MAN OF STEEL Yacht – Premier $150 M Superyacht

Measuring 86 meters, she is one of the world’s largest yachts.

Previously known as SEVEN SEAS, the name was inspired by the fact Spielberg had seven children. He owned the vessel from her delivery in 2010 through to 2021.

The interior of the MAN OF STEEL yacht includes a fully equipped gym, a spa, a beach club, a movie theatre, a beauty salon, a dance floor, and of course, a glass elevator that connects the different levels of the yacht. 

The gym is arguably one of the most impressive parts of this superyacht as it has floor-to-ceiling windows providing great views from one of the upper decks of the vessel.

This allows guests to have a beautiful view of not only the pool below but also the breathtaking scenery this yacht might pass when underway.

The private owners’ deck offers a fantastic state-of-the-art master bedroom with its own dressing room as well as an attached office or study. This suite includes its own private deck area with a sizable jacuzzi perfect for relaxing and drinking a glass of wine under starry skies. 

The six additional luxurious suites can accommodate 12 additional guests allowing the MAN OF STEEL to welcome up to 14 guests in total who are tended to by 23 crew members. The MAN OF STEEL interior was designed by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen and is equipped with exquisite furniture made of walnut, teak, and rosewood, accented with natural materials and fabrics.

The design of the yacht interior is simple yet classy, with clean and minimalist spaces. Wooden furnishings can be found in all parts of the vessel, although the interior is not as opulently furnished and decorated as other superyachts in its price category.

Nuvolari & Lenard is a renowned design duo that specializes in traditional yacht design for vessels between 25 and 185 meters in length. Their aim is to redefine beauty while keeping classical elements in mind.

In collaboration with the American interior designer Molly Isaksen, they created a one-of-a-kind fusion of naval architecture, incorporating contemporary and traditional elements in the interior of this beautiful vessel. The MAN OF STEEL offers a 250 square feet semi-covered sundeck, which is located adjacent to the main salon that provides enough space for larger events and celebrations aboard the vessel. A crew of 23 members of staff offers an excellent 5-star service and fulfills every possible wish of the guests onboard the MAN OF STEEL superyacht.

With excellent fine dining capabilities and luxurious amenities, this yacht is ideal for private ownership as well as high-end charter service.

Yacht specifications

The MAN OF STEEL has a length of 86 meters (282.15 ft) with a beam of 14.2 meters (46.6 ft) and a draft of 3.91 meters (13 ft)​​.

She was built by Oceana in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands using mainly steel and aluminum which is their specialty. MAN OF STEEL was completed and delivered to Steven Spielberg in 2010. The yacht has her main port in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, under whose flag she sails and she has been spotted as far south as the port of Puerto Escondido . With a weight of 2.658 tons and an output of 6,984 kW (9,496 hp), the MAN OF STEEL can reach top speeds of 20 knots.

Her maximum range lies at 4,750 nautical miles, which is respectable considering her size.

Yacht exterior

Designed by Azure Naval Architects and styled by Nuvolari & Lenard, the MAN OF STEEL yacht combines exceptional craftsmanship with unique outlines. The hull of the ship is set in an elegant dark blue, while the upper decks were left in the traditional brilliant white that many yachts bear. On the aft deck, you will find an impressive infinity pool with an incredible 4.6 meter (15 ft) glass wall, which doubles as a movie screen if required. The aft has another slightly smaller pool as well as a sizable deck with comfortable seating. This deck can be used as a helipad for smaller aircraft allowing guests to arrive in style. When this area isn’t needed for landing purposes, it can be covered completely by large awnings providing additional shade to guests.

Toys and equipment

A yacht this size naturally comes with lots of toys and equipment to entertain the guests onboard.

The MAN OF STEEL carries four jet skis, several sea bobs, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, and much more. 

The two tenders onboard the vessel are always ready to take the guests to the mainland or to the nearest secluded beach.

Spielberg purchased them from Hodgdon Yachts, a shipyard based in Maine in the United States after MAN OF STEEL was delivered in 2010.

The larger of the two tenders, the Limo, has space for twelve people with luxurious leather upholstery, flatscreen television, and air conditioning.

When the weather is nice, the roof of the tender can be lifted and opened using hydraulics.

Additional information

In 2013 MAN OF STEEL was overhauled and refitted by Amico & Co, a well-known superyacht repair and design company.

The shipyard is based in Genoa, Italy, and has a 60,000 m² dock and operating area where work on both smaller and larger vessels can be carried out.

Where to Register Your Yacht Offshore: the Ultimate Guide

For the person who has successfully opened an offshore bank account , got a second passport and is living the lifestyle of their dreams traveling the world, the time has come to move on to the next level of flag theory.  This new level is one where the focus shifts from acquisitions that are largely for diversification purposes toward purchases meant purely to improve your lifestyle – like boating.

For many who reach this stage, the next step is to combine travel and leisure by investing in the purchase of a yacht.

Unlike buying a new car – or even a house – buying a yacht is an investment of an international nature, and deciding upon the best country for yacht registration is a decision for which you need professional advice so you do not expose your assets to unnecessary taxes and liabilities. If you go into the process uneducated, your exciting new purchase might just become nothing more than a hole in the water into which you pour unnecessary amounts of money.

As with other international strategies, the country in which you register your yacht can have an enormous effect on the amount of money you will be able to save, as well as your freedom of travel. Some countries keep you from freely traveling to other jurisdictions, others charge high tax percentages or registration fees, and others do none of those things.

Choose Your Flag Wisely

When buying a yacht,  the choice of yacht flags is one of the most important decisions you have to make because it can have a direct effect on your privacy, taxes, and your exposure to liability. Just as you would create a corporate structure to protect your other assets, you should do the same when it comes to yacht registration.

For this reason, many boat owners opt to register their yacht in places like the Cayman Islands to avoid the onerous taxes and regulations of the United States and other western governments. Panama , with its favorable registration policies, is the largest ship registry in the world  with over 9,000 ships flying its flag.

However, it’s also very important to do your due diligence in selecting a country for yacht registration by working with a professional. Once your vessel is registered in a country, all of the country’s laws will apply to your boat. Many countries that have attractive tax structures have other issues that you’ll want to avoid, such as laws that require you to hire a crew completely composed of nationals from that country.

You will also want to register your yacht in a country that is well respected by the US and the EU. If you choose a country with a bad reputation, it can limit where you are allowed to travel, or at the very least, make you subject to more detentions and inspections.

The flag state has the responsibility to enforce regulations over vessels registered under its flag, so yacht registration under countries on the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (Paris MoU) on Port State Control’s black or gray list will come under more scrutiny in inspections. Because of this, a large majority of yachts are flagged in British Overseas Territories, known as the ‘Red Ensign Group’ — including Bermuda, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man.

These countries have acceptable safety regulations for travel in EU countries, while also having more attractive tax structures than the UK. In fact, company tax is set at 0% in the Channel Islands , the Isle of Man, the Cayman Islands, and Bermuda .

This is particularly useful for those who wish to spend time in European Union waters, as vessels owned or used by EU residents are subject to the EU’s Value Added Tax (VAT). Private yacht registration with a non-EU flag allows an owner to operate under a “temporary importation structure” which allows for 18 months free of these taxes or customs duties. After the 18 months are over, the boat owner can re-apply for this status.

Bearing this in mind, let’s take a look at some of my favorite countries for yacht registration.

1.The Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry is a favorite among people who own both pleasure and commercial yachts worldwide. This ship registry has been at the Port of George Town, Cayman Islands since 1903. There are two other ports in the Cayman Islands as well: The Creek in Canyon Brac and Bloody Bay in Little Cayman.

The Merchant Shipping Law, which was revised in 2016, is the governing legislation for all boats registered in the Cayman Islands. The law offers many different types of yacht registration, including full registration, interim registration, provisional registration, a ship under construction registration, and demise charter/bareboat registration. An owner who is having a vessel built might find this convenient so he or she can register it as a boat under construction and then change to full yacht registration later.

As I mentioned above, the Cayman Islands is a part of the Red Ensign Group. This means that getting your yacht registration in the Cayman Islands flags your vessels as a British Ship, granting it protection by the British Royal Navy.

Because time is crucial for so many people, the Cayman Islands Ship Registry (CISR) can also expedite the registration process for those who need to be registered immediately if they pay their expedition fee. In addition, the CISR has representative offices in Fort Lauderdale, London, Cannes, Athens, Tokyo, and Singapore where you can have ship registry certificates issued immediately if needed.

Yachts that are registered with the Cayman Islands as pleasure yachts and are not engaged in trade are granted a License to Cruise the water of the United States which will allow them to enter, depart, and cruise within U.S. waters. These vessels will only need to report to U.S. customs when entering the country or changing customs districts.

Assuming you meet all of the required qualifications, there are no restrictions or rules concerning the nationality of the master or the crew of your ship.   In addition to the Cayman Islands being a tax neutral environment, the jurisdiction provides vessel owners with banking facilities and directorship services.

Overall, vessels registered in the Cayman Islands benefit from all the privileges of the British flag, while simultaneously having the tax-free and confidentiality perks of the Cayman Islands.

2. The Netherlands

Many people consider Holland to be an ideal location for yacht registration because the country is flexible and straightforward, whereas most other European countries follow stricter rules and regulations. The registration process is fast compared to that of other countries and requirements are minimal.

To register under the Dutch flag, the process is easiest if you are either an EU citizen, Swiss, Norwegian, or own a company registered in the EU.

One of the main advantages of the Netherlands is that you can be registered under the Dutch flag in as little as three days. That is why Holland is typically preferred over countries like Italy, France, and Spain where there is a longboat registration process in addition to high registration fees. A lot of yacht owners solve this problem by registering under the Dutch flag. Taxes and registration requirements in the Netherlands are minimal, allowing the whole process to be completed in three days, assuming you meet the necessary criteria.

Boat owners do not have to be of Dutch nationality, nor do they have to have a residence in the country. The only documents you must have are an ID card or passport and you must provide proof of ownership of your boat. Because so little documentation is needed, renewing your yacht registration is also a fairly simple process.

The process is easiest, however, for people who are Dutch, Swiss, Norwegian or have a company based in the EU. If you are not Dutch, Swiss, or Norwegian, and if you do not have a company registered in the EU, you can still register by paying a fee to have a United Kingdom Ltd. set up in your name.

The Ltd. will cost you 349 EUR upfront and 249 EUR every year after that. Once the Ltd. is set up, you’ll receive your registration within three to five days. The documentation needed is still the same. It only costs about 299 EUR for yacht registration in Holland if you are an EU citizen. It costs 648 EUR for non-EU citizens and your registration license can be delivered overnight anywhere in the world. Those prices include everything from the taxes to the mandatory Dutch address and all the costs for shipping and consultation.

There is also no requirement to have your boat inspected, making the vessel documentation process even simpler.

 Types of yacht registration under the Dutch flag:

     1.  Light registration

Light yacht registration is for people who want fast and easy registration for navigating EU waters. With light registration, you can only sail European Union waters and the length of your yacht may not exceed 24m.

    2.  Global registration

Global yacht registration is for yachts that will navigate outside of European Union waters, sail worldwide, or be engaged in commercial chartering. People with Global registration can sail worldwide. Global registration is also available to Swiss or Norwegian persons regardless of whether or not they have a company in the EU.

 3. The Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands ship registry was formed in 1988. In 2001, it was expanded to allow those with commercial and private yachts to register as well, which has made the Marshall Islands a popular place to register over the last sixteen years.

The jurisdiction has also gained a lot of recognition over the years by having regional offices in major maritime cities around the world, allowing them to provide same day service to anyone, regardless of the location or time zone in which they reside.

The Marshall Islands Registry is the third-largest in the world and you can register under a one or three-year program.

You must be a Marshall Islands citizen, national, or qualified foreign maritime entity to register in the Marshall Islands. The terms “citizen” and “national” refer to Marshall Islands corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, and associations of individuals. (You can easily complete the process to have a Marshall Islands company registered in your name so you can register your ship there.)

Assuming you complete all the necessary documents and meet all requirements, you can have your ship registered within 24 hours; you can also register your yacht as a ‘ship under construction’ if needed. You can obtain a U.S. cruising permit as a boat registered in the Marshall Islands and commercially compliant yachts can charter in Europe. In other words, you are not confined to the waters of the Marshall Islands alone, which is convenient for those who want to see more of the world.

As long as you meet proper flag requirements, yachts measuring 18m or longer that weigh less than 500 gross tons can be chartered out for up to 84 days as a private yacht limited charter (PYLC).

In addition to being white-listed under Paris and Tokyo’s MoUs, the Marshall Islands also meets the flag criteria for a low-risk ship under the Paris New Inspection Regime. Additionally, the Marshall Islands has been a part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Qualship 21 roster for 11 consecutive years.

The Marshall Islands Registry is low tax and respected worldwide; the country is a presidential republic in free association with the United States and enjoys similar benefits to its British Overseas Territory counterparts making it a great jurisdiction for yacht registration.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. The country’s ship registry ranks 10th in the world with a gross tonnage of over 21 million pounds.

A ship can be registered in Cyprus if more than 50% of the shares of the registering company are owned by a Cypriot or if your company is registered in the Republic of Cyprus. An offshore company can also be registered in Cyprus if the company’s control is in the hands of Cypriots.

The Republic of Cyprus can easily register your company under their flag so you can register your yacht there. The costs of yacht registration and management are the lowest in Europe , making the jurisdiction an ideal, convenient place for many owners to register their ship.

There are many tax benefits that come with yacht registration under the Cyprus flag. An owner whose ship is registered in Cyprus is fully exempt from income taxes from operations in international waters. Additionally, no tax is payable for the wages of the crew that operates in international waters. No tax is payable on any dividend received from a shipping company in Cyprus.

Cyprus has maritime offices around the world, allowing them to work with anyone anywhere at any time. Some of their main offices are located in New York, London, Rotterdam, Piraeus, Brussels, and Hamburg. Upon registering in one of these offices, you will have the benefits of flying an EU flag, which is respected worldwide. According to the  EU registry, “Sailing under EU flags demonstrates strength and represents a strong reputation.”

Like some of the other countries I have mentioned, Cyprus has been white-listed among the Paris and Tokyo MoUs, meaning it is a high-quality flag with low risk compared to many other countries who have been gray or black-listed.

It should also be noted that Cyprus is excluded from the “list of targeted flag states,” which is kept by the U.S. Coast Guard. Cyprus’s absence from the list means that inspections of the yacht with a Cypriot flag are kept to a minimum and they will experience no unnecessary delays when entering and leaving ports.

Types of yacht registration:

Cyprus offers three types of registration, including provisional registration, permanent registration, and parallel (bareboat) registration.

       1. Provisional remains in effect for 6 months; after expiration, it can only be renewed once more for 3 more months.

       2. Permanent Yacht Registration  goes into effect 6 to 9 months from the date your yacht was provisionally registered.

      3. For Parallel / Bareboat Registration  your ship must hoist the Cyprus flag and “Limassol” must be marked as your port of registry. Parallel-in lasts for two years and is renewable. For parallel-out registration, your ship must hoist the foreign flag rather than the Cyprus flag and your port of registry must be the port of the foreign country. Parallel-out lasts for three years and is also renewable.

Liberia is the oldest democracy in Africa and one of the first offshore, zero tax jurisdictions. The Liberian ship registry is a favorite among owners of large vessels; the country has the second-largest registry in the world and makes up 12% of registered ships worldwide.

One of the perks of The Liberian Yacht Registration is that it is open to any ship-owner in the world and there are absolutely no restrictions on the nationality of your crew or country of construction. This makes Liberia appealing to many ship-owners who either cannot register somewhere because of their nationality or can only register by paying an additional fee.

Liberia has been white-listed on the Paris and Tokyo MoUs and has also been approved by the International Maritime Organization AND the U.S. Coast Guard. This, combined with the country’s other features, means that the Liberian Registry is known as “the world’s largest quality registry, renowned for excellence, efficiency, safety and innovative service”.

The following types of vessels can be registered in Liberia:

Vessels under construction, new buildings, vessels being transferred from other flags, offshore vessels, vessels in lay-up, and vessels involved in international, coastal, or domestic trading. You may also have a dual flag if your ship is bareboat registered.

The Liberian Registry is owned and operated by the United States. Additionally, service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making things very convenient for those wishing to do yacht registration under the Liberian flag. There are over 400 nautical inspectors, so there is always someone available to attend to vessels.

Vessels registered in Liberia are taxed with a fixed fee, which   depends on the tonnage of your ship. The tax is applied yearly, so there should be no surprises. However, t here are no taxes on operations and your profits are not assessed.

The Liberian flag is accepted in many EU countries — the United Kingdom, Germany, and Holland are only a few countries in the European Union that accept the Liberian flag. In addition, Liberia is highly rated for safety and accident prevention, which makes this country even more attractive for your yacht registration.

Liberia is recognized every year for having high standards. The country has an above-average performance in safety and accident prevention as well as in independent statistical reports. Liberia also has a network of 100 security inspectors to inspect ships when necessary; this is something that was implemented post-9/11.

According to information provided by the Liberian Registry website, “The “Maritime Services Award” is for exceptional achievement or contribution to any service sector of the America’s maritime industry by a company, individual, or organization. According to Lloyd’s List criteria for this award, “The winner must be able to demonstrate how they have set themselves apart, going above and beyond best practice to offer the shipping industry something exceptional.”

The Maltese ship registry is the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world; it is one of the most popular countries in the world for pleasure yacht registration. The country has EU compliant legislation, clear laws relating to yacht mortgages, low registration costs and is well respected across the globe.

Malta became a member of the European Union in 2004, so yacht registration here comes with the perks of sailing an EU flag, including protection by the British Royal Navy. Like the other countries I’ve mentioned, Malta has been white-listed, providing ship-owners with a sense of security when you go through the yacht registration process under the Maltese flag.

If you’re an EU, EEA, or Swiss national, you can hold your vessel in your personal capacity. However, if you’re a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen you must hold your yacht through a Maltese or foreign company.

When it comes to taxes, it is important to note that companies operating commercial yachts out of Malta are exempt from income tax on any income generated by the operation of their yachts. They are also exempt from any VAT tax on the high seas. What   sets Malta apart from many other countries besides tax policy is that there are no restrictions on the nationality of the master, officers, or crew of your ship.

Another perk that Malta shares with Liberia is that there is round-the-clock service, so you can feel safe and secure registering in the country. And, as long as you meet all flag requirements, any type of vessel can be registered — that means pleasure yachts, oil rigs, vessels under construction, and anything in between.

W hen it comes to the age or trading, boats between 10 and 15 years must pass inspection by an authorized inspector within one month of provisional registration and ships over 15 years old must pass inspection before being provisionally registered.

7. The British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands is the latest country to join the Red Ensign Group (2014). Now, the British Virgin Islands can register any type of ship and any size. Not only that, yacht registration under the BVI flag grants access to all the ports in the world. There are restrictions with almost all other registries when it comes to this, so the fact that a BVI flag gives you access anywhere sets the country far apart from the rest.

Another advantage that makes the jurisdiction one of the most attractive is that the British Virgin Islands is tax neutral. The islands are outside the scope of the EU value added tax (VAT) laws, meaning that there is no sales tax when purchasing goods or services.

As is the case with the Cayman Islands and Malta, the Red Ensign Group flag grants protection by the British Royal Navy to those vessels registered under the British Virgin Islands flag. Similar to the other countries listed, you can register under the BVI flag even if you are not a citizen and even if you do not own a company there; you will need to register a company in the BVI to do so, but this can be completed in a matter of hours.

When it comes to the registration process, it usually takes two to six months, meaning that it is not as short as some of the other countries, but it’s still not too terribly long.

As I have mentioned in previous articles, the British Virgin Islands has one of the most stable governments and economies in the world, which makes ship owners who register there feel very safe and secure when compared to other countries who have more enemies or corruption within the government.

Panama  is not only a popular place when it comes to offshore banking or getting a second passport, it also holds the largest ship registry in the world, having over 9,000 ships registered under the country’s flag.

Most countries require a minimum amount of weight, but Panama does not. The only exception to this rule is if your ship is older than 20 years, requiring that the ship is inspected in order to be registered.

There is usually some downtime when someone transfers their ship from one flag to another, but that is not the case when you are transferring to Panama. Panama has a very simple transferring process; for example, numerous other countries make you dry dock for inspection and Panama does not. Because their process is so easy, it eliminates the concern that ship and business owners have concerning downtime.

The good news for all the shipping companies, ship owners, and merchant shipping companies is that you can have dual ship registry in Panama, but if you were registered in the other country first, you must have consent from that country to register in Panama, too.

Instead of taking your ship’s size or tonnage into consideration, Panama charges a flat yacht registration fee to keep things simple. If you are not a Panamanian or an owner of a Panamanian business, you’ll pay a flat fee of $1,500 to register your yacht. If you are Panamanian, it costs $1,000 to register your yacht. Once you are registered, you will have access to Panama’s round-the-clock service.

Additionally, once you are assigned provisional yacht registration, you have six months to provide the proper vessel documentation to transfer your provisional yacht registration to permanent registration. Your yacht registration certificate is valid for two years and renewal costs are low.

Many countries require yacht owners to pay taxes when they register their ship, but Panama does not. There are also no taxes on profit that is made through international trade. You do not have to pay taxes on wages for your crew members either. The main reason people choose to register in Panama is this lack of taxes. When registering in Panama, people are legally reducing tax costs and that would not be the case if they were to register in many other jurisdictions.

There is no one best ship registry in the world, but there are many you can choose from to keep your investment safe. Finding the right one for you will depend on what you value when it comes to naval protection, taxes, privacy, and ease of travel.

George Town is the capital city of Grand Cayman and serves as the primary port of entry for ships heading to the island. Known as a tender port, this means that instead of directly docking at the terminal, tender boats will ferry you from the cruise ship to the terminal.

George Town and Grand Cayman are fascinating places to explore on a cruise day in port. This article provides comprehensive information about George Town’s port, along with recommendations for shore excursions and dining options.

Grand Cayman is a tender port, meaning that cruise ships remain anchored in a large bay in front of George Town. Passengers are then transported to the terminals by double-decked tender boats, typically owned either locally or provided by the cruise ship.

Make sure to allocate some additional time for your return trip to the cruise ship, as long lines for the tender boats are common. These queues can cause delays in getting back to the ship. To avoid any last-minute rush and prolonged waits, consider starting your return to the ship a bit earlier than usual, compared to when at a docked port.

The George Town cruise port has three terminals: Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, North Terminal, and South Terminal. These terminals are within walking distance to each other, and are only a short walk away from most George Town attractions. Some of the cruise lines that dock at Grand Cayman include Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Disney, and Marella UK.

When cruising to Grand Cayman, you’ll probably arrive at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, a spacious open area featuring tour booths, taxis, and various facilities. Nearby, you’ll also find places to eat and drink, such as Snappers, Island Squeeze, and Tortuga Rum Co. 

If other cruise ships are already anchored, you may find yourself at either the North or South Terminal. Both of these terminals, situated along Harbour Dr, feature a small sheltered area for waiting and offer plenty of places to shop and eat close by. 

About George Town

George Town is the capital city of the Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea. It is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches, duty-free shopping, vibrant restaurant scene, and year-round tropical weather . Welcoming an impressive 1.7 million cruise passengers each year, the city ranks among the top Caribbean cruise destinations.

George Town was first settled in around 1700 and eventually became the capital of the Cayman Islands in 1831. Originally, the city was known as ‘Hogsties’ due to its many pig enclosures, and even now, the waterfront harbor is known as Hog Sty Bay. George Town became the capital of the Cayman Islands due to the exceptional quality of its natural harbor, with deep waters close to the shoreline.

Today, George Town is a vibrant capital city with a population of over 40 thousand people. It even has its own airport, Owen Roberts International Airport, with direct flights from across the US. The city’s economy largely relies on its busy finance sector, which is home to 40 of the top 50 global banks and over 600 banking companies.

How to Get Around George Town

Walking is an excellent way to explore George Town, thanks to its small size and the close proximity of its key attractions. Additionally, George Town is a very safe city, with a significantly lower crime rate compared to other Caribbean destinations.

Public buses are a quick and easy way to get around George Town. Grand Cayman itself has a comprehensive bus system with 11 routes, covering major spots like Seven Mile Beach, Hell, and Rum Point. The buses operate daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and until 1 a.m. on Fridays. 

The buses are small vans and can accommodate about 15 people. Safety-wise, there’s no need to worry—the drivers are friendly and ensure the ride is safe. You’ll find the main bus depot on Edward St, right beside Heroes Square. The bus depot is only a few minutes’ walk from the cruise port in George Town.

If you plan to explore attractions located at a distance from the port, taxis are an ideal choice. You’ll find taxis around the cruise terminals and in George Town, ready to transport cruise passengers. Keep in mind that taxis are more expensive than buses.

Renting a car is a great, cost-friendly transportation alternative to taxis or public buses. Car rentals provide many advantages over taxis. These include the ability to travel on your own schedule and reach destinations not easily accessible by taxis or buses.

It’s important to note that the minimum age for renting a car in Grand Cayman is 21. Since Grand Cayman is a British Territory, they drive on the left-hand side of the road. In addition, the maximum speed limit is around 40 mph (64 km/h).

What to do in George Town Near the Cruise Port 

After arriving in George Town, you’ll notice that the city’s main attractions are conveniently situated within walking distance of the cruise port. However, some shore excursions, such as Pageant Beach and The National Gallery, might require taking a taxi.

When exiting the Royal Watler Terminal, you will find yourself near the Ft. George Ruins, one of the city’s most interesting sites. From there, you have the choice to turn right onto Harbour Dr, where you can explore various malls, or head north along Fort St towards Heroes Square. The North and South Terminals are situated along Harbour Dr, where you’ll find popular spots such as the Island Plaza, Bayshore Mall, and the Cayman Islands National Museum.

Heroe’s Square

Heroe’s Square serves as a tribute to the Caymanians who have devoted their lives to improving the Cayman Islands. The spot is a good place for a calm break and perfect for history buffs who want to learn more about the islands. Within the square, there are plenty of memorials and statues that illustrate the island’s rich history. You’ll find Heroe’s Square in the middle of Fort St, which is a three minute walk from the cruise port.

Built in 2003, the square features a ‘Wall of Honor’ that highlights the names of the 500 most distinguished Caymanians. Also notable is the ‘Steps to Equality’ statue, commemorating the 24 women who championed voting rights in the 1948 election. The central feature of the park is a fountain surrounded by palm trees, creating an ideal spot for capturing memorable photos of your visit.

1919 Peace Memorial

If you’re stopping by Heroe’s Square, take a moment to visit the 1919 Peace Memorial located just across the road. Constructed in 1926, the building pays tribute to those who lost their lives in World War 1. You’ll also find a small plaque commemorating the 60th anniversary of the island’s first constitution. The building, painted in white, resembles a typical house from the time and has a small clock tower just outside.

George Town Public Library

Located right across from Heroe’s Square, the George Town Public Library is a great place to stop by if you need a little peace and quiet. With a large collection of books spanning three floors, it holds the title of the largest library on the island. The library is clean and the staff are friendly, with free Wi-Fi available as well. Additionally, there is a designated children’s section and public computer access.

The George Town Public Library holds historical significance, with the old front-facing building dating back to 1939. The original white-painted building showcases the classical Caribbean architecture of its time. The newer three-story building, known as the Maples Wing, was constructed in 2009. 

Ft. George Ruins

If you’re interested in the history of the Cayman Islands, a visit to the Ft. George Ruins is a must. Located right near the cruise port along Harbour Drive, these remnants were once part of Fort George, a colonial-era fort constructed in 1790.

The original purpose of Ft. George was to defend Grand Cayman from Spanish marauders from Cuba. During World War II, it was used extensively to track German submarines. Now, all that remains are a couple of cannons and a lookout house used during World War II. You’ll also find some vibrant murals depicting the history of the fort.

Elmslie Memorial United Church

At the heart of the George Town waterfront, you’ll find Elmslie Memorial United Church—an active Presbyterian church that dates back to 1920. The church is known for its distinctive architecture, with a roof that mimics an inverted ship hull. Inside, you’ll find mahogany arches salvaged from shipwrecks scattered across the Cayman Islands. 

The church’s colonial-style architecture is beautifully showcased by its white-washed, brick exterior and vibrant stained glass windows. Additionally, the church has a graveyard and several plaques that honor the lives of individuals who lost their lives at sea and in wartime.

Cayman Islands National Museum

The Cayman Islands National Museum is the perfect place to learn about the colorful history of George Town and the Cayman Islands. Situated just opposite the South Terminal, it’s an ideal spot to unwind following a day of shopping in George Town.

The museum is located within the historic Old Courts Building, which has origins dating back to the 1830s. With a collection of more than 8,000 artifacts, the museum is a treasure trove of historical wonders.

Guy Harvey’s Gallery & Shoppe

Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking to pass some time, Guy Harvey’s Gallery is definitely worth a visit. Located right next to Bayshore Mall, the two story gallery showcases the world renowned-works of Guy Harvey. Guy’s vivid and detailed artworks revolve around themes of marine life, featuring marlins, sailfish, turtles, and sharks.

On the first floor, you’ll mostly find souvenirs such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, and necklaces, while the upper level houses a comprehensive collection of Guy’s artistic works, spanning photography, prints, paintings, and sculptures.

After you’ve spent some time at the gallery, savor a meal at Guy Harvey’s Boathouse Grill, a fantastic seafood restaurant with scenic views of the ocean. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the stunning George Town harbor. Guy’s stunning works of art decorate the restaurant’s interior, creating a pleasant atmosphere.

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

Explore the lively local art scene at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. The first floor presents changing art exhibitions from global artists, while the second floor highlights the rich landscape of Caymanian and Caribbean art. The gallery is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) from the cruise port in George Town, so you’ll probably need to travel by taxi.

Despite its modest size, the gallery has a wide range of art pieces that are diverse and captivating. It’s free of charge and usually quiet, providing a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of George Town. Outside, you’ll also find a garden featuring additional minimalist works.

Pageant Beach

Pageant Beach, located 0.9 miles (1.5 km) from the cruise port, is a small beach that’s worth visiting if you have limited time. The shore runs alongside the harbor, providing views of cruise ships tendered at the George Town cruise port. 

On the beach, you’ll find plenty of small palm trees and even the occasional iguana. The water is crystal clear, and the sand is mostly soft, though it becomes rockier near the sea. Right next to the beach is The Wharf Restaurant & Bar, a fantastic spot for a quick snack.

Shopping in George Town Near the Cruise Port 

George Town offers a lively shopping experience, with a variety of conveniently located stores near the cruise port. The two most popular shopping hubs near the port are The Island Plaza and Bayshore Mall. You will find there a wide range of international and local shops, offering everything from clothing and jewelry to local souvenirs, art, and crafts.

If you’re looking for a more genuine shopping experience, make your way to the Cayman Craft Market, which is only a three minute walk from the port. At the market, you’ll find local vendors selling a wide range of products crafted from local materials.

The Island Plaza

If you’re in the mood for a bit of shopping after your cruise ship docks, consider visiting The Island Plaza. Located right next to the cruise port along Harbour Drive, the mall is home to 15 tax- and duty-free shops. Some of the shops you’ll find here include PANDORA, Cartier Boutique, Churchill’s Cigars, and Blackbeard’s Liquors. After you’re done shopping, have a small drink break at Margaritaville or treat yourself to some ice cream at Gelato & Co.

Bayshore Mall

Seafood is commonly found on restaurant menus, largely influenced by the island’s coastal location and thriving fishing scene.

Gelato & Co.

Gelato & Co is an excellent place to stop by and enjoy some authentic Italian gelato. Crafted entirely by hand, the gelato comes in a diverse range of flavors, including mango, strawberry, coconut, and vanilla. You’ll find Gelato & Co at The Island Plaza, just a short three minute walk from the cruise pier in George Town. 

Aside from gelatos, Gelato & Co offers plenty of delightful pastries, including tiramisu, macarons, and cheesecakes. The menu also features strawberry and mango sorbets, along with a wide variety of coffee choices. Reviewers have also highlighted the pleasant, upbeat atmosphere and friendly staff.

Why is the cayman islands a preferred choice for yacht registration worldwide.

Just like with a vehicle, there is more to owning a yacht than just buying one. Once you purchase a yacht, it needs to be registered in order to travel between waters and enter or depart from ports. The Cayman Islands is a jurisdiction of choice for offshore vessel registration for many reasons, the most popular of which being the tax benefits . As a tax-neutral jurisdiction, yacht owners registered in the Cayman Islands can save thousands in fees related to taxes, registration, and VAT alone. The Cayman Islands also offers convenient ease of marine vessel access with three ports of registry and several marinas across the three islands.

It's name is I Dynasty and it is a 101-metre superyacht that has just anchored at the Port of Malaga and will remain there for the whole winter.

It's the first luxury vessel scheduled to spend the cooler months in the Marqués de Guadiaro basin, the reformed area in the city port for luxury craft and megayachts. The marina was designed and built several years ago to receive large vessels and provide them with the necessary services during the low season, such as high-power electrical connections.

The I Dynasty, with a crew of 30, is scheduled to remain in Malaga throughout the autumn and winter, until the spring of 2024, according to port sources.

Business opportunities

The megayacht will undergo maintenance throughout the winter, for which the concessionaire of the marina, IGY Málaga Marina, is looking for various suppliers in the province which specialise in various technical tasks.

Maintenance required may include sanding, hull painting, welding, electrical, mechanics, carpentry and plumbing. IGY Málaga Marina is creating a database of interested companies, for which they ask anyone interested to contact them directly.

The I Dynasty is a modern megayacht built in 2015 on behalf of Alijan Ibragimov, a billionaire from Kazakhstan. He is the co-founder of the multinational Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) and is involved in diversified natural resources such as mining, processing, energy and logistics. Its owner died in February 2021, reportedly due to Covid-19.

The vessel was built at the Kusch Yachts shipyard in Germany, with interior design by Massari Design. It can accommodate 22 guests in 11 luxury cabins; and 30 crew in another 15 cabins. Among its features, it has a 30-square-metre indoor swimming pool, which also serves as a dock for dinghies and pleasure boats.

The ship is powered by a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric propulsion system, with a top speed of 17 knots, and a cruising speed of 14 knots. It has a range of 6,500 nautical miles (about 12,000 kilometres), making it particularly suitable for journeys between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It is valued at around 200 million dollars, with maintenance costs estimated at 15 to 20 million dollars a year.

Where to register your superyacht?

Why so many island flags?

If you passed by a luxurious marina in the south of France or a Spanish island, you'll notice a lot of superyachts. But almost none of them are carrying a known flag on the jackstaff.

The flag you choose for your superyacht will have a direct impact on your taxes, privacy and the vessel's success as a business. There are no simple answers here, but there are some general rules.

Choosing an offshore state to register your superyacht makes sense especially if you will charter the vessel as a business. Registering your vessel with an offshore flag can bring many benefits: a lighter tax burden, confidentiality of ownership, better rates from banking and insurance companies. If you choose to use the yacht only for private enjoyment and not charter it, you might register the vessel in your home country.

In choosing the flag, a good starting point is the so-called White List as maintained by the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Paris MoU).

The Paris MoU is made of 27 participating maritime administrations and covers the waters of the European coastal states and the North Atlantic basin. The states are ranked on three lists: white list, grey list and black list. The states on the White List have demonstrated strong performance in safety, security and environmental standards. Flags on the Grey and Black Lists are deficient and vessel risk inspections and even detentions.

The favorite flags for the majority for superyacht owners are those of the British overseas territories, commonly known as the Red Ensign Group. Almost 80% of the yachts and superyachts are registered in the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar and Isle of Man.

Sailing under one of these flags provides protection of the British maritime law, commercial confidentiality and adherence to the Large Yacht Code (LYC)

The registry with the largest number of yachts is the Cayman Island Shipping Registry. The port of George Town is the homeport of the majority of superyachts.

Also part of the Red Ensing Group are Guernsey, Jersey, Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Falkland Islands, Montserrat, St. Helena and Turks & Caicos.

Out of the 13 members, only the UK and Gibraltar are EU-flags. Another popular flag with the superyacht owners is the one of the Pacific nation of Marshall Islands.

Off the Hook Yachts Acquires 300-Slip Marina in Georgetown Maryland  

The Acquisition 

Off the Hook Yachts is proud to announce the acquisition of Georgetown Yacht Basin (GYB) now rebranding under Georgetown Yacht Haven – a 300-boat slip full-service marina located on the Sassafras River in Georgetown, MD.  Off the Hook plans to restore the yacht basin to its former glory and reconnect with the local community in order to establish it as a household name in the area. 

As our founder is originally from Maryland, this will complement our current presence in the area, along with our MD sales team, which currently operates out of Bay Bridge Marina. The acquisition of the marina will allow us to expand on sales, service, and custom-built Nor-Tech Performance Boat sales in the region. Georgetown Yacht Haven has 300 slips, two paint sheds that can hold up to a 110-foot yacht, a 110-ton travel lift, a fuel dock, a swimming pool, bathhouses, and a complete ship store, along with many other amenities. GYH controls the largest travel lift in Northern Chesapeake Bay.

George Town Is a Changing

Change is everywhere. As sailors and cruisers change is something we are very used to. Changing countries, anchorages, and overall changing the way we choose to live life. One may argue that living on the water is such a drastic change of lifestyle than the norm. 

However, when change occurs in a sailing destination that people have been traveling to for years it’s a cause for distress. 

George Town Bahamas is a beautiful cruising destination known by many, not only because of its natural beauty and the safety it provides but also because of the amazing community that thrives together.

Some would argue that the new moorings in Elizabeth Harbour have caused distress. The amount of negativity that has come forth on social media about the situation has become insane. Many people have stated they will stop coming to George Town all together, while others have said they will limit their time here. However, in this week’s boat count there was 377 boats in the harbour with the 9 year average of about 300. So whatever people are saying on social media doesn’t seem to be true so far.

Having been in George Town myself for the past few months it has definitely been a point of interest but here is what I have found personally:

The moorings are being used. Whether it is new cruisers who are not confident on anchoring or simply are used to a mooring and feel more secure, or old time cruisers who are hoping to be in the anchorages they have grown to love over the years, the moorings are definitely being used.

The Elizabeth Harbour Conservation Partnership has stated that there is to be no anchoring within the mooring field. However, from what we have seen, people are still able to anchor on the outskirts of the moorings on sand dollar beach and between the two mooring fields, Sand Dollar and Chat N Chill. 

The biggest cause for debate however is what people have since called the George Town shuffle. The GT shuffle is basically when bad weather comes in, for instance a North West blow or cold front, the three main anchorages known as monument, chat n chill and sand dollar beach are not the best locations to sit this out. In the past, people would move across the harbor to Kidd Cove, Red Shanks and Goat Cay, then be able to change up their anchoring locations when the weather calms again. Simply shuffling around the harbor for the best wind protection at the given time. 

Now with the new moorings people have started anchoring in places the locals on land have never seen boats anchored. As well some people choose not to move from a potential uncomfortable anchorage because they are afraid they won’t get their spot back, i.e monument anchorage. Monument anchorage is like a sardine can with so many boats anchored that they are encroaching on the channel that the large mail boats use to deliver valuable resources to the island. 

Another topic of distress is they have only installed 64 moorings at sand dollar beach where they are spread out, not allowing the hundred + boats to anchor there.

Now the Elizabeth Harbour Conservation Partnership has stated that they have installed the moorings to save the seagrass, however in many people’s opinions they have gone about this the wrong way. Without showing the details of proper studies etc. They had a public meeting held back in December asking for advice and public opinion on the new moorings, when in fact they had already installed all the moorings. They sent out a few public surveys but to some it doesn’t feel like they cared what the cruising community thought of this. 

The mooring balls are priced between $32-$38 per night depending on boat length and you can reserve on Dockwa. There are discounted rates for weekly, or monthly mooring. However, currently for that price you get a mooring ball and that’s about it. There are no laundry or shower facilities and up to now there is no pump out boat, although they have said they have one on island it just isn’t operational yet. 

Safety of the Moorings:

The Elizabeth Harbour Conservation Partnership says the moorings they installed are 14 foot single sand screws. From the sand screw it attaches to a coupling box with a single pin, which is then attached to a shackle and the anchor line up to another shackle and the ball and pick up line. They used good quality material for this and had professional divers install them by hand. 

As far as safety is concerned there has only been one incident of a mooring breaking off, luckily it was an unoccupied ball. When it was recovered by the EHCP it was pulled up into their boat and the reason it broke was the pin holding the coupling box to the sand screw had pulled out. Shortly after the EHCP stated they checked all moorings for safety. 

Since then we have had a cold front come through with gusts reaching the 50 knot range and nobody broke loose from a mooring.

Whenever picking up a mooring it is always common practice to dive on your mooring to inspect it yourself. Human error can occur but if everyone does their due diligence in checking their moorings we can ensure the safety of our own vessels. 

The Elizabeth Harbour Conservation Partnership has stated that the balls are only rated for vessels up to 60 feet and cannot be used in named storms or predicted winds of 39 knots sustained. This may be the largest area for concern because if a severe cold front comes with predicted winds of 39 knots plus where is everyone to go?

That brings us to the amazing community here in George Town. Between a few of the long-time visitors of George Town the cruisers have gone above and beyond and mapped out the area and shown where we can anchor and where to stay away from. The yellow being the mooring fields, red area is the mail boat channel and the blue line marking the Moriah Harbour Cay National Park. The Moriah Harbour Cay National Park prohibits anchoring except in designated places, ie. Masters Harbour and Man of War Cay for a max of 72 hours.

Change in George Town is not limited to solely the mooring ball change. There are a couple other points of interest I would like to point out:

The Exuma Yacht club is currently undergoing a very positive change, a breakwater is being created to help settle the marina in the typical easterly wind. The breakwater should make EYC a nice and calm marina right in the center of George Town. The only caution is in Kidd Cove anchorage where they have dropped the large rocks. The barge that delivers the material can only go so far into the cove so it drops its load and a smaller barge and excavator move the rocks to their final location. Some of these large boulders have been left behind so far. But again our wonderful cruising community has mapped them out and put them on Navionics so be sure to check your charts when anchoring here.

The other interesting development is on Monument Beach. A new beach club is being developed soon to be called the Coconut Club. This will be another alternative to Chat N Chill. Their website promotes a new menu as well as areas for volleyball courts, bocce ball and ping pong. We all love Chat N Chill but maybe this new beach club will offer a more hygienic destination and yet another location for cruisers and tourists to spend their time.

Overall as sailors we are used to change, but like people everywhere it can take time to get used to it. Don’t avoid George Town because of what you read on social media, the changes here are meant to improve the location and help the locals and tourists alike. George Town we love you.

I can say that we had people come in and anchor between us and the beach at Sand Dollar and it worked out just fine for them. Also, people anchoring at the outer edges of the field seemed to fare just as well. Monument was packed, but I suspect that it’s always been that way.

We have been coming to Georgetown the past 18 years, more so the last seven years. This year we heard a lot about the moorings while sailing the E Caribbean, and upon arrival early March, they seem to be in use. My primary concern has been the prohibition on anchoring in Red Shanks. This is a safe place during frontal passage. There is mostly sand and little turtle grass. The moorings are sparsely placed, and I would like to see anchoring outside the mooring field as an option for cruisers seeking weather protection.

The super-rich and their Super-Yachts

D ubai, part of the United Arab Emirates and host of the International Boat Show, is a towering business and commercial center in the Middle East and sprawls along the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf.

Most of the buzz about this late-winter expo centered on the array of super-yachts docked there. The craft are among the biggest, grandest, most-stylish multimillion-dollar recreational vessels the world has ever seen.

These days, all the major boat shows display them, despite that the yachting industry suffered decade-long doldrums during and since the worldwide economic collapse. In fact, 2014 was the first time that seemed to show the stars aligning for a resurgence of interest in sea-going luxury from the richest people on the planet.

Their current principal objects of desire include a whole new selection of super-yachts (vessels over 40 meters – about 130 feet – in length) and even mega-yachts, roomier and grander still. These vessels are strictly for the mega-rich, the only consumers who can afford them and the first to emerge from the worldwide recession with great spending power.

Cayman ready to register

Cayman stands ready and eager to land itself an armada of such new seacraft – not for the sublime enjoyment of its residents but for the increased revenue and prestige such a fleet may bring the islands.

Government leaders hope a good portion of these vessels will be flying the Cayman flag as they cruise the seas. Such visibility could help enhance the islands’ image. Plus, all the fresh spending their owners and crews bring here will help enrich local suppliers of professional goods and services as well as government coffers through fees, levies and inspections costs.

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, responsible for vetting craft and their owners, conducting inspections and setting rules for their international operation, already has expressed its excitement about the industry comeback, even if just one tier is making most of the progress. That tier is the one comprised of the largest, heaviest and most luxurious of yachts.

Yacht sales increasing

The world’s super-rich have started buying their new super-yachts, industry sales numbers clearly show. But the yachting world takes that as a sign sales of the whole range of luxury craft, including smaller, more modest vessels, will lift with what looks like a rising economic tide.

In January, Joel Walton, CEO of the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, told a group of yachting industry leaders at a meeting that also happened to be in Dubai that he had been closely watching the re-emergence of large, luxurious seacraft following years of scant sales.

Walton cautioned the shipping and maritime leaders in his audience about challenges to the yachting industry, though, including the European Union’s economic uncertainty, language and cultural issues that may result from the emergence of China as a new participant in world yachting, and the industry’s continuing globalization.

But he made sure he reminded his audience that Cayman remains an especially attractive flag of convenience for any foreign owner looking for benefits from the site where he registers his vessel. Walton focused on foreign owners, of course, since there are relatively too few Caymanians with the kind of wealth to own and maintain a major yacht.

Consider what it would take to buy and navigate a vessel like Illusion, a 275-foot Pride Yachts-made mega-craft now on the market for around $100 million. Certainly out of the reach of most on island.

That’s a good reason for the Cayman government and the CISR to persuade British, U.S., Brazilian, Chinese, or other yacht owners to pay their annual fees here. But, many wonder, what is it about big boat owners that compels them, wherever they live or operate their businesses, to seek out foreign ports to register such expensive investments?

The answer is that it’s not just ports such as Grand Cayman that win rewards for offshore yacht registration; the wealthy foreign owners of Cayman-registered craft find benefits beyond the imagination of most people of ordinary means.

Advantages in Cayman

Who better could enumerate the advantages to these owners than a maritime lawyer who focuses on helping the rich protect their wealth from being nickeled and dimed away by home government rules.

“There are so many reasons why larger yacht owners register their boats abroad,” Neblett said. “One is that if you have a U.S. flag vessel, you fall under U.S. law in crewing it.” A good-sized luxury boat can require a crew of 10 to 20 people, and if you’re flying an American flag, they might have to be American citizens.

“And in the United States, there’s a shortage of people who do that kind of work,” Neblett said. “Plus, you have to have workers compensation insurance for each of them. There’s a big savings to hiring your crew outside the U.S.”

All 50 American states have sales taxes, too. In Florida, the rate is 7 percent (though in many cases it may be capped at $18,000). “There is no such tax on vessels in Cayman,” according to Neblett. “If you have one home in Florida and one in, say, New York, you probably have to pay many fees in both states if you sail between the two, another big expense.”

The Miami lawyer also points out that liability issues for owners of large vessels could put one’s personal wealth at risk in the case of certain legal disputes. “That’s why you usually want to create a corporation to hold ownership of your boat. That also can give owners a degree of anonymity when their craft bears the flag of a foreign nation.”

The Cayman Islands, he points out, provide legal privacy to corporate officers and board members, making it hard for international figures to sue them personally over issues regarding a yacht. Plus, famous athletes, business people, and entertainers can enjoy their luxury accommodations without drawing crowds of admirers –- or enemies.

“Tax benefits, privacy, liability, crewing requirements, all these are good reasons for our high-net-worth clients to register offshore,” Neblett said.

“Another is that U.S.-flagged vessels have to have U.S. Coast Guard inspections and certifications, and that involves more costs and obligations.”

What flag a yachtsman choses involves a quid pro quo. The owner benefits, and the port or nation where one is registered gets advantages, too. To set up a corporation to hold ownership of the vessel means the employment of local lawyers and, perhaps, accountants, relationships with financial institutions and some relationship with the government.

Holding the registration of a large number of sizable yachts not only brings revenue to the government and its shipping registry, it provides a measure of economic development in the private sector, as well. Owners must pay all those professionals, hire crews, maintain proper care and security for their vessel and dock it somewhere.

Choosing an offshore registry

Choosing an offshore yacht registration site, including Cayman, the Bahamas, Singapore, Cyprus, Panama, Hong Kong, and many more, can be an enormously complex process. In the U.S., savvy owners look for a board-certified maritime admiralty attorney who specializes in recreational boating. A well-decked-out firm also likely handles insurance choices, crewing issues, and financing matters.

There are more such firms all the time as, in most countries in the world, so much wealth has been accumulating in the top stratum of income and net worth. If the world economic crisis continues to fade into the past, the full spectrum of yachting industry participants is likely to grow larger, studies show.

That means more and bigger (and more luxurious) marinas and docking facilities in ports, more marine outfitting establishments doing increased business, and more back-shop professionals available to do the paperwork that yachting generates.

Boat International, a publication that focuses on international yacht sales, has chronicled a sharply growing market for the last year and more. “We know of 27 super yacht sales in January,” the current issue reported, “the best start to the year since the global financial crisis. It was up 10 on January 2014’s tally.”

But boating analysts have been focused on an emerging market of eager buyers that may affect the future of world yachting. ChinaDaily USA recently ran an article about this new market under the headline, “China is potentially biggest global yacht market.”

The popular publication went on to report that “China’s rich are becoming more interested in the yachting culture, and their numbers are big and growing.” And it named Shanghai as “the mega-city in China where yachting is catching on big among rich Chinese.” It also reported that the whole Chinese coast is undergoing a huge expansion of marinas.

That shows that wealthy residents of the most populous nation and the one whose economy has been rising the fastest in the world are as drawn to the sea as those whose fabulously rich have been motoring and sailing about for years in their floating mansions.

Welcoming yacht owners to register their craft in the Cayman Islands as their numbers increase is not only a kind gesture to the next generation of rich, private mariners, it likely enhances the economy here as well.

• Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
• The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
• Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."

The Space Weather Prediction Center only rarely issues "severe" storm watches. The last time such an alert was issued was in January 2005. "Watches at this level are very rare," the center said.

The colorful aurora forms when particles flowing from the sun get caught up in Earth's magnetic field. The particles interact with molecules of atmospheric gases to cause the famed glowing green and reddish colors of the aurora.

Will the northern lights be visible in Kentucky this weekend?

An NOAA map shows parts of Northern Kentucky are within the area that could see the aurora borealis this weekend, but it's at the very edge of the predicted zone. But just like weather on earth — especially in the Midwest — space weather can be fickle (even more so). Unlike terrestrial weather, scientists who forecast celestial events like the aurora rely on observations of the 93-million-miles-away sun to make their predictions.

The northern lights, aka the aurora borealis, have appeared more frequently in the night sky over the United States recently. In April 2023, for example, a stunning aurora display was seen as far south as  Arkansas in the South and Arizona in the West.  

So why the uptick in aurora sightings? And is this expected to continue? Well, if you love the aurora, you're in luck, as it may be coming to a sky near you more often over the next few years thanks to the "solar maximum," which is expected to peak this year.

"There have been an increase in aurora seen in general on Earth,"  Shannon Schmoll, the director of the Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University  told USA TODAY last year. "The sun has been more active, resulting in more solar storms that cause solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CME).

What's the difference between a solar flare and a coronal mass ejection?

While coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares are both tremendous explosions of energy that occur on the sun, they move at different speeds.

Solar flares, NASA says, are some of the most powerful explosions in the solar system. Particles from a solar flare can travel at the speed of light and reach Earth in minutes. CMEs,  explains NASA , are large clouds of solar plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun that can take up to three days to reach our planet.

Tips for viewing the northern lights

"Go out at night," NOAA said. "And get away from city lights."

The best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time). These hours expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases.

There may be aurora in the evening and morning, but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing, NOAA said.

Hoosiers who gaze up into the night sky Friday and Saturday evenings might catch a rare glimpse of the northern lights. The  aurora borealis  could be making its way further south above large portions of the United States because of increased solar activity, space weather experts said Friday.

What are Central Indiana's chances of seeing the northern lights this weekend?

Space weather — much like an Indiana spring — is fickle, however. Unlike terrestrial weather, scientists who forecast celestial events like the aurora rely on observations of the 93-million-miles-away sun to make their predictions.

An early Friday morning forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration doesn't paint a rosy outlook for Hoosiers living in Central and Southern Indiana to see the northern lights — at least not directly overhead. The southern extent of where the aurora might appear cuts off at about halfway through the state, according to NOAA.

"Central Indiana is predicted to likely not have an overhead aurora," said  Butler University  Physics & Astronomy professor Brian Murphy in a message to IndyStar.

But, Murphy said, it's not all bad news.

Auroras are 100 to 400 km (60 to 250 miles) above the Earth’s surface, which means there's "a very good chance" for Hoosiers to see the aurora if they look toward the northern sky, Murphy said.

Improving your odds of spotting this celestial light show will depend on where you watch it — the darker the skies the better, and with as few obstructions as possible. Murphy said the best hours to possibly catch the aurora will be from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. over the weekend.

"Keep in mind that these forecasts are like any other forecast," Murphy said. "We may see nothing at all or perhaps the aurora may be stronger and we may have it be strong enough to be an overhead aurora."

Campus protests over the Gaza war

How student protests are changing college graduations.

Many of this year's graduating college students were looking forward to their first formal commencement ceremony.

"I was a 2020 graduate in high school," says Isa Johnson, a senior at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Because of the pandemic, her high school graduation couldn't happen in person.

She was excited to finally get a traditional graduation this year, but the unrest on her campus has forced her to adjust her expectations.

After Jewish student organizations at USC raised concerns about valedictorian Asna Tabassum's past social media activity, the school cut Tabassum's speech from commencement. Other students rushed to her defense, and marched on campus in support. Eventually, the administration canceled the school's main commencement , citing safety concerns.

"We were finally going to be able to have... graduation," Johnson says, "and then within a whole week it was all taken away."

Columbia and Emory universities change commencement plans after weeks of turmoil

Across the country, protests on college campuses are running up against graduation season. Over the weekend, ceremonies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Indiana University Bloomington were marked by protests. Graduating students in Michigan interrupted the ceremony with chants, Palestinian flags and banners. At Indiana's commencement, a plane with a banner that read "LET GAZA LIVE!" flew overhead and a group of graduating students staged a walkout.

Schools with upcoming ceremonies are announcing extra safety precautions and venue changes. On Monday, following weeks of campus tensions, Columbia University in New York City joined USC in canceling its main ceremony . It's also moving smaller, school-based ceremonies off the main lawn, where protestors have been gathering, and into an outdoor sports venue. Also on Monday, Emory University, in Atlanta, said it was moving the ceremony to a venue in Duluth, Ga., over 20 miles away.

Johnson, at USC, says she understands why students feel the need to protest, but a lot of her classmates are upset about how their graduation has been affected.

"They're kind of just like, you know, 'I want a normal graduation.' I just wish things could be normal on campus. The atmosphere on campus isn't what it usually is," she says. "I think it makes a lot of people uncomfortable."

How campuses are preparing for graduation

After Oct. 7 – when Hamas attacked Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and taking at least 240 hostages – Israel retaliated by bombarding Gaza. That war has killed at least 34,622 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

In mid-April, college students on campuses around the country began protesting in support of Palestinians. Students are calling for their schools to divest from companies that do business with Israel, among other demands. The movement has led to the arrest of at least 2,500 protestors, according to the Associated Press .

U of Mississippi opens probe over hostile protest that involved racist taunts

Students are organizing in highly visible spaces on campus, like the main quad of a school, and they're often opting for sit-ins rather than passing protests with a scheduled beginning and end. At several schools, students have formed encampments, pitching tents and living outside for days at a time.

At the same time, campuses are preparing to receive families eager to celebrate graduation.

At Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, Calif., the school is still cleaning up from a protest that ended with the student occupation of two campus buildings. The school says graduation ceremonies this coming weekend will be modified for security and held at three off-campus sites, as the campus remains closed.

At Wesleyan University in Connecticut, the school says it will not disperse the student encampment on the main lawn, so it may still be up during graduation at the end of May. At Harvard University, students are camped on Harvard Yard, but not in a place that would interfere with commencement later this month. Still, in a message to the school community on Monday, Interim President Alan Garber said students who continue to participate in the encampment "will be referred for involuntary leave."

At other colleges, administrators have negotiated agreements with protesting students. Protestors at Brown University recently agreed to clear their encampment in exchange for a divestment vote later this fall by the school's governing board.

Brown sophomore Daniel Solomon sits on the school's Student Organizing Committee on Antisemitism, and was involved in the negotiations.

"A big part of the discussion was not interrupting commencement and reunion weekend and to have a peaceful reading period, to have a peaceful finals period," he explains.

Other students have different priorities. NPR spoke with students who were part of the protests at UCLA and Columbia, two schools that saw confrontations between students as well as with police . Many didn't want to be named because they were concerned about doxxing, but they said they felt that raising awareness about what's happening in Gaza is more important than commencement ceremonies.

Not every campus is steeped in turmoil

Other campuses have seen little to no disruption from protests. At some of these schools, classes have wrapped for the year and students' minds are elsewhere. Charles Burns, a fourth year student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, described a scene from his last ever undergraduate class:

"My professor asked us, 'OK, if any of you guys were at, say, Columbia or Brown or any of these campuses, how many of you would be participating in an encampment?' And... this is like a huge class – like 150 to 200 kids – maybe like 1 or 2 raise their hands."

Over the weekend, the University of Virginia's small encampment did get broken up by police and several people were arrested. Since then things have been quiet, and Burns is hoping they stay that way. As with Johnson at USC, this will be his first official graduation. In 2020, because of the pandemic, he had a drive-through high school commencement.

He's excited to get the full experience this year, and to have his grandparents make the trip from Kansas City to Charlottesville.

"Any kind of disruption to my college graduation... that would be a huge bummer. So I can only hope it doesn't happen. We'll see."

Skywatchers get ready: Thanks to heightened solar activity, the  aurora borealis  could be coming to the skies above parts of Texas this weekend, space weather forecasters said Thursday.

A rare severe geomagnetic storm will trigger auroras, making it possible for some Texans in the northernmost parts of the state to view the spectacle with the naked eye. Federal forecasters from  NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center  said that during previous solar activity of this magnitude, the "aurora has been seen as low as Alabama and northern California." The aurora could be visible on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.

Previously forecast as a G2, or moderate, geomagnetic storm, this weekend's event has upgraded to G4, or severe. This is the first time that a geomagnetic storm has rated a magnitude of G4 since 2005, according to USA TODAY .
