I think it’s hard to decide what my favorite puzzle is. One, because I didn’t get the chance to try every puzzle out there, and two: because every twisty puzzle has its own glamour and characteristics. But I can safely tell that my favorite puzzle would be a non-WCA twisty puzzle.
If I had to choose from my collection, I’d choose the Ghost Cube . I have a 3×3 mass-produced one from Meffert’s, but I will definitely buy a 4×4 and a 3×3 Ghost Cube from its inventor Virust Cube. It’s definitely not the hardest puzzle in my collection, but it’s one of those puzzles that laughs at you when you scramble it for the first time, thinking you’ll never be able to solve it. This Meffert’s Ghost Cube was one of the first puzzles in my collection and my skills on puzzle-solving weren’t that good at the moment. Now, more than a year later, I find it as easy as a normal 3×3 (which it of course is). These are also the reasons that I will surely buy a hand-modded 4×4 Ghost Cube.
Another favorite in my collection is the Tuttminx. Not for its difficulty (it was in fact disappointingly easy), but for its look. 32 sides with each side in a different color is just beautiful. The way it looks when scrambled is amazing and I couldn’t be more happy that I have it on my shelf today.
There are certainly other twisty puzzles out there which I think can easily become one of my favorites; the 5×5 Axis Cube for example. The 3×3 Axis Cube was my first shape shifting puzzles and I was immediately hooked on shape shifting 3×3 mods. It didn’t last long before I bought more. The look when I first scrambled the Axis Cube, not really knowing what I was doing, was terrifying. It didn’t last long until it was solved tough, but I realized that bending my perspective was one of the best things ever when it comes to puzzle-solving.
In short, I can’t really pick one favorite puzzle, but if I could, it would be a perspective bender which looks impossible to solve when you lay your eyes on it for the first time.

I bought this cube at a beach shop 4 months ago and it still is not solved. I’m a cuber but it is just something else even though it works the same as a 3x3. My advice is to buy one for your collection and if you do have the courage to scramble it I wish you the best of luck! 🤞

The ghost cube at first seemed impossible but gets pretty easy with practice. the ghost cube is just a 3x3 shape mod so the process of learning how to solve it is not to hard. though before you buy it there is one more thing two of the pieces of the Ghost cube look pretty much the same so if you have some type of parity that would be the problem.
This is a really good puzzle it turns great and does give a challenge but the stickers have like paint on them and it peels but besides that its really great puzzle
Getting right into it, the quality of this is excellent. The turning is very very smooth and catching is a lot more rare than I expected. I bought the one with black plastic and white stickers. The stickers are very nice and and have a matte finish to them. I think it's a nice contrast from the gloss of the plastic.
This is a challenging puzzle and even after you get used to it, solves still have unexpected new challenges! I recommend this to any puzzle collector.

After giving myself a couple of headaches learning how to solve this I find myself happily scrambling it again. It's a fun cube to solve. The plastic quality is great, having worked in the plastic industries I know poorly molded plastic. The stickers feel nice, though I'll be putting my own stickers on it soon. I'm not a speed cuber so I can't rate it based on how well it cuts corners or handles finger tricks. Overall though it is a good part of my collection.

Why the Ghost Cube is the Hardest to Solve
Throughout the Rubik’s Cube’s lifetime, there have been countless variations of the original 3X3 puzzle. One of the most iconic and hardest Rubik’s Cubes you’ll ever encounter is the Ghost Cube.
It was invented in 2008 by Adam. G. Cowan, a puzzle designer who had only one goal in mind – to create a 3X3 shape modification that only allows one solution and is as challenging as possible.
The famous Golden Cube inspired the Ghost Cube, but unlike the inspiration, which incorporates a Skewb mechanism, the Ghost Cube uses a standard 3X3 mechanism.
Here’s why the Ghost Cube is the hardest to solve and how you can meet the challenge:
- It’s a Shape-Shifting Puzzle
You Must Solve It By Shape And Not Colors
The center piece is less obvious, how to solve the ghost cube, try, fail, repeat, final thoughts.
The Ghost Cube is a shape-shifting puzzle that you can turn in abnormal ways depending on how the layers are aligned. It’s a unique puzzle with properties that amplify the difficulty of the standard Rubik’s cube.
A scrambled Ghost Cube can scare even the most seasoned puzzler. The shape will confuse you even when solved because instead of an evenly shaped cube, it’s a cube with slightly shifted layers.
You must familiarize yourself with the shape before you scramble it because the shapes will shift entirely and make solving it a daunting task.
Unlike the standard Rubik’s Cube that has pieces with different colors you can match, the Ghost Cube comes in one color. There are no colors to match to achieve a solved state. Instead, you have to solve it based on the description and shape of a cube.
There are no colors to guide you, so you have to solve it based on shape alone, making it harder to know where each piece goes.
With several differently shaped pieces, the centerpiece on a Ghost Cube is less obvious. The centers are also not square-shaped, so any rotation affects your ability to solve the puzzle.
A turn only becomes possible when all the cube’s layers are aligned in a particular way, usually straight through the middle of the aligned layers. You’ll find it impossible to make some moves even with the correct alignment until you perform a setup move.
Since you can’t quickly tell where the center is, finding the setup alignment that doesn’t ruin your progress can prove extremely difficult.
You can solve a Ghost Cube using the layer-by-layer method of the standard 3X3 Rubik’s Cube. Because the pieces are not color-coded, a lot of trial and error is expected as you try to figure out what you’re looking at.
Follow these steps to get an idea of where to start and how you can progress:
- The first step involves getting the right mindset. You need to remember that the Ghost Cube has a similar internal functioning to the standard Rubik’s Cube. It may not be evident at first glance, but it’s the regular Rubik’s cube with a twisted outer shell. Internally, they have the same number of pieces, exact mechanism, and function.
- Familiarize yourself with the shape before you scramble it completely. You may find taking pictures or using colored stickers helpful, although some will consider this cheating. To scramble it correctly, you must misalign the top and bottom layers to avoid blocking any turns. Keep in mind that some of the line patterns may lead nowhere.
- After you’ve made a beautiful mess, start by finding a base from which you’ll get a general idea of where the pieces go. Edges that match up with only one center go to the bottom or top layers, while those that match with two centers should be in the middle. With this knowledge, you can build the center first and work your way to the top or bottom layers. Solving the center helps rotate the edges and corners accordingly.
- After you’ve figured out the center, go for the edges. Workaround them like you would with a Rubik’s cube. You can use algorithms at this point with clockwise and anticlockwise rotations. Flipping edges using the FRURUF algorithm should help you orient the pieces. It should be familiar if you’ve solved the standard Rubik’s Cube. Here’s a quick key:
F: front, R: right, U: up, L: left, D: down.
- If an edge doesn’t match up to the center on any four sides, it’s not oriented correctly, and you must flip it. With correct orientations, you can match the edges to the center, piece by piece. If the edges are placed right but still not matching up to the center, try a 180 degrees spin without moving the center.
- The top and bottom layers both have four edges and four corners. Once you’ve worked the edges on the top layer, work the corners on the top layer. Simply twist them around t0 ensure they line up and are in the right spot. Orientation doesn’t matter because the corners are attached to the center of the rotation mechanism.
- Once the edges and corners of the top layer are lined up, move to the bottom layer. You should gradually start noticing the pattern line up as the edges and corners align.
Essentially, it involves a lot of trial and error as you slot in edges and corners that don’t align or look like the correct shape with substitutes until the patterns line up and the layer solidifies.
Once you’ve identified the centerpieces, working out the top and bottom layers will be a little more straightforward. The center should be your base or pivot point on which all other prices rotate as you try out different combinations until the full shape of a layer is formed.
It’s vital to ensure the center is positioned correctly. If you’re having trouble making turns or flipping edges, the center may be misaligned, which may mean require you to start over. Don’t expect to solve the Ghost Cube on the first few tries.
The good news is the more you try, the more you figure out what goes where and in what combination, so keep at it! You know the age-old saying, “Practice makes perfect”? – There’s a great deal of truth in that!

For the average person, the Rubik’s Cube is quite the challenge. In fact, most people will go their whole lives without solving the world’s most popular puzzle.
However, for puzzle enthusiasts, the standard Rubik’s Cube just isn’t enough. That’s where these next 5 puzzles come in. What makes a puzzle difficult? There seems to be a misconception that the bigger/more pieces a puzzle has, the harder the puzzle is to solve. This is not the case!
For example, solving the 17×17 is essentially the same process as solving a standard 5×5 puzzles. Having more pieces definitely makes it more time-consuming, but it does not make the puzzle more difficult.

#5. Constrained Cube Ultimate
Starting off our list is a puzzle that looks like a typical Rubik’s Cube but don’t let the looks fool you. The Constrained Cube Ultimate only allows for partial moves to be made on all faces but 1. Thus, you are constrained by the number of degrees you can rotate a side. The white side doesn’t even let you turn it at all!
This constraining makes it so many of the algorithms used to solve the standard Rubik’s Cube can no longer be applied. It causes the solver to come up with different algorithms in order to complete certain steps and this is why it ranks as #5 on our list.
#4. Pitcher Insanity Cube
This puzzle looks awesome, but man oh man is it challenging. Every move is a shape-shifting and jumbling move so it can be difficult to figure out what you’re looking at once it’s scrambled. Some pieces are even hard to fully scramble due to jumbling. Once you get a good scramble, you’ll have to return it back to a cubic shape and then move pieces around individually to solve each face’s color.

Honorable Mention: Container Cube
We thought this puzzle deserved at least a shoutout. Just because the Container Cube doesn’t have a bunch of pieces doesn’t mean it’s easy to solve! This puzzle is a skewb mod and it looks way easier to solve than it actually is. Adding to the difficulty is having to figure out the color scheme and orientation of the triangular edge pieces since they can appear solved in any orientation.
The standard Mastermorphix puzzle is extremely difficult and definitely earns it’s place at #3 on our list of most difficult twisty puzzles. It’s a shape modification of a standard 3×3 Rubik’s Cube but is much more challenging. The centers need to be orientated correctly and edge pieces can be easily placed in the wrong spot and still look solved. The difficulty increases quite a bit with the higher ordered Mastermorphix puzzles. One of the largest mass-produced version is the 6×6 Mastermorphix (pictured above) which adds parity to list of why this puzzle is so difficult. And of course it also looks unrecognizable once it’s all scrambled up.

#2. Ghost Cube
Coming in at #2 on our list is a puzzle that many cubers agree is extremely challenging. Despite its level of difficulty, the Ghost Cube is just a 3×3 shape modification. What makes it so difficult is the similarity of pieces and the fact that the layers are offset. This means that you have to partially turn the bottom and top layers before you can even begin scrambling the puzzle. Higher ordered Ghost Cubes are even more difficult and only the most serious of puzzlers usually even attempt to solve them.

And finally, we have come to the most difficult Rubik’s Cube on our list. It just so happens to be an actual Rubik’s Cube! However, this version is quite a bit harder than the standard Rubik’s Cube. It has tiles that change color depending on the angle you are viewing it from. So a center piece might be yellow but if you rotate the cube at all it’ll change to a completely different color! This is obviously very disorienting. Since each piece/tile has 2 different colors, there are 2 different solved states of the puzzle. From one angle, it’ll look completely scrambled, but from another angle it’ll be solved.
