That quality and consistency helps sum up what Manchester City stand for and ensures the club will continue to strive for success going forward. "

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan’s luxury yacht was docked in Turkey on Thursday.

And according to an Anadolu Agency report, it was refuelled during it’s time spent at the Marmaris Port at a cost of around £380,000!

Mansour’s 149-metre long yacht, Topaz, is thought to be worth around £342 million and is one of the top 10 most expensive in the world.

It takes 730,000 litres of fuel to fill up Topaz – a process which takes around five hours to complete.

The yacht originally tried to stop at the Marmaris marina – but it was too large and had to be redirected to the Marmaris Port.

There are 50 staff on board, six luxury suites, a heliport and numerous swimming pools and meeting halls.

Anyone concerned his money may dry up should probably think again.

Art gallery employee with Salvator Mundi

Leonardo masterpiece 'being kept on Saudi prince's yacht'

Report of Salvator Mundi’s whereabouts confirms trend for great artworks to be displayed aboard billionaires’ superyachts

The world’s most expensive artwork – Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Salvator Mundi – has reportedly been installed on Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman’s superyacht.

The location of the painting has been a mystery since it was sold for a record $450m (£350m) at auction by Christie’s in New York in 2017. On Monday, Artnet, an art industry news service, reported that the 500-year-old painting was being kept on Prince Mohammed’s €500m (£440m) 134m yacht, Serene.

Artnet said “two principals involved in the transaction” had told its reporter that “the work was whisked away in the middle of the night on MBS’s plane and relocated to his yacht, the Serene”.

The Salvator Mundi (Latin for Saviour of the World), which has been at the centre of a storm of controversy over suggestions that it was painted by one of Leonardo’s assistants and not the man himself, had been due to go on display at a Middle East outpost of Paris’s Louvre gallery last September.

“Having spent so long undiscovered, this masterpiece is now our gift to the world,” Mohamed Khalifa al-Mubarak, the chairman of Abu Dhabi’s department of culture and tourism, said in June 2018 . “We look forward to welcoming people from near and far to witness its beauty.”

However, just week’s before the scheduled unveiling on 18 September, the opening was postponed and has not been rescheduled.

The Saudi embassies in London and Washington did not respond to requests for comment on the painting’s whereabouts. A spokeswoman for Christie’s did not comment on the location of the painting or its provenance.

Earlier this month, one of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo criticised Christie’s for wrongly suggesting in its cataloguing of the Salvator Mundi that she was among scholars who had attributed the picture to the Renaissance master. Dr Carmen Bambach, a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, told the Guardian: “That is not representative of my opinion.”

Mohammad bin Salman

The identity of the buyer remained a secret following the auction until the New York Times disclosed that that it had been bought by a little-known member of the Saudi royal family, Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud. He is a close friend of Prince Mohammed and after the auction was named the country’s first minister of culture.

MarineTraffic, an app that tracks vessels including superyachts, shows that Serene is currently at Port Said, an Egyptian city where the the Suez Canal meets the Mediterranean Sea.

The Guardian has previously reported on the growing trend for billionaires installing world-renowned masterpieces on their superyachts . Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the owner of Manchester City and deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, has several hundred pieces aboard his £350m superyacht, Topaz.

A reporter looking in the windows of Joe Lewis’s £200m superyacht, Aviva , when it moored on the Thames last year, discovered that Francis Bacon’s Triptych 1974–1977 was hanging in gold frames on the lower deck. The painting, whose subject is the death of Bacon’s lover George Dyer, was included in Tate Britain’s blockbuster Bacon and Freud exhibition last summer.

The British-born Lewis, who has an estimated £3.9bn fortune, owns a majority stake in Tottenham football club and lives in the tax-friendly Bahamas, has what he describes as “one of the largest private art collections in the world”. It includes paintings by Degas, Freud, Klimt, Modigliani, Matisse and Picasso, and sculptures by Moore, Degas and Di Modica. It is not known which are kept on his yacht.

Manchester City football club owner fined

Megayacht 'Topaz' in Palma.

Megayacht 'Topaz' in Palma. archive photo. | Gabriel Alomar

A billionaire who owns Manchester City and several other football clubs has been fined 147,000 euros for not paying VAT on the diesel for his megayacht.

The 147 metre long ‘Topaz’ is one of the most luxurious yachts in the world and is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan , Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Minister of Presidential Affairs and a member of the royal family in Abu Dhabi.

In 2013, the ’Topaz ’ sailed to Palma via Andalusia, Barcelona and refuelled along the way. The captain argued that they were sailing for commercial purposes in order to take advantage of the tax exemption for merchant ships and fishing vessels , which does not apply to recreational boats.

The attempted fraud was discovered by Palma Customs who filed a complaint and ordered Oceanus Maritime Limited , which is based in the Isle of Man and owned by Sheikh Mansour, to pay the VAT.

Sheikh Mansour then filed an appeal arguing that part of the trip was a trade mission to export goods to New York and Egypt , but the appeal was thrown out by the court which said the main activity of the ‘Topaz’ is to be a pleasure boat.

" The exemption will not apply to ships intended for sport, leisure or private use,” said the judge.

Defence lawyers then claimed a conflict of jurisdiction because the vessel had refuelled in Andalusia and Barcelona, but not in the Balearic Islands. That was also dismissed by the judge who pointed out that VAT is a state tax, therefore people can be prosecuted without distinction of Autonomous Community.

The Defence also argued that they shouldn’t have to pay the tax because the company is based outside the European Union and there are no employees of Sheik Mansour in Spain, but that was also rejected.

"That there is no representative in Spanish territory cannot prevent the administrative reaction in a case like this," said the judge.

However the fact that there are no employees of Sheikh Mansour in Spain does prevent him from offsetting the VAT with other invoices incurred, so he will eventually have to pay the taxes in Spain.

A powerful sheikh calls the shots at one of the world's hottest stock markets, the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, which is now nearing nearly $1 trillion in value.

As of March 2024, the ADX is ranked 17th in the world, ahead of Spain and Brazil. But it is all about Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan. One of Abu Dhabi's two deputy rulers, national security adviser of the UAE and brother to its president, Tahnoon has his fingers in almost every pie of its business.  ,  Tahnoon's firms had a weighting of at least 65% of the benchmark FTSE ADX General Index as of March 31.

The conglomerate is valued at almost $240 billion.

IHC also makes money from trading on the very exchange where it's listed. It owns the Abu Dhabi stock exchange's most active broker.

The emirate's ADQ fund, which Sheikh Tahnoon chairs, oversees the exchange itself.

Tahnoon, the de facto business chief of Abu Dhabi's ruling Al Nahyan family, helms two of Abu Dhabi's biggest wealth funds, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and ADQ, and also chairs First Abu Dhabi Bank, the UAE's biggest lender by assets.

"The interlinkages of assets and the concentration of control in Sheikh Tahnoon's hands, despite being neither ruler nor crown prince, are unusual even by Gulf standards," Steffen Hertog, an associate professor at the London School of Economics, told Bloomberg.

Despite owning over 10 companies on the exchange, IHC’s stock market forays simply issue a price on the bourse, and don’t use external banks as advisers. It also has a small free float. Since 2020, through the end of March, the total value of companies listed on UAE exchanges has nearly quadrupled, to $950 billion. (Saudi Arabia's market, at $3 trillion, remains the region's largest.) Abu Dhabi's benchmark index accounts for $711 billion. The rest is Dubai. Five of the 10 best-performing IPOs in the UAE since the start of 2021 have come from companies in his empire or controlled by the sovereign wealth funds he oversees.

Ryan Bohl, of consulting firm Rane Network, told Bloomberg investors in the UAE may contend with less than clearly articulated policies. But the fact that so much relies on one royal provides one kind of clarity, he says: "The dirham, so to speak, stops with [Sheikh] Tahnoon."

UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan buys £65 million Chelsea mansion

S heikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi , has reportedly purchased one of the most expensive homes in London.

A mansion built on the site of the BT Earls Court telephone exchange was bought in November by a company with ties to the UAE president, reports Bloomberg .

The Chelsea house sold for £65 million, making it one of a handful of London’s most expensive homes that changed hands last year. The most expensive, a £138 million Mayfair mansion, was bought by Indian  billionaire  and vaccine fortune heir Adar Poonawalla .

London saw 52 homes sold above the $10 million mark (£7.9 million) in Q4 of 2023, according to the Knight Frank Super-Prime Intelligence report, tying with New York for second place after Dubai. London’s super prime market is predicted to rise again in 2024, after bottoming out at the end of 2023 .

The UAE President’s new purchase is one of a development of three identical mansions built between 2004 and 2006 in SW10.

One of the brick villas sold for £51 million in 2015 to a Bermuda-registered company called Mount Ltd.

The house, which featured nine bedrooms, a glass lift, and a basement with a swimming pool and cinema, was one of the most expensive new build homes ever sold in London.Developers Stephen West, Paul Daniel and Giles Mackay bought the old telephone exchange site for £13 million in 2001.

Mackay went on to live in one of the three houses, although a dispute between the multimillionaire and contractors Walter Lilly & Co ended in the high court, with the judge ruling in favour of the builders.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, known as MBZ, was officially elected president of the UAE in 2022 after the death of his brother, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

MBZ is part of the Al Nahyan royal family, one of the world’s wealthiest monarchies, which is believed to own billions of pounds worth of property in London.

In 2014, Abu Dhabi’s ruling family was estimated to be the second largest landowner in Mayfair after the Duke of Westminster.

His late brother is understood to have amassed a portfolio of £1.2 billion of property in the capital.

An Abu Dhabi-backed fund, majority-owned by MBZ’s brother and vice-president of the UAE Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is currently involved in a deal to take over the Telegraph Media Group . The UAE vice-president is also the owner of Manchester City Football Club.

Last month the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund was reportedly considering buying a stake in London’s Heathrow airport .
