Video captures 130-foot superyacht sinking off southern coast of Italy

A superyacht sank off the southern coast of Italy over the weekend of Aug. 20 in a spectacular capsizing captured on video and shared on Twitter by the Italian coast guard.

The video compilation shows the My Saga , a roughly 130-foot boat, struggling against the waves before slowly sinking into the water.

The yacht was sailing from the town of Gallipoli to Milazzo, Sicily, on Aug. 20, local news outlets reported, when it began to take on water and eventually sank some hours later about nine nautical miles off the port of Catanzaro.

All crew members and passengers were rescued and uninjured, the coast guard said on Twitter. It said it launched an investigation to determine what happened.

Nei giorni scorsi, la #GuardiaCostiera di #Crotone ha coordinato operazioni di salvataggio di passeggeri ed equipaggio di uno yacht di 40m, affondato a 9 miglia al largo di #CatanzaroMarina . The My Saga first reported a problem on Aug. 20 after setting sail from Gallipoli , on Italy’s southeastern peninsula, according to the country’s National Associated Press Agency (ANSA). Patrol boats from the Italian coast guard in Crotone and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) were dispatched to the scene.

They found the ship taking on water from its stern. Five people — four passengers and a member of the crew — were initially rescued on a Romanian patrol boat acting on behalf of Frontex. They were then transferred to the coast guard boat and taken to Catanzaro.

According to an Italian official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details of an ongoing investigation, the My Saga flew a Cayman Islands flag and was owned by a Danish company. The group on board when the boat took on water included six Italian nationals, two Danish citizens and a South African national, the person said.

The owner contracted a towing company to attempt to rescue the ship, according to the official. A tugboat, the Alessandro Second, arrived and took the four remaining crew members — including the captain — onboard before beginning to tow the ship toward Crotone. But bad weather made the process difficult, as did the position of the yacht, which was tilted into the water.

Eventually, the tugboat abandoned the yacht, and it sank into the Gulf of Squillace. The coast guard took the remaining crew members to Catanzaro.

It’s not the first time a sinking yacht has captured attention on the internet. In May, rapper Cardi B posted footage on social media of a yacht sinking near her hotel while she was on vacation in an unknown location. The artist could be heard screaming as she asked whether there wasn’t a “big boat that could save it.” Eventually, she said “bye-bye” as it disappeared into the water. She later clarified that no one was onboard .

I can’t believe I’m actually watching a yacht sink pic.twitter.com/dLL3ZJJv9R — Cardi B (@iamcardib) May 28, 2022

The same month, passersby watched as another multimillion-dollar yacht, the Rendezvous, sank in Torquay Harbor, a marina in southwestern England, after a fire broke out onboard. Authorities warned of potential air and water pollution because the yacht carried about nine metric tons of diesel.

And earlier this month, the 145-foot Aria SF caught fire off the Balearic island of Formentera in Spain in an incident that was also captured on camera and shared widely on social media. Those onboard were evacuated, and no one was hurt, the Guardian reported . The roughly $23 million yacht had reportedly just been delivered to its owner.

Chico Harlan contributed to this report.

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a 40-metre superyacht sank into the Mediterranean sea after being battered in a storm.

The 40-metre-long luxury vessel was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo overnight on Saturday when it got into trouble around 15km from Italy’s Catanzaro Marina.

Footage shows the yacht, named My Saga, rapidly disappearing beneath waves, as lifeboats appear to float beside it.

The captain sent out a distress call to the Port Authority of Crotone, with officials told the yacht was taking on a significant amount of water from the stern.

The Italian coastguard dispatched two patrol vessels and rescued all four passengers and five crew members on board.

A tugboat sent out at dawn was unable to save the superyacht from sinking because of worsening weather conditions, the Super Yacht Times reports. The Saga finally sank at around 1pm on Sunday.

The outlet reports the yacht, which was built in Monaco back in 2007, was flying under the Cayman Islands flag with an all-Italian crew when it sunk.

An investigation has been launched into the cause.

The yacht named My Saga sank on Saturday

It comes after a £6 million superyacht sunk after it went up in flames in the UK on the Torquay harbourside.

The 85ft vessel was consumed by fire , with thick black smoking billowing into the sky.

The yacht reportedly drifted out into the harbour after the fire burnt through ropes securing it to the pier, but the vessel was later secured by the fire service.

A fire service statement revealed that the vessel contained approximately 8000 litres of diesel fuel.

Video shows 40-metre superyacht sinking off Italy's Catanzaro coast

'my saga' sank on saturday while sailing from gallipoli to milazzo, italian local media reported, yacht sinks off the coast of italy.

Yacht sinks off the coast of Italy

A 40-metre yacht has sunk in the Mediterranean Sea after running into trouble about nine nautical miles (17 kilometres) off the coast of Catanzaro in Italy.

The My Saga , flying the flag of the Cayman Islands and with an Italian crew, sank at about 1pm on Saturday while sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo, according to Italian media reports.

The Italian coastguard rescued nine people on board — four passengers and five crew — over two days, the report said.

The Crotone Port operations room received a report late on Friday that a vessel was taking on water, according to news outlet Catanzaro Informa .

A Romanian vessel patrolling on behalf of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency was sent to the site, along with another patrol boat.

The first four passengers and a crew member were rescued by the Romanian boat on Friday. The other four crew members, including the captain, were rescued at dawn on Saturday, the report said.

Difficult weather on Saturday and the yacht leaning on its starboard side made it too dangerous to bring in a tugboat to beach the vessel, which sank quickly afterwards.

The crew who were on board the tugboat were transferred to the coastguard patrol boat to be taken to Catanzaro Marina port.

An inquiry is to be launched to establish the cause of the sinking.

The My Saga was built in Italy in 2007 as Yuko , according to Super Yacht Times .

The moment a 140ft superyacht sunk off the coast off Italy was captured on camera after the huge ship was hit by a storm.

Listen to this article

According to the Super Yacht Times , the vessel called My Saga was travelling from Gallipoli in Turkey to Milazzo in Italy and was spotted flying a Cayman Islands flag.

Four passengers and five crew were rescued before the ship submerged into the sea and no injuries were reported.

The Italian coast guard said in a tweet: "In recent days, the Guardia Costiera of Crotone coordinated the rescue operations of passengers and crew of a 40m yacht, which sank 9 miles offshore of Catanzaro Marina."

They added: "Administrative investigation launched to identify the causes."

According to reports, the captain sent out a distress call late at night during a storm because the ship was taking on a significant amount of water.

The superyacht, which was built in 2007, has room for up to 12 guests on board alongside accommodation for 7 crew members including the captain.

It comes after a British man died and six other people were injured when a luxury yacht smashed into rocks in Sardinia three weeks ago.

The 63-year-old, who has not been named but is understood to be the owner of the 70ft Magnum-type motor yacht involved in the crash, was killed in the accident around 8.40pm yesterday near Porto Cervo, in Sardinia.

It is thought the vessel - carrying a total of seven people - was swerving to avoid another boat near a group of islands known as Il Nibani that lie just off the coast when it hit the rocks and half-sunk, La Stampa reports.

Local reports said rough weather conditions made a tug-boat salvage of the yacht impossible.

But authorities are still trying to figure out exactly how it all went down.

A Superyacht Sank Off the Italian Coast and More Yachting News

By Katherine McLaughlin

A beach of the Gulf of Squillace

When you think about a boat sinking, you likely picture Jack and Rose in the ocean while the Titanic plummets behind them. But if you were on the coast near Catanzaro, Italy, this past weekend, then you’re talking to your friends and family about the ocean swallowing a 130-foot superyacht.

My Saga, as the yacht was called, sank on August 20th about nine nautical miles away from the Catanzaro Marina. In a video captured by the Italian coast guard , the boat appears to struggle against the waves before the image cuts to the vessel vertically sinking into the water stern first. In the tweet about the incident, the coast guard confirmed that it had been on-scene, and all passengers ad crew were successfully rescued.

According to The Washington Post , a towing company tried to save My Saga, but its efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful. The Italian coast guard launched an investigation to determine the point of failure, though it is unclear at this point what happened. The superyacht was designed by Tim Heywood , who was also responsible for the naval architecture. Jean-Marc Achy was responsible for the vessel’s interior.

In other superyacht news, one lucky bidder just got a $75-million boat for a fraction of the cost. Axioma —a 236-foot multi-story yacht with an on-board swimming pool, 3D cinema room, spa, and gym—went to auction in Gibraltar this past week. The boat was seized in March from Russian oligarch and steel tycoon Dmitry Pumpyansky following sanctions from the US, EU, and UK.

As The Guardian reported, the ship’s auction attracted 63 bidders, and it is the first sale of an oligarch’s assets since Putin invaded Ukraine. Though details of the winning bid have yet to be released, James Jaffa—a lawyer who specializes in yachts—told the publication he expects it to go for below $20 million. The auction has stirred controversy from many as the money from the sale won’t go toward helping Ukraine, but rather to JP Morgan , who funded a $20-million loan to Pumpyansky that has yet to be repaid.

More than 80 migrants feared dead in double boat disaster in Mediterranean

M ore than 80 migrants are feared to have died in the Mediterranean in twin tragedies as they tried to reach the shores of Italy and Greece.

Turkish officials said on Friday that 22 migrants, including at least five children, drowned after their boat capsized off Turkey’s largest island, Gokceada , which is also known as Imbros.

The migrants’ nationalities were not clear, but in recent years tens of thousands of Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans have crossed the Aegean in boats organised by smugglers.

“The Turkish coastguard found the bodies of 22 people,” the local governor’s office said in a statement.

There has been a rise in the number of migrants and refugees trying to cross the Aegean in recent weeks.

In the second incident, around 60 people who tried to cross by boat from Libya to Italy were reported to have died of hunger and thirst. The motor on their boat broke down and they drifted at sea for more than a week. The fatalities included women and at least one child, according to survivors.

Around 25 survivors from Mali, Senegal and Gambia were found on a deflating rubber dinghy in the middle of the Mediterranean. The dinghy was spotted by the Ocean Viking, a rescue ship belonging to the humanitarian organisation SOS Méditerranée . “These people saw many of their dear ones die,” one of the rescuers, identified only as Massimo, said in a video released by the NGO.

Two of the migrants were unconscious and had to evacuated by Italian military helicopter to Sicily.

The other 23 were dehydrated, traumatised and had burns from fuel on board the boat.

Since the start of the year, at least 226 migrants are estimated to have died on the dangerous central Mediterranean route between North Africa and Italy.

So far this year, more than 31,000 irregular migrants have reached the EU, according to the bloc’s border agency, Frontex. The top three nationalities were Malians, Syrians and Afghans.

That is similar to the number who arrived in the same period last year.

In Italy, the conservative government of prime minister Giorgia Meloni has vowed to crack down on the arrivals, so far without much success. Last year, 156,000 asylum seekers reached Italy, a 50 per cent increase on the year before.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A rubber dinghy carrying migrants sank off Turkey’s northern Aegean coast on Friday, killing at least 22 people, officials said.

Turkish coast guard personnel rescued two migrants from the sea off the town of Eceabat in Canakkale province, while two others reached the shore by themselves and notified officials, Gov. Ilhami Aktas said.

It was not clear how many people were on the boat when it sank and the coast guard was continuing to search the area, he said.

Aktas told the state-run Anadolu Agency that seven of the dead were infants or children.

The migrants’ nationalities were not immediately known.

They were trying to reach the Greek island of Samothraki, the private Demiroren News Agency reported.

Eighteen rescue boats, a plane, two helicopters and a drone were involved in the search and rescue mission, the statement said. Ambulances were on standby at a nearby port, Anadolu reported.

Although their numbers have declined in recent years, migrants mostly from the Middle East and Africa often leave Turkey to try to reach Greece or Italy in search of a better life in European countries.

The Turkish coast guard said it caught at least 93 migrants attempting to leave the Turkish coast on boats this week.

Ten Shipwrecks Found Off the Coast of Greek Island

The sunken vessels range in age from 3,000 B.C.E to the 1940s

Underwater divers holding large anchor

Using Homer’s Iliad and other historical texts as their guide, researchers have identified ten shipwrecks off the coast of Kasos , a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea.

Through the Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project , an interdisciplinary team of researchers spent four years exploring the waters around the island at depths of roughly 65 to 154 feet. The group finished its field work in October, and the Greek Ministry of Culture announced the findings last week.

The discoveries offer new information and archaeological data on the history of Kasos, as well as the rich cultural heritage of the Mediterranean, according to the statement.

“This island has long been overlooked in historical narratives, and we aimed to uncover its significance in ancient maritime networks,” Xanthie Argiris , a marine archaeologist involved with the project, tells Newsweek ’s Aristos Georgiou.

The ten shipwrecks vary greatly in age: The oldest dates to around 3000 B.C.E., while the youngest—a wooden boat with metal elements that measure between 82 and 98 feet long—likely sank during World War II.

The team also found ships and artifacts spanning classical antiquity (from around the year 460 B.C.E), the Byzantine era (from 800 to 900 C.E.), and the medieval and Ottoman periods.

The wide timeline represented by the ships reflects the significance of Kasos as a “maritime crossroads throughout the ages,” Argiris tells Newsweek .

Some of the ships were carrying goods from as far away as Spain, Italy, Africa and Asia, the researchers report. The items include a Spanish amphora that dates to between 150 and 170 C.E., as well as drinking vessels and flasks from Africa that date to the Roman period. The researchers also found a stone anchor from the Archaic Period , which lasted from roughly 700 to 500 B.C.E.

Beginning in 2019, the team carried out four separate research missions around the island, which spans 19 square miles. It’s the southernmost island in the Dodecanese complex in the southeastern Aegean and served as a major trade hub for centuries. According to the Iliad , Homer’s epic eighth century B.C.E. poem, Kasos sent ships to fight in the Trojan War , writes Artnet ’s Vittoria Benzine.

The researchers took more than 20,000 underwater photographs, brought sunken artifacts to the surface and made maps of the Kasos-Karpathos reef using side-scanning sonar.

The project is the focus of an 11-minute documentary film called Diving i n the History of the Aegean , available in both Greek and English, that is being shown at international archaeological film festivals.

Next, the team will explore the waters surrounding the neighboring island of Karpathos.
