Inauguration of the new YCM building

At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.

“ Allow me to express a very sincere wish that the Yacht Club de Monaco fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests ”

— Prince Rainier III

To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment. The Yacht Club de Monaco’s philosophy is based on the need to perpetuate but also to pass on a heritage, inherited from our ancestors, to ensure that the Yacht Club remains a lively and progressive place.

Summer camps and activity days in and around Monaco

summer camps monaco

Your Monaco Life guide to all the amazing children’s summer camps and daytime activities in the Principality of Monaco and beyond.

The school holidays are almost upon us in Monaco. In a few short days, the kids will be “out for summer” until La Rentrée on 11th September. Here are some ideas that will keep your children busy and entertained this July and August.

The world of water

The Yacht Club de Monaco is running a jam-packed summer programme, with various camps for children aged between six and 17. “In, on and under the water” is the theme of the very diverse list of activities that will give kids a true taste of the sea and the adventures it can offer. Early reservations were reserved for members, but now the registration process has been opened up to all wanting to try out sailing and more at this iconic institution.

Kids can live out their Luca and Ariel dreams with the Académie Monégasque de la Mer’s two-months-worth of scuba diving, snorkelling and lifesaving workshops aboard the Pirates Of The Abyss catamaran. The price is €530 per week.

More at sea action can be found at the Société Nautique de Monaco , which is hosting a coastal rowing camp this summer for 10 to 15-year-olds. Various dates are available and the cost is €275 a week, including a daily lunch at the club’s restaurant.

Music, dance and circus arts

Mini acrobats from four and up can hone their circus skills at the Chapiteau de Fontvielle, the very home of the famous Monte-Carlo Circus Festival, and test out everything from the trapeze to aerial hoops and silks. Four weekly courses have been organised, but there are also flexi-options available for kids who want to do half-days. Click here for more information.

It’s gymnastics galore down at the Salles de Gymnastique Princesse Stéphanie, which will be holding two separate stages from 3 rd to 7 th July and 10 to 14 th July. The sessions will all take place between 10am and noon. Click here for more information.

For the highly dedicated dancers of Monaco, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo will be hosting several stages over the summer that also serve as auditions for those hoping to get into the Académie Princesse Grace the following school year. Students must be between 11 and 19 to apply. Click here to learn more.

The seven weeks of musical instruction on offer this summer, just up the road in Beausoleil, will be music to the ears of avid musicians. Click here for dates and prices.

Classic sports

Roca Team fans won’t believe their ears when they hear about the AS Monaco Basketball camp : on-court play with the captain of the team, Yakuba Ouattara. Two separate weeks are available in early July, but places are limited so get in touch with the organisers now if you want to secure a spot!

Tennis stars of the future will love the mixed sessions at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The morning “Tennis & Piscine” course is open to four to 14-year-olds and costs €223 for members of the prestigious clubs, while non-members will have to pay a little more. Beginner tennis classes for the youngest players, aged three to seven, will also be on offer from 3 rd to 11 th August for two hours in the afternoon. This costs €150 for a week of instruction for members or €192 for non-members. Click here for more information on both stages .

The Monte-Carlo Squash Racket Club will be hosting a number of different camps at the Stade Louis II for seven to 11-year-olds, including table tennis, badminton and, of course, squash. Call 06 63 60 01 68 for more information on dates and times. Reservations can be made directly at [email protected] .

Afternoon activities

It’s going to be a very busy summer over at the Centre de la Jeunesse Princesse Stéphanie (CJPS) on Avenue Papalins with an afternoon programme of activities on themes such as adventure, pirates, superheros and travel planned throughout July and August. The sessions are held from 2pm to 7pm on weekdays and are a very affordable €10 per day.

Outdoor adventures

The CJPS is also offering longer stays away for eight to 16-year-olds via its mountain summer camps in the Champsaur region. Tweens and teens can partake in everything from bike riding to treetops adventures and watersports while getting some of that much-appreciated independence from their parents. The camps are organised in collaboration with Monaco’s Department of Social Welfare and Social Services and may be part-financed for some families. The two-week trips cost €815 or €855 depending on the age of the child.

Similarly, but for a slightly different age group and in another mountainous location, La Boite de Jeux is organising a two-week-long stay in a dedicated chalet in the Orcières Valley near Gap for seven to 14-year-olds between 8 th and 22 nd July. Prices start at €700 for a camp that includes access to tonnes of activities, sports and experiences.

Further afield, there are many different summer camps and activity days being laid on by Nature Essentielle in the Alpes-Maritimes, from overnight camping trips to Pelagos-backed sea voyages and mountain adventures. Click here to discover the full list.

YCM Academy and more

Yacht Club de Monaco and youth activities

Let's find out how sailing activities are organised for young sailors at the Yacht Club de Monaco and in the Principality with an interview with Paolo Ghione, the former Technical Director of the Italian Sailing Federation, who has held two roles in Monaco for a number of years now: first as head of the YCM’s Competitive performance teams. The second, a more specialist role, as National Technical Director of the smaller Monaco Sailing Federation.

How are activities dedicated to young sailors organised at the YCM?

P.G: The gateway into the sport is what we call school sailing, voile scolaire in French. The children spend the whole school year divided into classes at the club, accompanied by their parents from primary school up to high school in a programme shared by the national education directorate and Monaco’s ministry of sport. We teach between 800 and 1,000 pupils per season, who normally enjoy a sailing bimester period. This means they get to have at least five or six sailing lessons. This is the first step.  The second step is the sailing school, organised every Wednesday throughout the school year. The third step is the step up from sailing school to sports school: this is a process that attracts those children who are slightly more interested in the sport, between the ages of 6 and 10, and this initiates them into a multidisciplinary course, in which the kids can practice single-handed, double-handed, even mixed activities, experiencing wing sailing, paddling, kayaking, depending on the weather conditions, which, in Monaco, are Mediterranean and therefore irregular when it comes to wind, so we tend to adapt to the conditions of each day.

Yacht Club de Monaco and youth activities

The last gateway is the summer camps. In the summer we organise six to seven weeks of events, limited to 50 children per week, with an activity we call ‘underwater, on the water and in the water’. It’s a lot of fun for them, it's a kind of summer camp, but very dynamic, with fun and motivating instructors. We teach about 300-400 students over the summer, and this also allows us to recruit more. This is definitely the baseline. After this comes sports school, which allows us to sort the more competitive groups, in classes such as the Optimist, into the categories A and B, always preceded by the much younger kids, who are very seafaring, for whom the activities are much less competitive. Then we move on to the Ilca categories, a boat that we've always followed closely, and we are also one of the few clubs in the world to provide J70s, of which we can offer five to young sailors who come out of the Ilca programme, and who want to continue with their studies, but also want to keep one foot in the club.

We have traditions that date back many many years, we have organised so many important events and are fortunate to see some truly top level crews often sailing in Monaco, who take our groups to the next level. These teams we put together are assigned a specific coach, with a training and racing programme that lasts practically 10 months a year. The fourth class we coach is the Smeralda 888s, which also compete in the Primo Cup. These are more or less 16-17 boats, with crews of 5-6 people, mini 12-metre America's Cup boats from the 1980s, on which we also let our young sailors race, with the same model of a coach and an year-round activities programme, with events that take place mainly on the Mediterranean. These are all club activities.

SLAM

Of course, as the principality is quite small, the club also has the right and eligibility to sign up young sailors from neighbouring municipalities located around Monaco for competitive activities. This creates a bit of an issue for us, because when these boys are 18 years old they are no longer eligible: after the World Youth Sailing World Championships we can't take them on for Senior level initiatives. This is why the Monaco Federation is taking the lead at this point with a targeted programme for athletes with a Monaco passport, who are few in number (4 or 5), but who are the product of the very first generation to benefit from the Monaco Sport Academy. Two of them are preparing for the Olympic selections in Hyeres (20th to 27th April) in the special regatta called Last Chance Race.

The Monaco Sport Academy

The Academy is an internal structure within the club that aims to accompany young sailors in a twofold project, i.e. balancing study, sports and of course the social life of a young teenager. We have tried over the years to build up a transversal staff with many skills available to young people to be activated according to the personality of each sailor. Everything from someone specialised in more advanced athletic preparation, recovery after an accident, physiotherapy to strengthen a particular muscle, a chiropractor, someone to help with dialogue; next we focus on sophrology, a discipline dedicated to mental preparation, actual mental preparation. A core base of these activities is especially useful for the younger generation so that they can learn to interact with adults in a context outside family roles or the purely sports-focused roles in the context of their coach. This support can come in the form of an open dialogue with their school, sharing in the planning phases and joining a project called Sport Elite here in Monaco, an excellent evolution of the Italian School Sport project, which allows for real adapted school schedules. I currently have three Monegasque athletes in this project who three days a week at half past six in the morning come for physical training in the first two bi-monthly periods of the year and then go to class at around half past nine to ten. In the following two bi-monthly periods (here, as you can tell, we work with a bi-monthly system), they can leave school earlier to benefit from the thermal wind in the afternoon. The Monaco Sport Academy, in a nutshell, means shifting a global concept of coaching with all the necessary skills. Everything that is normally done at the highest level of training shifted to an age group of 14 to 18 year-olds, especially in a small country like Monaco, in an attempt to still accompany young sailors and keep them connected to the club. There is also a university in Monaco with which we have a collaborative relationship aimed at moving this project forward.

Regattas organised by the YCM

The most historic regatta is the MONACO OPTIMIST TEAM RACE. The interest in this team race corresponds perfectly to one of the labels of our club, ‘Monaco, capital du yachting': combined with a team sporting event, we try to have as much representation of countries as possible. The event kicked off 11 years ago, where we tried to invite a great number of young sailors from twin or partnered clubs with the boats provided, and then give space to international ranking lists. The purpose of this regatta is to share universal Olympic values such as friendship, excellence and sharing. These are always interesting days, preceded normally in the second week of January by workshops in which we often invite team racing stars to make themselves available to young sailors in this discipline, a discipline that remains a special one, which young people enjoy a lot and which goes somewhat beyond the more classical competitive context.

Another event specifically dedicated to young sailors, an event in which we, in a way, were the first to organise anything of its kind, is the MONACO OPTIMIST ACADEMY. This is a coach race in which coaches can follow their athletes behind the fleets at lower speeds and can communicate directly with their athletes. This has only happened over the years in younger categories, as the older ones no longer need this type of coaching. We have experimented a bit, and seen that it is a very effective activity, in so much as the various coaches who also give information to different groups of boats, fill the kids’ heads with ideas and new situations they still think about 3-4 days after the event. The environment ashore is always fun, with games, parties, activities, nice dinners. This year we are launching into the European Team Race Optimist, an event we run that is based on a programme under the IODA, the International Optimist Association. Obviously, the particularity of having a club with so many top level boat owners, offers many opportunities within the Monaco Sport Academy where we can dedicate days of coaching to our young sailors, with particularly important workshops alongside Olympic champions and ocean sailors or America's Cup skippers, who are kind enough to be there for the kids, such as Grant Dalton (America's Cup), Teresa Zabel (double 470 Olympic medallist and currently on the European Commission for Sustainable Development) and many other names.

The ideal approach to introduce children to sailing?

I believe that the format we propose with our summer camps, i.e. weekly summer activities with multiple support options available depending on the weather conditions, is one of the best ways to introduce a child to sailing. Sailing is still a sport, a school of life, something that can be appreciated immediately, but it is normally best appreciated after achieving a sufficient technical level. So a summer-based approach balancing play, fun, and the sea; sessions alternating between sailing, kayaking, paddling, sailboard or other options, like giant paddles, combined with games in the water, which as games also become exercises to cast away any light fears that come with leaving the land behind you to explore the sea’s deep blue. At the club we have worked a lot on methodology and pedagogy over the past few years, and today we think we have a really good project in our hands, the 'Sea Adventure Camp', during short summer camps, which have enabled us over the years to greatly strengthen both the sailing school and our pre-competitive groups.

In Love with the Sea: Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Monaco’s unequivocal love for the Mediterranean has made it synonymous with yachting. With access to dozens of countries, cultures and histories at its doorstep, the Yacht Club de Monaco is a lasting and proud symbol of adventure, affluence, limitless possibility and the passionate bond forged between a sailer and the glittering depths of the open water. This year, the YCM is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a grand program of events which are within the frame of Monaco, Capital of  Advanced  Yachting approach, sure to make any wandering yachtsman or woman want to drop anchor in Port Hercules and enjoy the festivities.

Port constructed by ancient mythical hero… Hercules!

Port Hercules is one of the only deep-water ports along the entire French Riviera. Ancient Greeks and Romans used the port in 600BC. At the time, the port was dotted with altars to the mythical hero and demigod, Hercules. Texts by Roman Emperor Julian stated that Hercules himself constructed Monaco’s port and coastal road.

Monaco starts to become the epicentre of yachting over 160 years ago…

Because Prince Charles III wanted Monaco to be renowned for both yachting and innovation, he inspired the Principality’s first regattas in 1862. His son, Prince Albert I, inherited a passion for the sea and became a renowned navigator, explorer and pioneer of oceanography. In 1904, when road races were banned because they were deemed too dangerous, SBM launched the “Exhibition and International Motorboat Meeting”. Leading car manufacturers flocked to Monaco to test their new engines on water. Monaco was starting to become the centre of the boating world.

In 1953, Prince Rainier III, who was known for his passion for bringing people together, looked beyond the sporting aspect of yachting and established the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Prince saw the Club as a way to create friendships and bonds between people who love the sea through a rich variety of social events. Prince Rainier III immediately agreed to become the YCM’s president and, one year later, the Club began organizing meetings and international events, as well as scuba-diving and fishing adventures. All these events resulted in a 50% increase in boats frequenting Monaco’s harbour.

The next generations of sailors began getting formal training when the YCM set up its Sailing School inaugurated in 1970. Two years later, the Builder Prince encouraged boat-making genius Carlo Riva (who created the iconic mahogany Monte-Carlo Offshorer yachts) to build the first dry port.

The Yacht Club’s hi-tech Home

With the goal of sheltering the port from strong easterly winds, Prince Rainier III launched several studies in the 1970s, which culminated in a colossal, semi-floating harbour wall. Completed in 2002, the wall is 350 metres long, weighs 160,000 tonnes and has been praised for its inventive design. The project was completed with a breakwater, which formed the marina in front of Quai Louis II, now home to the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new clubhouse.

Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates 70th Anniversary

Completed in 2014, the hi-tech building looks like a liner docked on the Quai. The Club boasts 5,000 m 2 of interior space and 4,000 m 2 of terraces. The emblematic building was sustainably designed with solar panels, a sea water cooling system and uses natural light and ventilation. Domestic materials such as European oak were used for the terraces and recycled materials were used for the foundations. Local companies were employed for its construction. The building demonstrates the YCM’s profound commitment to the planet.

HSH Prince Albert II continued the work begun by his father by spearheading redevelopments which continue to make Port Hercules the most modern and practical marina on the Mediterranean, positioning Monaco as the Capital of Yachting. In 1984, Prince Albert II was appointed as President of the Yacht Club by his father. The first year of his presidency saw the launch of the Primo Cup and the Monaco-New York transatlantic race. The Monaco Classic Week — La Belle Classe was created in 1994.

La Belle Classe Academy

The YCM’s La Belle Classe Academy is dedicated to anyone involved in yachting, from captains and crew members to future owners. Opened in 2015, expert teachers in state-of-the-art facilities teach students about everything from basic safety training and navigation to pleasure boating and sustainability.

How to become a member of the Yacht Club

“To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment,” — YCM.

The Yacht Club de Monaco currently has over 2,500 members from 81 nationalities who all share a passion for the sea. To become a member, one needs to be introduced by two sponsors, who are both YCM society members. (Anyone who has been a society member for more than one year may propose one applicant per session.) Twice a year, Prince Albert II convenes a meeting of the Admissions Committee to examine all applications. New members are officially welcomed to the YCM with a cocktail party.

Packed program of events celebrate YCM’s anniversary all year-long

On International Women’s Day, the Yacht Club de Monaco announced the very first women-only regatta in Monaco, called ‘Woman Leading and Sailing’. The Pink Wave team, a large group of YCM sailors of all levels, were responsible for organizing the regatta. A dozen crews each with five-women battled it out aboard their J/70s for the first Woman Leading and Sailing Trophy between 25–26 March 2023.

10th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and the first YCM E-Boat Rally (3–8 July)

What better way to celebrate the future of yachting than by investigating alternative energy sources? The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge brings young engineers from colleges and universities around the world into contact with yachting industry players. The goal is to get creative by designing alternative propulsion systems, with everyone sharing information on open source. The first ever YCM E-Boat Rally will be held during this year’s event. A record number of electric boats is expected in Monaco’s harbour.

Making Moscow a city for runners, one step at a time

More than a dozen running clubs are operating in Moscow. Source: AP

More than a dozen running clubs are operating in Moscow. Source: AP

Over the last few years, the popularity of running in Moscow has been on the rise, although the city has still a long way to go before it becomes comfortable for runners.

“The popularity of running is undoubtedly rising,” said Ivan Vladimirov, a running enthusiast for nearly 40 years. “That’s in line with global trends, but also reflects the relative stability in our society.”

Rodion, a member of the Senezh running club agreed. “More and more people take on running.” He provided his nickname, Los (Moose), instead of his last name, saying “last names are not for the running life, running is still a territory of freedom.”

The first running clubs in the Russian capital, such as Fakel, date back to the 1970s. However, their membership was limited, and runners in Moscow’s streets or parks looked very out of place.

 Running across Lake Baikal

More: Running across Lake Baikal

The demise of communism in the early 1990s and the ensuing economic chaos did little to boost the popularity of running. But in the 2000s, as city parks began to get facelifts and young Russians took up the idea of living a healthy lifestyle along with other global fashions and trends, the situation began to change.

“Nearly in every neighborhood of the city, there is a large enough park where you can run,” said Vladimirov. “And over the last few years, the parks have been changing for the better.”

And although the number of runners in Moscow’s Gorky Park is still noticeable smaller than, say, in New York’s Central Park, it is still large enough to talk about running as a steadily growing trend.

“People’s interest in running has been on the rise,” said Alexandra Boyarskaya, head of the running club Nike Plus at Gorky Park. She suggested that one of the reasons was that ideas about running that were first spread in the United States back in the 1970s have finally made it to Russia, along with other ideas about sports and health.

For many, running is part of the sports and healthy-lifestyle activities that have recently gained in popularity, such as yoga and bicycle riding. But some people just try it as something new and like it enough to continue.

“Running is an option you could try,” Boyarskaya said. “You could eat an ice cream, you could take a bike ride, or you could run.”

What it takes for Moscow to become a ‘real city’

What it takes for Moscow to become a ‘real city’

According to Boyarskaya, the demographics of the several thousand people who showed up for her club’s training sessions last summer runs the gamut, although most of them are young people between 17 and 27. Expats also show up, she added.

Another factor that has helped to raise interest in running was activities by large companies, especially manufactures of sports clothes and equipment, that promote running as a lifestyle rather than just purely a sport. Nike has sponsored a series of races in Moscow since 2011.

Responding to the overall surge of interest in running, new clubs have begun to pop up around the city in addition to those that have survived since the Soviet era.

Currently, more than a dozen running clubs are operating in Moscow. But many people show up for running classes to get a basic knowledge of techniques, stretches and other preparatory exercises and then go on run on their own rather than run regularly with a club.

This summer, the city’s race calendar has been full with races nearly every weekend. The organizers of the Moscow Marathon sponsored a series of 5k and 10k races, including a Night Run on the longest day of the year and a Color Run in August. Another group organized two half-marathons – one in mid-May and one in early August.

The capital’s most important running event this year is the Moscow Marathon, which will be held Sept. 15.

However, runners in Moscow still face many challenges. While Gorky Park is almost as comfortable for runners as parks in major Western cities, other parks may not appear that safe and convenient. Moscow has serious problems with street dogs in addition to insufficient lighting at night and poor quality of running paths.

Syria

“Moscow isn’t very convenient for runners,” Los said. “There is no cult of running. In parks, despite ‘no dogs’ signs, there are more dogs than people. Authorities are doing nothing to improve the situation, and the All-Russian Federation of Track and Field Sports has distanced itself from these issues.”

Boyarskaya agreed, saying “The city isn’t convenient for running just as it isn’t convenient for living,” adding that some people, especially women, don’t feel safe running in parks, while people who run on the streets have to face rude drivers and ice on the sidewalks much of the year.

On the bright side, however, the huge size of Moscow creates an extra advantage for runners preferring the streets. “Some runners complain that running is boring. But in Moscow, you can always find a new route,” Boyarskaya concluded.
