Proposed as a stately, contemporary “classic ”, the Commodore 57 (180 feet) aim to achieve the robust charm of timeless seagoing vessels, without the compromises of vintage builds. The flowing, airy spaces aboard, combined with unique features and systems, will help ensure a truly capable yacht. Amenities include an enclosed 10.4m expedition tender, 8.5m sport RIB, eco-friendly hybrid power, 5 staterooms, beach club, sauna, masseuse suite, elevator, pool and hot tub, dive centre, flared bow giving on-deck safety for passengers and crew of 12.
The Commodore and his Blackthorn The name of the concept highlights the extreme practicality of this yacht. A Commodore, being a senior naval commander, knows what works, and what makes sense. Such an experienced man would order a purposeful, no-nonsense yacht like this. “ Aside from a good bed and a creative chef, the most important tool aboard for any vacation is a capable, big tender ” designer Richard Liebowitz says. That’s why the Commodore 57 includes a 34 ft enclosed expedition tender , a fantastic machine with which to explore.
Being the perfect companion to the mother ship, this 10.4 metre craft has been called Blackthorn , after the stick a Commodore traditionally carries.
LP Design’s proven expertise
Liebowitz & Partners has already proven their expertise in explorer yacht, having designed the 55m ice-class expedition yacht STEEL, launched in 2009 by Pendennis. The Commodore 57 and the 55m Steel are both classically timeless, functional and robust ships that can faithfully and safely accommodate family and guests around the world in all conditions.
With regard to the external envelope, this vessel denotes enduring aesthetics and proven maritime forms that ensure comfort both underway and at anchor. The flared, wave-breaking bow provides safety on-deck, while the heart-shaped stern guarantee a smooth ride also in following seas conditions. The combination of easy-going hullform, large yacht tenders, versatile deck spaces, effective crew circulation, and logical service layout, make the Commodore an effective leisure machine .
Trasformability of the exterior spaces
The exterior has a wide range of spaces that will appeal to both large and more intimate groups. This explorer has a logical layout and many functional elements, arranged artfully. One of her hallmarks is the transformability of some areas , such as the Aft Deck and the Sky Lounge.
The bow deck hosts one of the two spa pools aboard , a raised seating group positioned ahead of the foremast and a 5.5 meter rescue tender that can be launched in seconds using a pre-programmed robotic crane. From there, the access stairs bring the guest to the Coachroof Lounge. A walk-around porgies observation bridge connects this lounge area to the control bridge.
The second pool lies at the heart of the leisure operation : the deck lounge. The entire owner’s party can get comfortable on this deck with pool, shaded drink bar, various sun loungers, and great views. The 4.7 meter long saltwater heated pool is a prelude to sunbathing one deck up, in the Sky Lounge. The beach club area is one deck below, and it includes a sauna ( a circular steam Banya ) as well as a treatment and massage suite . A unique clamshell stern door gives access to a teak wood swim platform. A second, bottom-hinger beach platform emerges from the port side.
Home-like interior with dual-use spaces
Liebowitz & Partners has unveiled two proposals for the interior of the Commodore 57: light colors are the essence of the first concept, while the second is based on a darker palette. Both solutions are ready to be customized to the owner’s requested style. LP Design blends rigorous architectural order with engaging vignettes, varies finishes, appropriate detailing, and insightful lighting.
The interior is detailed not as a home, but purposefully and discretely fitted out as a sea-going ship. The owner’s personalization is essential for creating a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere: ideally the client would provide personal objects, which LP Design would sensitively integrate into the décor, to make the yacht more of their home. The interior of Commodore, like the exterior, features multi-uses spaces : the arrival lobby serves as a drinks bar, and the skylounge serves as a day lounge, reading room, formal banquet hall, or business meeting center.
Commodore 57 Specifications
Lenght: 57.0 metre / 187 feet Beam: 9.90 metre / 32.5 feet Draft: 3.15 metre / 10.3 feet average Displacement: 800 ton estimated Top speed: 16 knots Hull material: Mild steel Superstructure: Aluminum Stabilisation: Under-way and at-anchor four-fin system Power: Hybrid diesel/electric w/IMO Tier III clean emissions system
The award-winning studio Liebowitz & Partners aims to offer creativity, clarity, practiality, and appropriate inventiveness to the client’s project. The owner’s Project Brief is the guideline, which LP Design advance step-by-step, with client approvals, toward increasing specificity and commitment to the build specification.
As a private studio, Liebowitz & Partners operate with a firm confidentiality ethos, ensuring staff and suppliers assure client privacy.
At the core of LP Design lies the belief that each functional element should work to reinforce the underlying concept.

LP Design UK
Company Description
As design architects, we creatively seek to solve the brief posed by the client. Since 1991 our clients have consistently put forth daring projects, confident in our thoroughness and distinctive style. Whether projects are ‘ sheet of paper’ configurations or subtle refinements to existing vessels, our attention to detail ensures a successful outcome that is rewarding for all those involved. One of our projects included a brief for a new build superyacht requiring low bridge clearance. The solution required an elemental architectural rethink, along with an insightful development process. Other projects call for relatively minor aesthetic and functional updates to older vessels, using economical or cosmetic techniques. For LP DESIGN UK, the creation of a large yacht, motor or sail, is akin to making a film: while there are hundreds of people and companies involved in the production, the core vision is set by a few people. Among myriad details and alterations, preserving the purity of that vision is the challenge for both film makers and yacht makers. For example, motoryachts need engines as well as radar masts, and while the engine won’ affect the aesthetics of the vessel its placement will impact the internal space. “ the many project responsibilities, perhaps the most important test in a project is simply how a room ‘’. Many ‘’ spaces look spectacular, but for some reason are unappealing to spend time in. Why? Because the ‘’, as I call them, were not correctly addressed. These are elements that don’ appear on floor plans.” — Liebowitz

Personality
Q: How did you become a superyacht designer and what or who inspired you into the industry? Drawn to both science and art, I studied chemistry and art history at university, the latter introducing me to architecture. One assignment required me to draw a local building of my choice the task was simple, joyful, and even a revelation to me. I decided to transfer to an accredited architectural university.
The design degree led to my professional licensing in New York and employment with signature firms, most significantly with Der Scutt, designer of Trump Tower. However, I soon sought a more artistic expression in the sculptural forms of boats. Having grown up on boats, and drawing them as a child, the transition to marine was natural for me.
Q: Of the projects you’ worked on, which was your most challenging and why? The most challenging project is more of an ever-present theme in most of our motoryacht projects, so I think it’ worth addressing: this is the conflict between generous internal volume versus sleek exterior lines. Understandably, most owners want grander living spaces, but they also desire a vessel that looks elegant, so one must compromise. Today’ motoryachts have astonishing volume compared to a generation ago, but today’ luxury living and technical requirements are more sophisticated. As such, the designers, along with the client, need to understand the spacial trade-offs and aesthetic costs in the general arrangement and the profile.
Q: How do you go about understanding a client and their wishes for a project? Every client has differing requirements, priorities and manner of communicating. Furthermore, the client will often have others with whom they are sharing project decisions, so we need to understand the above, and ideally become personally close. Clarity and detail in the brief or wish list at the start of a project is crucial: it’ very difficult to add things later, but if all the puzzle pieces are there at the beginning, they can fit together. As such, we encourage a lengthy and informed brief.

A question of approach
The men and women of VPLP Design all share the same passion for the sea and the wind.
We innovate every day to design boats that are better, faster, safer, soberer, more comfortable and more efficient.
We listen and we discuss – a lot, channelling our experience and creativity so that we always exceed the expectations of the specifications or a need expressed.
Our job is to always go one step further and turn into reality the dreams and ambitions of mariners. Our overriding concern: the sustainability of our projects.
© VPLP Design
All elegant, all different
For us, an elegant boat is the faithful synthesis of our customers’ wishes, and their satisfaction is the goal to which we strive. At VPLP Design we are convinced that a successful boat is often the result of a remarkable human adventure.
We are passionate about performance, in the widest sense of the word. Performance is, of course, about speed but it’s also about energy-efficient propulsion.
Designing “zero emission” boats is the fruit of all our skills combined. When it comes to ensuring continuous innovation, our default position is clear: curiosity.
© Gilles Martin-Raget
Cross-functionality leads to innovation
Designing boats requires a multi-skilled team which leverages the talents of naval architects, engineers and designers. This allows us to deal with every aspect of the design process, while assuring the quality of our projects.
VPLP Design operates in three distinct areas, through a Racing Division, Yachting Division and Maritime Division. Each division operates under the responsibility of a coordinator, although the entire team works cross-functionally on the firm’s projects.
The continual transfer of our skills between divisions is the key to our ability to innovate with creativity, diligence, rigour and humility. We are always attentive and respectful listeners.
