- Please be advised that there is a fee for parking in Maʻalaea boat harbor lots along the waterfront and at the parking lot at the Maʻalaea Harbor Shops which fronts Maui Ocean Center. Pacific Whale Foundation is located in the Harbor Shops courtyard. If your party includes mobility challenged passengers, please park in the handicapped spots just in front of our Ocean Store. Then send a member of your party to check in at the store and to get further directions on driving to the boat.

We have been on several Sunset Cocktail Cruises on Maui over the past decade but this was by far our favourite. The captain and crew were super friendly, knowledgeable & accommodating…they serve everything right to you ... ! Ukulele Dave was a great addition as well! Ocean Spirit Cruises provides daily sailing trips from Cairns to Michaelmas Cay aboard a luxury 32m sailing catamaran. This day tour spends four (4) hours at Michaelmas Cay and is suited to swimmers, snorkelers and families but not certified divers. There is no certified diving offered in conjunction with this product.
Ocean Spirit Cruises do provide introductory scuba diving from the beach at added cost. This is an excellent way to try first-time scuba diving in the shallow waters a short walk from the beach.
The journey is just as important as the destination!
Michaelmas Cay is a great destination for swimmers and those who are not confident in the open water. The sand cay is surrounded by shallow, protected waters which are home to a multitude of marine life, including anemone fish and some of the largest giant clams you will ever see. Water entry is from the beach itself, so you can enter at your own pace. The cay is home to a wide array of seabirds, making it a great destination for bird watchers. Non-swimmers will enjoy relaxing on the cay’s warm, sandy beach and taking in the views over the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, from on board Ocean Spirit.
Semi-Submersible – There’s also the opportunity for travelers to immerse themselves in the underwater world, while staying dry, with a complimentary semi-submersible tour in the waters just off the Cay.
Sea turtles are often spotted surfacing for air from the beach. Shallow crystal clear water, Michaelmas Cay is a perfect beach day with beautiful coral very close to the beach.
Ocean Spirit has been running Michaelmas Cay tours for over 25 years and in August 2013 was taken over by the award-winning Quicksilver Group. The catamaran has spacious indoor cabins as well as outdoor seating and provides a smooth, comfortable journey to and from the reef. Of course, actual sailing is weather dependent, but you’ll feel the wind in your hair and the romance of the open sea regardless. Lots of inclusions in this day tour.

Check-in for the Ocean Spirit day tour is at their counter inside the Reef Fleet Terminal from 7.30am. Boarding commences at the boat from 7.45am with an 8.30am departure from Cairns. Complimentary tea and coffee is served on boarding. Welcome and safety presentations are provided on the way to the reef, as is an informative marine biologist slide show and presentation.
Travel time from Cairns to Michaelmas Cay is around two (2) hours, so you’ll arrive around 10.30am, with up to four (4) hours to enjoy the cay, Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef. Semi-submersible tours operate throughout the day and you can snorkel from the boat or the beach. There’s the option of introductory scuba diving too (see diving tab for more information) with no experience necessary. Lunch is served from 12-1.30pm and the boat departs around 2.30pm, getting back into Cairns at 5pm.
There is no certified diving available on Ocean Spirit Cruises. However, there is the option for those wanting to try diving for the first time to book an introductory dive. No experience is necessary: all equipment and instruction provided. You will need to complete and pass a dive medical on board and some medical conditions (such as asthma) will preclude you from diving.
INTRODUCTORY DIVES: Michaelmas Cay is a great place to try an introductory scuba dive, thanks to its shallow, protected waters and abundant marine life. All introductory dives are guided by professional dive personnel and all equipment and instruction is provided on-board Ocean Spirit, on your way to the cay. Participants must be over 12 years of age and will receive a certificate of recognition on the completion of their introductory dive.
Snorkeling:
Michaelmas Cay is a great place for young children, the elderly and non-confident swimmers to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. The sand cay has generous beaches that slope gently into the water. The water surrounding the cay is quite shallow and protected from open ocean currents, making it a comfortable place to float around and admire the marine life below. Buoyancy vests are provided with this tour, as are your mask, snorkel and fins. Wetsuits / lycra suits are available for hire on board (and are highly recommended for sun protection). Ocean Spirit provides snorkel equipment and safety briefings on the way to Michaelmas Cay. All snorkelling is done from the cay itself, with regular transfers provided between the catamaran and the cay aboard the glass bottom boat.

Tour Notes:
Remember to try any form of scuba diving everyone needs to be medically fit with no asthma and not be taking any prescription medication. PADI recommends allowing up to 24 hours after diving before flying in an airplane. Some tour operators have a no refund policy for any dives not completed for whatever reason. Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons. It is highly recommended that passengers take out full comprehensive travel insurance for all tours and travel arrangements.

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “ Fit to dive ” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.

A great way to spend your day is out at sea. And there’s no place better to do that, than Mirabelllo Bay. With its small islands, deep blue sea, unique formation of land full of coves with crystal clear water which takes your breath away. Book one of our Sailing trips which are totally customisable, or we can tailor one which suits your needs and taste.
Short trip following the coast, will take us to some of the most secluded coves of the gulf. With crystal clear water so inviting, you will not be able to resist but to dive in. Masks and snorkels will be available, or just swim around and build up an appetite for our refreshment, fruit and snacks which will await for you once you are back onboard, to relax and enjoy them, and the scenery. After all the fun is over its time to head back, with memories that will last a life time.
We will start our day with a cruise along the coast line around Spinalonga island towards Kolokytha Peninsula. Where we will anchor in one of the best bays of the area, so you can enjoy a morning swim or just relax under the warm sun with some refreshments and local greek fruit. Then we can start our cruise to one of the small fishing villages or the main city to enjoy your lunch and some shopping. Time for one more dip in the sea and some snorkelling before heading back to our departure point.

Dave Warren was the naval architect involved in the formal nautical design work for OCEAN SPIRIT. Dave Warren is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. Built by Southern Ocean Yachts this vessel was completed in the country of Australia. She was successfully launched in Kincumber Nsw in 1988 before being delivered to the owner. The hull was built out of composite. The sailing yacht superstructure component is fabricated extensively from composite. With a width of 13.5 m / 44.3 ft OCEAN SPIRIT has open internal space. A fairly shallow draught of 1.8m (5.9ft) determines the list of worldwide marinas she can berth in, depending on their minimum characteristics.

Welcome to Ocean Spirit Cruises
After a 2 hour motorised sail on board the 32 meter sailing Catamaran, Ocean Spirit, you will arrive at Michaelmas Cay where there is so much to see and do. Enjoy snorkelling in the cay’s protected shallow waters, try an introductory scuba dive in the fringing reefs, cruise in the semi-sub for a diver’s view of the reef, watch the fish feeding presentation, observe the bird life or just chill out on Ocean Spirit’s spacious decks or on the beach. Throughout the day, the ‘beach buggy shuttle’ will transfer you between Ocean Spirit and the beach.
Please check-in at the Ocean Spirit/Great Adventures reservations counter inside the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal on 1 Spence St between 7:30 and 8:00am. Ocean Spirit departs the marina at 8:30am. Please note: Presentation of a valid photo ID or the credit card used to book is required for verification purposes at check-in. If you have selected the "Pay On Board" option you must reconfirm your booking within 24 hours of travel by contacting our reservations team. If not, Quicksilver Connections reserves the right to cancel your booking.

Scuba diving
Ocean Spirit offers guests the chance to experience the fun and immersive art of scuba diving during their one day tour. You will get to see the reef from a new point of view as you enjoy the most amazing type of encounter with the Great Barrier Reef. No experience is necessary to take a fully supervised, guided introductory dive. The only requirements are that divers are over 12 years of age, pass the onboard medical questionnaire and participate in our 30-minute dive brief! Take part in this fun activity that will allow you to immerse yourself into the vibrant reefs for a unique and awesome experience.
Snorkelling
You can snorkel right from the beach during your trip with Ocean Spirit! The sheltered reefs around the cay provide a safe and comfortable place from which to explore the underwater world. Swim among colourful fish, vast corals and even perhaps a sea turtle or two. Lycra suits are included, and guests can also opt to join a guided snorkel tour for a next-level experience!
Semi-submersible
If you can't swim, the semi-submersible is for you! This unique boat is a great way to experience the reef if you don't want to get in the water, allowing you to still see everything up close. This is a great option for those travelling with small children, or just for those who want a relaxed point of view, allowing everyone to see the beauty of the coral reefs.

All information provided at any time by Cairns Tours and our affiliates is subject to these Terms & Conditions. This includes but is not limited to tour information, pricing, blog posts, travel advice, itinerary information and availability.
Your Responsibilities:
Please advise us before booking if any passengers are under 18 years old to ensure this is the appropriate trip.
You must reconfirm all booked tours prior to travel as specified on your voucher. If applicable, notes such as dietary requirements, pick-up locations and additional fees should also be confirmed at this time. Reconfirmations cannot be actioned through Cairns Tours/Mr Travel and must be done so directly through the Service Operator as specified on each ticket.
It is your responsibility to notify us of ticket discrepancies. Please read through the details on your voucher thoroughly to ensure all details such as passenger names, ages and dates of travel on vouchers are correct.
It is the responsibility of all passengers travelling to advise both your travel agent at the time of booking and check-in agent before boarding of any medical conditions including food allergies you may suffer from.
You need to allow adequate time to check-in prior to the specified departure time. Please refer to the specific tour page for full check-in instructions.
Prices/Extra Costs:
All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices and extra costs. Extra costs may include EMC fees, Stingersuit/Wetsuit Hire, Luggage Storage, Insurance, Linen Hire, National Park Fees, Fuel Levies, Dietary Fees, etc. Bonds may also apply.
We will also endeavour to communicate these extra costs with you at the time of booking, and on your ticket. However, it is your responsibility to confirm which (if any) additional costs apply with each Service Operator upon reconfirming your trip.
Travel Risk/Insurance:
It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances.
It should be noted that any transport you have booked (buses, flights and ferries) through Cairns Tours is non-refundable and non-transferable. It might be possible to change flights however do note this must be done directly with the flight operator and we are unable to offer any support with this. This may incur change fees or cancellation fees, it depends on the T+Cs of the flight operators themselves. As we acted as a booking agent for you, it is possible to liaise with the airline directly should there be any unexpected events and the airline is forced to cancel your flights. If there are any changes to your flight times or days, we will get notified and send this email directly to you in a reasonable time.
Merchant Fees:
Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

All ticket/voucher reissues attract a $20 administration fee.
The Service Operator reserves the right to limit courtesy transfers to select local accommodations. Private residences or Airbnb properties may be asked to meet at the closest confirmed location. Failure to meet at the specified pick-up location may be treated as “No Show”, for which the Client Cancellation Policy applies. Not all tours offer transfers, please refer to the individual product to see if this is applicable to your tour.
Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:
Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value.
E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees. You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.
Cancellations
Client Cancellations:
All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No shows or client cancellations made within 24 hours of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price. Client cancellations made within 48 hours of departure forfeit 50% of the total ticket price.
Cairns Tours is required to notify the operator of any cancellations within the specified cancellation period. It is your responsibility to make sure you submit your cancellation request with adequate time, and during standard business hours (9am-5pm), to allow us to contact the tour provider. Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers' discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee.
It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to: [email protected]. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.
Supplier Cancellations:
The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.
All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.
All add-on activities (including but not limited to scuba diving, stand-up paddleboarding, helmet diving, guided snorkel tours, banana boat rides and waterslides) are subject to availability and price changing, and may not be available during your tour without notice. Guests are not eligible for refunds on the grounds of non-operating extra activities.
In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store via telephone or email. While there is a Travel Shop retail outlet located in Cairns, please be aware that they operate as a separate entity and are unable to access reservations made by the Cairns Tours/Mr Travel online department.
All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Cairns Tours/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.
Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.
You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.
Accountability/Misconduct:
All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Check in starts from 7am at the Ocean Spirit Cruises counter inside the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street. The boat is located at the end of Finger A Jetty, boarding commences at 8am for an 8:30am departure.
You’ll arrive back into Cairns Marlin Marina around 5pm.
Return transfers are available for an additional fee. Return Cairns City transfers are $32 per adult and $20 per child. Return Northern Beaches transfers are $39 per adult and $22 per child.
If you’re lucky, you may see a little white or black tip reef shark swimming by, but rest assured they are timid creatures and will swim away from you. Crocodiles prefer to hang around the murky waters of rivers, lakes and swamps. So the water is too clear for them out on the reef. It’s also a long distance for them to swim from the mainland, making it extremely rare to see them on the Great Barrier Reef.
Travelling time from Cairns to Michaelmas Cay is approximately 2 hours. It’s a beautiful relaxing cruise passing other sand cays and reefs along the way.
Yes! As Michaelmas Cay is a shallow, sandy beach area, it’s perfect for children and families to play and swim. Just make sure to bring suitable sun protection.
Absolutely! As long as you are in general good health to dive, the highly qualified dive instructors will teach you all the basics you need to know about scuba diving. Certain medical conditions may preclude some people from Scuba Diving. Please check with your doctor ahead of time if you have any concerns. The minimum age to participate is 12 years.
You will get a full 4 hours at Michaelmas Cay, which gives you plenty of time to explore the area and participate in all of the included activities - with some time for relaxation too!
Yes it does. When you are going out to experience the reef you are most likely going to get wet anyway! Often when it is raining in Cairns, it can be fine offshore. If you are worried about the weather please contact the reservations team. They will be able to let you know the latest conditions. You can change your date of travel 24 hours prior to departure, without incurring any fees.
Yes! A spread of hot and cold buffet lunch is on offer, including vegetarian options. Other special requests are sometimes possible with adequate notice prior to the day of your trip. Please let us know when booking if you have any allergies or special dietary requirements.

- 10.00 am Dive brief for introductory divers.
- 10:30 am Arrive at Michaelmas Cay. Reef Activities commence: - Fish feeding presentation - Snorkelling - Semi-submersible coral viewing tour - Scuba diving for introductory divers. (Dive session times are 11:00am, 12:15pm & 1:30pm)
- 12:00-1:30 pm Buffet lunch served onboard.

Snorkelling at Michaelmas Cay Snorkelling is fun and a great way to experience the many treasures of the Great Barrier Reef! With easy access from the beach at Michaelmas Cay, people of all ages, whether you’re experienced or a novice, can enjoy the reef, quietly drifting over the myriad of corals and colourful fish. The Cay, with its calm, shallow waters, is ideal for first-timers and young families who want to experience it together. Most of the reef's diversity, around 90% of it, is known to be in the top 4 metres of the water.
A mask, a snorkel and fins are all provided and you’re set for your snorkel adventure on Michaelmas Cay. Our qualified crew are on hand to supervise and show you the basics (if you need them). Buoyancy vests are also provided and will help you stay effortlessly afloat as you discover the world below.

Lycra Suits Lycra suits are available for adults and children entering the water, providing sun protection and reducing the possibility of stings and irritations from marine stingers that can frequent tropical waters seasonally. The lycra suits have long sleeves and legs with a hood and mittens. They're a great fun fashion statement and photo opportunity too!

You’ll be in the midst of beautiful coral formations as we observe a treasure trove of marine life going about their daily life. The reefs surrounding Michaelmas Cay are home to several varieties of spectacular giant clams, sea turtles, giant trevally, hump-headed parrotfish, black tip reef sharks and a magnificent variety of colourful and exotic tropical fish.
Our semi-sub tour takes around 30 minutes and is included in your day at no extra cost so make sure you hop on board to join us for an up close encounter of a very special kind!
Marine Biologist Guided Snorkel Tour If you’d like to learn more about the fascinating marine creatures of the reef, you can join an optional guided snorkel tour with the marine biologist. You’ll be part of a small group as you get an up close and personal insight into this amazing underwater world.
Michaelmas reef is renowned for an abundance of giant clams and sea turtles amongst a myriad of colourful marine life. Just some of the commonly seen marine life you may encounter on the guided snorkel tour include all types of hard and soft corals (there are over 400 types of corals on the Great Barrier Reef!), colourful parrotfish and fusiliers, schooling fish, trevally, clownfish (Nemo!), sea cucumbers and giant clams.
This tour is conducted directly from the beach in the cay’s protected waters. Depending on your level of experience, both beginner and more advanced tours are offered. The tour lasts for approximately 45 minutes and is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together. It’s a great educational experience and most of all a lot of fun!
Optional extra Introductory diving at Michaelmas Cay Explore the reef from a fish’s point of view! Scuba diving is a close encounter of the most unique kind. Glide past stunning coral formations, swim along with schools of fish and discover what’s hiding in the reefs around Michaelmas Cay.
No experience is necessary to take a fully supervised, guided introductory dive and you’ll be able to add another dimension to your reef experience delving beyond what a snorkeller can see in this special underwater world.
It’s fun and easy with one of our professional and experienced instructors by your side who will guide you through every aspect of your dive, allowing you to have a relaxed, enjoyable experience.
The only requirements are that you are over 12 years of age, pass the onboard medical questionnaire and participate in our 30 minute dive brief.
Michaelmas Cay is the perfect dive site for first-timers. The island is wind protected and its waters calm and shallow. Once at Michaelmas Cay, you’ll gear-up and start your dive experience with a skills practice session with your instructor in the shallows of the cay and soon you will be ready for your dive adventure!
At the completion of your first Scuba Dive, you’ll also receive a certificate of recognition and exciting memories to last a lifetime!
If you are considering an introductory dive please see our dive crew on boarding the vessel. Pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment as places are limited.
All equipment, including wetsuits and prescription masks (if required) are included. Multi-lingual diving instructors are available upon request, however it is advisable to contact our office for specific language needs to ensure availability.
About Michaelmas Cay A low lying vegetated sand cay encircled by a spectacular fringing reef, Michaelmas Cay is a National Park and a protected sanctuary for migratory seabirds.
Michaelmas Cay is a small, vegetated sand cay
Located on the western tip of Michaelmas Reef 43km north-east of Cairns and 17km north of Green Island. The vegetated coral reef island covers an area of 1.8 hectares and rises to a height of 3.5m above sea level. Around 360m long x 50m wide.
For a period during the late 1800s and early 1900s the island was used by sea cucumber pickers (Beche-de-mer) and for guano mining. In 1937 it was declared a fauna sanctuary and formally a national park in 1975. The Cay has cultural significance to the local Gungandji, Mandingalbay-Yidinji and Yirriganydji indigenous peoples.
How the Sand Cay formed Michaelmas Cay was formed by the accumulation of broken coral, shells and remains of calcareous algae, continually washed over the reef by currents. Seeds deposited by visiting birds over time, and the resulting vegetation, helped to stabilise the cay. The formation of beach rock (sand and other reef remnants cemented into a rock by the action of algae) further stabilised the cay. The seeds carried in by the birds and the waves help vegetation flourish which in turn provides an ideal habitat for the seabirds to roost and nest.
The Cay is rich with a myriad of sea life including green sea turtles (which occasionally nest on the cay), molluscs and invertebrates of all kinds and hundreds of species of tropical reef fish including Humphead Maori Wrasse. The reef surrounding the Cay is especially renowned for its abundance of giant clams.
Cay Flora The Cay’s vegetation is low growing and composed of grasses including sand spinifex Spinifex sericeus, stalky grass Lepturis repens and other cover such as goat’s foot vine and bulls head vine and Sea purslane Sesuvium portulacastrum.
Access to Michaelmas Cay is only allowed between 9.30am and 3pm daily and is limited to the restricted access area marked out by rope.
A Protected Bird Sanctuary Michaelmas Cay is a major natural seabird habitat and one of the most important in the Southern Hemisphere. It is home to at least 23 species of seabirds. Many breeds find this island an ideal nesting habitat and is one of the most significant bird sanctuaries on the Great Barrier Reef. At the height of nesting and breeding season (during Summer months) up to 20,000 birds have been observed. Breeding activity occurs throughout the year, most of the seabird species breed annually, Sooty Terns breed every 8.5 months.
Daily Departures from Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal Vessel departs at 8.30am and returns at 5.00pm.
Coach Transfers Transfers from most Cairns and Northern Beaches hotels/accommodation are available. Pick up times are advised on booking confirmation.

Possibly in terms of improvement the only suggestion I could add is the buffet is good, but it could be even developed further and key items - eg fish ran out without being replenished. Overall the cruise experience was amazing and will be long remembered!
