The Audi Landjet looks set to take four-ringed brand into the future of motoring, and here’s everything we know about the next-generation Audi electric car:

According to a Top Gear report dated September 30, 2022, the Audi grandsphere concept, unveiled in 2021, is the precursor to the highly anticipated Audi Landjet model. Oliver Hoffmann, BoM member responsible for Technical Development, Audi, told the British publication that the show car “gives a clear view to the first Artemis car.” Hoffmann went on to state that Audi will use both exterior and interior design of the open-top sphere concept for the dealer-bound EV.

The Audi grandsphere is a low-slung, highly aerodynamic, avant-garde four-door. It’s no ordinary sedan by any means. It blends the characteristics of a grand tourer and a shooting brake as well. And interestingly, it’s almost impossible to figure that out if you’re looking at it from the front three quarters. The designers have discretely packaged the dramatic proportions at the rear.

The Audi grandsphere concept has a striking appearance at the front with the concave hexagonal Singleframe and the narrow headlights that look like focused eyes. On the sides, the chief design element is the dynamically sloping arc of the roofline akin to Audi Sportback models. Also worth noting are the 23-inch wheels inspired by the Audi Avus from the 1990s. As for the rear, the boat tail looks like a piece of art, and would be the talking point if translated into production.

The real highlight of the Audi grandsphere is its futuristic interior. In fact, getting the interior right was so important in this case that Audi designed the concept from the inside out. The company is reimagining the interior of its cars with the trio of sphere concepts (Skysphere, Grandsphere, and Urbansphere) for the future when autonomous driving will be the new normal.

With reversed rear doors and no B-pillars, the grandsphere concept gives a grand welcome to its occupants, and in no time, the sense of spaciousness, opulence, and future forwardness starts reeling in. The 2+2 seater provides the most attractions for the passengers in the front seats, not in the rear seats like traditional sedans. It’s ready for Level 4 autonomous driving, on enabling which the steering wheel and pedals disappear. There’s no traditional dashboard either, and effectively, the car becomes a spacious first-class lounge.

The Audi Landjet should be a revolutionary product at Audi, and that’s exactly how Marc Lichte, Head of Design, Audi, described the project while speaking to caranddriver.com in December 2020. At Volkswagen Group’s Power Day event in March 2021, Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi, had hinted that the development of the dealer-bound Audi Landjet concept (the Audi grandsphere) will begin shortly.

Neither an ‘A’ nor a ‘Q’ model

In an interview with Wirtschafts Woche in January 2021, Duesmann discussed the branding of the Landjet. He said that “the first from the new Artemis e-car business unit,” internally called Audi Landjet, will belong to a “new vehicle category.” It will be neither a large sedan positioned above the Audi A8 (and thus not an Audi A9) nor a large SUV positioned above the Audi Q7 . It’s not an “A or Q” series car, Duesmann confirmed.

While all developments so far indicate an unconventional design for the Audi Landjet, some things are likely to be traditional. For instance, the front-end of the car will likely feature a Singleframe grille. Singleframe is a signature design element of Audi, and it won’t go away despite the fact that EVs don’t need large grilles

The German automaker has said that the Singleframe grille will appear on even self-driving Audi models, MotorTrend reported on July 19, 2021. The large front grille is as crucial to aesthetics as functionality, perhaps even more so in the EV era where designs are changing drastically with the flexibility that electric powertrains provide. It will continue being a part of the “electric face,” as the company’s designers refer to the front-end of Audi EVs.

New materials

Norbert Weber, head of Interior Design, Audi, has suggested that the company will use alternative interior materials that are easy on both environment and animals in its upcoming EVs. Speaking to CarBuzz , he said that the company is developing vegan materials and considering surrogate leather. Soon, Audi models will have new materials, textures, and fabrics, the design chief added.

Specifications

According to a report Automobilwoche released on December 5, 2022, an ‘SSP 61’ platform, a version of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), will underpin Audi Artemis models. Previously, during Volkswagen Group’s New Auto strategy announcement, Duesmann confirmed mixed usage of PPE and SSP elements as well as a unified battery cell format.

With the Audi Artemis model, we will be spearheading major modules of the SSP starting in 2025. It symbolizes the transition from the PPE platform to the SSP. And with E3 2.0 and the new unified battery cell format, it already brings an important part of the SSP into serious production from 2026 onwards. Duesmann indicated at Volkswagen Group’s Power Day event that the Audi Landjet will debut the parent company’s unified battery cell format, which offers the best conditions for the eventual transition to solid-state battery technology. He said:

The model (Artemis) will play a key role in its respective model series. Among other things, it will be the spearhead of our electronic platform. At the Audi Annual Media Conference 2022 on March 17, 2022, Oliver Hoffmann reaffirmed that the Audi Artemis model will be Volkswagen Group’s first EV to feature battery cells built with unified technology.

In the Group we also opted for a streamlined, harmonized cell technology and the Artemis project, which customers will see in 2025, this harmonized cell format will be applied for the first time in a Group vehicle. Audi has a pioneering role in that, and it also ties in with this unified technology in terms of achieving a volume effect as well. By 2030, the SSP will cover a bigger volume than the PPE and the MEB put together. Volkswagen Group wants to sell more than 40 million vehicles based on the SSP over its lifetime. Duesmann said at the New Auto strategy announcement event that the rollout of the new mechatronics platform and the related reduction in complexity will be faster than ever before.

Battery & Motor

The grandsphere concept offers clues on what Audi has in mind for its new electric flagship and next-gen born-EV models. The grandsphere has two electric motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear, generating 530 kW (710 hp) of combined power and 960 Nm (708 lb.-ft.) of combined torque. Feeding these high-output motors is a 120 kWh battery pack that can provide a range of more than 750 km (466 miles) when driving efficiently. This would be in the ballpark of the Mercedes EQS sedan which does 770 km (478 miles) in the WLTP metric.

The system voltage is double the norm – 800 volts, so rapid or ultra-fast charging is possible. The maximum DC charging rate is 270 kW, and it allows charging from 5 to 80% in less than 25 minutes. Just ten minutes of charging can provide a range of more than 300 km (186 miles).

Audi is rolling out a high-power charging (HPC) network across Europe that is exclusive to its customers. The company opened a pilot HPC outlet with six reservable charging points with up to 320 kW in Nuremberg, Germany, in 2022. A second compact pilot site is coming up in Zurich, Switzerland by December 2022, followed by more sites in Salzburg and Berlin in Germany. The company’s home market will get additional charging stations in 2023 and 2024. These would be accessible to customers of the Audi Landjet.

New vehicle software architecture

The Audi Artemis will debut a new-generation vehicle software architecture called E³ 2.0, and CARIAD will be responsible for the development of the same. Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO, CARIAD, announced this development at Volkswagen Group’s New Auto strategy announcement event. He said:

CARIAD business model

With CARIAD, we are fully committed to developing the leading automotive software stack in the industry. We are moving towards a synergetic business model. Most of the software-related R&D costs of the brand have been shifted to CARIAD, which will be reported as a standalone entity in the future. The CARIAD business model foresees a significant upfront investment phase of about 2 to 2.5 billion Euros per year. In the income phase, CARIAD will receive licensable fees paid by the brands or paid by potential third parties for the software use. Duesmann talked about the benefits of the E³ 2.0 software architecture at the New Auto strategy announcement event. He said:

When it comes to the advantages and performance of the SSP, E3 2.0 is probably the best example. Especially E³ 2.0 as one of the high-value modules will be the enabler for a growing portfolio of software services. Through this electronic architecture, we will be able to provide new functionalities quickly and efficiently to our customers across the group and we will realize significant economies of scale. Level 3 & Level 4 autonomous driving capability

VW and Bosch have joined hands to develop the software required to build Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities for VW Group’s future cars, such as the Artemis project, according to an Automotive News report dated January 26, 2022. Bosch will get the marketing rights in the agreement, and VW will use Bosch’s AOS operating system for autonomous driving.

CARIAD CEO Dirk Hilgenberg told journalists on January 25, 2022, that the Bosch-VW partnership will help Audi catch up with the Artemis Project. Hilgenberg said that even though the brands will start work on Level 2+ and Level 3 technologies, the Artemis will also be Level 4 ready.

Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving require considerable driver intervention and are not fully autonomous. However, Level 4 autonomous driving is a ‘High Automation’ level, where systems do not require inputs from the driver but their functions are limited to some areas—such as in a parking lot or on highways. The driver needs to take control when the vehicle leaves the defined areas, like when it drives into town.

Germany’s federal cabinet has passed the draft for fully autonomous driving, which would serve as the model for other EU countries. Mercedes-Benz already offers Level 3 autonomous driving in the country, as an optional package, with the S-Class. The Audi Landjet will be technically ready for Level 4 autonomous driving. In Level 4 on the highway, the driver would “no longer need to operate the car,” and so, he/she would “no longer have to be able to reach the steering wheel and the touchscreens” with hands all the time,” Lichte said.

Volkswagen Group has allocated the Audi Artemis project production to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Hannover plant. The German factory will manufacture a slew of BEVs in the future.

Release Date

Originally, Audi’s plan was to make the Artemis electric car available to customers in 2024. Various external and internal factors have officially delayed the release date to the second half of the decade.

For a few years now, Volkswagen Group has been announcing new software platforms and autonomous driving functions for its future electric cars, especially those originally scheduled for around 2025. However, these planned groundbreaking innovations are repeatedly pushing back launches, especially those from Audi and Porsche.

According to an Automobilwoche report dated December 5, 2022, the originally conceived Audi Artemis is dead. Oliver Blume, the CEO of Volkswagen Group (and also Porsche), has “pulled the plug” on the former prestigious project, the German publication said. Volkswagen Group hasn’t confirmed this rumor, but Blume has scheduled a new software strategy announcement on December 15, 2022, during which he could share an update on this matter.

For now, it’s best not to pin your hopes on the Audi Artemis electric car. It will probably go on sale closer to 2027 and the final car might not be as radical as Duesmann and other executives were pitching it back in 2020.

Previously, according to a report Automobilwoche published on July 10, 2022, Audi won’t conduct the launch until the end of 2026, perhaps even 2027. Investors, dealers, and prospective customers would surely be disappointed, but the German automaker has come up with an interim solution.

Automobilwoche claimed in the July 2022 report that Audi will launch “a slimmed-down version” of the originally planned model (that will now arrive in 2026 or 2027) with a “higher body shape” to fulfill its promise of releasing an efficient electric car from Artemis by the middle of the decade. Internally called ‘Audi Landyacht,’ this model won’t be as advanced with respect to autonomous driving capabilities, which could mean that it won’t support Level 4 hands-free driving, at least not at launch. Instead of Software 2.0, it’ll settle for Software 1.2.

Audi to focus on luxury models

Audi has confirmed that there would be no successor to the Q2, and the carmaker is not going ahead with developing a new A1. In early 2022, Duesmann told German business newspaper Handelsblatt that the VW Group has redefined the roles of its brands, and Audi has been realigned as a premium carmaker. As such, Audi is limiting its model range downward while expanding upward with cars like the Q8 e-tron, Artemis and Apollon .

The Audi activesphere concept is the fourth and final member of the Audi sphere family of concept cars. Like the other three EV models introduced progressively since August 2021, it has a unique character designed as per the needs of people with an active lifestyle.

The activesphere concept is a soft off-roader that blends a poised two-door coupe with a few traits of an SUV, such as high ground clearance, black fender flares, knobby tires, etc. The show car flaunts an aggressive face with ultra-slim, angular headlights, an athletic side profile with oversized, protruding wheels, and a taut tail section. The finesse of a coupe is present all around, too. A long, low hood slopes down all the way to the front. The roofline, which is similarly low, swoops down to the short trunk lid. We’ll know more when Audi reveals the concept car in early 2023.

Best Sedan I Have Ever Owned

I have owned my 2020 S8 for about one month so far. Coming from the previous general A8. I have owned S-class & BMW's. I can't tell you how fun this machine is to drive. It hauls butt like nothing else. It is like having a supercar in the comfort of a luxury sedan. Sure, it's big and isn't flat around corners, but for it's size, it handles the road well. Get it on the freeway, mash the accelerator and you are off like a rocket. And it sounds tough too, without being too loud. There just aren't many cars on the road that can keep up. Audi say 0-60 is 3.8, but R&T says 3.2. The suspension is tight in dynamic mode and does a great job of eliminating the bumps in comfort+ mode. Overall, the suspension does a great job of keeping the car planted and keeping the ride comfortable. The interior is a huge upgrade from the previous generation. Once you get to know the system, it is thought out and works well. I looked at a 911, but the comfort of the seats and spaciousness of the cabin won me over. I haven't looked back since. If you are considering an S-class or BMW, or even an A8, I highly suggest you test drive an S8. It will change your commute into a joy.

Land yacht that performs like a nimble sports car. After checking out all the comparables, the sheer performance and muted styling won me over. I've driven them all - but nothing really compares. I have the all-blacked out version and my favorite part is that virtually nobody knows what this car is, which I really like with today's preference for more in-your-face super sedans.

S8 - A classic V8

My '21 S8 is quick, smooth and sporty and at the same time elegant, roomy and comfortable. So you get the benefits of both performance and luxury. Sometimes that's a tough balancing act but Audi found the sweet spot with the S8. Originally I had planned on replacing my '09 A8 with a new A8 turbo and found out Audi discontinued that engine option for the vehicle in '23. As a result, I had planned to order a '23 S8 with the V8 turbo and then have a long wait to get the car. In spite of this world of low inventory, my local Audi dealer found a low mileage '21 S8. The car is pristine and amazing to drive. The style, the trim and the technology are all world class. I entitled my review classic V8 because as we transition to an electric world it looks like V8s are going to be one of the first casualties. So I concluded now was the time to buy one as later model S8s are hard to find. Glad I made the move!

A scientific marvel! At first it seemed so much larger and technologically intimidating than my previous gen S8 I felt dwarfed. However after a few days becoming acclimated we bonded. Whether driving, or being driven in one of the safest, most comfortable automobiles on the road you are completely insulated. I've owned/own numerous exotics and performance sedans. This car is a bargain.

Audi Landjet Will Be A 'Revolution’ With 'Completely Different' Design

The Volkswagen Group is working on a new flagship electric vehicle that currently goes by the “Landjet” internal codename. Audi is leading the ambitious engineering project as part of the Project Artemis plan to take the German conglomerate’s EV push to the next level. Car and Driver sat down and had a chat with the man in charge of Ingolstadt’s design, Marc Lichte, to learn more about the mysterious zero-emissions car.

“Landjet” is being developed to cover long distances without the need for human input, which can only mean we should be expecting a large battery pack and an advanced autonomous driving system. Forget about Audi’s current designs as Lichte said the styling will be “completely different,” adding the vehicle “will be a revolution.”

As usual when talking about VAG products, Landjet is being prepared to accommodate more than just a single badge. Other than carrying the Four Rings, the tech-laden EV will allegedly spawn Bentley and Porsche versions for a vehicle that will ride on the modular PPE architecture jointly developed by Audi and Porsche for big vehicles.

Rumor has it the car “Landjet” will have three rows, which would typically imply either an SUV body style or a minivan. However, it might actually be a sedan if the reports are accurate, much like the Tesla Model S. Bespoke EVs are in virtually all cases more spacious inside than a similarly sized vehicle equipped with a combustion engine, so a three-row sedan can be done without exaggerating the proportions to fit that third row.

While the styling remains a complete mystery at this point, the 2017 Aicon concept did portray a high-end electric sedan with a level 5 autonomous driving system. It only had a 2+2 layout, but you could probably install three rows of seats given its sheer size as it was a whopping 5.44 meters (17.9 feet) long.

Mirroring the Landjet’s rumored long-range capabilities, the Aicon was also envisioned as the ideal companion for an extended trip. When Audi unveiled the concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show, it promised a range of up to 800 kilometers (497 miles).

It’s too soon to say whether the Aicon’s specs will rub off on the Landjet, which is scheduled to come out in 2024. It’s certainly going to be a long wait as the design hasn’t been finalized yet, so there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Once it’ll be ready to hit the assembly line, VAG’s electric crown jewel could be put together at the Hannover factory in Germany where it builds the Amarok pickup truck and the Transporter van.

Audi Q7 Coastline Concept Is A Real Land Yacht

Just in case you thought the new Q7 V12 TDI wasn't ridiculous enough with its 757.5 lb-ft of torque, Audi has made this nautically-themed Q7 Coastline Concept. Though we've gotta say that while this thing certainly is a land yacht, Audi missed the boat by not fully capitalizing on the maritime theme. First off, any ego-stroking self-respecting yacht owner needs a captain's hat , and plainly there is none such haberdashery included. There's also a very embarrassing lack of a " tender " vehicle; you would think that with all that V12 TDI torque you'd at least be able to tow along a Rinspeed sQuba or two. And while all the dark smoked oak trim is nice, we also wish the steering wheel was wooden with external spoke-handles. Oh, and the gear selector should be a big, brass lever. However there is one extravagance the we really like on the Q7 Coastline: the sun deck, which is just perfect for catching a tan... oh wait, that's the roof.

Audi is presenting a very special concept car at the Geneva Motor Show: The Audi Q7 coastline combines the breathtaking power of a twelve-cylinder TDI with the elegant style of an exclusive yacht. A large part of the high-performance SUV's exterior and interior is bathed in a trendy white. Under the hood resides the world's strongest diesel engine in a series-production vehicle - the six-liter V12 capable of delivering 368 kW (500 hp) of power. The Audi Q7 coastline comes in Inuit, a special white that creates a pearl effect reminiscent of the glistening luminance of the polar region. Audi, the leading brand in automotive design, initiated a popular trend with this color years ago - studies such as the white Shooting Brake Concept displayed at the Geneva Motor Show 2006 have become style-setters. In contrast to the production version of the Q7 V12 TDI, the casing for the exterior mirrors on the Audi Q7 coastline is white as well; the single-frame radiator grill and the side air intake slots come in dark High Gloss Steel. The Audi Q7 coastline has the same body modifications as the Audi Q7 V12 TDI, with widened wheel arches and striking front and back bumpers that immediately catch the eye. The equally stylish and trendy interior is dominated by alabaster white, a color popular on luxury yachts. Also in luminous white are the carpet, embroidered floor mats made of fine wool, pillar trim, roof lining, seat upholstery made of plush velvet and Valcona leather, seatbelts, steering wheel, the front of the cockpit and the door trim. The majority of the switches and controls as well as the instrument panel with cowl are likewise in this trendy color from Audi. In the interior, additional accents are set by aluminum elements on components such as the air inlet nozzles and door handles. Further trendy touches include nut brown piping on the seats as well as fine brown piping on the instrument panel and the door. Parts of the armrest, the gearshift lever knob and the inner door sill trims are made of American walnut veneer in which thin strips made of dark smoked oak wood have been embedded as a further maritime reference. The same combination can also be found on the floor of the luggage compartment, which contains two integrated folding boxes. The wood is waxed, not varnished. As a result, the pores in the wood remain open, giving it a uniquely charming feel and silky glow. Concentrated power and high efficiency: 368 kW (500 hp) and 1,000 Nm (757.56 lb-ft) Under the hood of the Audi Q7 coastline concept car resides a concentrated powerhouse: The V12 TDI is writing a whole new chapter in the annals of diesel technology. Drawing on 5,934 cm3 of displacement, the six-liter engine delivers 368 kW (500 hp) of power and an impressive 1,000 Nm (757.56 lb-ft) of torque between 1,750 and 3,000 rpm. As a result, the vehicle performs like a world-class sportscar - sprinting from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 5.5 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). On average, the world's only 12-cylinder diesel engine in a passenger car uses just 11.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (19.77 mpg) - a much better figure than comparable gasoline engines from competitors. The unique diesel power of the Audi Q7 with V12 TDI engine is not the only factor to render it the ultimate high-performance SUV. Equally sporty in nature are the vehicle's six-speed tiptronic and quattro drive as well as running gear with adaptive air suspension. Behind the large wheels are ceramic brake disks. A DVD navigation system, a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System and leather seats with electric heating and adjustment switches are symptomatic of the luxurious standards in the Audi Q7 coastline.

In Seventies Top Trumps  land, Pininfarina was one of the kings. As well as clothing virtually every major Ferrari from 1951 until the Prancing Horse took its design destiny in-house in 2011, these guys regularly smashed it out of the park when it came to concept cars. Case in point: the Modulo , which rebodied a Ferrari 512 S endurance racing car as a flying saucer. To this day, it remains the show car to end all show cars, a four-wheeled WTF (not least because using a 512 S as a donor car is majorly punchy).

Now meet the Pura Vision, the follow-up to the Pininfarina Battista . At this point we must remind you that these are the products of Automobili Pininfarina, which is a separate entity to the original carrozzeria . It's effectively a start-up whose goal is to be the world’s leading purveyor of luxury electric cars. Since 2018, a team of 116 has been building and refining the Battista 1,876bhp hypercar, while new CEO Paolo Dellachà, formerly chief product and engineering officer, insists the company’s financials are increasingly robust.

We like the Battista a lot, but the Pura Vision is something else altogether. Car designers will give you chapter and verse on the importance of stance and proportion, but this thing gleefully rips the rule book to shreds. Look how shallow the glasshouse is compared to the body. Check out the Pura Vision’s floating roof. Stare if you dare into its minimalist face and notice the way the cockpit sits within the body. It even has preposterous front and rear ‘suicide’ doors.

It’s also huge, almost six metres long, two metres wide and 1.7m tall, and has the imperious bearing of an automotive super yacht. The nautical parallel is encouraged by design boss Dave Amantea, who says the Pura Vision looks especially like a boat from above. Dave, it should be noted, is also one of the world’s most enthusiastic human beings.

“The first iteration dates back to 2018. A 40 per cent scale model was presented in 2019, and we wanted to gather, not suggestions as such, but the vibes and understanding of what our customers wanted,” he explains. “We have to bring the customer to the centre of our project. Remember, these guys own everything. They’re probably getting a little bored because they can buy anything they want. This is the most difficult segment to make ‘wow!’ to the people.”

This surely gives Automobili Pininfarina scope, if not total carte blanche, to go a bit nuts. They have delivered. Although its production targets are more ambitious for the quasi-SUV than the Battista – think into the thousands rather than 150 – imagine you’re a cash rich tech bro (or sister) on the hunt for something electrified but outrageous. The Pura Vision manages to look very Silicon Valley while channelling Pininfarina’s history. The lounge doors are a nod to 1956’s Lancia Florida, the roof – currently being co-developed with a Swiss specialist – echoes the Modulo, and the body section where the doors meet is a conscious link to the Battista. A central ‘biscotto’ supports the curved single-piece side windows, which are integral to the doors. The headlights are hidden and use L.E.S.S nanofibre technology; the fibres measure less than one millimetre thick.

It sits on 23 inch wheels, the minimum diameter on a vehicle with proportions as bonkers as these, its tyres wearing an elegant white pinstripe. The rear tapers in beautifully, another aspect best appreciated from above – a vantage point Dave the designer actively encourages. A ring of anodised aluminium runs around the car’s beltline.

Nor is it overcooked. Amantea says that simplicity underpins everything, partly because the purer the surfaces the greater the contrast that can be achieved when clients start spending big in the bespoke department. The body on the show car is finished in Bianco Sestriere Gloss paint, with powerful contrasting exposed carbon fibre on the body’s lower elements.

“Details are vital. You need the unexpected element that pops out to give you the emotion,” Amantea says. “You have to amaze the customer, balance the classic effect with the futurism. The idea of finding beauty in imperfection, it’s in our bones. It’s about finding the perfect emotion not the perfect alignment of line.”

The interior is equally fabulous, contains four ‘floating’ captain’s chairs, and aims for an airier sensation than the exterior suggests. The central display rises into view when needed, disappears out of view when not. Each head-rest has a speaker to create individual sound zones. Charcoal leather on the dashboard and door tops creates an ‘accent band’ that mirrors the aluminium one on the outside. The centre console, upper seatbacks and headlining combine 30 per cent wool and 70 per cent recycled polyester. There’s a fridge hidden between the rear seats.

Automobili Pininfarina calls the Pura Vision an ‘e-LUV’ – electric luxury utility vehicle – an abbreviation that might get lost in translation anywhere within the M62. We love it all the same, for its colossal ambition and emotive cab-rear design. No news yet on what platform it might use or the extent of its electric powertrain. A deal is being done on the former, with the latter being shared with the Battista. So it will have the performance to back up its presence.

Was lange währt, wird endlich gut – nach über einem Jahr Verhandlungen steht fest, dass am Standort Neckarsulm zwei neue Audi-Modelle gebaut werden. Darauf haben sich Betriebsrat und Vorstand des VW-Konzerns geeinigt , wie die „Heilbronner Stimme“ berichtet. Bei den Automodellen handelt es sich um Nachfolger des Audi A8, die rein elektrisch betrieben werden sollen. Ab 2027 beginnt die Fertigung in der baden-württembergischen Stadt.

Well, the times are changing, and Bentley is ushering electrified powertrains into its portfolio. Part of this push is a hybrid powertrain-equipped Flying Spur. The company’s flagship sedan now features a 2.9-liter V6 that mates to a hybrid system and sends 536 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. Admittedly, that’s down slightly in power from the V8, but you see an increase in fuel efficiency of 2 mpg combined over that V8. This means the Flying Spur Hybrid sees a combined EPA rating of 19 mpg.

These large luxury cars with massive engines dominated the roads in their time and remain a symbol of opulence and success.

Back when roads used to be calm as the sea back in the '60s and '70s, powerful muscle cars roared across the tarmac , turning heads wherever they went. However, there were also land yachts, which were plush, luxurious, and gigantic cars that ran on V8 engines. These full-size luxury cars were some of the finest examples of automotive craftsmanship , with their phenomenally luxurious cabins and massive bodies. Land yachts glided over the road quite comfortably, much like boats on the water. Today, brands like Lincoln and Rolls-Royce continue to craft these amazing pieces of engineering and design.

While every land yacht came with great interiors and plenty of luxury, several across history stood out. Be it due to some special feature they had or just how they looked, some land yachts became more special than the rest, raising the cool factor. In that vein, take a look at 10 of the coolest land yacht cars ever made.

10 Cadillac Eldorado (1971)

Very big and very comfortable, the Cadillac Eldorado was the quintessential land yacht . After all, an old-school Cadillac hit the mark when it came to being huge and luxurious. The Eldorado nameplate was the top end of the brand's rather luxurious lineup, and the 1971 model, in its 9th generation, was the peak of the Eldorado.

A massive 2-door luxury beast that came with the best luxuries and top-of-the-line features at the time, the supreme luxury Eldorado rode on a huge 500 cu-in V8 engine. Churning out 345 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, it was never short on power either.

9 Buick Riviera (1973)

The Riviera is one of the most renowned models from Buick. Buick as a brand stood for great luxury and style, and the Riviera embodied it the best . In its third generation from 1971 to 1973, the Riviera came with a beautiful boat-tail design.

A proper luxury saloon through and through, the Riviera's cabin was one of the most luxurious at the time. The seats were far more comfortable than even the best sofa, and under the hood, the car came with a 455 cu-in V8 unit that churned out 265 horsepower.

The dream car of its day, the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was launched in 1906, and it remains a collector's dream to this day. This big, beautiful land yacht launched the Rolls-Royce brand , and the manufacturer has never looked back since, sticking to what made them successful and popular in the first place.

The 48 horsepower that the Silver Ghost generated outmatched any other automobile at the time, cementing its name in the history books with its unique, exceptional, and innovative design that put comfort and luxury at the very top. Of course, its price tag reflected that, too .

7 Oldsmobile Toronado (1966)

6 Pontiac Bonneville (1969)

The Bonneville first came off the Pontiac assembly line in 1958 , and over the next 3 decades, it was the top-notch luxury model for the brand. In its fourth generation, the Pontiac Bonneville came with the same style, luxury, and ride quality that had made the car famous.

This iteration of the Bonneville also came with a stylish slanted dashboard , and the cabin now had a lot of wood, enhancing the luxurious feel inside. With its wide taillights and massive wheelbase, the fourth-gen Pontiac Bonneville was one car that truly occupied every road it went on, armed with a gargantuan 7.0-liter V8 engine that made 360 horsepower.

5 Lincoln Continental (1972)

The Lincoln Continental, in its heyday, was the most luxurious car sold by the Ford Motor Company . The Continental is an American icon, and not without reason. This massive barge was as luxurious as it was huge, and past Presidents, too, agreed.

The Continental, with its great ride quality, plush interiors, and remarkable power, had proven to be a great nameplate for the Lincoln brand. In 1972, the Lincoln Continental was in its fifth generation, loaded with modern specs and the best luxuries money could buy at the time.

4 Imperial LeBaron (1966)

Chrysler first introduced the Imperial nameplate in 1926, as one of their luxury models . Three decades later, Imperial became its own company in 1955, birthing its own cars and sticking to their roots, making them as luxurious as possible.

This included the Imperial LeBaron, which ran on a massive 7.2-liter V7 engine and churned out 350 horsepower. The Imperial LeBaron was undeniably one of America's finest cars from the era , thanks to its contemporary and timeless look, and its state-of-the-art luxurious cabin, which had leather and wood accents.

3 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham (1973)

The New Yorker Brougham from Chrysler sported the styling from the Fuselage, and it stood at a massive 18.5-feet long. Running on a 440 cu-in V8 engine, the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham could have had a lot more power . Sadly, it was the '70s, and fuel and emission standards dictated that Chrysler undertune the engine to reduce power, which only meant 215 horses for the vehicle.

This land yacht came with leather upholstery, a silky smooth ride, and a cabin to die for. Quite the head turner, the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham came towards the end of the era of the land yachts but didn't fail to make its mark on the history books.

2 Mercedes-Benz 600 (1965)

If you'd thought land yachts were limited to North America, think again. How could Mercedes-Benz not have been featured on a list of the best luxury saloons ? 18 feet long, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman was meant to be driven by chauffeurs, as most Mercedes cars are.

Meanwhile, you could stay in the back, sipping on the finest liqueur, enjoying the excellent ride quality of the 600 Pullman . Running on a 6.3-liter V8 engine that made 245 horsepower , the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman was meant to be driven at cruise speeds. Its massive road presence was quite the eye-catcher, and so were its ultra-luxurious interiors.

1 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail (2021)

A $28 million land yacht from Rolls-Royce , the Boat Tail was launched last year in 2021 and got the entire automotive world talking. With 1800 parts that make it ultra-premium, Rolls-Royce only made three models of the Boat Tail, making it one of the rarest and most expensive road-going cars on the planet.

Inspired by the 2017 Sweptail , the Rolls-Royce Boat-Tail is the brand's most ambitious project ever. The highlight of the package is the parasol which extends from the rear deck, which could only be described as a mechanical flower blooming. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography , an exhibition of 20th-century photographs of Moscow, opens at Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and remains on display through Saturday, June 21, 2003.

Moscow has been a powerful magnet for many Russian photographers of the 20th century. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography presents the work of 31 photographers, whose images have defined the visual experience of Moscow from the 1920s to the present. Diverse in form and strategy, the 90 photographs chosen for the exhibition trace the history of Russian documentary photography and offer insight into individual practices. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's constructivist visions and Evgenii Khaldei's humanist landscapes to Igor Moukhin's scenes of urban spectacle and alienation in the works of Russia's key 20th-century photographers, Moscow ventures beyond the expected image as a site of famous landmarks, architectural treasures and dramatic lifestyles.

Early 20th-century photographers Boris Ignatovich and Arkadii Shaikhet saw themselves in the vanguard of an emerging mass-media culture, defining with their cameras the visual experience of Soviet modernity. For nearly 70 years, Soviet photography was assigned the duty of maintaining the ideological rigidity of the Soviet State. Yet, as examples of the work of Iakov Khalip, Anatolii Egorov, Mikhail Savin, and Mark Markov-Grinberg show, Soviet photographic practices were much more complex than has been previously acknowledged. The works of these photographers remain intensely compelling to a modernist eye.

Contemporary Russian photographers, such as Lev Melikhov, Valerii Stigneev and Sergei Leontiev, engage with the legacy of the Soviet documentary photography. But for them the documentary is a complex and multivalent genre, which incorporates subjectivity, ambiguity and reflexivity and comments on social and cultural issues without losing sight of the position from which that commentary is made. In the recent photographs by Vladimir Kupriyanov, Igor Moukhin, Anna Gorunova and Pakito Infante, the "real" space of Moscow is replaced by an imaginary and optical spaces of virtuality.

The works in the exhibition are on loan from Moscow's Cultural Center Dom, and many are being shown outside Russia for the first time. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Wallach Art Gallery is publishing an illustrated catalogue with a scholarly essay by the exhibition curator, Nadia Michoustina, a Ph.D. candidate in Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages. The essay presents a nuanced history of Russian photography of the 20th century, and contributes to an interpretation of extraordinary images.
