La Mirage is a custom motor yacht launched in 2007 by Amels in Makkum, Netherlands.

AMELS are masters in the art of modern Dutch high-value yacht building. The yard is the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands and one of the top superyacht builders in the world. In 2005 AMELS launched the successful LIMITED EDITIONS and delivered the first yacht of the series in 2007. The shipyard also specialises in the build of full-custom superyachts, with the in-construction Project Signature due to become the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands upon her scheduled launch in 2025.

La Mirage measures 52.30 metres in length, with a max draft of 4.90 metres and a beam of 9.00 metres. She has a gross tonnage of 628 tonnes.

La Mirage has a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure.

Tim Heywood, the multi award-winning yacht designer, has produced some of the finest and largest yachts on the water. Among his exceptional designs is the stunning 133m Al Mirqab, which was awarded the coveted ‘Motor Yacht of the Year’ at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.

Her interior design is by Studio Laura Sessa.

La Mirage also features naval architecture by Amels.

La Mirage has a top speed of 15.50 knots and a cruising speed of 13.00 knots. She is powered by a twin screw propulsion system.

La Mirage has a fuel capacity of 115,000 litres, and a water capacity of 17,000 litres.

A General Description of Motor Yacht LA MIRAGE

LA MIRAGE was previously called project/yacht name (Amels 171). This 52 m (172 foot) luxury yacht was built by Amels Yachts (Of The Damen Shipyard Group) in 2007. Motor Yacht LA MIRAGE is a noteworthy superyacht. The firm of naval architecture who actualised her drawings in respect of the yacht is Amels and Tim Heywood. The interior design work was the talent of Laura Sessa. Luxury yacht LA MIRAGE is a good looking yacht that can accommodate as many as 12 people on board and has a total of 13 crew members.

Luxury motor yacht LA MIRAGE is the third in the range of Amels 171 Limited Edition yachts and was launched in 2007. The Amels 171 Limited Edition concept was an ingenious notion offering owners reduced delivery time by utilizing a semi custom design. The hull was pre-defined and sculptured by Tim Heywood yet the specifics of interior design, accessories and materials was left open as a choice for each individual owner.

The Shipyard Work & Yacht Design for Luxury Yacht LA MIRAGE

Amels was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical composition for LA MIRAGE. Also the company Amels and Tim Heywood successfully collaborated on this venture. Interior designer Laura Sessa was responsible for the creative interior ambience. In 2007 she was formally launched with celebration in Makkum and post sea trials and finishing touches was afterwards passed on to the owner who commissioned her. Amels Yachts (Of The Damen Shipyard Group) completed their new build motor yacht in the Netherlands. Her core hull was crafted from steel. The motor yacht superstructure is fabricated largely from aluminium. With a width of 9 metres / 30 feet LA MIRAGE has fairly large interior. She has a fairly deep draught of 3.15m (10.3ft).

Engines & Speeds On M/Y LA MIRAGE:

The 16V 2000 M70 engine installed in the motor yacht is built by MTU. Connected to her MTU engine(s) are twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship creates 1408 horse power (or 1050 kilowatts). She is fitted with 2 engines. The sum power for the yacht is 2816 HP or 2100 KW.

Bestowing chambers for a limit of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the LA MIRAGE accommodates them comfortably. This ship requires around 13 capable crew to manage.

LA MIRAGE Yacht for Charter

In 2007, a stunning yacht launched into the superyacht world. It combined the talents of the yacht builder Amels and the interior designer Laura Sessa. The 170.7-foot (52m) LA MIRAGE was the result. This steel-hulled displacement yacht accommodates charter parties of up to 12 guests, sleeping in six luxurious staterooms. Her crew of 13 ensure the highest standards of service, not only aboard the yacht itself but also assisting with every need while visiting ports of call and making the most of every destination they visit.

WORLD-CLASS STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE

LA MIRAGE has benefitted from several refits over the years, with the most recent taking place in 2017/18. This saw design genius Sam Sorgiovanni remodel all guest areas – both communal and private. A big emphasis was placed on creating plenty of space and light and really optimizing how guests can enjoy every space. New soft furnishings, furniture and guest linen are of the finest quality. Outside, the sundeck has been revamped, resulting in a great space for both entertaining and relaxing.

LA MIRAGE’s six staterooms were also given first-class treatment. She has a master on the main deck with its own office, en-suite bath and shower room and walk-in closet. There is also a twin cabin on the main deck. Two double cabins and two twins occupy the lower deck.

RELAXATION & ENTERTAINMENT

When it comes to the superyacht lifestyle, LA MIRAGE offers the finest of everything. She has an impressive array of gym equipment, water toys and watersports equipment. The latter includes Sea-Doo WaveRunners, SeaBobs, snorkeling gear, inflatable paddleboards, water skis and towables.

LA MIRAGE also offers spa treatments delivered by an onboard masseuse for a real touch of luxury. First-class audio-visual systems throughout the guest and deck areas ensure guests are entertained at all times. And a first-class chef guarantees every meal is an outstanding occasion.

A Magical Match Made in Moscow. In June 2008, Dmitri Hvorostovsky invited Sondra Radvanovsky to be his guest star in the prestigious Moscow concert series ‘Hvorostovsky and Friends,’ with conductor Constantine Orbelian and the Philharmonia of Russia. This glamorous occasion, captured on film for Russian television, marked these artists’ first-ever musical collaboration – and proved to be a historic event that documented for posterity one of those all-too-rare instances of magical artistic alchemy between two great opera stars. Their electrifying performance was an instant sensation, and a potent preview of the two stars’ effusively acclaimed later appearances together in Il Trovatore at Covent Garden, The Met and The San Francisco Opera.

Delos recorded the live concert, to be released later as the critically-acclaimed CD, ‘Verdi Opera Scenes’. The Russian TV show, featuring their national baritone hero and his dazzling guest, was broadcast throughout the Russian Federation. Upon obtaining that film footage, Delos collaborated with California film editor Steve Scoville, who expertly synched the footage with Delos’s concert audio. The story of the Moscow gold: How the Spanish war was lost

Francisco Olaya 'El Oro de Negrin'

(Ediciones Madre Tierra, Mostoles 1990)

This book is the product of almost thirty years investigation, involving examination of thousands of books and pamphlets, around a million documents, and the combing of 32 archives in Spain and beyond. Olaya's work is an attempt to come up with a satisfactory explanation of the denouement of the Spanish civil war. He is highly critical of the leadership of the PSOE (Socialist Workers Party of Spain, now in power) during the civil war.

In great and documented detail Olaya examines the whole topic of what has hitherto been known as the 'Moscow gold' and which he re-christens 'Negrin's gold', gold to the tune of 5,500 million pesetas (1937). About half of this sum wound up in the Soviet Union. A small portion went to France. The remainder passed to the republican government's purchasing commissions, set up by Indalecio Prieto of the PSOE to obtain war material.

In 1954 Jose Peirats was commissioned by the CNT -in-exile to write his monumental five volume 'La CNT en la revolucion espanola'. In the course of his researches he was accorded access to documentation belonging to the CNT and in London in the keeping of Polgare. When Polgare died in 1957, access to the documents was offered to Olaya by CNT colleagues aware of his researches. Among the documents, he discovered copies of 52 letters written to Negrin by his special agent, identified only as 'C'.

One of the reports from 'C' is an account of an exchange between Salvador do Madariaga (the philosopher and original wartime Ambassador to Britain) and the British Foreign Minister, in which British preoccupation with helping the Francoist side was evident. Olaya, using textual clues, attempted to Identify 'C'.

At first Olaya suspected one Calvino, who had figured in all the Purchasing Commissions ('C' had complained of corruptions by these commissions). Calvino however denied this and further investigations led Olaya to conclude 'C' had been PSOE luminary Celestino Alvarez. This was confirmed to him by two agents who had been operating on behalf of the CNT - FAI in Paris at the time. Further inquiries led Olaya to records from Turkish customs and cargo checks (by a French secret agent) of shipping that passed through the Dardanelles en route to Spain with foodstuffs and war materials. Olaya lists this information in an appendix to his book.

A record of the accidental discovery (at the bottom of a crate of goods being returned to the USSR as defective or unusable) of gold led Olaya to query the conventional account of the shipment of Spain's gold reserves to the USSR 'for safe keeping'. Other seemingly unrelated evidence led to the conclusion that, aside from the usual shipments, gold was removed from Spain via the diplomatic pouch to Prague and, also, unrecorded, aboard other vessels.

Olaya holds that the war was lost by the republic due to corruption in the Purchasing Commissions plus the failure of Negrin and Prieto (when so informed by 'C') to take remedial action.

Olaya argues that half of the gold reserves were was sent to the USSR and half to France, partly for their use of the Purchasing Commissions and partly to open accounts in the name of specific individuals… an account in Negrin's name held 390 million francs, one in the name of Julio Lopez Masegase held 198 millions. Olaya's book details all these. He says that so far no account has been taken of the assets seized from Franco's supporters, reckoned at almost three times the value of the gold held in Spain's treasury.

Franco was later able to recover a part of what had been described as Negrin's personal treasure. Negrin's ability to realise the value of his gold in France makes nonsense of the claim that gold had to be removed to the USSR for safekeeping. Olaya states: 'I wanted to check out everything sold by C who was Negrin's informant on activities taking place abroad but I wanted confirmation from other sources. To my surprise, I was to amass a wealth of documents that confirmed and expanded upon the whole business'.

In 1988 Olaya's book in manuscript was a finalist for the 'Espejo de Espana' prize awarded by Planeta publishers. However, Planeta refused to publish it, as did all of the other major publishers in Spain. As a result, the book has been issued by Ediciones Madre Tierra (Mother Earth) of Mostoles. Its author claims: 'The book is based on documents and we are not championing any interests or making partisan propaganda, merely telling the whole truth'.

The book's appearance has coincided with a PSOE desire to sell itself to the electorate under the slogan of '100 years of Integrity with the Socialist Party'. Olaya himself has explained 'it may appear that the book has emerged at an opportune time, but no, that is mere coincidence'. ~ Paul S.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Ma solo in pochi sono riusciti ad accorgersi della sua presenza in porto, che è durata giusto una mattinata . “ Zefira ”, imbarcazione di 50 metri vincitrice dei prestigiosi riconoscimenti internazionali “Show boats Design Award 2011” e di “World Superyacht Awards 2011” come miglior yacht a vela del mondo per il 2011, è rimasta attraccata presso la banchina Bengasi del molo Cortese di Vibo Marina per poche ore, impegnata in attività di bunkeraggio. Costruita in Nuova Zelanda nei cantieri Fitzroy, ha uno scafo in alluminio e una trave con un raggio di quasi dieci metri. The courtyard features two beautiful pools, one of which is heated in winter months, two relaxing hot tubs and a splash pad for your child’s enjoyment.

La Mirage offers studio efficiencies, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condos from 700 to 1250 sq. ft. All of our condominiums feature a fully equipped kitchen, laundry room, living, and dining area. La Mirage can help you with all your Port Aransas beach rentals from small families to large groups.

After enjoying a relaxing day at La Mirage you can go out and visit the many great shops or eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, many with Gulf views. La Mirage is located on the Gulf of Mexico where the fishing is always fantastic. Whether you go out on your own or go deep sea fishing on a chartered boat, Port Aransas offers several great fishing experiences.

Beautiful & Comfortable

Our condo was beautiful, comfortable and the balcony was exceptional! We had a minor issue with our fridge, so we called the front desk and they sent someone immediately to fix the problem. Other than that, no problems! Will definitely be back based alone on their quick response time.

Planning Next Trip

Very well-equipped kitchen! I usually stay at Port Royal but will consider La Mirage again next time I visit Port A. I like the fact that I was able to choose my unit. Other condos on the island do not do that.
