Just 130 miles east of Puerto Rico you will find the British Virgin Islands - a beautiful archipelago of unique islands in the heart of the Caribbean Sea . It feels like summer all year around her, the sun is always shining and the waters are always warm.

Today a British overseas territory, these beautiful islands have been claimed throughout their history by the Dutch, the Danes, the French, and the British. The capital is Road Town on the main island of Tortola , from where you can go sailing by chartering a catamaran in the BVI and set off on a unique sailing adventure. Also worth visiting is the Virgin Gorda island - home to the Baths, a labyrinth of beachside boulders.

The bulk of the local population lives on the islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda, while Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, and The Settlement are mostly visited by boating lovers. Cruising through the area you will see multiple islands to discover in this beautiful part of the Caribbean Sea: a catamaran charter in the British Virgin Islands is a must if you want to call yourself a true sailor.

What is included in a catamaran rental in the BVI?

Catamaran rentals in the BVI vary considerably in the builder, length of time, and price of the charter. For those who have a sailing license, bareboat charters are available and for those who don't then you can rent a boat that comes with a captain and even a crew.

It is quite popular to rent a boat through Click&Boat that includes a captain to take care of everything while you enjoy your time out on the water. Many of our listings include added or optional extras too. From snorkeling and diving equipment to jet skis and wakeboards.

When booking with Click&Boat, take advantage of our internal messaging system which allows you to send messages directly to boat owners to talk about itineraries, prices, and extras, and ask any questions you may have. You can also use our expert sailing advisors, ready on deck to help you plan your time on board.

Where to sail during your BVI catamaran charter

We have plenty of catamarans available for rent in the British Virgin Islands for your next yacht charter: find and book your favorite type of boat depending on your wants and needs for your sailing vacation.

Once you're on board your catamaran, it's time to start exploring the islands. One of the best things about sailing in the BVI is that there are so many anchorages to choose from. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to relax or a lively beach with plenty of bars and restaurants, you'll find it here.

Some of our favorite anchorages in the BVI include:

  • The Baths: This unique anchorage is located on Virgin Gorda and is home to huge boulders eroded into natural pools. It's an excellent spot for swimming and exploring, and there's even a beach bar where you can enjoy a rum punch or two.
  • Jost Van Dyke: This small island is home to some of the best beaches in the BVI, including White Bay Beach which is renowned for its perfect powdery sand and turquoise water. There are also several beach bars and restaurants, making it the perfect spot to spend a day or two.
  • Anegada: This remote island is a haven for snorkellers and scuba divers, with its pristine reefs and crystal clear waters. If you're looking to escape the crowds, Anegada is the place for you.

Whether you're a seasoned sailor looking for a bareboat catamaran charter or a first-time charterer, sailing catamarans in the British Virgin Islands is an experience you'll never forget.

How much does it cost to rent a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands?

A catamaran charter cost can vary depending on certain factors. Some of these factors include the season in which you decide to charter, the size of the traveling party, and the duration of your charter. During the summer, June through August, yacht rental prices may be a lot lower compared to the BVI's high season during the winter months.

Other factors include the model and age of the catamaran as well as whether you choose to hire a captain or not. So be sure to consider all of these factors when finding your dream catamaran.

A catamaran rental in the BVIs starts at $485 for a full day, for weekly charters expect to pay between $2,500 per week to $6,000 or more, depending on the factors mentioned above.

You can also search for specific catamaran brands on our platform, for example, you can rent a Fountaine Pajot for $953/day.

The harbors in the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands offer some of the best sailing spots in the world. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway on your own or with friends and family, the BVI’s are perfect for a catamaran charter. There are many different harbors and marinas where you can dock your catamaran, each offering a unique experience.

Our favorite places to dock your catamaran in the British Virgin Islands:

  • The Bitter End Yacht Club - Located on the island of Virgin Gorda, Bitter End Yacht Club is a great place for beginner sailors because it has calm waters and offers all kinds of sailing resources. It also has two restaurants and lots of watersports activities like kayaking and paddle boarding.
  • Leverick Bay Marina - This marina is located on Virgin Gorda and has great facilities that include fuel, electricity, water, laundry services, showers, bathrooms, and more. It’s also close to some of the best beaches in the area like Savannah Bay and Prickly Pear Island.
  • Nanny Cay Marina - This marina is located on Tortola Island and is one of the most popular spots in the BVI for cruisers because it has plenty of amenities like shops, restaurants, bars, a pool, and more.
  • Soper's Hole Marina - Soper's Hole Marina is located on the west end of Tortola Island and is known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of neighboring islands like Jost Van Dyke and St John’s. It also offers yacht services like fuel, water, electricity, and laundry services as well as restaurants and bars where you can relax after a day out on the water.

Here are a few other highly recommended ports and marinas to start your next sailing adventure:

  • Road Harbor - The main harbor in Road Town, big enough to also allow cruise ships to visit the island of Tortola!
  • Fort Burt Marina & Road Reef Marina - Nearby marinas in Tortola, also make an excellent starting point.
  • Leverick Bay Marina, Bitter End Yacht Club Marina, and Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor - All located on the island of Virgin Gorda if you are planning to start your trip there.

Renting a catamaran with or without a skipper

If you're looking to charter a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands, you'll want to consider whether or not you want a skipper to come along with you. A skipper can provide valuable knowledge and expertise, making your charter experience more enjoyable. Additionally, you can also choose to have your sailing vacation be a crewed charter. On the other hand, if you're an experienced sailor, going on a bareboat charter is a great way to have complete control and freedom over your catamaran cruise.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit the British Virgin Islands varies. The area's busiest time of year is the winter but September to November can be a great time to visit to avoid the busier season and make the most of lower prices.

Hurricane season is from June to November which is certainly not ideal for sailors. Keen sailors should visit the British Virgin Islands in March when the BVI Spring Regatta is held annually.

Divers should also plan their trip for winter or spring when underwater visibility levels are the best as the summer does not have great visibility.

In regards to the temperature, don't be put off by the thought of it being winter. The reason the British Virgin Islands are so popular in the winter is that even from November to April, the month with the lowest high temperature still peaks at 82°F. It is truly summer all year round in the British Virgin Islands.

Explore the British Virgin Islands with a catamaran charter

Offering a true kaleidoscope of Caribbean sights and sounds, a catamaran charter is the best way to explore this prized region. Whether you decide to charter a catamaran for a week with a skipper or simply want a few days anchored across long sandy beaches, the British Virgin Islands offers plenty of quiet seclusion on luxurious catamaran decks. Most visitors arrive on Beef Island, before heading out in quite literally any direction. Taking in coral reefs, shipwrecks, and the world's best sunsets, you'll find your catamaran well-provisioned for smooth sailing throughout your stay.

With their restoration, the British Virgin Islands is now more popular than ever! The BVIs are best experienced from the ocean, and a catamaran is an ideal vehicle for seeing these stunning islands. In a BVI Bareboat Charter, a bareboat catamaran offers all the space and stability you could ever want, including deserted islands, floating bars, and sunken ships to explore. Following the hurricane devastation, Willy T's bar is restored, the boats are newer, and the hotels have all been renovated. The islands are renowned for having perfect sailing conditions and are some of the world's top dive sites.

Why should I rent a catamaran?

Catamarans are the ideal vessel for exploring the British Virgin Islands' many attractions because of their broad beam and shallow draft, which provide you unparalleled access to remote coves and beaches. They also make for the ideal launching point for several snorkeling excursions.

Enjoy this yachting heaven while you unwind, sunbathe, and amuse guests. You can take pleasure in sailing your catamaran on your own, or you can add a skipper to your rental so you can unwind.

Island-hop for a week in the Caribbean

The most romantic experience with a catamaran has to involve island-hopping. An experienced skipper will offer the best island-hopping itinerary, taking you through alluring coves and hidden island gems. In the south, a stop-off in Norman Island offers an unmissable first anchorage with plentiful seafood to get you off to a great start. For luxury crabs, Cooper Island is both a foodie and a diver's heaven. North Sound to the east offers unbeatable natural views of rock formations and glistening shores. Jost van Dyke to the west hosts spectacular swimming and evening entertainment.

Rent a Catamaran with a Skipper

If you would like to dive into the full luxurious experience of yachting, consider getting a catamaran rental with a captain/crew! Having a skilled professional on your charter can make all of the difference for your sailing vacation. Especially, when renting a sailing catamaran versus a motor, since they are typically more technical to handle.

If you are a sailor, you may take advantage of the sailing knowledge of a fellow sailor, and exchange tips and tricks on sailing in the British Virgin Islands. Another advantage to having a local captain/crew on board is they know the waters well, so they can take you to the best boating spots and maybe give a few recommendations for your time on land.

How much does it cost to rent a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands?

A BVI catamaran charter costs, on average, $1100 per day to rent. A weekly BVI catamaran rental typically costs $30133. The cost of fuel (which could be much more on a motorboat compared to a sailboat) and additional extras you choose to add to tailor your sailing yacht charter experience are just a few of the variables that affect the total cost of your boating adventure in the British Virgin Islands.

Where to take your catamaran rental in the BVI?

The Virgin Islands has an incredible amount of destinations to visit and sights to see, so if you get a chance to charter a catamaran for a longer period, this destination would be best to get a weekend or weekly charter and explore the Caribbean!

Here are some places to consider when planning your itinerary:

  • Virgin Gorda
  • Gorda Sound
  • Prickly Pear Island
  • Eustatia Sound
  • Coral Gardens
  • Dog Islands
  • Kitchen Point beach
  • Loblolly Bay
  • Cane Garden Bay
  • Monday Islands
  • Jost Van Dyke

Peter Island- Enjoy the beautiful beach at Deadman's Bay. In the evening, you can find anchorages at Whelk Bay, White Bay, Key Bay, and Great Harbour

For incredible snorkeling destinations on your itinerary stop by these spots to see amazing coral and marine life:

  • Cooper Island
  • Indians and the Caves at Norman Island
  • Guana Island

When is the best time to go?

The best time for boating in the British Virgin Islands is generally considered to be the winter months, from December through March. This is when the weather is cooler and the wind and waves are calmer. The summer months can be quite hot and the waters can be choppy.

Recent Charter

We just got back after spending 10 days on Another Perfect Season Power Catamaran out of Virgin Charter Yachts on Tortola. Everything was perfect! Alexia and her staff were top notch! They greeted us warmly to show us around and completed a check out as we took this beautiful boat out on a bareboat charter; made sure we had everything we needed (even a birthday cake for one we were celebrating), AND checked in with us mid-week to make sure everything was going okay. By the way, the blue boat in Virgin Charter Yachts is a picture of Another Perfect Season. It is brand new and so roomy with many modern touches. 3 couples had plenty of room and privacy for the week as we motored around the islands enjoying different beaches, bars, and restaurants. This was our first experience with spending time on a bareboat charter-it won’t be our last. We will be back to visit BVI on Another Perfect Season ASAP!!!! Thank you Alexia and Virgin Charter Yachts for everything!

The BVIs is a beautiful British overseas territory located in the Caribbean and is considered by most to be a prime yachting location on account of its reef-lined beaches. This island consists of around 60 islands in total - four main ones and many different smaller ones. In the British Virgin Islands, catamaran charters give you the freedom to visit as many islands, beaches, and cays as you wish.

The capital of the British Virgin Islands is Road Town, located on the largest island Tortola. The capital along with Sage National Park and the Baths on Virgin Gorda are also worth visiting. With so many places to choose from, we believe that you can’t possibly be disappointed with a British Virgin Islands catamaran charter with Océans Évasion in this prime boating location. You are bound to find what you’re looking for!

Each island is unique and has its very own places to visit and see! If you’re not sure what island to pick, here is a list of each island and some places to visit within it!

The largest island of the BVI, Tortola, is composed of a beautiful long chain of steep hills uninterrupted by a valley. The lush green mountains, sheltered harbors, and powdery white sand beaches make Tortola a favorite for many.

Here is a list of things to do in Tortola:

  • Smuggler’s Cove Beach
  • Cane Garden Bay
  • Soper’s Hole
  • Sage Mountain National Park

Next up, Virgin Gorda, located 80 miles east of Puerto Rico, is the gem of the BVIs. In the rocky labyrinth of enormous boulders, crystal clear pools, and seawater-flooded grottoes, there is plenty to do at sea and on land.

Here are some places you won’t want to miss:

  • Gorda Peak National Park
  • North Sound
  • Jost Van Dyke is home to White Bay Beach, one of the most beautiful white-sand beaches you can visit in the BVIs.

If you love snorkeling, then Anegada Island is the place for you! Visit:

  • Horseshoe Reef
  • Loblolly Bay
  • Cow Wreck Bay Beach

With so many islands to choose from, here is a list of other islands and places for you to visit during your BVI charter vacation.

On Salt Island:

  • RMS Rhone Shipwrecks

On Norman Island:

  • Treasure Caves
  • Santa Monica Rock

On Peter Island:

  • Deadman’s Bay

How much does it cost to rent a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands?

There are many factors to consider when chartering a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands. The most important factor is the size of the vessel. A bigger catamaran will cost more to rent, but it will also be able to accommodate more people. Another factor to consider is the time of year. The high season for chartering a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands is during the summer months, so expect to pay more if you're chartering during this time. Finally, the length of your rental can also affect the price. If you're looking to save money, consider renting for a shorter period of time.

With Océans Evasion, catamaran prices can range between $400 and $5,300.

The harbors in the British Virgin Islands

There are many different harbors and marinas in the British Virgin Islands where you can dock your catamaran rental. Each one has its own unique atmosphere and there is sure to be one that is perfect for you.

  • Road Town, Tortola is the capital of the BVI and is a bustling hub of activity. There are many shops and restaurants to explore, as well as a lively nightlife. The marina here is well-protected and is a great place to start or end your charter.
  • Jost Van Dyke is a small island with a big personality. This is a popular spot for nightlife, with many bars and clubs to enjoy. The Great Harbour Marina is the perfect place to moor your catamaran rental and explore all that Jost Van Dyke has to offer.
  • Virgin Gorda is known for its stunning beaches, including the world-famous Baths. The marina here is large and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Moor your catamaran rental here and enjoy all that Virgin Gorda has to offer.
  • Anegada is the only coral island in the BVI and is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. The Anegada Reef Club Marina is the perfect place to moor your catamaran rental and enjoy all that Anegada has to offer.

Whether you are looking for a bustling hub of activity or a quiet island retreat, there is sure to be a harbor or marina in the British Virgin Islands that is perfect for you.

Renting a catamaran with or without a skipper

When thinking about your catamaran charter, you may be wondering whether to book with a captain and crew or a bareboat charter. Chartering with a captain and crew is a great idea if you would like to get the full luxurious experience of a catamaran rental in the BVIs. Food and drinks will be prepared by the crew while the captain sails to your next stop!

If you want to practice your navigation skills and have a valid boating license, then a bareboat charter is a great idea. Check with the boat owner to make sure your boating license is valid for the boat.

When is the best time to go?

Generally, the weather in the BVI is hot and windy with frequent partial cloud cover. The air temperature ranges throughout the year from around 73°F from January until March, to about 88°F in August. The water temperature reaches its peak in September, when it is about 84°F, but drops down to about 78°F in February.

The BVI’s rainiest month is September, which usually sees around 3 inches of precipitation, and the driest month is March when there is typically around 0.3 inches of rain. The windiest time of year in the BVIs falls in July when the average wind speeds are around 16 mph, but this drops down to around 12 mph by around October.

In general, it is a good idea to go to the BVI from September until November, just before the hordes of tourists rush to the Caribbean to escape the cold temperatures of winter in other places. The lower number of tourists leads to lower boat prices and also less crowded beaches, which is ideal for boating holidays. However, if you do plan on sailing during this period, you should keep a close eye on the weather forecast, as it coincides with the end of hurricane season which runs from June until November.

If you plan on diving during your sailing vacation in the BVI, you should aim to go during the winter or spring as summer diving expeditions are often ruined by poor visibility. Another good time for sailors to visit these idyllic islands is in March when it is possible to enjoy the BVI Spring Regatta.

This is your roadmap to an unforgettable journey.

What is a catamaran?

It is a type of boat, but instead of one hull, it has two. A catamaran with these hulls is like a double-decker bus of the sea. It is also more stable than a regular boat.

Here are some facts about catamarans:

  • They are stable compared to regular boats. The wide stance makes them steady. Just like a seesaw, the further apart the ends are, the harder it is to tip over.
  • They are spacious. When renting a private boat, you get a lot of deck space for sunbathing. There are hotel-like cabins. There are also dedicated areas for alfresco dining and water toys.
  • They have a shallow draft. Unlike large cruise ships, catamaran yachts can go closer to shorelines without damaging coral reefs. So, you can access hidden covers and snorkel in shallow waters.
  • Less water, less drag. Unlike bulky monohulls, catamarans have less water “belly” to push through the waves. Thus, they need less power (sails or engines) to zoom around, making them more efficient.

What makes a yacht charter even more special?

The sense of freedom and adventure is unparalleled. It is also about getting a personalized sailing itinerary. So, you can explore the best BVI beaches which the common tourist crowd cannot go to.

Moreover, it is not just a simple vacation but a holistic experience . Feel the thrill of trying out different water sports. Be refreshed by vibrant marine life such as dolphin watching, “swimming with pigs”, and turtles.

You can also get a taste of fresh seafood dishes prepared by your private crew. Lastly, stop by lively beach bars for a taste of local nightlife and well-crafted cocktails. Have you heard of the famous cocktail “Painkiller?”

Why rent a British Virgin Islands catamaran charter?

There is nothing wrong with a traditional sailboat. But, if you can take your island vacation to the next level, then why not?

Here are the advantages of choosing a chartered yacht in the BVI:

  • A power catamaran or motor yacht is like a hybrid floating hotel and a sleek sports car. You get the best of both worlds: powerful engines and world-class amenities.
  • No waiting time. When going on a crewed yacht, you can go island hopping between Caribbean islands on your terms. Unlike a group tour or cruise ship, there are no other guests that you have to wait for.
  • Distance becomes your playground. Visit the Baths on Virgin Gorda in the morning. Then, catch the sunset on Jost Van Dyke in the afternoon. You can even tick off each island in the BVI if you want to.
  • Anchoring made easy. Your yacht crew will not struggle with traditional anchors and lines. They can drop the controls for effortless anchoring. So, no need to feel pressured that you need to help in pulling the anchor and sails, too.
  • British Virgin Islands catamaran rentals are built for luxury. They are typically spacious, well-equipped, and airconditioned. The powerful engines can support even the onboard kitchen, sun loungers, and jacuzzi.
  • No need to worry about unpredictable weather. No more “rainy day” blues. With a powerful luxury yacht, you can keep on sailing through the Caribbean Sea.

If you want speed, flexibility, luxury, and comfort, then a boat charter in the BVI fits you perfectly.

BVI Catamaran Charter FAQs

1. how many people can a catamaran charter accommodate.

It depends. Luxury private yachts come in different sizes . They can accommodate anywhere from 2 to 12 guests comfortably.

Imagine cozy trips for couples on small boats or spacious vacations for friends or families on bigger catamarans.

Tip: Consider your group size and desired level of privacy when choosing the perfect size.

2. How far can you travel on a catamaran charter?

Your island-hopping dreams have no limits. BVI catamarans typically have a cruising speed of 8-10 knots. Thus, you can comfortably explore nearby islands like Jost Van Dyke or Norman Island within a day.

For longer journeys, from BVI to USVI or vice versa, plan for a multi-day charter itinerary. Remember, fuel range and weather conditions also play a role in determining your itinerary.

Don’t hesitate to compare prices and find the option that fits your budget without compromising on the experience.

4. What is the best size of catamaran to sail in the BVI?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this. The important thing is to consider your priorities.

A 40 to 50-foot catamaran offers excellent maneuverability for exploring hidden coves. It also provides a cozy atmosphere for smaller groups.

Larger vessels, 50ft and above , boast expansive decks and luxurious amenities. Plus, there is more onboard space for bigger groups or those seeking ultimate comfort.

Ultimately, choose a size that balances your desired space, budget, and sailing goals.

Choosing the perfect yacht is never easy. But, with proper guidance from an expert yacht charter broker, planning a vacation and choosing the right boat charter should go smoothly:

  • What kind of amenities are important for you and your guests (e.g., water sports equipment, spa)?
  • What is your budget range?
  • What islands do you want to explore?

These are just a few questions to answer when planning for your vacation. Once you have a clearer picture, browse reputable charter companies, compare fleets, and ask questions. They’ll help you find the ideal vessel and curate an unforgettable itinerary.

6. What is the best catamaran charter to rent for a BVI sailing vacation?

There’s no single “best” catamaran. It’s all about finding the perfect match for your travel needs and desires. Choose what’s important: big decks, fancy cabins, affordable choices, and extras like kayaks or fishing gear.
