Avance 40 McINTOSH for sale with Yeoman Yachts

The Avance 40 was built in Finland and very close to the Nautor’s Swan and Baltic yards. Designed by the famed Sparkman and Stephens naval architects the Avance 40 looks remarkably like the Swans, also designed by Sparkman and Stephens, of the same era.

Originally commissioned in 1984, McINTOSH was sailed around Cape Cod and adjacent islands. In 1990 she was sold. Then in 2015 the present owner purchased McINTOSH and the boat immediately went to Yachting Solutions in Rockland, Maine, for a large refit. Details of the refit are listed below.

With the recent refit and the exceptional care and attention the present owners have lavished on McINTOSH she is in astonishing condition, especially given her age.

general arrangement

Accommodations.

Sleeps 4 in 2 separate sleeping cabins. Sleeps 3 more, 1 in the pilot bunk and 2 on the saloon settees for a total of 7. Varnished teak furniture throughout with teak and holly cabin soles and vinyl covered overhead panels.

Forward Cabin

Located in the bow with a “V” berth and removable filler. Overhead storage lockers port, starboard and forward. Aft to port and starboard are additional lockers. There is a single seat aft to starboard. Storage is under the bunks.

forward head

Located immediately after of the forward cabin on the starboard side. Manual Groco head with holding tank and deck discharge. Fiberglass sink aft with hot and cold pressure water and telephone type shower. Two lockers outboard. One locker under the sink. Teak grate in the sole.

main Saloon

Immediately after of the head is the main saloon. On the port side is a straight settee with a pilot berth outboard of it. Each has fittings for a lee cloth. There is storage behind the settee backrests. Opposite, on the starboard side, is a “U” shaped settee with storage behind the backrest. There are shelves and lockers outboard. On the centerline is a teak table with folding leaves port and starboard. The water tanks are underneath the settees. Forward on the port side and opposite the head is additional storage.

Located after of the main saloon on the starboard side. “U” shaped. There is storage outboard behind black plexiglass sliding doors. There are lockers above the double stainless steel sinks aft to store wet dishes in a rack that drains to the sinks below. Additional lockers are under the sink and forward and inboard. Inboard are 3 shelves. Outboard and forward is a top loading fridge. Outboard and aft is an additional insulated top loading ice box. There is a 3 burner propane stove with oven outboard with a crash bar and eyes to attach a belt for the chef while under way.

navigation station

Located immediately opposite the galley and on the port side. Forward facing. There are drawers forward and underneath the desk. There is a lid on the desk accessing chart storage underneath. Outboard is the electrical panel together with navigation and communication electronics.

Located in the aft end of the boat. Accessed on the port side. Single bunk to port and a single bunk to starboard. Against the forward bulkhead is a fiberglass sink with hot and cold pressure water. Over and under the sink two more lockers. Aft are two lockers underneath the cockpit sole. Another locker is outboard and over the starboard bunk.

The engine space is accessed underneath the companionway steps

Avance 40 designed by Sparkmann and Stevens and built on AB Öja Båtar / Avance Yachts in Finland. Here, the buyer can acquire a real seafarer for little money - but must nevertheless expect that the ship needs an overhaul.   The ship has recently been updated with the following: - The fuel tanks are emptied of old diesel oil, the tanks cleaned and new marine diesel oil is refilled. - There are installed 2 new Varta marine consumable batteries. - 1 new Varta marine starter battery is also ilstalled. - The bottom is cleaned and bottom lubricated. - A new zinc anode is installed on the screw shaft.   Interior design: There are two separate cabins on the shelter. The main living room houses a large pantry arrangement in sharp U-shape at the descent in the SB side distributed with oven, sink, refrigerator and gas stove. Opposite is the very large card table. - From now on, there is a passage with a spacious toilet room to SB, followed by the front cabin with a double bed in v-shape .. - A classic and well-functioning interior, where everything is beautifully clad with nice wooden abatement of Swan quality. Avance 40 is an extremely fast and comfortable tour boat, which with its beautiful lines still draws long glances from connoisseurs...   The boat is sold cheaply as the owner is motivated for a quick sale. The buyer must expect a bit of work to get this beautiful and very rare copy up to date, so here is the opportunity to make a good deal. Needs a new teak deck within near future. Boat Review: Comparing 40 foot cruisers

Paulo Pernão of Interesting Sailboats takes a look at the new mass production 40-foot sailboat offers: the Bavaria 42 C and the Beneteau Oceanis 40.1:

Judging by the name the Bavaria is not a 40ft but a 42ft and that is misleading. In fact the Oceanis is 1mm longer (hull length) than the Bavaria.

Both boats look good and very successfully manage to disguise the high freeboard and the big interior volume, not to call “fatness”. I would say the Beneteau looks just a bit better, meaning more sportive than the Bavaria, but I admit that some will prefer the more sober and elegant Bavaria look.

Both boats have about the same length being the Bavaria in what regards hull length 1mm shorter (11.98m to 11.99) and about the same LOA, both boats with bowsprit (12.90 to 12.87). The Bavaria bowsprit is optional; it remains to be seen if the one on the Oceanis 40.1 will be standard or also optional.

The Bavaria is beamier (4.29 to 4.18m) with the Oceanis 40.1 slightly less beamier than the previous model, the 41.1, that notwithstanding the name is 1mm shorter in length. The Bavaria has a bigger displacement (9678kg to 8180). This is due partially to the bigger ballast (2698kg to 2007kg with a draft of 2.10m to 2.17).

I confess that this difference in weight is quite intriguing because due to hull building techniques, the Bavaria should be lighter and stronger for the same weight. Bavaria uses vacuum infusion and polyester resins on a sandwich hull having Divinycell foam as core and a structural grid bonded to the hull.

Beneteau uses similar resins but on a monolithic hull with a structural inner moulding bonded to the hull. Only on deck the technologies are similar, using both a sandwich composite using injection technology.

For the same weight the Bavaria should be stronger and considerably stiffer than the Oceanis so it is hard to explain why the Bavaria weights 807kg more (already discounting the difference in ballast weight).

, was looking for any insite on things to look for with this model. I have just looked at a norseman 447 that was not in as good shape as led to believe by a Brooker long drive very disappointing we liked that but don't have 2 years to everything, to have a worth way less then the sum of its should have asked here and saved my disappointment how do you make an offer at less then half the asking price

decks looking for should be a priority, then the and condition of the . Does it leak and what's it made of? How to replace when it does leak. I've always liked the Baba 40, but be prepared for lots of woodwork.

. He ended up reglassing the decks and painting. Also the is iron as I and a lot of them have needed to be replaced. I believe there is a Baba owners group over at Yahoo Groups. I would go ask your question in there. I bet you'd get a ton of useful info.

The of those is amazing. It's like being in the Russian Tea Room or something. Would cost a small fortune, or maybe a big one at this point, to build today. And the layout is just about the best and most functional you'll find. Amazing cabins.

. One just completed a non-stop, unassisted handed . Best to use a good , especially one with experience with Babas, Tashibas and (somewhat) Valiants.

soon. We have lived aboard her in the eastern for the last 7 yrs, she has been a great boat for us. She's fully equipped as a comfortable cruising boat; , new , good decks, low time 8 kw , good , new chainplates, heavily rigged w/ Norseman fittings, over $10k worth of spare aboard. We haven't got the website up yet, but we'll be listing her here in the classifieds here soon.

can easily be a 2-3 year killing your dream. Hold the line at "the boat must be useable NOW".
On a Baba, I would look closely at the and condition... which is hard to do. Any under the floor are suspect and may be very difficult to replace. There are workarounds though. Plastic tanks inside the originals etc. Any tank that "just happens to be empty" treat with great caution.
Some Baba's didnt have decks. More Tashiba version of the Baba didnt also.
If it has teak decks, it's very hard to tell if they have or not in the . If I made an offer on a boat with teak decks that is very old, part of my offer would be to allow drilling a few holes (inside closets etc) from the underside to test for and filling them with .
I believe Ta Shing did the same thing as Hans Christian did, the decks with individual squares of ply or balsa... so any water ingress (in theory) cant move more than an inch or two. Not sure about that though. - Elmore Leonard

coring, tanks and are the top three as with any Taiwanese boats. Poor quality stainless fittings and welds are somewhat notorious so be suspicious of anything that fits that description. Check all components, fittings, bolts and screws etc for evidence of crevice as failure of critical components could be fatal. Depending on tank location they may not be that difficult to replace or . Engines on any boat are a pain as is coring but most times not critical. As with any boat check the twice. Positives are no apparent blister issues, solid hulls and some of the best joinery in the world and drive like a freight train in brisk winds. One negative is you'll never get anything done dockside as everyone will be stopping to talk to you about your boat.
