Blue is a Custom performance racing sailboat with movable water ballast.  She was designed by Paul Bieker of Riptide Design in Seattle Washington and built in 2012 by Jim Betts of Betts Boats in Anacortes Washington.

Blue is a one off custom boat, built using carbon fiber and Divinycell foam core sandwich construction.  The design incorporates movable water ballast, a deep bulb T keel, and twin outboard rudders.  Blue is sloop rigged with a carbon fiber mast and boom w/ ECsix Carbon Standing Rigging.

Blue was designed to allow for safe, fast offshore sailing with a smaller crew. The design includes many creature comforts to ensure the crew is well looked after. She boasts a comfortable interior for after race socializing and passage making, with easily removable upholstered cushions, forced air furnace and 12v refrigeration. 

She has an extensive inventory of primarily North Sails, modern calibrated B&G instruments and is powered by a 2018 Volvo inboard diesel engine.

Blue is a turn key offshore race boat which can be sailed with limited crew due to her water ballast system.  She has an impressive recent race record including being the 3rd boat to finish the 2022 Pacific Cup.

From Then to Now

The new edzell castle.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Bird Key was a small island in Sarasota Bay, rising only a few feet above the surrounding shallow grass flats. In 1906, Thomas Martin Worcester, of Cincinnati, purchased the 12-acre island, and after some dredging and filling, began to build a castle for his beloved wife, Davie Lindsay Worcester. He would name it The New Edzell Castle, after his wife’s Scottish ancestral home. Sadly, his wife died in October 1912 and did not live to see the completion of her husband’s “labor of love.” The first mansion in Sarasota boasted electric and gas lights, steam heat, and hot and cold running water in every room. At the opening reception in 1914, the Sarasota Times wrote, “Set in one of nature’s fairest temples, it is a monument to the memory of a gifted and a good woman.”

John Ringling

Thomas Worcester left Sarasota not long thereafter, and in 1922, John Ringling purchased Bird Key. He planned to convert the Worcester home into a summer White House for President Warren Harding, but Harding’s death in 1923 changed his plans. The Bird Key mansion then became the home of John Ringling’s sister, Ida Ringling North, until her death in 1950. Ringling’s yacht, the 125 foot Zalophus, was often docked there before it sank off Lido Key after hitting an unchartered rock in 1930.

In 1959, Arvida Realty, Inc. purchased the key and filled it in to allow for 511 lots; 291 waterfront and 220 off-water sites. One unique feature of the development would be an underground electric utility system, well ahead of its time. Arvida promoted Bird Key in national newspapers, saying, “Who hasn’t dreamed of living on an idyllic tropical island?”

I’m a millennial boss — after firing half my staff, I finally found the key to success

When her marketing agency suffered a $65,000 tax debt, Maddy Birdcage fired half of her employees and started from scratch.

Birdcage, 34, blamed her own micromanagement. Now, the millennial boss lets her employees make their own schedule and wear what they want — plus, she’s vowed to treat them to private yacht trips.

Birdcage says Birdcage Marketing now makes a $58,800 monthly profit.

“I have always loved what I do, but I used to hate business. I really resented my business at times,” Birdcage confided to SWNS . “Now I’m doing it my way — I’ve never been happier.”

The mom of two, who hails from Queensland, Australia, started her marketing agency nine years ago after experiencing “toxic” work environments and feeling “underwhelmed” by the support of her previous managers .

After receiving questionable advice and succumbing to self-doubt, Birdcage began micromanaging her staff.

“I was constantly having one-on-one reviews with the team — really structured meetings,” Birdcage explained. “It wasn’t giving people autonomy.”

She said those decisions led to the tax debt and the firing of half of her team.

“I kept half of them and rebuilt it” by hiring self-motivated problem solvers , Birdcage shared.

“I had to hire people who are independent. As your boss, I’m not here to hold your hand,” she added. “I’m here to empower you to solve your own problems and to build your own career.”

She lets her team of nine wear what they want (Birdcage recently donned a hot pink glittery suit to work); bring their kids to the office during school holidays; set their own schedule; and work from home when necessary.

“Some might say, ‘I only want to work three days a week.’ Another might say, ‘I want to move away, but I want to keep my job,'” she noted. “A lot of them have school-age kids, so [they] need school hours.”

She revealed that she even has a TV room in the office for the kids.

Birdcage also feels it’s important to treat her staff, and she has set her sights on taking them on a $26,000 overnight yacht trip when they hit a team goal.

She says that since making the changes, her employees are “happier,” and the business is turning a sizeable profit.

“I always thought if I have a team, I want everyone to enjoy coming into work,” Birdcage said.

“I have really high expectations with my team. We work really hard,” she continued. “Their value is not derived from how long they are sitting at their desk.”

She said her agency now touts a 98% client satisfaction rate.

“The morale and supportive culture is really, really good,” Birdcage bragged. “I like having a really open and honest family and building a safe space. It’s been incredible.”
