New Hong Kong marina adds much needed capacity

Up to 600 new mooring spaces are now available in hong kong’s hei ling chau in the form of delta marina….

Image for article New Hong Kong marina adds much needed capacity

Hong Kong has been short on berthing capacity for private vessels for a number of years. According to the Government’s Marine Department (MarDep), there are over 10,000 registered private leisure vessels competing for only around 5,000 public and private moorings. Up to 600 new fore-and-aft mooring spaces are now available in Hong Kong’s Hei Ling Chau in the form of the newly created Delta Marina. Founded by Bart Kimman, Hong Kong yacht owners and visiting superyachts will have new mooring options in a previously underused typhoon shelter. The new marina is 15 minutes by boat from Aberdeen, Hong Kong.

“Hei Ling Chau typhoon shelter is a great facility just begging to be used”, says Bart Kimman of Delta Marina and Express Service Ltd. “We are offering a seamless end-to-end service that includes assistance with the acquisition of a proper legal mooring in a Government Typhoon Shelter, followed up by a service package to look after your boat that includes security, water, limited electricity, grey and black water pump-out, mooring inspection, typhoon preparation, and assistance with on-site servicing, maintenance and repairs.”

MarDep had recently proposed additional mooring facilities in a number of locations, the biggest of which is the typhoon shelter at Hei Ling Chau (now Delta Marina). While this location had been proposed by the authorities on many occasions as a means of alleviating mooring capacity issues in Hong Kong, proposals had been resoundingly dismissed by the boating community on account of the poor accessibility and lack of primary services.

According to Kimman, convenience is everything in Hong Kong, hence the lack of support for Hei Ling Chau. However, with the addition of Delta Marina’s fast limousine ferry, a purpose-built 18 passenger tender that cruises at 24 knots, the marina is 15 minutes from Aberdeen, eight minutes from Discovery Bay and three minutes from Mui Wo. “Speed annihilates distance. Very shortly, we’ll be running some complimentary media trips to prove the point,” comments Kimman.

Delta Marina can also provide interior/exterior cleaning services, catering and provisioning services, dinghy and tender hire, water toy hire, and professional captain and crew hire.

“It really is a one-stop-shop arrangement. We’ll get you onto a mooring, look after your boat like it’s our own, get it ready to use, put a crew on board, tidy it up afterwards, and handle all those annoying things like annual surveys, inspections, and licensing requirements. Call it a Yacht Concierge Service,” continues Kimman.

Rather than operating a fixed berthing model, by creating a fore-and-aft mooring model, Delta Marina is able to adapt its marina to meet demand. Importantly, however, in light of Hong Kong’s limited capacity to welcome large superyachts, Delta Marina will be able to moor vessels up to 75m.

In the recently published The Pacific Superyacht Report  (issue 207), we explore Asian superyacht buyer dynamics, with a particular focus on Hong Kong. One of the pervading findings was that, in the event of local infrastructure developments creating larger berthing options, domestic UHNWIs would purchase larger superyachts. However, given the usage models typically operated in Hong Kong, namely day and weekend boating, it is unlikely that local buyers would keep vessels larger than 45m in domestic waters.

“Typically, anything owned by the Hong Kong entrepreneurs above 500gt has been kept in Europe...[However] ownership of sub-500gt yachts simply makes sense for the domestic market. Unlike the Mediterranean, where large yacht usage usually entails spending a week or longer on board and visiting a number of locations, yachts that are kept in Hong Kong are commonly used as day boats. However, there are suggestions that this model may be changing and that the COVID-19 pandemic has hastened this next stage of the superyacht evolution,” reads The Pacific Superyacht Report .

With Delta Marina providing flexible capacity, there is greater scope for domestic owners to buy superyachts at the larger end of the practical local scale (45m), as well as providing a practical place for foreign superyacht visitors with vessels that may struggle to find space within Hong Kong's most renowned marinas.

Home Moorings

Last updated on 26th February 2024

Finding a mooring in hong kong waters.

Securing an adequate and safe mooring in Hong Kong can be challenging. With only a small handful of privately-owned, over-subscribed marinas, it can also be very expensive. Fortunately, club moorings represent less than 5% of all available moorings, and Hong Kong’s 12,000 registered leisure vessels have plenty more options to chose from. Whether you are looking for a Marine Department mooring or a traditional mooring in a busy typhoon shelter or in one Hong Kong’s many other safe anchorages, local contacts are the key to success.

Thanks to his extensive network of trusted local partners, spanning all of Hong Kong’s waters, from Tung Chung to Tai Po all the way down to the South Side, the Aberdeen-based Boater can find moorings of every size at every price, in the time it takes to secure a bow line.

Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter

Aberdeen’s southern harbour (part of the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter) has some of the most desirable moorings in Hong Kong. The club moorings of the Aberdeen Marina Club (AMC), Aberdeen Boat Club (ABC) and Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) are reserved to club members and subject to a waiting list. The rest of the harbour is shared between Marine Department moorings (fore and aft moorings on MarDep buoys) and traditional moorings (on quasi permanent anchors), all of which are available at a price. The presence of numerous shipyards on both the Ap Lei Chau and Wong Chuk Hang sides, as well as the multitude of workshops in the Shum Wan and Po Chong Wan Temporary Industrial Estates make Aberdeen Hong Kong’s main hub of leisure vessel repair and maintenance.

The proximity of Lei Tung and Wong Chuk Hang MTR, the busy Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau town centres and Wong Chuk Hang business centre, as well as the nearby beaches and clubs of the island’s more relaxed South Side, all contribute to making Aberdeen Hong Kong’s most attractive typhoon shelter for leisure vessel owners.

hong kong yacht marina

Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter

Kwun Tong is the most recent of Hong Kong’s many typhoon shelters. Situated on Kowloon’s south side, between Kowloon Bay and Lei Yue Mun, it is also one of Hong Kong’s least congested.

There are no Marine Department moorings in Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter and space is allocated on a “first come first served” basis. Vessels can either anchor (fore and aft) for free or berth alongside a commercially operated barge (prices vary with services offered: water and electricity, cleaning, etc.). Unlike most other typhoon shelters, where fishing boats or dumb lighters (crane barges) have traditionally been the majority, Kwun Tong mostly hosts leisure vessels (superyachts, leisure junks, sailing boats and stay-aboards) and landing pontoons.

Given its proximity to the thriving Kwun Tong business district, soon to be rebranded Grand Central, and the Kai Tak Cruiser terminal, which was built on the grounds of Hong Kong’s old airport and now hosts regular exhibitions, Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter is bound to become increasingly attractive to leisure vessel owners. The proximity of the Kwun Tong MTR and North Point ferry make access reasonably easy, while the scheduled opening of a Kai Tak MTR station (Shatin to Central Line) will doubtless turn the Kwun Tong T.S. into one of the most convenient and attractive typhoon shelters in Hong Kong.

Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter

Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter is located on the north-eastern shore of Hong Kong island, between Sai Wan Ho and Chai Wan. Well protected, this traditional fishing harbour boasts half a dozen shipyards.  Over the last few years, leisure vessels have started to make an appearance. There are no Marine Department moorings and all vessels are either moored on anchors (fore and aft) or berthed alongside licensed barges. There are a few moorings available, at a price.

The proximity of Shau Kei Wan and Sai Wan Ho MTR stations, as well as the busy Shau Kei Wan town centre, make  this an attractive alternative to other,  busier Hong Kong island typhoon shelters.

Brand new innovative wakesurfing boats. Now available in Hong Kong.

As wakesurfing rises in popularity in Hong Kong, even surpassing wakeboarding – a similar, yet fundamentally different sport – surfing boat manufacturers have taken the opportunity to modify, refine, and upgrade their boat designs. Unlike wakeboarding, wakesurfing requires a particular set of features, such as a different engine placement and hull shape, alongside innovative and advanced equipment to provide an enjoyable, safe, and unforgettable wakesurfing experience.

The main difference between wakesurfing and wakeboarding is that with wakesurfing, you aren’t permanently attached to the boat via a rope. Wakeboarding gained popularity thanks to being an invigorating and fun sport in which you travel at high speeds across the water behind a boat. Wakesurfing is typically a slower – but by no means easier – sport in which you surf in the waves made by the boat’s engines. This provides surfers in Hong Kong with much easier and guaranteed access to surfable waves, provided the boat is designed correctly.

The design of the boat

The design of wakesurfing boats differs from wakeboarding boats in that there is a greater emphasis on your safety. Rather than jutting out of the back of the boat, the propellers are located on the bottom – safely out of reach of anyone in the water.

In addition to this, boats with a convex V-shaped hull ride deeper in the water, creating a bigger and more surfable wave. This is different from boats with flatter hulls that might be better for water skiing, for example.

Depending on the model of the boat, there is ample storage and a luxurious cockpit with plenty of space to move around in. There is also plenty of ballast weight on the boat for extra security without sacrificing any storage space.

Driving a new era of yachts and water sports boats in Hong Kong

Since its establishment, ASIAMARINE has focused on yacht rental, sales, and management. More than 20 years of experience and presence across Hong Kong and Asia, ASIAMARINE is at the forefront of the yachting industry.

In addition to luxury yachts, ASIAMARINE is now introducing new types of wakesurfing boats to provide watersport enthusiasts in Hong Kong with more exciting and safe options to take them into the water.

About Hong Kong

Why is Hong Kong a good sailing destination?

Hong Kong, a fascinating fusion of East and West, offers some of the most exciting and diverse yachting experiences in the world. At Yachting.Rent, we invite you to discover why this vibrant city-state is an unparalleled sailing destination.

One of the reasons that make Hong Kong unique is its breathtaking skyline, best appreciated from the deck of a yacht. The iconic Victoria Harbour, brimming with traditional junks and modern vessels, presents a spectacular sight, especially during the evening light show, ‘A Symphony of Lights’.

But Hong Kong’s allure extends beyond its urban heart. It boasts an impressive coastline, interspersed with more than 260 islands. These untamed pockets of tranquility offer a refreshing contrast to the bustling city and are ripe for exploration. Whether you’re anchoring in a secluded bay or diving into clear waters, these islands bring you close to nature.

The city’s subtropical climate also makes it a perfect year-round sailing destination. The waters are warm and the winds favorable, inviting sailing enthusiasts to explore this maritime paradise at any time of the year.

Moreover, Hong Kong’s robust marine infrastructure ensures a seamless yachting experience. There are numerous marinas equipped with top-notch facilities, and services like fueling, repairs, and provisioning are easily accessible.

Join us at Yachting.Rent and discover the distinct blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty that make Hong Kong a premier sailing destination.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Hong Kong

When it comes to choosing the perfect vessel for your Hong Kong yachting adventure, Yachting.Rent is here to guide you. Both sailing boats and catamarans have their unique benefits, and your choice ultimately depends on the kind of experience you desire.

Sailing boats are an excellent choice for those looking for a traditional and thrilling sailing experience. These vessels, designed with a single hull, are known for their ability to cut through water with grace and speed. They are perfect for sailing enthusiasts who enjoy the art of harnessing the wind and love the feel of the boat tilting with the waves. Hong Kong’s consistent winds and vast open water make it an ideal location for this type of sailing adventure.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their dual hull design, provide more stability and space, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey. This makes them perfect for families or groups looking for a relaxed sailing experience, with ample room for lounging, dining, and even sunbathing. Moreover, their shallow draft allows you to navigate Hong Kong’s lesser-known, shallow waters and anchor in secluded bays.

Whether you choose the sleek lines of a sailing boat or the spacious luxury of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent ensures top-quality vessels, meticulously maintained for your safety and comfort. Embark on your unique Hong Kong sailing adventure with us!
