphere. I knew I also wanted to show @yc_solo using his binoculars so I made a crude cut out from cardboard to try and get that effect in-camera.

Sink or Swim – Final Thoughts

The Sailboat Adventure feels more premium than many GWP sets. This is down to everything from the exclusive torso, inclusion of two dolphins, gold lacquered parts to the fact it comes in a proper LEGO box, not the thin cardboard that GWP often comes in, and a proper IDEAS instruction book with a foreword by the designer. On top of that, there’s only one pair of stickers, those used for the name of the boat.

It’s a great-looking design that stays very faithful to the original submission and looks good on the shelf. The one criticism I can level at this build is that the ship does not easily remove from its stand and it’s probably not quite sturdy enough to be played with heavily. But I think most people will be using this in a more ornamental fashion.

My main gripe however is the required spend. It’s hard to criticize any “free” set for price but the main incentive to buy from LEGO is their gifts and loyalty points. This one requires a much bigger outlay than many previous GWP sets which will render it out of reach for some who may really want it.

It’s most likely this will end up in the hands of Star Wars collectors since there is a big new UCS release at the same time which will qualify you for this. (There’s a notable irony here for anyone that knows YC_Solo).

Ignoring the qualifying spend, this is a very good-looking display set with some nice parts. It’s also a bit different from other recent LEGO sets which adds to its appeal. Anyone who gets this set will find it really is shipshape.

In deep water – Bonus shots

With the review out of the way I told YC_solo I was going to have some fun with his included minifigure representation. So here are some bonus pictures for your enjoyment.

“Stop buying LEGO!” Indeed. LOL

I really love how you did the water and those rain shots are fantastic!

The cabin is indeed cramped, you can fit one minifigure in seated or sleeping position. The inside was slightly modified from my version, mine was white and smoother with some SNOT techniques in the central part of the hull but it was definitely more fragile. The front was also slightly modified (I had the front going out at an angle and parts to allow it, which didn’t help stability) but the back is a close 1-to-1 match.

BTW the ship can stand without the baseplate, unless you rotate the sail and it capsize. 😉 My version was even worse (because of the SNOT parts), it was resting on a smaller footprint.

Funnily I did have a version prior to submission where I had a the ship mounted on a baseplate but removed it because it exceeded the allowed 250 parts (the TLG designer “cheated” and added 80 parts to the set, and because the palm tree was removed, almost 90 more for the boat itself.)

So a hint for those who think the price tag is too high: it’s not my fault, TLG did that! LOL

Thanks so much again for the great review and amazing pictures! 🙂

Its possible I was nit-picking because I did not want to seem totally biased! I did try and fit a figure in the cabin and failed when I thought one should be able to lie in there. Also, I assumed it couldn’t be removed from the base just because of the way it was built, apologies for not putting that to the test. Again with the Price point, I get it. LEGO isn’t a charity and this is a set with 330 pieces it would be £$25-35 if they actually released it. So its fine. But many people do not spend £200 in one go, so the real shame is that the set cannot just be purchased 🙂

Its great though, and I am glad you liked the pics!

How to score the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) GWP

July 30, 2021 By Jay Ong 2 Comments

lego sailboat

It’s almost August 2021 where there’s a heap of new releases ready to drop on LEGO.com, like the UCS Republic Gunship or the Volkswagen T2 Campervan , or if you’re in North America – all the June/Summer releases .

To sweeten the deal, the 40487 Sailboat Adventures set will be available as a Gift with Purchase from LEGO.com , from 1 August onwards when you spend US$200 / £200 / AU$279 online.

LEGO VIP members get early access, from 1 – 3 August 2021, before the general release, which will be available from 4 – 29 August while stocks last.

lego sailboat

This is a massively substantial gift with purchase (which explains the high purchase threshold), coming in at 330 pieces, and this year’s Vintage Car GWP as the second LEGO Ideas Gift with Purchase.

lego sailboat

The set was the winner of the LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday contest , and designed by talented LEGO Instagrammer and Photographer @yc_solo .

This set is going to be exceedingly popular, not just because of its incredibly charming design, but as there are several big ticket sets and themes dropping on 1 August 2021, so I can absolutely see this one selling out immediately, so plan your purchases accordingly!

The LEGO Ideas 40487 Sailboat Adventures set will be available as a Gift with Purchase from LEGO.com , from 1 August onwards when you spend US$200 / £200 / AU$279 online.

What do you think of the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure set? Will you be trying to hit the purchase threshold to qualify for the set?

I’ve been waiting for a decent GWP before I order a couple of things (I’m thinking F.R.I.E.N.D.S Apartments together with Seinfeld) but the extremely limited nature of the freebie annoys me, having missed out on January’s car (I think I might have been waiting for a new set to be released at the time) , as it’s going to benefit resellers more than more selective buyers. They should make enough of these things to last a few weeks, if not the whole month, rather than have them go out of stock in days if not hours.

I’d love this, but I’m too old to go through all the hoops required to make sure I’m first in the queue. It’d be great if Lego has actually made enough of them for everyone who will doubtless want one. I’ll have a go at a civilised hour on Sunday if there’s anything I want that’s actually in stock.

World's no. 1 source for lego news, reviews, and fan creations., tag archives: russia, st. basil’s cathedral is bursting with colour.

Koen Zwanenburg has built this incredible recreation of the iconic Russian cathedral. The dark orange with hints of teal are the most prominent colours in the structure, however, it is the spires that really draw in the eye. Each has its own unique colour scheme and design from jagged blocky shapes to smooth flowing textures. Koen has found inventive ways to represent the swirling patterns of the spires as green minifigure arms are even used in one of the peaks.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Round the back of the display, horned tendrils portray more of the complex designs of the spires. After looking at the building for some time, the structure shares some similarities with gingerbread houses, mainly thanks to the white trim and vibrant colours used in this creation.

The Soviet ZIL-E167 can handle any terrain you throw at it

It’s a little cold in my LEGO room so I turned up the heat and put on a sweater. That leads me to believe that I probably don’t have what it takes to handle the real cold like what they have in Siberia and Urals. There’s a reason there are so many jokes about vodka drinking you in Russia or whatever. Tough terrain means tough people and tough vehicles. Thankfully, SarielLego has what it takes to handle any terrain as evidenced by this remote-controlled ZIL-E167. I’m loving the beefy tires, the orange color, the overall rugged shape, even the little moose decal is rather charming.

Tough and mean and olive green! Hoorah!

The reason the original castle set from 1978 was yellow and not gray is that LEGO didn’t want to encourage kids to build military stuff. All that changed with the abundance of gray in the Star Wars sets. Still they had similar hesitancy with olive green. It took the Pixar Cars line in 2011 to introduce the color and military builders rejoiced. So there, the joke is on you, LEGO! (That was much funnier when I thought of it earlier today.) While this particular shade of green is now available in many sets, it’s still a difficult color to amass in large quantities. That is just one of many reasons why this rough and tumble Soviet Ural-375D by Rolands Kirpis is so impressive. Another reason is each axle and the steering functions are run by Power Functions motors. It took a year to collect all the right parts to build this model but the end result is as mighty as the Ural mountains.

LEGO Soyuz launcher stands 1.25m high and took a year and a half to build

Since it’s first flight in 1966, the Russian Soyuz rocket system has become the world’s most frequently used launch vehicle. With over 1,700 flights in 50 years, this Russian stalwart has hauled cosmonauts, satellites, and cargo aloft, with its relatively simple design creating an enviable reliability record. However, this LEGO version of the latest Fregat version of the Soyuz is anything but simple — Jussi Koskinen has pulled out all the stops to capture every last feature of the spacecraft’s detailing. The scale of the effort involved is impressive — the model took 18 months to put together, and measures over 1.25m.

LEGO Russian Space Rocket

The overall structure of this massive model is excellent, and the shaping and angles on the lower boosters are particularly good. The smaller details are worth a look too — don’t miss the texturing around the base of the boosters, the scaffold-style connection between stages, and the nice integration of the Russian flag into the upper stage’s colour scheme. This formidable model wouldn’t look out of place on display beside the LEGO Ideas Saturn 5 set, and that’s high praise indeed.

Colorfully camoflauged Sukhoi SU-34 Fighter-bomber

I’ve always wondered why we don’t paint our military jets with blue camouflage so they blend in with the blue sky. Well, after a quick Google search, it appears that the Russians thought the same thing, because the wonderful camoflauge pattern on this Sukhoi SU-34 by ModernBrix is indeed accurate to the real-life jet . It’s an excellent choice, because we rarely see this type of camouflage pattern recreated in LEGO.

Sukhoi SU-34 Medium-Range Fighter/Bomber

Camouflage aside, the shaping is outstanding, especially on the cockpit and fuselage. The builder has also managed to fit side-by-side seating for two pilots in the cockpit — an uncommon feature the Sukhoi is known for — which eliminates the need for duplicate instruments required in the front and back of tandem seat fighter jets.

Nine chapels of St. Basil’s Cathedral are a marvelous example of LEGO microscale architecture

Markus Rollbühler is a LEGO product designer based in Billund, Denmark. Despite spending his weekdays working with LEGO pieces, Markus challenges himself to build microscale versions of the world’s most famous cathedrals in his spare time. His very special series of architectural masterpieces featuring Frauenkirche Dresden and Santa Maria della Salute is now joined by a marvelous copy of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

St. Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its nine chapels of vibrant colors. Markus did an amazing job recreating each of them in a unique building style using bricks, hoses, slopes, and tiles of over a dozen different colors. However, the most genius trick of the build is nine sonic screwdrivers right from Doctor Who sets used as crosses on top of the chapels.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

And, of course, the cathedral is totally worth checking out from all angles — make sure you visit Markus’ photosream for more high-res pictures!

Flying the unfriendly skies

From his Flickr stream, it’s clear that builder arwen qiea is a Cold War military vehicle buff. It’s an impressive portfolio of (mostly Soviet) tanks, missile carriers and navy vessels from the 50s and 60s. But his gigantic airplanes kind of steal the limelight! Here’s his latest one, a model of the Soviet TU-135, an experimental supersonic bomber from that era.

lego sailboat

From that angle, the TU-135 seems almost as sleek as a modern Russian fighter jet. But from a higher vantage point you can see why it was nicknamed the “flying wing”.

lego sailboat

So that’s a pretty big plane, right? Nope. THIS is a big plane…

lego sailboat

…say hello to the Russian Antonov AN-22, probably the largest turboprop ever built. And the big builds don’t stop there. His version of the Lockheed C5a Galaxy (a heavy transport used by the USAF) is so big it literally eats other LEGO models for breakfast!

And here it is, digesting its meal of tanks and other armaments:

Police department using Lego heads to hide identities under new law

MURRIETA, Calif. (KABC) – One California police department is gaining a lot of attention for a creative approach to its social media content.

The Murrieta Police Department was posting pictures on social media showing suspects’ faces covered up with Lego heads.

At first, the department started using emojis to align with a new state law, which took effect at the start of the year.

The law prevents police from sharing mug shots of people accused of non-violent crimes.

But Murrieta police won’t cover suspects’ faces with Lego heads on social media going forward. The department recently received a request from Lego asking them to stop due to trademarks.

The department plans on doing something different for future posts.

LEGO Fortnite: Best Vehicles, Ranked

LEGO Fortnite is a fun and exciting game mode added to Fortnite’s Season 5. Its interesting survival crafting mechanism has urged players to jump into this brick world and begin their next adventure. The procedurally generated map in LEGO Fortnite covers about 95 square kilometers . To traverse this vast and unpredictable terrain, players need to build vehicles.

Lego Fortnite: 6 Things To Do If You're Bored

Crafting vehicles from scratch shifts the player’s focus from fighting off enemies and starvation to building and creating. While it comes down to personal preferences, players should also assess their environment properly before building any vehicle. They need access to Rare crafting benches and upgraded tools to gather materials for a ride . This list ranks all the available vehicles in LEGO Fortnite – from the easiest to the most challenging material requirements.

Simple To Build

While LEGO Fortnite does not feature a traditional car with a powerful engine and leather seats, it allows players to build a makeshift car to make traveling a bit easier. Cars are the simplest vehicles players can craft to get somewhere quickly . They require minimal materials that are readily available in the early stages of the game, such as:

  • Dynamic Foundation
  • Thrusters (either small or large)
  • Wheels (either small or large)
  • Activation Switch

The only drawback is that these makeshift cars will only move in one direction: forward. If players wish to change their direction, they will need to hop out of the car and push the vehicle to face the direction they want. This makes them the lowest-ranked vehicle in LEGO Fortnite .

Alternatively, they can build up two huge towers on their dynamic platform and partially destroy each tower. Players should also attach more Thrusters and their respective Activation Switches to shift their car in any direction. This workaround takes some practice, but once players get used to it, they won’t have to rely on a steering wheel to steer their car.

Makes It Easy To Travel On Water

Boats are another easy-to-build vehicle in LEGO Fortnite . They make it easier for players to cross water bodies without having to swim long distances. Boats are perfect for people who’ve created their village right next to a water body. Players can witness the serene views as they sail through the waters to get to the other side.

How to Level Up Fast in LEGO Fortnite (Best XP Farming Methods)

The first step for building a boat is to lay down two Dynamic Foundations next to each other and push them till they are connected. Next, build a long brick foundation in the middle and place the following items on it:

  • Four Thrusters
  • Activation Switches
  • Medieval Railings (optional but recommended for safety purposes)
  • Wool Fabric (optional but can be used to make a flag at the back end of the boat)

The thrusters should be placed symmetrically, otherwise, the boat will not move forward and bend to one side. To make the boat ride even smoother, players can add small balloons at each of the four corners.

Allows Players To Have A Bird's Eye View Of Their World

In LEGO Fortnite , players can build a fully functional aircraft that can take them anywhere they want. It’s one of the best ways players can fast-travel through the expansive map. Besides that, being able to fly is super convenient and allows players to admire the vast scenery.

Lego Fortnite: All Crafting Stations (& What They Do)

Airplanes rank second on the best vehicles list since they give players a tactical advantage by letting them have a clear view of the battleground. To build a simple airplane, players will need:

  • One Dynamic Foundation
  • One Large Balloon
  • Two Large Thrusters
  • One Activation Switch

Players can snap together as many Dynamic Foundations as they want to increase space on their plane. However, they should remember that the bigger the plane’s surface is, the more Balloons and Thrusters players will need. The Thrusters will propel the plane upwards while the Large Balloons make sure that it stays in the air. Additionally, they can add wheels to either side of the platform to soften the landing.

Get From One Biome To Another Instantly

The Monorail tops the list of the best vehicles due to its insanely high speed and short travel time. Players can build a Monorail to drastically reduce the time required to travel between biomes . It’s pretty difficult for new beginners to build a monorail as it requires a lot of materials.

Before they can start building a monorail , players need to locate two elevated landscapes. These can either be found naturally on the map or made artificially using bricks. Players should make sure that these elevated peaks do not have any obstructions between them. Next, build a 12 x 2 x 1 thin floor to connect these peaks.

Once the elevated points are connected, players can place a pair of Dynamic Foundations on the thin floors in such a way that they do not touch each other. Next, place the following structures on this foundation:

  • Six Large Thrusters
  • Eight Small Wheels
  • Two Activation Switches

A stable build is still tough to lay down, but with practice, players can build a functioning monorail to make travel easier in LEGO Fortnite .

Biden administration revs up plans to transition from gas-powered vehicles to EVs

The nation’s slow transition to electric vehicles got a boost Wednesday when the Biden administration announced it had finalized the strongest-ever pollution standards for cars and light trucks.

The Environmental Protection Agency rule, which would begin taking effect with model year 2027, would require car manufacturers to increase sales of electric vehicles while cutting carbon emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said at a news conference that the rule marks the “strongest vehicle pollution technology standard ever finalized in United States history.”

“These technology standards for model years 2027 through 2032 will avoid more than 7 billion tons of carbon pollution,” Regan said. “That’s four times the total carbon pollution from [all] transportation in the year 2021. Cleaner vehicles and lower emissions mean so much to the people across this country.”

Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, including in California. The new EPA standards would represent a nearly 50% reduction in average projected greenhouse gas emissions levels for light-duty vehicles and a 44% reduction for medium-duty vehicles, the agency said in a statement.

Can California pull off the epic transition to EVs? Read our coverage here

California has ambitious climate goals, including a pledge to ban the sale of new gasoline- and diesel-powered cars and light trucks by 2035.

Feb. 15, 2024

The rules are also expected to reduce health-damaging soot emissions from gas cars by more than 95% — a move that could improve air quality in cities like Los Angeles where many homes are near freeways.

In many ways, the federal rule follows the lead of California, which has been a pioneer in efforts to eliminate reliance on gas-powered cars. In 2022, regulators announced they would halt the sale of new gas cars in the state by 2035.

Twelve states and Washington, D.C., have chosen to adhere to California’s more stringent rules. Along with California, the group accounts for roughly 33% of the nation’s new car registrations, according to state officials.

American Lung Assn. President and Chief Executive Harold Wimmer applauded the Biden administration’s move as a “critical step to address climate change and reduce air pollution.” Still, Wimmer said, the EPA has more work to do to reduce emissions, particularly from heavy-duty vehicles including freight trucks and buses.

When soot, or fine particulate matter, is inhaled, the microscopic pollution not only aggravates the lungs and raises the risk of respiratory disease, but it also can travel into the bloodstream, where it can trigger stroke or heart attack.

“Trucks represent a small fraction of total on-road vehicles but generate the greatest share of harmful air pollutants,” Wimmer said. “Reducing emissions from both cars and trucks is critical to improving public health, advancing health equity and addressing climate change.”

The EPA rule does not ban vehicles with internal-combustion engines. While the rule is expected to increase electric vehicle sales nationally, car manufacturers have autonomy in deciding how to meet the reduced emission standards. They could achieve the standards by selling more hybrid cars or improving the efficiency of gas-powered engines.

The final rule also gives car manufacturers more time to phase in pollution limits than the EPA had proposed last year. Under that more ambitious plan, electric vehicles would have accounted for 67% of all new passenger cars sold in the U.S. by 2032.

John Bozzella, president and CEO of the auto manufacturing trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation, said that while automakers are committed to transitioning to electric vehicles, the pace at which it happens is crucial for those companies.

“Moderating the pace of EV adoption in 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 was the right call because it prioritizes more reasonable electrification targets in the next few very critical years of the EV transition,” Bozzella said. “These adjusted EV targets — still a stretch goal — should give the market and supply chains a chance to catch up. It buys some time for more public charging to come online, and the industrial incentives and policies of the Inflation Reduction Act to do their thing.”

News of the EPA rule comes on the heels of an agreement between the California Air Resources Board and vehicle manufacturing giant Stellantis. Under the agreement, the company is to abide by state requirements that zero-emission vehicles account for a growing share of sales in California through 2030, even if the policy is challenged in the courts or by federal action.

PALM SPRINGS , CA - JANUARY 19: Ralph Megna (cq), of Landers, owner of a 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, is upset about the sad state of public charging, at a Electrify America charging station on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024 in Palm Springs , CA. The State of California has spent more than a billion dollars on a public charging system that is unreliable, and so instead of encouraging EV ownership, works against it. Broken chargers, lax oversight: How California’s troubled EV charging stations threaten emission goals

Why are so many California EV charging stations broken? Lax state oversight of state subsidies is one big reason.

Jan. 24, 2024

Zero-emission cars represent about 7.6% of vehicles sold today in the United States, up from nearly 6% in 2022 and just over 3% in 2021. They remain the fastest-growing car sales category, according to Kelley Blue Book.

In California, electric vehicle sales dropped significantly in the last half of 2023 for the first time in more than a decade, a phenomenon experts attributed in part to unreliable charging technology, higher prices for zero-emission vehicles and concerns about vehicle range. Still, California has more electric cars on its roads than any other state, with electric vehicles making up 20.1% of its new car sales.

Electric vehicle sales growth also has slowed nationally as automakers such as Ford and General Motors have cut back for the moment on EV and battery production plans.

Hertz is also pulling back on its plan to shift toward EVs. The rental car company had announced plans several years ago to buy 100,000 Teslas, but in January said it was selling its EV fleet, citing higher expenses for collisions and damage involving the vehicles.

The National Automobile Dealers Assn., which represents more than 16,000 car and truck dealerships, was among the automotive trade organizations that expressed concern over the federal requirements. The new targets, they say, don’t reflect the demand for electric vehicles.

“The EPA’s final rule remains too aggressive and far ahead of consumer demand,” Mike Stanton, the association’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Our experience working with consumers every day makes us highly skeptical that consumers will adopt EVs anywhere near the levels required. The charging infrastructure is not ready, the current incentives are not sufficient, and high EV prices will price out millions of consumers, particularly low-income Americans, from the new-car market.”

But environmental activists say the EPA’s move is necessary to combat climate change. Amanda Leland, executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Environmental Defense Fund, said at a news conference that the EPA rule will cut air pollution and bring more choices and savings to consumers.

“The future is electric,” she said, “built on a shared pollution-free vision grounded in economic prosperity, job growth and consumer savings. So today we continue on our journey for a better, healthier world.”

Due to its historic air pollution woes, California is the only state that can adopt its own vehicle emissions standards, with federal approval.

Last year, state air regulators adopted a rule to eventually phase out heavy-duty trucks and locomotives that burn fossil fuels. But the EPA has yet to sign off on the rule, delaying its implementation.

Set to start this January, the rule was to prohibit the registration of new gas- and diesel-fired cargo trucks that operate at California ports and rail yards. That would have effectively ensured that all new heavy-duty vehicles taking part in the state’s bustling movement of goods would be zero-emission vehicles.
