The Tasteful Hawaiian Eatery With A Hidden Cocktail Room • Liholiho Yacht Club
Say Aloha to the eatery that everyone’s trying to book for its dangerously good tasting menu and hidden basement bar.
The bright spot is inspired by the early 80’s “pop up” parties that Hawaiian uncles used to throw after a day of sailing. Traditionally, a small-scale, informal “lūʻau” would feature grilled foods, music, ice-cold beers and a live band for anyone to enjoy. A small fee would be charged purely to cover the costs, allowing them to uphold what became a way of life. While Liholiho Yacht Club isn’t on a yacht or even near a marina, the concept has been carried through with a welcoming finesse that’s worth the 3-month wait.
Eat like Prince Kuhio at an Ohana Table
View this post on Instagram
“Ohana” meaning family, is exactly the appetite size you’ll need to bring to this feast. You can expect Chef Ravi Kapur to serve up 10-12 Mmm-evoking, shareable dishes. The highlights include tuna poke, sesame oil, radish and nori cracker or duck liver toast, jalapeno with pickled pineapple. The meal will cost around $62 per person (excluding gratuity and drinks), with no less than 8 and no more than 12 guests. There are only two Ohana tables available which you’ll need to book 90 days in advance, so keep an ear to the ground.
Louie’s Gen-Gen cocktail room
While this highly Instagrammable spot, with brick walls, comfy turquoise sofas and hot pink sunsets, is below the main dining room, it has a completely different identity. By day it’s a bright brunch spot, and a vibey, boozy cocktail bar by night. You could sip on a “Last Mango in Paris” while you wait for a table or settle in and order a waffled grill cheese and local Dungeness crab, served with nori chips, while the DJ spins away the night.
As with the original parties, this trendy spot is hugely popular-with a 3-week reservation waiting list for a dinner table, it’s best to plan ahead. If you’re not the type to know what you’ll be in the mood for in a month’s time, then arrive at 4:30 just before opening time to secure a spot at one of the bars.

Liholiho Yacht Club Opens Anew in San Francisco

Lower Nob Hill
Before you go to a restaurant, what do you want — or need — to know most? In our series, The Rundown , we’re sharing all the essentials about newly opened (as well as some of your favorite) restaurants.
Today, we’re looking at the much beloved Liholiho Yacht Club on Sutter Street in Nob Hill. The restaurant has been closed to dining since the start of the pandemic, but after almost three long years, the space in now reopened. And though Liholiho will be familiar to its legions of regulars and its tagline remains the same — “a restaurant celebrating heritage through food in a lively atmosphere” — the return after three long years means it is, in many ways, very much a new restaurant. Here are five things to know before you go.
1. The Values
Following in the forward-thinking footsteps of sister restaurant Good Good Culture Club , Liholiho is transparent about its workplace culture and the ways in which it is trying to build a better restaurant industry. Read the entire statement here , and take note of the emphases on equitable pay, growth, care, and empowerment. For these reasons, among others, there is an equitable compensation fee on all checks of 20%; read more about that here .
2. The Space
The space has been refreshed and remodeled in nuanced ways. If you’ve been to the restaurant once, you might not notice, but if you’ve been a regular over the years, you’ll definitely see and feel the changes. There are new light fixtures and more bar seating up front; the booths are now lined with comfy, burgundy cushions, and the walls are painted with a wave-like pattern by Oakland-based artist Kalani Ware . The glass partition in the back has been knocked down, and the large espresso machine that used to sit at the bar counter has been removed, effectively increasing the feeling of spaciousness inside the restaurant.
3. The Food
You’re of course at Liholiho Yacht Club for the unique and singular fare inspired by heritage. Some of the restaurant’s classics make a return, albeit slightly refreshed: The tuna poke on nori chips are a different shape. The fluffy, poppyseed-studded buns are now filled with housemade spam instead of beef tongue. And the duck liver mousse is now served on wonderful banana bread.
But there are also new items on the menu that are sure to be instant hits, like the spicy, thinly shaved pig head salad and the swordfish katsu with Russian dressing and a caper butter sauce that evokes Filet-o-Fish vibes in the best way possible.
4. The Drinks
Sean Kelley started at Liholiho Yacht Club back in 2015; he’s now beverage director, creating vibrant, citrus-forward cocktails like the Fholston Paradise, which has agricole rum, coconut liquor, just enough absinthe so that you barely notice the subtle licorice layer, and bright lime to balance it all. There is also beer, wine, sake, and non-alcoholic cocktails as well.
Fans of the downstairs bar, Louie’s Gen-Gen Room, will have to be patient; the space isn’t ready to debut just yet, but the team is hoping to have it open by the beginning of 2023, if not sooner.
5. The Reservations
So you want to make a reservation at Liholiho Yacht Club? Smart move. Know that reservations open exactly two weeks out at exactly 10 p.m.; as usual, your odds are better if you’re looking at non-primetime hours, and weekdays. If nothing’s available, do set that Notify. It’s a wonderful thing. And of course, the crew does save some walk-in spots every night.

Michelin guide’s point of view.
There are no yachts to be found at its current Mission residence, but hordes of locals and enthusiasts remain quite eager to book passage on Liholiho's love boat. Fusing Californian technique with the flavors of Chef/owner Ravi Kapur’s native Hawaii, this earthy, bustling, and airy space is known for strong cocktails, shareable plates, and near-impossible reservations. Walk-ins are welcome, but make sure you arrive in time to beat the crowds. Pivoted around a large, open kitchen, the dining room hums with groups savoring the likes of short rib bao or whole fried fish marinated with coconut and turmeric. If you turn your nose up at Spam try the house-made version. It just might convert you.

The shaved pig head salad from Liholiho Yacht Club will overwhelm you with awe. You know, the kind inspired by a top-down, golden hour drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. Frisée and Asian pears, tossed in a zingy fish sauce vinaigrette, surround glossy slices of pig head like an edible halo. And the meat melts the second it hits your tongue. The salad is a spot-on indicator of what this Lower Nob Hill spot does best: completely original dishes that are in their own class.
A lot has changed in Liholiho Yacht Club’s world since their two-year hiatus starting in 2020. The restaurant underwent an interior refresh. And the team opened Good Good Culture Club , the lively sister spot in the Mission and one of the most fun places to eat in the city. What hasn’t changed is that Liholiho is a bucket-list restaurant for milestone life moments you’ll be telling stories about for the next ten years.
The menu is described as “heritage driven,” and here that translates to salads, snacks, and meats and seafood influenced mostly by South and East Asian cuisines. Liholiho is doing its own thing, combining every flavor under the sun to turn out dishes that feel new. And the impressive presentation makes them almost too pretty to eat.
Just look to the rendang curry that arrives with an entire turmeric butter naan baked over the top. It’s one of six rotating entrées, and one to get on your table. Stab the bread’s shell to release the fragrant steam like it’s a pore-opening facial. The swordfish katsu is the other standout. It’s decorated with a Russian dressing drizzle, radishes, and gherkins, and stays crisp atop light caper butter. Smaller plates are as deserving of the spotlight. Beef tongue and miso aioli between soft steamed buns are saucy and umami-packed, gulf shrimp are leveled up with sweet longanisa stuffing, and the previously mentioned pig head salad is, quite simply, a masterpiece.
While the food is the main event, the space is where you want to be on nights that call for multiple rounds of wine, and pandan or li hing mui-infused cocktails. The open kitchen, smack dab in the middle of the airy, brick-lined dining room, is a hub of constant movement. Staff add the finishing touches on some katsu, light sparklers on top of a baked Hawaii, and move around so fast they blur. Get to this buzzy place for any celebration you can think of, including to experience a dinner that's unlike anything else in SF.
Food Rundown
Shaved Pig Head
Raise a glass to this phenomenal salad, which will make all other salads you eat after seem sad. You’ll also want this fish sauce dressing on everything.
Rendang Curry
Turmeric butter naan is baked directly on top of the bowl, and you’re instructed to either lift it right off or break the middle with a spoon and let a few pieces of bread soak up the nutty curry. Do the latter. The curry has deep flavor and a mild kick, and the lamb falls apart even if you just poke it with a fork. We only wish the curry came with more meat, and a side of rice because the naan will run out.
Swordfish Katsu
The sound of someone cutting into the crust on this katsu would probably rack up thousands of views on ASMR YouTube. Bright pickled onions and caper butter make this one of the lighter entrées on the menu.
Grassfed Ribeye
This ribeye is perfectly charred, and topped with slightly sweet carrots that'll rewire the part of your brain that stores the carrot facts. The black sesame and nose-clearing hot mustard dipping sauce that comes on the side cuts through the meat’s richness nicely.
An excellent rendition of tuna poke. Will it change your life? Not necessarily. But if you’re down to spend $11 on a few bites of fish, Liholiho is a great place to do so.
Poppyseed Steam Bun
Like the poke, this poppyseed steam bun is a trademark Liholiho dish that regulars will recognize from the early days. Dripping out of the pillowy bun are juices from the beef tongue, kimchi, and miso aioli. It’s one per order, so plan accordingly.
Baked Hawaii
Save room for this. Torched meringue is swirled around a mound of coconut POG sorbet and fluffy orange chiffon cake. It’s tart, sweet, and exactly what you should eat on every future birthday.

Liholiho Yacht Club
By Andrew Knowlton and Julia Kramer
Calling this a Hawaiian restaurant would be like calling Lady Gaga a “talented singer.” True—and yet not really the whole story. Because while Oahu native Ravi Kapur’s spins on tuna poke and pork belly are delicious riffs on the 50th state’s signatures, what really sets Liholiho apart is the chef’s ability to pull from NorCal, Japanese, Indian, and Korean playbooks. These influences are mashed together into dishes that feel both excitingly new and so spot-on it’s like they were, well, born this way. Think festive, shareable dishes like lettuce cups of fried oyster and beef carpaccio, beef tongue–filled poppy-seed steam buns, and humongous mains like beef ribs in kimchi-chili sauce or fried cornish game hen with flowering kale. The minimalist light fixtures and blonde-wood booths give off California cool. No wonder Kapur’s mom, whose face beams from behind the bar in a giant black-and-white photograph, sports such a big smile.
What to order: tuna poke with nori crackers, beef ribs with kimchi-chili sauce, Baked Hawaiian (caramelized vanilla ice cream with toasted chiffon cake)
We love: the off-menu house-made Spam, served over rice with furikake

Liholiho Yacht Club , the wildly popular restaurant inspired by chef Ravi Kapur’s Hawaiian heritage, is shuffling restaurants and locations again. During the pandemic, the restaurant group shuttered its sister restaurant Dear Inga , and earlier this spring moved the more established Liholiho into Inga’s prime location on 18th Street in Mission Dolores. At that time, it was presented as a temporary move , which made sense during an era of dining restrictions: In terms of neighborhoods, the Mission has been busier than Nob Hill, which made it an approachable spot to serve takeout, and the 18th Street location also boasted a rooftop, which the team repainted as a rainbow paradise for outdoor dining .
But now, there’s another big update from the Liholiho team: Fans and regulars will be relieved to hear that Liholiho Yacht Club is returning to its original location on Nob Hill in spring or summer of 2022. The team will be debuting a new restaurant called Good Good Culture Club in Mission Dolores on January 11. Which means that sadly, if somewhat expectedly at this point, Dear Inga is finally and officially confirmed as permanently closed.
Good Good Culture Club is a team effort from general manager Aimee Arcilla, chef Kevin Keovanpheng, and chef Brett Shaw, and all three have come through the kitchen and dining room at Liholiho. Arcilla and Shaw are married, and the duo behind Hunnybee , the Filipino inflected pop-up that was working out of the Liholiho kitchen during the pandemic. Born and raised in the states, Arcilla is proud of her Filipina heritage, and Keovanpheng his Laotian upbringing, and they’re into what they’re calling “heritage-driven cooking” as “inspired by the Asian diaspora” — defined as Filipino and Laotian flavors featuring Californian ingredients and wood-fire techniques.
The new menu is simply divided into savory and sweet, and the small plates look particularly appealing, including halibut sashimi with tomatillo ponzu and smoked jalapeno, chicken wings stuffed with garlic rice and glazed in adobo, poppyseed steamed buns packed with smoked beef belly, and crispy rice balls with mushroom sisig. For dessert, there’s a “Halo Ha-Lao,” which appears to be a Laotian take on the iconic Filipino dessert, with ube ice cream, jackfruit, mango jellies, and coconut syrup. Check out the full menu below. No word on drinks yet, but bar director Janice Bailon is particularly into agave, so it’d be safe to expect tequila and mezcal cocktails.
With this new opening, Liholiho partners Ravi Kapur, April Storm, and Jeff Hanak shared that they don’t want to go back to “normal,” and say that they’ve raised wages, added a 20 percent service fee, and shortened service hours, in order to better compensate and support their team. In doing so, the Liholiho group is joining a number of other Bay Area restaurants that are trying to cut tips , although some have failed. “We don’t know if these changes will work, but we do know that we don’t want to go back to the old ways,” the trio said in a statement. “We are so grateful to have developed a strong following of diners and regulars in our six years of business. It takes a community to implement change, and we hope you can be part of it, too. That’s what Good Good Culture Club is about: positive change, heritage, love, aloha.”
Boor Projects, the same design team that envisioned Dear Inga only two years ago, is also overseeing the renovation again for Good Good Culture Club, and this time it sounds like they’re leaning into bright colors, several murals, and lush plants.
The Liholiho team declined to comment on Dear Inga: why they decided not to pursue that restaurant and what happened with their partnership with chef David Golovin. When Dear Inga opened in fall of 2019 , it was also a highly anticipated restaurant: Golovin is a sausage expert who supplied the links to Nopa for many years, and with Dear Inga, he dug into Eastern European “grandma food” not often seen in San Francisco, including labor-intensive sausages, smoked fish, stuffed cabbage, and more. During the pandemic, he shared the challenges of adapting that kind of food for takeout . Eater SF reached out to Golovin for comment and did not hear back as of publication time, but will update this story as necessary.
Good Culture Club is opening on January 11, with reservations opening up one week in advance. Hours will be Tuesday to Saturday, 5 to 9 p.m.

Walk-in Seating
Thinking of joining us as a walk-in guest? below are a few tips and tricks.
We are open for walk-in seating Tuesday through Saturday from 5-9pm.
PLEASE don't reserve outside of primetime and walk in early. This blocks reservations from other guests and results in empty seats later in the evening. Walk-in seating and reservations are managed separately.
Remember, 95% of guests prefer your desired time. Meaning everyone wants 6 or 6:30. Think prime time, or preferred seating. Arriving at 6:30 could put you in the bottleneck arrival time. 5 pm is usually the best time to arrive. After 5 pm, the waitlist can grow.
Neighbor? Pop in at 5 pm day-of, add your name to our waitlist with your desired time. We will do our best to seat you close to that time. We will send a text as your table is nearing ready!
Of course these tips are guesses and suggestions, we sometimes do not have a wait. We will always do our best to get you seated, we want you to join us.
A few things to note - Allow ample time for parking, The neighborhood is notorious for difficult parking. Once you are finished with your meal, please remember our guests still on the waitlist. Move to our bar for drinks and dessert.
Be kind and patient with us. We invite you to read our values & equity page and please learn more about our team .
If you have specific questions email us, we are here to help. We appreciate your support of our family owned restaurant. We realize we would not be here without you.

Nightlife City Guide
Moscow: nightlife and clubs
Moscow nightlife: despite the freezing weather, the Russian capital gets hot as the sun goes down. Between discos, luxury, exaggerated parties and beautiful Russian girls, the Moscow nightlife offers everything you need for memorable nights.
Moscow nightlife
The city of Moscow is definitely one of the most interesting European cities: the stories about underground lines and secret bunkers, the architecture of its buildings, from the Kremlin to St. Basil's Cathedral, up to the Soviet style of the Seven Sisters and modern skyscrapers, make the Russian capital is a unique and fascinating city.
One of the many things that Moscow is famous for is its wild nightlife . Moscow never sleeps. If there is anything true about Russians, it is that they love to party! Despite its freezing weather, Moscow turns out to be a hot city with endless fun, hip nightclubs, extreme luxury, beautiful Russian girls and lots of booze when night falls!
In fact, in recent years, the Russian capital has definitively abandoned the gray period of communism and its inhabitants have given vent to their desire for fun. As you might expect in a city of over 12 million people, Moscow has an amazing array of nightlife options and a huge choice for all tastes, whether you are a jazz fan, hardcore clubbers or just plain old alcoholics. The nightlife in Moscow winds through a multitude of alternative and transgressive nightclubs where the watchword is to meet new people and spend a night of unbridled and uninhibited fun . In addition to the numerous discos, in the Russian capital there are also 20 casinos open until dawn. For those who want a break of intriguing relaxation, in the city of Moscow there are also numerous massage salons .
Most of Moscow's nightclubs contain a restaurant, a bar area and a nightclub (the larger ones also have bowling alleys, billiards and a casino!). Perhaps because Moscow is such a large metropolis with very cold temperatures and taxis are so expensive that the owners of the bars and clubs want to offer their customers an all in one place for night entertainment.
So, in other words, Moscow is not the best city in the world for bar-crawling, especially bearing in mind that these multipurpose venues often charge entrance, but rather it is better to carefully choose the club where to spend the night.
For a quieter and more sober evening, head for an evening stroll along the Via Arbat or the Red Square to be fascinated by the lights of the city and the grandeur of the buildings, and admire the shops and street artists. An alternative to experience Moscow's nightlife is to spend an evening of lyric, ballet or opera. The Russian capital is home to around sixty theaters, the most famous of which is the world-renowned Bolshoi Theater (Theater Square, 1, Moscow).
Moscow nightlife districts
Moscow's nightlife is not concentrated in a single district but is scattered throughout the city. However, there are areas with a greater concentration of bars and nightclubs .
The Krasnij Oktjabr (Russian for "Red October") complex, a red brick building located on the island in the center of the Moscow River that once housed a chocolate factory, is dotted with numerous trendy nightclubs and offers spectacular views of the river and the symbolic places of the Russian capital. This is where the most glamorous parties in Moscow take place, there are numerous bars, restaurants and art galleries.
Other neighborhoods with good nightlife are the old manufactory area near the Russian government building which houses some bars, the area around the Trubnaya metro and around Kuznetsky Most , while the Kurskaya groups the clubs with electronic music. We can also mention the area of the Patriarch's ponds, an area that is teeming with quiet bars.
Clubs and discos in Moscow
The crowd is very mixed. Students, young professionals, techno lovers, tourists all gather at Propaganda. Everyone comes to enjoy the music and have fun. It is one of the few clubs where the dancefloor dominates and there are hardly any tables, apart from a few that overlook the entire space. Propaganda is a restaurant until midnight. You can come earlier for dinner and stay for dancing. After midnight, the staff clears the tables from the dance floor and the whole place turns into a club. The place is different from the usual Moscow restaurant / club hybrids, however, because the atmosphere changes completely from "relaxed restaurant" to "underground electro club". Not to be missed.
There are more areas with different music. In the first area, expect a mix of traditional music and Russian pop songs. In the second, slightly larger area, there is live Russian pop music until 2am. After that it is mostly some kind of electronic music. The club is frequented by beautiful Russian girls around 18-25 years old, stunning students or models, and of course there is a good deal of young Russians, middle-aged men and foreign tourists trying their luck! Unlike many other nightclubs, the Icon is a pure nightclub and not a club turned into a restaurant. In any case, if you like to party in a big club and want to savor the typical Moscow nightlife , this is the perfect solution.
The crowd is the same as in other high-end Moscow clubs. Men are rarely under the age of 35 and are committed to giving the impression that money is not an issue. The women are amazing even by Moscow nightlife - if you want to meet Moscow's super models, this is the place! Ideal if you want to toast with the Moscow elite.
The club is located on two floors. The lower floor is mainly frequented by people hanging out at the bar and is good for conversation. The narrow stairs that perfectly fit the student atmosphere of the club take you to the main floor where the real party takes place, complete with a bedlam and girls dancing on the bar counter. In the summer months there is also an outdoor terrace. The place is always crowded and bouncers unnecessarily queue people - having a table or someone inside can be the key to skipping the queue. Otherwise, you might end up waiting half an hour or more. Come early or come back late if you want to avoid the crowds.
The crowd that frequents this club is quite mixed. People are less trendy and more underground. The place is suitable for afterhours, so most people arrive from 3am onwards.
Immediately upon entering, you will have the feeling that you have come to the local high school graduation prom instead of a real Moscow nightclub. There is no real interior design, but basically just a large hall with a stage and a bar. The crowd is almost entirely made up of teenagers and young people. Not many of the teens speak English, but it probably doesn't matter after all the alcohol. The music ranges from Russian pop and hip-hop to the most famous international hits. Perfect if you want to party and drink alcohol in one of the cheapest clubs in Moscow .
Here too, it's full of beautiful girls and it's also a great place to hit them off, as those who come here are notoriously more approachable. The advice is to be very firm with the girls who approach and to make your intentions clear. If you want to be 100% sure to get in, come at 2am when the club is still uncrowded.
Oblaka plays a mix of Russian and international pop music. Occasionally, as in many other clubs, there are performances by Russian pop singers. As is often the case in these types of clubs, the music and DJ are not the best but the guests don't seem to care.
Moscow's bars and pubs
The bar looks similar but still distinctly different than regular Moscow posh clubs. Most of the people who frequent this place are over 25, and you can find everything from young professionals to creative types to self-proclaimed models. Great if you want to see the "real Muscovites" celebrate without the overblown flashes of wealth. The proposed music is a strange mix of old and new commercial songs and Russian pop.
Downstairs is a large open space that opens its doors wide in the summer. The interior is rustic, yet elegant, with wooden furnishings and plenty of seating. The interior combined with Ugolek's popularity creates a crowded yet intimate atmosphere, especially on weekends. People come to chat, drink and eat. The upstairs bar has a more welcoming atmosphere. It is smaller, with soft lighting and armchairs to be able to relax. On weekends there is a DJ who mixes electronic music and transforms the bar into a relaxed place, ideal for the pre-party.
