In partnership with Murray River Paddlesteamers, Riverboats 2023 will once again offer a limited series of intimate sideshows aboard the historic PS Pevensey paddlesteamer. Music fans will be given the opportunity to cruise down the river to the soundtrack of Alice Skye, Felix Riebl, Andy Golledge, WILSN, Bones & Jones and Watty Thompson . Having sold out in just six days last year, tickets to Riverboats 2023 are likely to be in high demand. Stoneking is a truly exciting thing, and we can't wait to get back to Echuca-Moama in a few months' time ”

Marlon Williams, Spiderbait and CW Stoneking Will Headline the 2023 Riverboats Music Festival

With music festivals popping up in every corner of the country with frequency, especially in these post-COVID-restrictions times, an event has to be mighty special to warrant travelling intrastate or interstate. Riverboats Music Festival is one such event, and the reason is right there in its name. A mainstay of Victoria's Echuca-Moama region that'll celebrate its 11th instalment in 2023, it usually hosts its fest on the banks of the Murray River — and includes intimate sideshows on the PS Pevensey paddlesteamer.

Due to 2022's flooding of the event's usual home at Aquatic Reserve, the 2023 fest is actually moving to Echuca's Victoria Park Reserve when it returns from Friday, February 17–Sunday, February 19. But the music on a riverboat part still remains, as ticketed separately. So, you can head to the region for three days of tunes as part of the broader event, spend your time on the river, or mix and match both.

Heading the on-land lineup: Marlon Williams, Spiderbait, CW Stoneking & His Primitive Horn Orchestra and The Whitlams, plus The Rolling Stones Revue featuring Adalita, Phil Jamieson and Tex Perkins. That's a whole heap of big-name talent from across Australia and New Zealand right there, and it's just the beginning of the 2023 bill.

Also on the roster, and playing the paddlesteamer as well, are Alice Skye, Felix Riebl, Andy Golledge, WILSN, Bones & Jones and Watty Thompson. If you go for the boat option, you'll hear their sets while cruising down the river, in the kind of fest experience you truly don't get at every event.

"Echuca-Moama has gone through an incredibly challenging period over the last few weeks, and our hearts go out to all those affected by the recent floods," said Festival Director Dave Frazer, announcing the lineup.

"Riverboats has been part of the Echuca-Moama community for over tehn years now, and whilst we're sad to be leaving Aquatic Reserve next year, we can't wait to put on a spectacular show at Victoria Park in a few months time," he continued.

If you're keen, the last festival sold out in just six days, so nabbing tickets ASAP is recommended.

Riverboats 2023 set for a new location

Echuca’s Aquatic Reserve will not be the stomping ground for next year’s award-winning Riverboats Music Festival.

Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content

The reserve, which is currently underwater, has unsurprisingly been deemed an unsuitable space for the 11th edition of the festival.

But as to where the crowd of 6000-strong ticket-holders will be relocated to remains unknown.

Festival director David Frazer said despite the venue change, organisers were committed to ensuring the festival would go ahead.

“It’s heartbreaking to think that Echuca-Moama has just got back on their feet after all the COVID-19 restrictions and now there is flooding,” Mr Frazer said.

“But we will keep on rolling with the punches and keep pushing forward.

“While we are giving the Aquatic Reserve a break for a year, our dates haven’t changed and hopefully the festival can contribute to Echuca-Moama’s tourism industry — that has suffered greatly over the past few years.”

Along with the change of venue, the lineup announcement has been postponed for a second time, until November 21.

Mr Frazer said that while the lineup had already been confirmed, they wanted to be considerate towards those battling the current flooding crisis.

“There’s no reason for us postponing the lineup other than we want to give the council and the community the time to focus on the current situation,” he said.

“Everybody has a lot on their plate at the moment and we don’t want to add to that.”

Riverboats 2023 will be held February 17 to 19, with the venue to be announced in late 2022.

Riverboats Music Festival

Riverboats-Night-Shot-Approved

The Riverboats Music Festival is the Murray River’s premiere contemporary music event. Staged in the twin-towns of Echuca-Moama, our Festival takes place under towering river red gums in a natural amphitheatre next to the mighty Murray. Historic paddlesteamers meander past all weekend, and occasionally the cockatoos get a bit raucous at sunset. We have one stage and plenty of room for dancing, brilliant artists and delicious regional food and wine. It’s probably one of the prettiest, inexpensive, laid-back, family-friendly festivals in Australia – you’ll love it.

The Labor Government is supporting the Riverboats Music Festival through its $20 million Regional Events Fund and the $8 million Live Music Restart program to help deliver a fantastic event at this year’s temporary location at Victoria Park Reserve.

Stoneking and His Primitive Horn Orchestra, The Rolling Stones Revue featuring Adalita, Phil Jamieson & Tex Perkins, The Whitlams, Felix Riebl, Alice Skye, Tami Neilson, and more.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

echuca riverboats festival 2023

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

echuca riverboats festival 2023

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

echuca riverboats festival 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

echuca riverboats festival 2023

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

echuca riverboats festival 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

echuca riverboats festival 2023

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

echuca riverboats festival 2023

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
