Catamaran test (by a monohull sailor): Dufour 48

dufour 48 catamaran review

I have a confession to make. I never thought I’d say this, but as a dyed-in-the-wool monohull sailor who has spent many years both privately and professionally railing against the rise of catamarans, I think I’ve been converted – and it’s all thanks to the new Dufour 48.

With global yacht cruising demand shifting in favour of catamarans, helped by technical leaps and vastly improved designs, it was only a matter of time before traditional monohull builders branched out and took the plunge into the murky world of twin hulls. Perhaps, inevitably, after its takeover by Fountaine Pajot last year, Dufour is at the vanguard of this group with the 48 .

On first impressions, the Dufour 48 is certainly striking. Her clean, sweeping lines are as attractive as any you’ll find on a modern cruising monohull, and the dreadnought bow stands out against a backdrop of boxy catamarans from the traditional yards. There have also been hints at a greater performance level than we’re used to seeing in many cats of this size. In short, she looked both beautiful and fast.

dufour 48 catamaran review

Sailing performance

And so it proved. The Umberto Felci-designed hull is slick and very quick – we weren’t always blessed by the wind gods on this test, but did manage to get her doing 6.2kt in 9kt of breeze at 60 degrees, and she was very responsive to helm. This fast hull has the added benefit of fuel efficiency – we easily reached 8.8kt at 2,000 RPM, which is promising for long windless days.

dufour 48 catamaran review

The hull also handles chop surprisingly well for a cat, with none of the seesawing motion usually associated with two hulls.

dufour 48 catamaran review

The version I tested was in a four-cabin layout, with a utility room in the starboard hull, complete with washing machine, worktop and ample storage space. While this was a welcome innovation, it did reduce the size of the forward heads significantly.

The cabins were, on the whole, nice and spacious, with plenty of storage space – which is exactly what a yacht this size needs, whether on charter or privately owned. The forward cabins had island beds – a real boon and something that makes them far more spacious than similarly-sized rivals.

Perhaps the biggest leap forward is the simplification of the electrical systems – everything was centralised to a main control panel. The galley has an island layout, with ample storage and surface space for meal prep, and an appealing openness about it.

The Dufour 48 is predominantly aimed at the charter market, and so concessions have been made to amplify comfort over performance, but she still maintains a real seaworthiness.

The flybridge is aesthetically pleasing and creates a huge open space ideal for socialising and enjoying a sundowner. That said, the helm station could use an extra winch, and would be much improved with better storage for the various halyards and lines that can easily clog it up. The forward day beds are excellent and large. The large ultra anchor our test yacht was equipped with was a real boon, and inspired absolute confidence that it would hold wherever we dropped and whatever the conditions.

dufour 48 catamaran review

I tested one of the first 48s off the production line, hull number 9, and it was clear there were some minor teething issues that need ironing out. In the words of a classic school report, Dufour have made a great start, but could try harder, with room for improvement in the details. The concept is excellent, it just feels a little rushed in the execution. Not bad for a first attempt. Probably an A+ for effort, B+ for achievement.

Dufour’s sailing pedigree shines through in many aspects of their new catamaran. The sleek lines and fast hull position her at the sailing end of the production cat spectrum, while the accommodation is comfortable enough to seriously rival the competition. It appears Dufour has identified a gap in the market between the ever-popular Lagoon 450 and the Bali 5.4 that needed filling, and has filled it well with a concept that stays true to its reputation for superb build quality and seaworthiness while adding a touch of comfort and style.

dufour 48 catamaran review

With its lovely lines and good performance, the Dufour 48 may actually be the ideal catamaran to convert inveterate monohull sailors – well, it certainly worked its charms on me.

Dufour 48 Catamaran Review

Exactly one year ago, during the Parisian boat show Nautic Paris 2017, the French shipyard Dufour announced the launch of the new brand Dufour Catamarans and the first model of the Dufour 48 Catamaran catamaran. The scale model, 3D video and virtual tour, specially created for the event, attracted a large audience, surprised and enthusiastic about Dufour's new project. It is worth noting that this is not entirely new territory for the shipyard, for some time they owned the Nautitech shipyard. And shortly after the launch of the project, the shipyard became part of the Fountaine Pajot empire.

The architects of the project were  Umberto Felci and Lorenzo Giovannozzi,  who have been cooperating with the shipyard since 2002. Known for their technical skills and foresight, they were able to develop a modern, elegant and innovative design in line with the philosophy  Dufour yachts ... Work on the project has continued over the past few years, while the demand for catamarans has increased more and more every season.

To ensure maximum safety and ease of handling, the mast has been moved back along the centerline of the boat to balance the weight and limit the tension on the mainsail. Headsails are larger and offer new possibilities, especially the use of an automatic staysail, with a sail area comparable to that of a genoa.

Total sail area of the catamaran Dufour 48  is 124 m2, the mainsail area - 72 m2 and the staysail area - 48 m2 - a combination that makes it easy to steer the boat in any situation.

Specifications:

Maximum length, m14.70
Body length, m14.20
Maximum width, m8
Draft, m1.30
Sail area, m2124
Mainsail, m272
Gennaker, m2110
Jib, m248
Displacement, kg14955
Engines, h.p.2 x 50/2 x 60
Fresh water, l700
Fuel, l900
ArchitectUmberto felci

Besides,  tilt boom which scores well on monohulls  Dufour , facilitates the lowering of the mainsail and ensures the safety of the crew on the flybridge.  Fixed bowsprit offered as an option will support zero or gennaker code.

During the development of the project, the model of the catamaran passed performance tests and various studies, in particular,  CFD analysis , which was carried out at the earliest stages. This critical analysis showed the excellent hydrodynamic qualities of the catamaran. The entire boat structure has been analyzed and every detail checked in detail  finite element method (FEM) .

Dufour 48 catamaran  represents a balanced ratio of space with the deck plan, cockpit space, roof and bow, divided by 1/3 of the total length. The proportion of the roof differs from the models in this category and provides a very wide living space. Really,  Dufour 48  Is a testament to a balanced design in terms of external and internal space, designed to provide maximum comfort at any time of the year.

In the bow  there are two zones with sunpads, separated by large lockers. The side decks are spacious and protected by hulls along their entire length. There are two steps at cockpit level, one on the port side and one on the starboard side, allowing easy access to the flybridge.  Flybridge   Dufour 48  is a key element of this project. Designed as a second cockpit, it greatly expands the outside space. It is equipped with a low table and is surrounded by large seating and a wide area with sunpads.

Also installed on flybridge  control post like a superyacht that provides an absolute advantage in terms of visibility. Large console, integrates all equipment into a very ergonomic configuration. Three winches for mainsail, staysail and gennaker are within arm's reach. The helmsman's seat is adjustable and the bimini is available in both soft and hard material.

Functional cockpit  works as an extension of the living area of the catamaran. Cockpit space  Dufour 48  can be compared to the cockpit of a 50ft boat or larger. The catamaran's width of 8 meters ensures excellent distribution of space and free movement on board. The cockpit has a large table for 8 people, several areas for swimming and relaxation, as well as the famous integrated barbecue, first introduced by the shipyard  Dufour yachts ... A solution that was subsequently adopted by almost every shipyard producing cruise yachts.

Various portholes provide incredible natural light in the aft cabins. The large glass door opens completely into the interior. Two options are available for dinghy operations, davit and hydraulic platform. Fully integrated into the hull and deck design, both systems guarantee weights of up to 450 kg.

Dufour 48  has been designed to meet the needs of both owners planning to live on board all year round and charter companies. The idea of a large living room was a necessity and the result was achieved to perfection.  Galley connected to the cockpit, fully functional and ergonomic, equipped with numerous storage lockers. Ahead is the navigation post, chartplotter, and autopilot with joystick to control the boat from the inside.

Dining area with sofa in salon  can be modulated in 3 positions - low table, dining table, double bed - full transformer. The 360 ° panoramic window facing the sea provides plenty of natural light. The storage modules are varied and well designed, as the large console with drawers shows, ready to accommodate whatever you need.

Occupying the entire hull on the port side, the owner's suite will seduce at first sight the most persistent. The cabin is equipped with a bed measuring 2 x 1.7 m, very light and well ventilated thanks to the numerous opening windows. It also includes a large study with sea views and comfortable wardrobes and drawers. Ladies will be delighted with a huge dressing room and a large sofa. The bow of the cabin, where the bathroom is located, meets the highest standards: sink on the countertops  Corian , light lockers and a large separate shower.

Dufour 48  introduced an unusual configuration for accessing guest cabins. To guarantee maximum privacy for each living space, the main solution was to make different access to the floats - two stairs on the port side and a third staircase on the starboard side. Thus, all cabins have completely separate access and remain accessible from the saloon. Each cabin includes its own bathroom with separate shower, as well as a variety of cabinets and storage lockers. Ventilation and lighting are also perfectly thought out.

Test drive of the catamaran Saona 47

According to the functional needs of the large yacht, the technical room of the catamaran  Dufour 48  has tremendous added value. This space can be used as an additional galley, pantry, laundry room and many other functional spaces according to your needs and operating plans.

3 and 4 cabins versions  - both are equally functional and comfortable. The skipper's cabin is equipped with a 1.90 x 1.15 m bed with its own bathroom and shower. The main access is through a hatch on the bow deck, but if necessary, the float entry remains accessible.

dufour 48 catamaran review

Introducing the Dufour 48 Catamaran.

About The Dufour 48 Catamaran

Elegance from the heart of italy..

While the Dufour 48 Catamaran is a new name on the multi-hull scene, it has decades of expertise behind it. Formerly owned by Dufour Yachts, the design and technology teams behind it are up there with the world’s best including world-famous Italian naval architect, Umberto Felci. This design was so special that the rights were purchased by established Italian boat-builders JJL Catamarans, who refined the manufacturing process and improved the design, changing this catamaran from a simple production vessel to a unique work of art.

Felci was the original designer of the sleek catamaran in 2018, and continues to oversee production of the catamarans since the company was sold to JJL Catamarans in 2020. JJL Catamarans are partnered with Under the Heavens Sailing Cruises in Croatia, who are backed by International conglomerate – the Fozzy Group.

While the name and management might have changed, the prestigious Felci touch is still front and centre of the Dufour 48 Catamaran, as he uses his vast knowledge and experience to give the catamaran a sleek, Italian styling to rival luxury yachts and catamarans around the world.

The cooperation between exceptional Italian boat-builders JJL Catamarans and the elegance of Umberto Felci’s design creates a catamaran that exudes luxury and performance wherever you look.

Key features:

  • The choice of a rig with self-tacking jib
  • A super yacht helm station on the flybridge
  • Perfect space balance
  • Functional cockpit and living room
  • 360° unobstructed views
  • Standard pulleys, electric winch or hydraulic platform for the dinghy
  • Large range of customizations available

The contemporary design of the Dufour 48 Catamaran ensures a combination of style and performance to make for the perfect cruising vessel. The dual hulls have been rigorously tested for their aqua-dynamics for a smooth and efficient cleave through the water. The main mast has been placed towards the stern to allow for larger headsails, and the boom is more angled than most monohulls. The self-tacking jib combined with the mainsail creates a total sail area of over 120m2.

The Dufour 48 Catamaran has a beautiful outdoor living area, designed specifically for comfort and entertaining. The huge flybridge with stair access from both starboard and port sides provides a separate area to relax and lie in the sun. At the back, there is a wide L-shaped sofa, and in front of the helm, you’ll find a double sunbed. The central helm station is compact with winches nearby so that the catamaran can be operated entirely from the flybridge. Visibility around the boat is excellent, Felci’s impeccable design has succeeded to remove unnecessary obstructions which also ensures more space to walk around the boat.

At the back of the boat, there are wide stairs from the water level on to the cockpit and side decks. The spacious layout gives the impression of a bigger catamaran and the cockpit is an extension of the living room – a lounge area to starboard and seating for eight to port. The Dufour 48 Catamaran has three options for dinghy lifting: standard pulleys, electric winch or a hydraulic platform.

At the bow, there are two double sunbeds just in front of the coachroof. Additionally, there are two small trampoline sections just aft of the cross beam.

Every boat owner wants their pride and joy to be unique, so the boatbuilders behind the Dufour 48 Catamaran understand that the boat needs to be the right fit for the owner. That’s why their flexible shipyard ensures customization for many features both internal and external.

In all definitions, this is a truly beautiful catamaran from the new name on the catamaran scene.

dufour 48 catamaran review

The space below deck is unique in her class. The cat Design Team has implemented an inverted saloon layout featuring the galley towards the bow of the boat, ensuring optimal utilisation of the catamarans interior entertaining area.

The Dufour 48 Catamaran has a 360-degree loft-style saloon connected to the cockpit. On the port side, you have a fully equipped galley with lots of storage space at the back, an island in the middle and an adjustable L-shaped sofa in the front. At the starboard front corner, there is an office space that functions as a navigation or work station. A digital navigation screen and autopilot controls make it possible to operate the catamaran from inside the cabin, and the sliding glass doors ensure that you can completely seal the cabin, as well as enjoy plenty of natural light and fresh air. All aspects of the interior have been designed with both luxury and practicality in mind, making it an incredible escape for guests on board.

In terms of sleeping, this extraordinary catamaran sleeps up to 12 overnight guests. You can choose between three to five cabins and up to five heads in the layout options. The starboard hull has two cabins and heads as well as a day head and service room. It’s also possible to transform it into a single bunk cabin when purchasing. The cabins each have their own entrances that ensure privacy for crew and guests onboard. The port hull can either have an owner’s cabin and a possible crew cabin or two double cabins mirrored to the starboard hull depending on the layout purchased. All the cabins have windows and hatches that allow natural light and airflow at all times.

Captain Andre -

Hey there! So, picture this – the past 25 years have been an absolute blast in Langebaan, South Africa, aka the Jewel of the West Coast. We've been soaking up life, surrounded by these incredible azure waters that practically scream "adventure playground." Sailing, boating, fishing – you name it, we've done it. And our kids? Well, they've practically grown up with a love for the sea and a knack for sailing.

Now, amidst all those laid-back sailing sessions, a wild idea popped up – why not throw some part-time charters for holidaymakers? And guess what? We've decided to shake things up and trade in our regular gigs for the adventure we've always dreamt of.

So, here we are – qualified, pumped, and ready to dive headfirst into the full-time charter scene. Our game plan? Make sure every owner and guest doesn't just have an adventure but leaves with a grin and a bunch of kick-ass memories. Oh, and with my love for snapping pics, I'm on a mission to capture those special moments for everyone to take home. ..read more

And hey, just so you know, we're not exactly newbies at this – we've got a lifetime of boating under our belts, a solid 9 years of sailing like pros, and a cool 3 years of charter experience. Ready for the ride? Because we sure are!

Chef Magda -

Hello there! I'm a positive, energetic, and sophisticated wife, wearing the proud badge of a mom to two awesome kids. My passion? Well, it's all about wowing people with delightful South African cuisine, served up in a joyful atmosphere that's simply infectious.

Nature? Oh, that's my sanctuary – my happy place where I find peace and can't help but marvel at the wonders of creation. Now, picture this: our family has been soaking up the good vibes in Langebaan on the West Coast of the Western Cape. It's been our haven, especially with top-notch watersport facilities that allowed us to nurture our kids' love for sailing. Guess what? They're both sailors now, charter captain and chef actually, and it's high time for us to jump on board by swapping our old careers for new full-time adventures and take advantage of the 9 years of sailing experience and 3 years of charter experience we have.

We're on the brink of an exciting journey in the industry, and our goal is crystal clear – to craft charters that leave our future guests beaming with satisfaction. Get ready for a ride with a dash of sophistication and a whole lot of positive energy!

Multihull of the year

The launch in 2018 of this Dufour catamaran intended for charter was understandably thwarted by the takeover of the yard by Fountaine Pajot... One might have thought that this 48 was going to be consigned to history.

But no - Dufour Yachts and the Croatian charter company Under the Heavens signed a sale agreement this summer for JJL Catamarans. The multihull designed by Umberto Felci will therefore still be produced while keeping the Dufour brand. Under the Heavens, which already operates five Dufour 48s, could soon develop a complete range.

Dufour 48 Catamaran Vs. Lagoon 46

Catamaran comparison, in this article, we compare the all-new lagoon 46 and the dufour shipyard’s first catamaran dufour 48., multihulls have been growing in popularity for the past years, and there is no sign of catamarans stopping their conquest anytime soon.

Major brands known for their monohull production have now a dedicated line for multihulls. In this article, we compare the all-new Lagoon 46 and the Dufour shipyard’s first catamaran Dufour 48.

The popularity of catamarans can be explained by their stability, manoeuvrability and comfortable and spacious living areas. They are  great for chartering .In case you are unfamiliar about the two brands or the catamaran models in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Dufour is known for following new technologies and using innovative materials. A model of the Dufour Catamaran was revealed at Paris Boat Show 2017, the global launch at the Cannes 2019 in water boat show. It is designed by Umberto Felci and Lorenzo Giovannozzi. According to Michel Dufour: “We have developed this project with the vision to match an elegant and comfortable catamaran with outstanding sailing abilities.”

Lagoon is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cruising catamarans. The brand values freedom and lifestyle, resulting in elegant and comfortable yachts. Designed by Nauta Design and Patrick le Quément, The Lagoon 46 represents innovation, freedom and courage – the fundamentals of the Lagoon brand. The global launch for the catamaran was in Düsseldorf boat show in January 2019.

Dufour 48   Exterior

The Dufour catamaran has a contemporary design with voluminous hulls. The reversed and narrow bows cleave the water efficiently. The aft placed mast allows larger headsails, and the boom is more angled than in Dufour’s monohulls. The self-tacking jib (48 m2) combined with the mainsail (76 m2) creates a total sail area of 124 m2.

Dufour is famous for great comfort and outdoor living areas. The catamaran doesn’t fail, as it comes with a huge flybridge with stairs access from both starboard and port sides. At the back, there is a wide L-shaped sofa, and in front of the helm, you’ll find a double sunbed. The central helm station is compact with winches nearby. Visibility around the boat is excellent. Walking area too.

At the back of the boat, there are wide stairs from the water level on to the cockpit and side decks. The spacious layout gives the impression of a bigger catamaran. The cockpit is an extension of the living room – a lounge area to starboard and seating for eight to port. There are two options for dinghy lifting: standard davits or a hydraulic platform.

At the bow, there are two double sunbeds just in front of the coachroof. Additionally, there are two small trampoline sections just aft of the cross beam.

Lagoon46_1

Lagoon 46   Exterior

The Lagoon 46 is designed for uncompromised performance . The hulls are optimised for form and volume with vertical bows. Lagoon’s total sail area (140 m2) is slightly larger than Dufour’s, as is also the self-tacking jib (50 m2). The Lagoon 46 is also a bit more heavy than the Dufour. The mast is placed a bit further aft, and the foretriangle is larger than usual. This allows for more choices of headsails and ensures efficiency. FlatWinder mainsail track is placed on the roof.

The flybridge on the Lagoon has two functions with sunbeds and the helm station – a balance between comfort and steering . Compared to the single helm seat on Dufour 48, the Lagoon has wide sunbeds with adjustable backrests in two rows. While the steering wheel and the seat might be too far apart to drive while sitting down, they are too close for allowing walking past the helmsman. The winches are located on port side, which means one has to leave the steering position.

Lagoon’s one level cockpit at the back gives safe and easy access to the sea. The space is designed to accommodate up to 12 guests. There is a bench at the back and an eating area with an L-shaped sofa on the port side. The bench can be slid to the front to fold open the table. On starboard side, there is an outdoor galley and a lounge bench. There is also a large storage space against the saloon bulkhead. For hoisting the dinghy, here are also two options: single davit system or Tenderlift platform. At the front cockpit, there is a U-shaped lounge sofa and two trampolines.

dufour 48 interior

Dufour 48   Interior

The Dufour 48 has a 360-degree loft-style saloon connected to the cockpit. On the port side, you have fully equipped galley with lots of storage space at the back, an island in the middle and an adjustable L-shaped sofa in the front. At starboard front corner, there is an office space that functions as a navigation station . A plotter screen and autopilot controls make it possible to drive the boat from inside. Thanks to the sliding glass doors and large windows, you can enjoy plenty of natural light and fresh air .

What comes to accommodation, there is room for up to 12 overnight guests . You can choose between three to five cabins and up to five heads. The starboard hull has two cabins and heads as well as day head and a service room. It’s possible to transform it into a single bunk cabin. The cabins have own entrances that ensure privacy for guests. The port hull either has an owner’s cabin and a possible crew cabin or two double cabins mirrored to starboard hull. All the cabins have a lot of daylight coming in through many windows and hatches.

Lagoon 46 interior2

Lagoon 46   Interior

Similar to Dufour’s cat, The Lagoon 46 has also a 360-degree layout in the saloon. There is an U-shaped galley at port and an L-shaped sofa with dining table at starboard front corner, facing the aft cockpit. There is a navigation area on the port side front corner. The sliding glass doors and windows give lots of natural light and ventilation as well as enhance the flow between interior and exterior .

When it comes to the layout of the Lagoon cat, you can choose between three or four cabins . The front and aft cabins are identical and always with separate heads and showers en suite. The combination of functionality and elegant finish gives you an impression of a luxury hotel room . The cabins are very spacious and comfortable, thanks to the specially formed hulls with extra width above the waterline. With the 4-cabin version, it’s possible to have crew cabins in both bows.
