The Evolution of the C&C 27 Cruiser-Racer

C&C Yachts produced four versions-and nearly 1,000 hulls-of its popular C&C 27 boat. Called the C&C 27 Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, and Mark IV, these boats differed in various ways, but the hulls were similar. A fifth design, the C&C 27 Mark V, was a totally different design. Heres a look at the various editions of the C&C 27, and how they differed from one another.

Mark I: Production ran from 1970 to 1972; hull numbers 1 through 167. Shorter hull and shortest rigs, with single upper and single lower shrouds. Mainsail traveller mounted aft in cockpit. Standard equipped with tiller steering and Atomic 4 gas engine.

Mark II: Production ran from 1972 to 1974; hull numbers 168 through 451. Same hull and sail area as the Mark I. High-aspect rig was two feet taller than Mark I. Rigged with one upper and two lower shrouds. Same aft traveller, Atomic 4 engine, and tiller steering as Mark I.

Mark III: Production ran from 1974 to 1981; hull numbers 452 through 914. Hull similar to previous editions but six inches in length were added to cockpit/stern area. Traveller was moved forward to bridgedeck mount, and wheel steering became an option in 1975; diesel power became option in 1978 (Yanmar). Draft and sail area increased; ballast decreased; displacement remained same as previous marks. Rudder redesigned with higher aspect shape. Small interior changes made but basic layout the same as marks I and II.

Mark IV: Production ran from 1981 to 1982; hull numbers 915 through 979. Most changes in Mark IV were cosmetic; teak interior replaced with off-white melamine, trimmed with teak and dark-anodized aluminum. Forestay moved aft about seven inched to make way for a bow roller. Auxiliary power option upgraded to two-cylindar Yanmar.

Mark V: Production ran from 1984 to 1986; hull numbers 1 to 169 (Niagara-On-The-Lake plant) and 500 to 610 (Rhode Island plant). The Mark V is a completely different boat than the other 27s; it is not considered part of the evolution of those previous designs. Geared more toward racing sailors, the Mark V was designed to meet the Midget Ocean Racing Club (MORC) rule.

First built in 1970, the C&C 27 is an outstanding sailboat, roomy and comfortable cruiser and a competitive racer. From the original design by George Cuther, this model has undergone several alterations. The all new design of the “Mark V” was first produced in 1984. The hull is solid fiberglass and the deck is balsa cored. Compared to older models, this latest design is lighter, shorter and more oriented toward performance.

Accommodations

The forward cabin on the boat is a generous 6’ 4” V-berth with ample storage underneath. Immediately aft, the portable head is located to port, with a hanging locker behind it. Opposite the head, on the starboard side, is located a storage area and cabinets. Moving into the main salon, the wide beam, 5’ 10” headroom and two windows on either side of the boat give a spacious and airy feel to the salon. The teak and holly sole add warmth to the interior. On the starboard side, there is a short and comfortable settee. Moving further aft along the starboard side, there is the galley with its ample storage and deep sink with a hand pump. The generously sized icebox can fit plenty of food and drinks and is fully insulated. The galley is mostly molded in one piece and the edges and corners are rounded, making it very easy to clean. Across the boat on the port side, is a full-length settee that is able to be folded out and widened into a double berth. Moving further aft on the port side, there is a spacious quarterberth with two dry stowage bins underneath.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

1980 C&C Yachts 34, "Spirit" stands out from the other C&C's of the early 80's with her shiny black Awlgrip hull. She has been professionally detailed inside and out. She has a yanmar 2GM20 diesel engine that runs like a top and is extremely fuel efficient, perfect for motoring around the bay on those windless days without breaking the bank! From the companionway facing forward, the navigation station and chart table are to port and the galley, with stainless steel sink, ice box, and 3 burner alcohol stove/oven, is to starboard. It's ready for you and your family! This yacht is named Desiderata. She has been a project for over 3 years now. There is nothing left aboard this yacht that has not been inspected and gone threw. My opinion is that overall the yacht is in great shape for its age and a shining example of the long term durability of a well built fiberglass yacht. Desiderata was re-launched on December 16 2013 in St. Petersburg FL following a 2.5 year refit in the town of Dresser WI at "Shipwreck Boat Works" a highly reputable boat service yard. Having also spent its previous 40+ years in the freshwater of the Midwest's lakes and rivers getting only seasonal use, the yacht has an air of crisp shiny newness about it despite its age. The deck paint and non-skid is "Awlgrip" brand put on under the supervision of the professionals at "Shipwreck Boat Works". The gelcoat on the freeboard is original, but was restored to a high gloss. The bottom was completely smoothed, faired, and then covered with "Interlux Epoxy Barrier Coat System" put on after at least 2 years of drying out on the hard- so there is no risk of sealing water under the barrier coat resulting in a practically blister proof hull. "Interlux Ultra" bottom paint was applied a week before wetting the boat in its new home of St. Petersburg Florida. This yacht sails great in light air, she is fast and nimble, but still behaves herself when the afternoon thunderstorms hit. We have sailed her to every corner of Tampa Bay as well as a 700+ nm journey from St. Petersburg to her current home in Jacksonville FL which took us threw the legendary Florida Keys. We have full faith this yacht could take you anywhere your willing to sail. But we personally have decided to move up to a bigger cruising yacht that is an opportunity we can't pass up. A cross between a Trawler, a Cruiser, and an Aft Cabin here is the Albin Family Cruiser! She is compact and loaded with all the goodies. What a wonderful classic boat the whole family can enjoy! She has had the same owner for the last eleven years. During those years she has always been in fresh water only. This Albin 27 FC is in great shape, but it's in need of a new home because it has seen very little use over the last few years. Mechanically, the Isuzu 157HP diesel and Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission are in great condition. Interior is also in very good shape and has been well maintained, cleaned and cared for. Has dual fuel filters that were changed every season along with the oil filter and oil. Cooling impeller changed last season pro-actively. I am offering for sale a 2003 Cruisers Yachts 3372 Express Cruiser. I have owned the boat for the past 5 years and kept it in the Hudson River during this period. This boat is an all-around great family cruiser with 3 separate sleeping areas with Heat and A/C. This boat is has a wide 11' 8" beam with a spacious cockpit for entertaining. The swim platform offers a tremendous area for kids to play while anchored out or an area to store some water sports inflatables while underway. Cruise speed is 27 MPH and top end of 38 MPH. The boat is still in the water and currently being used. She is powered by twin 6.2 Mercruiser Horizon FWC motors (320 HP) with V-Drives and around 450 Hours on the original motors. The props were just tuned in 2012, and impellers replaced in 2014. While away from the dock power can be provided by a Kohler 5e generator. This unit can power the entire boat including A/C, hot water heater and cooking appliances. Full tune up of the generator in 2014. The super clean cabin features all the creature comforts of home such decked out with maple wood trim. The cabin has full climate control with A/C and Heat. Entertainment is provided by 2 Flat panel TV's and DVD players new 2012 - One for the v-berth - One for the aft cabin. The galley has a fairly nice sized fridge, 2 burner electric stove, hot and cold water sink, and microwave. There are lots of cabinets for storage within the cabin as well as in the head.
