A small sailboat can take you big places

Small sailboats are the ticket to going cruising NOW — not when you retire, save up enough money, or find the “perfect” bluewater cruising boat. In fact, it’s the first principle in Lin and Larry Pardey’s cruising philosophy: “Go small, go simple, go now.”

Small yachts can be affordable, simple, and seaworthy . However, you won’t see many of them in today’s cruising grounds. In three years and 13,000 nautical miles of bluewater cruising, I could count the number of under 30-foot sailboats I’ve seen on one hand (all of them were skippered by people in their 20s and 30s).

Today’s anchorages are full of 40, 50, and 60-foot-plus ocean sailboats, but that’s not to say you can’t sail the world in a small sailboat. Just look at Alessandro di Benedetto who in 2010 broke the record for the smallest boat to sail around the world non-stop in his 21-foot Mini 6.5 .

So long as you don’t mind forgoing a few comforts, you can sail around the world on a small budget .

What makes a good blue water sailboat

While you might not think a small sailboat is up to the task of going long distances, some of the best bluewater sailboats are under 40 feet.

However, if you’re thinking about buying a boat for offshore cruising, there are a few things to know about what makes a small boat offshore capable .

Smaller equals slower

Don’t expect to be sailing at high speeds in a pocket cruiser. Smaller displacement monohulls are always going to be slower than larger displacement monohulls (see the video below to learn why smaller boats are slower). Therefore a smaller cruiser is going to take longer on a given passage, making them more vulnerable to changes in weather.

A few feet can make a big difference over a week-long passage. On the last leg of our Pacific Ocean crossing, our 35-foot sailboat narrowly avoid a storm that our buddy boat, a 28-foot sailboat, couldn’t. Our friend was only a knot slower but it meant he had to heave to for a miserable three days.

Small but sturdy

If a pocket cruiser encounters bad weather, they will be less able to outrun or avoid it. For this reason, many of the blue water sailboats in this list are heavily built and designed to take a beating.

Yacht design has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. Today, new boats are designed to be light and fast. The small sailboats in our list are 30-plus year-old designs and were built in a time when weather forecasts were less accurate and harder to come by.

Back in the day, boat were constructed with thicker fiberglass hulls than you see in modern builds. Rigs, keels, rudders, hulls and decks – everything about these small cruising sailboats was designed to stand up to strong winds and big waves. Some of the boats in this post have skeg-hung rudders and most of them are full keel boats.

The pros and cons of pocket cruiser sailboats

Pocket cruiser sailboats present certain advantages and disadvantages.

More affordable

Their smaller size makes them affordable bluewater sailboats. You can often find great deals on pocket cruisers and sometimes you can even get them for free.

You’ll also save money on retrofits and repairs because small cruising sailboats need smaller boat parts (which cost a lot less) . For example, you can get away with smaller sails, ground tackle, winches, and lighter lines than on a bigger boat.

Moorage, haul-outs, and marine services are often billed by foot of boat length . A small sailboat makes traveling the world , far more affordable!

When something major breaks (like an engine) it will be less costly to repair or replace than it would be on a bigger boat.

Less time consuming

Smaller boats tend to have simpler systems which means you’ll spend less time fixing and paying to maintain those systems. For example, most small yachts don’t have showers, watermakers , hot water, and electric anchor windlasses.

On the flip side, you’ll spend more time collecting water (the low-tech way) . On a small sailboat, this means bucket baths, catching fresh water in your sails, and hand-bombing your anchor. Though less convenient, this simplicity can save you years of preparation and saving to go sailing.

Oh, and did I mention that you’ll become a complete water meiser? Conserving water aboard becomes pretty important when you have to blue-jug every drop of it from town back to your boat.

Easier to sail

Lastly, smaller boats can be physically easier to sail , just think of the difference between raising a sail on a 25-foot boat versus a 50-foot boat! You can more easily single-hand or short-hand a small sailboat. For that reason, some of the best solo blue water sailboats are quite petite.

As mentioned above small boats are slow boats and will arrive in port, sometimes days (and even weeks) behind their faster counterparts on long offshore crossings.

Consider this scenario: two boats crossed the Atlantic on a 4,000 nautical mile route. The small boat averaged four miles an hour, while the big boat averaged seven miles an hour. If both started at the same time, the small boat will have completed the crossing two weeks after the larger sailboat!

Less spacious

Living on a boat can be challenging — living on a small sailboat, even more so! Small cruising boats don’t provide much in the way of living space and creature comforts.

Not only will you have to downsize when you move onto a boat  you’ll also have to get pretty creative when it comes to boat storage.

It also makes it more difficult to accommodate crew for long periods which means there are fewer people to share work and night shifts.

If you plan on sailing with your dog , it might put a small boat right out of the question (depending on the size of your four-legged crew member).

Less comfortable

It’s not just the living situation that is less comfortable, the sailing can be pretty uncomfortable too! Pocket cruisers tend to be a far less comfortable ride than larger boats as they are more easily tossed about in big ocean swell.

Designed as a cruiser racer she’s both fun to sail and adventure-ready. Like many Dufour sailboats from this era, she comes equipped with fiberglass molded wine bottle holders. Leave it to the French to think of everything!

Very useful list, but incomplete - as it would necessarily be, considering the number of seaworthy smaller boats that are around.

In particular, you missed/omitted the Westerly "Centaur" and its follow-on model, the "Griffon". 26 feet LOA, bilge-keelers, weighing something over 6000 pounds, usually fitted with a diesel inboard.

OK, these are British designs, and not that common in the US, but still they do exist, they're built like tanks, and it's rumored that at least one Centaur has circumnavigated.

Why can’t I learn on a big boat? 

You can! Plenty of sailors have learned to sail through crewing on bigger keeler boats. But I 100% recommend starting out in sailing dinghies for many reasons:

They’ll teach you more quickly how the boat moves in wind

You’re in control and your own actions and adjustments are immediate and obvious (you’ll learn quicker what went wrong, or right!)

You’ll experience the effects of those in a safe environment, with no major consequences – aside from getting wet!

What are the benefits of learning in a small boat?

Small boats are good for your budget.

Sailing dinghies are an awesome way to give sailing a go without a big investment up front. After all, you want to make sure you enjoy it first right? Smaller boats are much cheaper to buy, maintain and repair, and store.

It’s fun for everyone

Get your family, or a group of mates involved — it’s an awesome way to spend time together mucking about in the water. On a small boat, it’s quick and easy to set up to give it a go and have a great laugh. Small boat sailing’s a pretty fun summer session — and if you’ve got kids doing it with you — that’s the kind of fun experience they’ll remember forever #memories.

You’ll experience tiller steering

A small sailing dinghy has tiller steering — that’s a long lever attached directly to the rudder (as opposed to a steering wheel, which is connected via a mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic system). The benefits of learning to sail with a tiller is that you’ll start to immediately feel if the boat is out of balance, compared to wheel steering which is less intuitive. Your ability to feel the boat responding and keep wind, sail and boat position in balance will be more sensitive learning with a tiller.

You can give racing a go

Sailing small boats may just ignite your competitive spirit with racing regattas! There are many different classes of sail racing offered through most clubs, from dinghy sailing through to keeler races. While many at a high-level do have age class brackets, there are still plenty of options to get involved with at any age. There are plenty of women only sailing events if you’re keen to get involved for the first time . 

Is learning to sail expensive?

Only if you buy a big boat ! Learning to sail doesn’t have to cost a lot. There’s likely a local club nearby that runs affordable adult and family friendly learn to sail classes — either for a one off course fee, or as part of the club membership. Most clubs have an ageing membership and are actively encouraging new people to sail so membership fees are kept as low as possible. They’re especially supportive of the younger generation!

Regarding sailing gear, don’t rush out and buy any expensive sailing gear until you get a feel for sailing, your style of boat, and what the conditions are like for your area. Then you can better choose a wet weather jacket and sailing gear that’s going to suit you. I do recommend you invest in a pair of sailing gloves early on though ( see my top glove picks here )

Where can I try a small boat out first?

Look for a local club with Learn to Sail classes — you’ll be able to get out on the club boats and try those. Most have a fleet of Sunfish (or similar) dinghies to learn to sail and race in. Once you’re comfortable and the sailing bug has bit (it’s catchy and sorry I don’t have the cure) you can look to buy a small boat of your own.

How much does a small boat cost?

Anywhere from $100 to $12,000US depending on the age and type of boat. It’s highly likely you can pick up a used sailboat for a good price, but if you want to spend more (and deck your boat out with the latest high-specs) — you’ll be able to! Remember with costs you will need to factor in the transportation or storage of your boat too. For example, you may need to buy a trailer to transport your small boat, or pay rental to a local marina or yacht club to store this onsite.

Where can I buy a small sailboat?

If you’re looking for a second hand boat, sailing clubs often have small boats available to sell — whether they’re retiring some of their own fleet, or there are members who have upgraded. Keep an eye out on club noticeboards, newsletters or ask around. If you’re in the Learn to Sail classes, you’ll likely meet someone who knows someone who’s got the boat for you!

What’s the best small boat for me?

For beginners, selecting the right boat to buy is crucial, as it can make the process of learning more manageable and enjoyable. That’s why I recommend trying a few boats out through a local sailing club first. It’s good to know about the common types of small boats and how they’re different from each other, so now we’ll explore some of the best small boats on which you can learn the ropes and sail with confidence. Note: Sailing dinghies are specifically designed to be sailed by a certain number of crew, and sail at their optimum speed with maximum boat and crew weight ranges (this is more important in racing class rules). For example, adults usually skip the Opti dinghy (usually sailed by under 15’s) and go straight to a bigger size sailboat like the Sunfish or Laser. Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

Steering by tiller (rather than a wheel) can make a difference when learning. Tillers are directly connected to the rudder that manages the boat’s direction. Tillers provide quick feedback about the strength and direction of the wind as well as the boat’s turning agility at various speeds.

Boats with No Winches

Boats that require no winches to manage the sheets and halyards are best for youngsters and new sailors. These boats usually don’t experience the same forces on the sails and rigging as larger boats, which can be a handful when the wind starts to blow. Winches are usually replaced with cam or jam cleats, which are easy to use.

Sailing Dinghies

Sailing dinghies are usually rigged with one mast and one sail and offer kids and new sailors simplicity so it’s easy to learn the ropes. These boats may have some or no winches, which also makes them easier to maintain. These boats can usually be sailed with one to four people.

Some sloops can scale up, providing a more challenging experience for sailors as they develop skills. Certain models can carry spinnakers and larger headsails to teach sail combinations and new sail trim techniques. Others offer the ability to hike out (shift crew weight well outboard to balance the boat against the wind pressure in the sails). This kind of sailing is more advanced.

Small Catamarans

Small catamarans provide extra stability for those who may be nervous about capsizing or aren’t fond of heeling (tipping while sailing). With two hulls providing a wide and stable base, catamarans area ideal for beginners, which may be why they’re often used by resorts as their beach sailing tourist boats. Rigged with one or two sails, small cats are tiller steered and usually have a trampoline that the students sit on and sail.

Rotomolded Boats

Small rotomolded boats are very forgiving due to their durable construction. Unlike fiberglass or wooden boats, rotomolded (a type of plastic construction technique) trainers can bounce off docks or other boats and cause or sustain little damage. Dinghies and catamarans can both be made via rotomolding.

Trailerable Sailboats

Finally, small sailboats that can be trailered to different locations add variety and that makes learning fun. Students can learn to sail in different wind and water conditions and enjoy their boats differently on vacation or with new friends.

Learning to sail involves all the senses and requires a level head and lots of practice and although it can be learned in many ways, the best way is to start with a boat that’s small, simple, safe and durable.

The best small catamarans for cruising are affordable and comfortable, making great sailboats for a number of different purposes. If you’re looking for the best small catamarans to start your cruising life then look no further!

When searching for a catamaran for our adventures we scoured the internet for any and all information we could find on just about every size, shape, and model!

Although in the end, we opted for a bigger catamaran, in the hopes of having more family and friends on board, we did heavily research the best small catamarans as an option.

Each small catamaran has different pros and cons. As with every sailboat, there will be compromises, but hopefully, this post will help you firm up what you’re really looking for in a multihull and find the right smaller catamaran for you!

Here are what we consider the best small cruising catamarans out there, costing anywhere from $40,000 to $300,000. You can also read up on the average costs of sailboats here.

Why Choose A Small Catamaran For Cruising?

The main advantage to choosing a small catamaran for cruising has to be the cost. Not only are smaller sailboats cheaper to buy initially, but they are also cheaper to maintain and to dock in marinas or dry storage.

Why buy a small catamaran over a monohull? This isn’t the post to go into the pros and cons of multihulls vs monohulls, but a few of the main reasons you might prefer to buy a small cat over a bigger, cheaper monohull is the living space and the comfort underway and at anchor.

Living on a sailboat is very different from taking the boat out for a sporty sail every now and again. Having a catamaran over a monohull means you won’t be heeling or rolling at anchor half as much, you can leave out your coffee cup, and you have the space you need to spread out a little.

A small catamaran will enable the more comfortable lifestyle you’re seeking at a more reasonable price tag. So what’s not to love about small cruising multihulls?

The Downsides To Small Multihulls For Cruisers

Of course, just with everything in sailing, there are always compromises to be made when it comes to small multihulls.

One of the biggest downsides for cruisers is the weight issue smaller catamarans present. You won’t be able to carry half as much as you would on a larger catamaran or monohull, which might be a problem if you live onboard full time.

The other negative is that smaller boats usually aren’t quite as seaworthy as larger ones. You might find you’re limited to coastal cruising if you choose a small catamaran, so make sure you have your cruising intentions in mind before you buy.

Another big thing to look out for when it comes to choosing the right small cat for you, is the bridge deck clearance. This is often worse on smaller catamarans, and can cause nasty slamming in any sort of sea, both when sailing and at anchor.

With these downsides in mind, we’ve split this post into the best small catamarans for ocean sailing and the best for coastal cruising. Obviously this is a little subjective, as many people have sailed around the world in much smaller and less seaworthy vessels!

The Best Small Catamarans For Ocean Cruising

#1 wharram tiki.

  • Suitable for: Bluewater sailing
  • Fixed Keels
  • Draft (max): 2.08′
  • Engines: Single outboard, though some versions have twin inboards
  • Price: Roughly $100,000

We have lusted after the Wharram catamarans since our adventures began and would have opted for one of these if we had found one for sale this side of the pond.

Designed by the legendary James Wharram, these small multihulls are pretty unique. They are based on the Polynesian catamaran design, and the plans enable you to self-build these boats if you have the time, money, and space for a project of this magnitude.

If you aren’t keen on taking on a project then you can commission a boat builder to complete the design for you, or buy one second-hand. The advantages of having one made yourself are that you can tweak things to your personal taste, and you can even contact the Wharrams themselves to see if they can adjust the designs for individual requests.

The Wharram catamarans have a lot of charm dues to their traditional design, and the old-fashioned appeal continues inside the boat too. You won’t find the same huge hull space as some of the modern design catamarans now have, but the outside entertainment space is perfect for entertaining.

These small catamarans don’t have an inside space across the hulls, so all of your inside living space is below. If you’re used to monohulls then this won’t be a problem but if you like the idea of a galley-up then these boats aren’t for you.

Wharram catamarans, especially the Tiki 38, have great reputations as around the world, bluewater boats. They have fantastic bridge deck clearance so slamming is minimum and they sail well.

Most models have a double cabin and two singles, a galley, a head, and a small salon area below. They are smaller catamarans than many newer 38ft multihulls but this does make them more affordable.

A big appeal for us was the fact these boats are designed to be self-made. Although a secondhand model could potentially come with a lot of problems (get a decent survey before you buy!) it does mean that almost everything onboard can be self-fixed. This is a huge bonus if you plan on sailing your small catamaran around the world.

Another thing we loved about these smaller catamarans is the fact they have outboard engines, which we felt would be easier to maintain and replace if necessary. This is a personal choice though so consider this before you get your heart set on one!

One of the downsides to the Tiki 38 is that there aren’t many of them around. These are unique boats and they don’t come on the market frequently. When they do, they tend to be scattered all over the world so you’ll have to be prepared to travel to find one!

#2 Prout Snowgoose 37 : Small Catamaran For Ocean Cruising

Prout catamarans are a popular choice for cruisers, and you’ll find many owners who have circumnavigated in them. The Snowgoose is no exception. Prout no longer exists as a company, as it was bought by Broadblue in the 90s.

Broadblue still makes catamarans today, and they have very similar features to the original Prouts, though obviously they are far fancier and have all the benefits of a more modern design!

The Snowgoose is a great small multihull to go for as you get quite a lot of space inside and out. We weren’t sure about the berth in the salon area, but it might make a great space for a baby or small child while underway!

The compromise in the Prout Snowgoose is the bridge deck clearance and this was something that put us off these smaller cruising catamarans. A low bridge deck clearance makes the boat slam in waves, both at anchor and underway.

#8 PDQ 36 : A Small Catamaran Without Too Much Slamming

  • Suitable for: Bluewater
  • Draft (max): 2.82′
  • Engines: Twin inboard or outboard
  • Price: Over $100,000

These small catamarans have an excellent reputation among cruisers because of their solid build and use of decent materials. They come with either outboard engines for coastal cruising or inboard engines designed to withstand offshore use.

If you like the sound of the PDQ 32 but need a little more room then you’ve got that here! It’s also a boat that people have crossed oceans in, though you might want to consider something more tried and tested like the Prout Snowgoose or the Wharram if you’re planning longer ocean sails.

The boat has three cabins, a galley, salon and head, but there’s a more spacious feel compared to the smaller model. Again, the bridge deck clearance is good so you shouldn’t experience too much slamming.

#9 Lagoon 380 : One Of The Most Popular Small Multihulls

The Lagoon 380 is one of the most popular catamarans out there, and you’ve probably already spotted a lot of them in your search! This is a great option if modern cats appeal to you, as it’s pretty ‘with the times’ as far as smaller catamarans go!

There are lots of different layouts of this boat available all over the world. Some were built for charter with numerous berths and others were commissioned for couples or families with differing cabin and head options.

This is a proven catamaran from a reputable company, but obviously with so many of these boats out there, they come in a range of conditions. Make sure you get a thorough survey done before purchase!

Lagoon 37 TPI

  • Draft (max): 4′
  • Engines: Twin inboard diesels 
  • Price: Over $100,000 USD 

This is the smallest catamaran built by Lagoon, and unfortunately there aren’t many of them out there. These boats were built mainly for the charter market, and have a smaller rig than some similar sized catamarans.

There are two big queen-size forward doubles port and starboard and a smaller double in the starboard hull aft. The galley and salon are designed to be simple and timeless, with none of the fancy trims you’ll find in the newer Lagoons.

As this boat was intended for charter it probably wouldn’t make a great ocean-going vessel. For starters, it isn’t designed to carry too much in the way of provisions. That’s not to say it won’t be a suitable bluewater boat with a few tweaks. Sailors who have circumnavigated in them have increased sail area and added folding props to get more speed from the vessel.

#11 Catalac 9M/30

  • Engines:  two outboard engines or one diesel engine
  • Price:  from $50,000

The Catalac 9M is a little different to a lot of the catamarans on this list, as it was built for sailing in the North Sea! This is a great small catamaran for anyone wanting a boat built to be safe!

The bridge deck clearance is reasonable but the boat is light, which can make it more prone to slamming. The unique feature of this small sailboat is the hard dodger, designed as somewhere safe and dry to stand in bad weather.

It sails well, though like a lot of catamarans there is technique involved in getting it to tack smoothly. Once you’ve got the hang of though, this boat will make good speeds for its size.

The Best Small Catamarans For Coastal Cruising

  • Suitable for: Coastal
  • Draft (max): 3.62′
  • Engines: Twin inboard
  • Price: Up to $300,000 for a newer model

The Mahe 36 is the smallest of the Fountaine Pajot range, and these small catamarans can go for a heafty budget if you find a newer model!

This tiny multihull packs a lot into a small space, and because of its modern features, you’ll feel like you’re in a much bigger boat when you step aboard.

This boat is a fast mover, with an ok bridge clearance and some attractive upgrades compared to their last small catamaran design. Most notably the full-length hard top bimini which has the reviewers raving!

If you have the money to splash out on a newer, more expensive small catamaran then this should definitely be on your list to consider! Although they come with a large price tag, these small catamarans are considerably cheaper new than some of the bigger models.

#4 Gemini 105Mc (34ft)

The Gemini 105Mc is still in production in the US, which speaks to its popularity. Obviously if you buy new you’ll pay a much higher price! This is one of the smallest catamarans on the list, but it’s still a great option for coastal cruising (or some have even successfully completed ocean passages on them in relative comfort).

For a small multihull this boat sails pretty well and is fast for a coastal cruiser. The living space is decent with good headroom. It has two double cabins and a master bedroom, and the interior finishes are nice too.

A big negative to this boat is the bridge deck clearance which really isn’t amazing, but as we said at the start, there’s always a compromise! This is a sporty-looking little catamaran that’s a good contender for the top smallest catamarans out there!

#5 EndeavourCat 36

Designed and built by Endeavour Catamaran, these American built boats are great cruising catamarans. A big advantage to this little multihull is that it will fit into most monohull slips, so if you anticipate using marinas a lot then this might be the small catamaran for you!

This isn’t a slow boat, and owners report speeds of 8-9 knots. Bear in mind though that the narrow beam does make it less suitable for any offshore passages. It has good interior space with 6′ standing headroom throughout, three double cabins, and a decent-sized galley below. The salon area can seat 6 people comfortably.

This cat is great for single-handed sailors, as all the lines lead to the cockpit and the main and jib are completely self-tacking.

These multihulls are quite hard to find, but if you like the Snowgoose but are on a tighter budget then they might be just what you’re looking for. They share lots of features with the Snowgoose and look very similar, only smaller!

There are three cabins, one head, a salon, and a galley, only they are rather squeezed in compared to the larger model. Personally, we thought there was plenty of space for a smaller sailboat but it’s worth seeing them in person if you’re keen on this model.

They do have the same downsides as the Snowgoose though, with limited headroom and low bridge deck clearance. These boats are known for their slamming!

The PDQ 32 is a great budget option catamaran and should be cheap(ish) to buy second hand and maintain. With two outboards that are easy to replace on a smaller budget, you’re looking at some of the usual pinch points on a boat becoming a lot more affordable!

This small catamaran only has two cabins, so sleeps less than a lot of the boats on this list, but it is roomier than you’d imagine inside with a decent galley and salon area. It has decent bridge deck clearance so shouldn’t slam too much in any waves.

This isn’t a boat for longer passages as it is a little small (and perhaps underpowered) to face serious weather. If you’re searching for something to potter around in then this is a fun boat to sail and live in!

These South African catamarans are great little coastal cruising catamarans that are hard to come by anywhere other than South Africa!

They’re pretty tiny, but have enough space for a galley, 3 or 4 cabins, and 1 or 2 heads. Some of the designs even have a bathtub, which speaks of their liveaboard suitability rather than their sail performance!

These boats are some of the smallest multihulls on this list, so don’t expect much in terms of headroom or bridge deck clearance. That being said, if you’re looking for a tiny catamaran to live on and you are prepared to compromise on sailing ability then these are a solid choice.

We have heard that the build quality can vary somewhat with these multihulls, so make sure you do some solid research and get a good surveyor when buying one of these. If you get a good version then they can make really solid boats.

This is a boat built for comfort over all else, so if you’re looking for a budget catamaran to live in then take a look at the endeavourcat 30. Some people don’t like the boxy design, but we quite liked how it looked in the water. I guess it’s personal taste!

This sailboat has two double cabins, a decent sized galley and salon for the size of the boat, and a head. The bridge deck clearance is low so that’s something to bear in mind before you buy, but the headroom is good (another reason why this would make a good liveaboard catamaran).

Such small mention of probably the best catamaran for overall cruising, focusing on ease of helming, speed and livability. Simple rig, great ergonomic features, style and definitely a pedigree on the water. The FP Mahe duo! Sea proven. Most delivered on their own bottoms from France. Wide beams and light. Beautiful interior arrangements and easy to maintain. I’m confused about so little mention of probably the best entry level and beyond real cruiser out there.

I wonder why Broadblue 346 is not on the list.

Appreciate it’s a bit more expensive than most cats listed here but what about the Aventura 37? Technically a small cat but with ocean going abilities and an actual live aboard!

Best family yacht: our pick of the best yachts for sailing with the family

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best family yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

There are many categories in the European Yacht of the Year awards, from the  best luxury yachts  to  performance yachts . But some of the most hotly-anticipated options come when it is time to choose the nominees and winner in the best family yacht category.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market for those looking to set out with the whole family in tow.

A crop of the latest 35-45ft mainstream production yachts, including the ultra spacious Dufour 41 and the smaller sister to the award-winning Hanse 460, plus a couple of less well known yachts, made for a dynamic grouping this year when it comes to picking the best family yachts 2024.

In this, the most competitive size bracket for volume production yachts, there was plenty to like, but two models stood out: the RM and the Bavaria. The former because it’s different and fills an interesting niche that crosses fast cruising with family sailing, from coastal and shoal draught to bluewater sailing ability; the Bavaria because it masters that mix of deck and interior space, performance and handling in a well finished package.

Winner of the best family yacht 2024 – Bavaria C46

The Bavaria and Cossutti Yacht Design relationship continues to flourish and produce standout results in its second generation. The C46’s modern, full shape brings vast deck and accommodation space yet manages to do so on a hull which really performs for its size, and rewards the helmsman with direct feedback.

During my trial we had a good mix of conditions and were able to push the boat, a voluminous hull which becomes reactive once the breeze threatens double figures. We were able to press it during a rain squall, hitting 12 knots in 18 under gennaker, and maintained lengthy double digit spells during some enjoyable sporty sailing. Bear in mind this is a single-rudder boat, yet it still didn’t overpower or lose its grip. It’s impressive, especially given the exceptionally low ballast ratio (20%), which shows the reliance on form stability.

“The chine is a bit higher than the C42 and we tried to make the wetted surface as small as possible,” Maurizio Cossutti told me during our trial. The keel is also comparatively lighter, slimmer and deeper for a sporty feel. It’s clear the German yard has really poured its engineering energy and might into this build – from design to engineering to finish quality, the perceived richness of the C46 stands out (although dressed with over €200,000 of options, this is still no mean feat in a mass production size and brand). So much so that other big yards may struggle to compete.

You could argue the Dufour 41 does that to some extent, but here the emphasis is slightly more skewed towards volume, while it doesn’t quite match the Bavaria for the overall engineering and finish quality. Felci somehow managed to swell the forward sections enough to allow the Dufour to be the first 40-footer to offer four cabins, including two doubles forward. We then learned in September that Dufour had signed a new contract to supply Sunsail charter yachts, which helps explain the draw of all this extra accommodation space.

The price for this is extra weight. Although equipped with a tall rig, the 41 only becomes reactive once the breeze is up to the mid teens, where it can lean onto a chine and employ its generous form stability. But for those after volume, max deck lounging space and a bright spacious interior for multiple guests, it’s a hard model to compete with at this size (full report in YW September 2023 and online).

On paper the Hanse 410 should perhaps have challenged the Bavaria more. It’s the latest in Hanse’s new collaboration with Berret-Racoupeau, follows on from the larger sister 460 which won this category in 2022, and shares that appealing modern hull shape. It showed respectable performance and figures, and proved easy to manage short-handed, thanks to the self-tacking jib and winches positioned to hand.

A halyard issue with the mainsail and a tangled sock for the kite curtailed my sail trials somewhat. We also found the cockpit quite busy, particularly the winch layout, although it is nice and deep for protecting its crew. It makes you query why you need two tables on a 40-footer – until you see them lowered to create sun beds, that is!

Stand out features from the interior were the number of stowage solutions, particularly on the two-cabin test boat. Offered as two or three cabins with one or two heads, the former provides a huge amount of stowage accessible from the cockpit or interior. There’s more in the galley and a multifunction space in the saloon, which can be a full length sofa berth, a proper chart table, or a standing desk with storage below.

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

The Beneteau Oceanis 37.1 is also all about easy sailing and handling, and proved to be a fun, manageable sized cruiser, particularly the First Line option we tried, which increases sail area with a square-top main and flat deck furler. While certainly an accessible yacht, it perhaps comes across as a little basic. This is the last Oceanis in the new generation eight-boat range between 30ft and 60ft, so the focus is more on evolution than the revolution of its early predecessors. Hence the two- or three-cabin interior seemed a little unremarkable when viewed against the opposition.

The same could not be said for the RM 1380, particularly when you step down the companionway – which doesn’t really feel like going below decks on a conventional monohull as it’s so naturally bright in the raised saloon and helps you appreciate your surroundings. So much so it’s more like being on a multihull. The doorways are a little tight, but the double cabins are of good size thanks in part to the generous beam. The standard two-cabin layout has a practical utility space in place of the optional third cabin.

I’ve long appreciated the plywood epoxy technique RM uses for its hulls, together with the powerful form stability Lombard’s design brings. This comes with the choice of keels, including the shoal draught options of a lifting centreboard or efficient twin keels. We tried the latter and the result on the water is in keeping with the sporty looks: it’s an enjoyable mid-displacement cruiser to sail from the aft quarters. Then there’s the superb winch layout, which sees the primaries positioned inboard for use standing under the protection of the coachoof and sprayhood. For offshore sailing the open transom can be closed off with a platform. It’s not perfect, but the RM is intriguing and versatile.

Elan Impression 43

Another memorable interior is to be found on the Elan Impression 43. The rustic knotted oak finish is unique, the only option Elan offers and something the Slovenian yard wanted style gurus Pininfarina to maintain to identify it from the sportier ranges. Personally, I like the strong focus on timber as it helps showcase Elan’s heritage, but appreciate it won’t suit all tastes.

These mid size Impressions are the mainstay of Elan’s sailing range, the family and charter staples for the Med. This Humphreys-designed update has a modernised shape, but retains the older style and the hull rocker to keep a soft, smooth sailing experience. It’s rigged with a genoa or self tacker and two to four winches. Although somewhat unremarkable in terms of sailing performance, it fits its purpose, while the increased aft beam allows for larger aft cabins and a service tunnel between them.

In an age where we need to focus on making things last, my preconceptions of the Maxus 35 revolved around questioning the need for a lower budget Polish build. Why not just buy a proven second-hand yacht? That said, the Northman shipyard has done a respectable job on this, the largest Maxus yet, in terms of the build and finish for the price. It feels solid throughout, the interior is light and inviting and it is worth consideration as an entry level yacht with reasonable accommodation.

I can also see some appeal of the centreboard design for lake sailing. However there was little to take home with regards to the design or sailing experience, so my conclusions mirror my first thoughts.Best family yacht 2023

Best family yacht winner – linjett 39.

This is quite possibly the best boat you haven’t heard of. The 39 offers easy, fast family cruising and occasional racing in luxurious comfort and proves that classic needn’t be old fashioned.

Linjett exudes Scandi heritage: a third generation 50-year-old brand, it’s run by three brothers and has built 900 yachts from its Rosättra yard in Sweden, which dates from to the 19th Century. Its business model is based on long production runs – think evergreen rather than trendy. Linjett not only designs, engineers and builds its own boats, but services and maintains them too, with 220 in winter storage. It also now produces the high performance Shogun Yachts in carbon epoxy, which hints at the skill levels of its infusion techniques.

A telling result at sea is how quiet the yacht is. Sturdy and stable, it instils instant confidence and proved a delight to sail. We had some very pleasant upwind beats, pointing high, and some lively reaching, hitting double figures a few times while pushing it under 150m2 gennaker in waves. The Linjett is set up to easily short-hand it too, with two winches and a bank of clutches each side positioned aft in reach of the helm.

The interior is offered with two or three cabins and the latter we saw had an excellent layout, including separate shower/wet hanging compartment aft. Joiner work is first class, with traditional mahogany used as standard, or the more contemporary European Oak on the test boat.

This is a premium yacht, but you get what you pay for. It will surprise most and ensure everyone steps ashore smiling. See our full review next month.

The Dufour 37 may be shorter than the old 360, but Dufour was reluctant to brand this 37 as smaller because its modern, broadened hull shape has resulted in an enlarged deck space, cockpit and owner’s cabin. Felci has designed a clever hull that sails well with good performance for its (34ft) size. The aft quarters behind the helms feel compact to maximise cockpit size, but proved comfortable enough to sail from. The primaries are in reach of the helm and we liked the lightweight, low friction jib sheet adjusters.

The 37 is offered in Easy (two winch), Ocean (cruising), or Performance versions and with a two- or three- cabin layout. The test boat was the most popular Ocean model, although it had €100,000 worth of optional extras including sails, engine and bow thruster, resulting in an expensive yacht for its length.

For those who recognise the Bente name, we previously featured it in detail in 2015 when it burst onto the scene with an innovative and affordable new 24-footer (around 150 of which have been built in Poland). We then tested its 39 in 2019, a year before the yard then filed for bankruptcy. But it’s now back under new ownership with this really impressive and more refined Bente 28, again by Judel/Vrolijk.

It’s a fun yacht to sail, easy to short-hand, with sprightly performance, especially when reaching. The coachroof is part of the deck structure and proves crucial in providing light, space and headroom below in an ergonomic interior that has been very well thought out.

All in all it’s a great compact, entry-level cruiser, with a practical, well protected cockpit.

Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships

The right ship comes down to the type of vacation experience you want.

I took two cruises in July, and they couldn’t have been more different.

After spending 10 days on Seabourn Pursuit, the cruise line’s 264-guest expedition vessel, I returned home for a few days before boarding Royal Caribbean International’s Utopia of the Seas , which can accommodate over 20 times that.

Cruise ships range in size from yacht-like vessels to mega-ships that are more like floating resorts. And as much as cruises may be about the ports they visit, the ship you pick can shape the destination you can access and ultimately, the kind of trip you have. Here’s how they differ and how to know which is right for you.

What are small-ship cruises like?

If mega-ships can feel like cities at sea, small ships are perhaps more like quaint towns. It’s easier to find your way around, faces become familiar quickly and the server at the nearby eatery knows how you like your eggs.

“The service is just 100% going to be much more intense than any other type of sailing,” said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. The majority of cruise lines sailing ships with capacities in the 200 to 700 range are luxury brands that already put a premium on service – though that can vary by operator – but there are practical reasons too.

Many of those ships have higher crew-to-guest ratios, making it easier to give customers a personalized experience. “We want people to feel that it’s (a) yacht-like atmosphere,” Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn, told USA TODAY on board.

Small-ship cruises generally bundle more in their fares than those on larger vessels, from food to drinks like wine and spirits, select excursions and more. Some inclusions can be particularly extravagant.

On Seabourn, for example, guests can order caviar for delivery any time of day at no additional cost (I had to try it out for research purposes during an expedition through Western Australia’s Kimberley region ).

That doesn’t necessarily mean the price tags will be higher, though. While the upfront fare may cost more, by the time guests add up drink packages , specialty dining, Wi-Fi and other extras that are typically charged separately on large mainstream ships, their expenses may not be so different.

“Don't worry about what you're paying when you go on,” Kuther said. “It's what you pay when you come off.”

If the prospect of thousands of cabins and fellow guests seems overwhelming, a small ship can also offer a more manageable experience. Lines and crowds are a relative rarity and there’s less chance of getting lost trying to find your room (a situation I’ve encountered more than once on large ships).

Getting on and off is easier, Kuther added, with the vessels often docking closer to the city center or in ports that can’t accommodate larger vessels. They also stay overnight more frequently, relieving the pressure of packing sightseeing into a shorter window.

“That is amazing because if you've ever gotten off of a mega-ship tendering into Santorini, it's like the most insane thing,” she said. “Like, you're fighting for your life to get into the funicular. So, it’s definitely an elevated experience.”

While many are well-appointed, they do have a more limited number of amenities and dining options. On an Aurora Expeditions Antarctica cruise in December, the Sylvia Earle ship had only two restaurants. I enjoyed the food and some offerings rotated, but by the end of the 11-day trip I was ready to change it up.

Travelers with children may find the ships lacking in kid-friendly activities, too.

What are big-ship cruises like?

By contrast, guests on big ships are spoiled for choice. “You can't beat the variety if that's what you're looking for,” said Kuther.

Larger ships offer a wide range of eateries, bars and entertainment. Carnival Cruise Line’s Jubilee ship, for example, has more than 20 dining options, from Guy’s Burger Joint to tacos and burritos at BlueIguana Cantina and Coastal Slice pizza – not to mention the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster , a water park, and Loft 19, a quieter retreat at the top of the vessel.

Those kinds of ships can be particularly well-suited to families or large groups who want options. Royal Caribbean divided its Oasis Class – and later Icon Class – into neighborhoods with that in mind.

“Everyone has got something to do and are excited to do during the day … And then in the evening, everybody can come together in one of I don’t know how many restaurants and have a great family meal or a date night or just a burger, and then they have a fantastic show,” president and CEO Michael Bayley said in a media briefing on board Utopia.

Large ships have more to offer passengers “who really want to party” as well, Kuther noted.

The scale also allows cruise lines to create more immersive experiences. On Utopia, the second-largest cruise ship in the world , I had dinner outside one night at the Chops Grille steakhouse in the vessel’s Central Park neighborhood. With a breeze blowing through the open-air walkway and the sound of crickets in the background – which the cruise line pipes in – I could’ve been convinced I wasn’t on a ship. 

Guests are less likely to feel the movement of the waves at that size, which also can be helpful for passengers who are fearful of water or prone to seasickness , Kuther said.

A number of cruise lines have ship-within-a-ship concepts , too, that allow guests to escape the crowds in exclusive accommodations, restaurants and sun decks, while still having access to the wider range of onboard offerings (though some offer a greater degree of separation than others).

It’s worth noting, however, that “small” and “big” are relative terms, and many mainstream cruise lines operate ships in the 1,500-to-2,500-passenger range. Those can offer a kind of middle ground, with a more intimate experience often at a lower price point (though Kuther noted that’s partly because those ships tend to be older).

Still, the overall experience of a bigger ship may cause sensory overload for some travelers.

Which is right for me?

  • If you’re looking for adventure on an expedition or want to be pampered on a quiet, lower-key vessel, small ships are the way to go.
  • If you want lots of things to do, places to eat and ways to party, consider a bigger ship . But there’s sure to be one that suits you.

As Kuther put it, “(If) people say they don't like cruising, I will always 100% say, ‘You just weren't on the right cruise.’”

So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.

The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?

In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. While forward-facing sonar is the subject of much discord among bass anglers, it only impacts a small percentage of bass chasers with enough money and time to invest in it. The dirty little secret of the bass pros is that while FFS helps them find individual bass, rarely would that final step be possible without side-imaging fish finders.

That’s because side-imaging sonar allows them to quickly break down lakes, taking a moving picture of wide areas. Imagine heading to a new lake where you know that fish are somewhere on a massive flat or miles-long section of river ledges. You could get on your trolling motor and cover short stretches very thoroughly but slowly. Or you could get behind the wheel of your boat, kick out the side imaging to 70 or 100 feet in either direction and find every little rock, log, and irregularity.

Side-imaging’s ability to shrink the playing field is its greatest strength. I’ve had it for a decade or so now across multiple brands, and when I have trouble breaking down a fishery, it’s my electronic decoder ring. I still love FFS, which has helped me catch more fish, but the story here is that side-imaging is a more useful tool.

Below, I’ll list some of the best side imaging fish finders on the market and get insights from three pros on why particular brands are best for them.

Humminbird was the first to bring side-imaging to the tournament world, and they continually push the envelope of the technology, most notably with their MEGA imaging, which is crisp and clear. However, Humminbird’s selection of compatible premium chart options for anglers everywhere makes this unit stand out. In particular, the LakeMaster mapping is exceptional, or you could add a Navionics chip. It makes the process super accurate, and if you want to make your own maps, you can create them with AutoChart Live, which integrates LakeMaster features, map depth contours, bottom hardness, and vegetation as you drive your boat. I had prior generations of this unit on two boats, and was very happy behind the wheel, looking for subtleties.

Pro Analysis

New York pro and electronics wizard Kyle Patrick is completing his first year on the Bassmaster Elite Series and qualified for the 2024 Bassmaster Classic by winning a 2023 Open on Lake of the Ozarks. He said that even the lowest levels of side-imaging Humminbird units are exceptionally high quality, something he couldn’t have imagined a few years ago.

“People get bogged down in settings,” he says. “And of course, the palette you choose and the settings you use will be situational, but you literally can go out, turn this one on, and the MEGA Imaging will help you out a lot.”

He added that a lot of fishing on large impoundments and major river systems is done on large flats, so he’ll side image the whole area and mark it. Then he uses Humminbird’s 360 feature before going to FFS.

After fishing with a number of different pros who showed me their value, I put two 126SVs on my current boat. While I considered two units up front (one exclusively for LiveScope), my budget really only allowed for two total. These two cover most of my needs, although there are times when I’m side-scanning that I’d like something even bigger for my old eyes. Ultimately, though, the 13.4-inch screen does what I need it to do.

I can divide it into three or four sections, using two for side-imaging and one for mapping, and not feel like I’m shorting myself out of any detail or visibility. The screen is so incredibly crisp and detailed that I frequently find small objects at 60, 80, or even 100 feet out. They jump out through the screen, and it doesn’t take a lot of monkeying with settings to get there. If you do need to mess with the settings, I found the menus simple and self-explanatory. The company’s customer service has been great and I’ve had zero bugs whatsoever.

Retired Elite Series pro Chad Morgenthaler competed in seven Bassmaster Classics and one FLW championship, and also won two B.A.S.S. events. Today, he guides extensively on Missouri’s Table Rock Lake, where he is happy to go dirt shallow, but is at his best when he’s giving electronics lessons in his or a client’s boat. 

“What I really like about Garmin is that their constant research and innovation in transducers makes the clarity second to none,” he says. “Also, once you learn the various menus and settings, it allows you to access information that other units cannot. You can fine-tune every aspect to your desire and to the conditions, whether that means frequency changes, brightness, sensitivity, contrast, or scroll speeds. It’s very user-friendly and it’s fast.”

He teaches his clients that side-imaging shows features and details that FFS will not. “Lure placement is important, and FFS is good if you know what’s there, but you can’t shortcut the system by ignoring side-imaging as a foundation,” he says.

Anglers just looking to get into the side-imaging game, or who will use the unit exclusively for side-imaging, shouldn’t be bullied into thinking they need a television-sized screen to be effective. This 9-inch dynamo has 800 x 480 resolution, and I’ve found it to be easy to get started on and completely non-buggy. For a non-tech guy like myself, that’s a huge plus, but if you want to do even more with it, this sub-$1,000 fish finder offers a lot more. That includes not just premium SideScan technology, but also DownScan imaging and preloaded maps. I wouldn’t want to divide it into three or four pictures, but if you’re just using it for two views (e.g., side-imaging on each side or side-imaging on one and mapping on the other) this may be the best bargain around.

Lowrance Eliite FS 7 side imaging

Louisiana’s Clark Reehm is a veteran pro who has qualified for two Bassmaster Classics and four FLW championships. He also guides on Sam Rayburn, where he leads “catching” trips as well as dedicated electronics classes. He uses HDS 12 and HDS 16 models, but has been impressed that even the smaller sizes retail the high fidelity of the big ones.

Reehm likes the fact that the Lowrance is effectively “plug and play.” “Many tour level guys run them on straight default out of the box settings,” he says. His usual setup is to run at 100 to 120 feet in either direction, which gives him 200 feet of range, providing enough detail to find brush piles and other high-percentage targets.

“Forward-facing sonar is awesome, but what it doesn’t do is tell you where to stop and start,” Reehm says. “Structure Scan tells me that. In practice and even during a tournament, it is my best tool to deduce really quickly whether there’s bait in the area, a population of fish, or specific targets I need to fish.”

Having compared the Lowrance units to the other brands in some of his competitors’ and clients’ boats, he believes that its processing power shows fish better than the others.

How to Choose a Side-Imaging Fish Finder

The prices of these side-imaging units continues to increase, along with the number of accessories available. By the time you add a mount or mounts, specialized transducers, and map chips, your initial investment has often increased exponentially. Furthermore, most anglers don’t just have one graph on their boat. I’m in the minority of serious bass heads with only two. Even many weekend anglers now have three, four, or even five, and the costs add up quickly. You may also have to add a dedicated battery to power them all day.

Screen Size

Early in my fishing career, I never could have envisioned having a 12-inch screen, but now that I’ve had them at the console on multiple boats, I crave more, especially when side-scanning. I’d like to have that 12-inch screen split scanning to the left and right, and another (probably 7 to 10 inches) used for mapping and/or down-imaging. With the units networked, I could drop a pin on a key spot or see what it looked like in two dimensions without toggling between screens. As with most things in life, if you have the power and the space, get as much screen as you can.

Compatibility

Do you already have a certain brand of graph or a certain type of trolling motor? Keeping things “all in the family” often provides benefits in terms of easy networking and allowing your tools to talk to one another. Some pros like multiple brands because they believe it allows them to see the same image in different ways, but for most of us that’s overkill. In my opinion, a single type of wiring and single brand of gear creates the fewest problems with the most advantages.

Brand 

Ultimately, if you’re starting from scratch this is a matter of personal preference. If mapping is paramount, Humminbird seems to be best. I’ve liked the non-bugginess of my Garmins and the fact that their menus are easy to decipher. Meanwhile, Lowrance has a long and storied history in the industry. If your local dealer or rigger prefers one over the other, that may be enough to give you a nudge in that direction.

Final Thoughts on the Best Side Imaging Fish Finders

If you have the patience to use it properly, sitting behind the wheel of your boat and scanning areas thoroughly, side-imaging is the most efficient tool you can possibly use to break down new waters. It takes in wide swaths of the lake’s bottom and shows you what’s there — everything from logs to drop-offs to bottom composition changes to the baitfish and gamefish themselves. I’ve found more sunken items, and hidden gems, by employing it when I have the time. That’s the biggest crux of the matter. It’s not just taking the hours to dial in your unit, and then to learn to interpret it, but also putting down the rod and reel for meaningful periods of time. To be honest, I don’t use it much on local tidal rivers, but when I’m forced to fish lakes offshore, or learn a new body of water, it’s my golden ticket.

Pulling an anchor up from the seafloor is a job for the birds — or a first mate you don’t like very much. It’s backbreaking work that you probably start to dread the second you deploy the anchor and start fishing. 

Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem: You can purchase and install an anchor winch or windlass. 

Below, we’ll explain everything you need to know about boat anchor winches, outline the different types that are available, and share some of the things you’ll want to consider when picking a specific model. 

Understanding Anchor Winch Types

There are several distinctive types of winches on the market, and each one offers its own strengths and weaknesses. 

Anchor winches are classified in different ways by various boaters and manufacturers, but most people recognize five different types.

Electric Winches

Electric winches connect to your boat’s battery (or a supplemental battery, in many cases) and deploy or retrieve the anchor with the push of a button.

There’s a ton of variation within this category. For example, you can pick up electric winches with varying sizes, rode capacities, and motor powers. They also come with varying additional features, such as switches . 

Hydraulic Winches

In fact, one of the primary benefits of hydraulic winches is their ability to generate high amounts of torque — levels that just aren’t necessary for non-commercial vessels. 

Vertical Windlass

Windlasses differ from winches in several ways. 

Like winches, windlasses feed or collect rope, chain, or a combination of the two, and allow you to deploy or retrieve your anchor. But while winches store your anchor rode on a rotating drum, a windlass anchor retrieval system doesn’t store anything. Instead, the unused portion of rope or chain is stored in a dedicated compartment called an anchor locker, located below deck. 

Vertical windlasses feature a vertically oriented drum-like component called a capstan, which is why they’re sometimes called capstan winches. The capstan turns to collect or feed out chain or rope. They typically require large anchor lockers to provide enough “fall” (vertical distance) from the motor.

A vertical windlass requires a large installation hole, but most of the unit will sit below deck. This helps protect the mechanism from water and keep your deck tidy.

Horizontal Windlass

The primary difference between a vertical windlass and a horizontal windlass anchor retrieval system is the orientation and name of the spinning component. The former has a vertically oriented capstan, while the latter features a horizontally oriented component known as a gypsy. 

Additionally, horizontal windlasses take up a bit more space, as they typically sit entirely above the deck. However, on the plus side, they usually work with smaller anchor lockers, as they require less fall. 

Some horizontal windlasses, such as the Lewmar Pro Fish Free-Fall , are also designed to allow for manual operation if you experience a power issue. As a bonus, this model even allows for controlled free-fall, allowing you to get on the fish more quickly.

Boat Anchor Winch Key Considerations

Now that you understand the basic categories and styles of winches and windlass anchor retrieval systems, you can start familiarizing yourself with the key characteristics to consider. 

While not comprehensive, the following list details most of the things you’ll want to think about before picking a specific model. 

  • Boat size and displacement : Larger boats require larger winches or windlasses, so you’ll need to select a model that falls within the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines. 
  • Anchor weight and type : You’ll need to factor your anchor weight into your winch- or windlass-selection algebra (along with the rode weight), but your choice of anchor will generally be based on your boat size and bottom characteristics rather than your windlass or winch model. 
  • Power source : Electric windlasses and winches often require between 35 and 200 amps of battery power. This can tax your existing motor battery, so it’s often necessary to add an additional battery solely dedicated to the winch or windlass. 
  • Deck layout and space : Both winches and windlasses take up space, which you’ll have to account for. Windlasses generally take up less deck space (though they do require a storage locker below deck), as winches must be large enough to store the anchor rode. 
  • Rode type and length : You’ll need to match your preferred windlass to the type of rode it works best with. For example, a vertical windlass will grip rope better than a horizontal windlass, which is important for those using a combination chain-rope rode. Windlasses are generally designed to work with a specific type of rode, such as three-strand rope, and they typically use chains based on ISO- rather than NACM-specs. However, some models — such as the Maxwell Marine RC12-10 — are flexible and work with any type of marine chain. Winches typically work with a variety of types of rope or chain. 
  • Durability and corrosion resistance : Winches at the low end of the price spectrum often feature plastic components, while high-end models are made from things like stainless steel or bronze and are sure to last much longer. Nevertheless, some budget-friendly models, like the Trac Outdoor Products Angler 30 , are suitable for “occasional” saltwater use. Just be sure to rinse winches featuring plastic components after every use with fresh water. 
  • Compatibility : It’s important that everything in your ground-tackle chain — including your winch, anchor, and rode — matches your needs and works well with each other. To ensure compatibility, choose an anchor and rode first, then select a winch or windlass that’ll work with each.

Installation and Maintenance

No matter what type of winch anchor or windlass you select, you’ll have to install it correctly and maintain it (or pay someone else to do so). The specifics will vary a bit depending on the type and model you select, but you’ll generally want to think about the following requirements:

  • Mounting : Generally speaking, winches are easier to mount and install than windlasses — especially if your boat isn’t already set up to accommodate a windlass. Winches can be installed in many different places, but you won’t have as many options when installing a windlass. Nevertheless, windlasses usually look better once installed. 
  • Electrical or hydraulic connections : Electrical connections are often easy enough for boat owners to do themselves, but hydraulic connections are more complicated and will likely necessitate professional assistance. 
  • Rode management : Winches make rode management simple, as they store the rode in a neat and tidy manner, right on the drum. On the other hand, windlasses store the rode in a locker. This helps to protect the rode from the elements, but tangles and snags are more common. It’s also worth noting that winch drums don’t impose the kind of wear-and-tear that the capstans and gypsies of windlasses do.  
  • Regular inspection and maintenance : The most important thing to do for your winch or windlass is to rinse it with fresh water after every trip. You also should regularly inspect winches and windlasses for signs of salt corrosion or rust and check all components that rotate or experience friction for signs of wear. Many manufacturers also recommend lubricating the moving components with marine-grade grease once a year (or more frequently). Hydraulic winches require additional maintenance, including regular oil level checks and filter replacement. 
  • Winterization : Hydraulic and electric winches should be winterized in the manner that the manufacturer recommends. It’s also wise to rinse the unit and your anchor rode with fresh, clean water before storing your boat for the winter.

Budgeting and Cost Factors

Winches and windlasses vary significantly in terms of cost. We’ll outline some of the primary factors that influence anchor winch pricing below, so that you can get the most bang for your buck. 

Boat Anchor Winch Type and Brand 

Electric winches are usually available for low three-digit prices, while hydraulic winches can be extremely pricey. Windlasses, thanks to their complexity, are a bit pricey, though some models — like the Maxwell Marine RC6 — hover around the $1,000 price point. 

Additionally, it’s important to consider the brand you select. Winches and windlasses offered by premium brands, like Lofrans , Imtra Corporation , Lewmar , and Maxwell Marine , cost a bit more but provide better performance and value. 

Winch Capacity and Size 

You’ll need to ensure that your new winch is capable of storing a sufficient amount of rode and that the motor will be strong enough to retrieve the anchor. You don’t want to overburden the motor, which may shorten its working lifespan. 

This means thinking about your boat’s size, the anchor and rode weight, and the depth at which you normally anchor. 

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, but you usually want a motor rated for at least three times the combined weight of the rode and ground tackle. For example, if your anchor, rope, and chain combine to weigh 300 pounds, you’ll need a motor rated for at least 900 pounds. 

Winch and windlass manufacturers tend to provide model recommendations based on boat length too. In other words, they’ll recommend one or more models for boats in the 20- to 40-foot-long range, while recommending different models for larger or smaller boats. 

Rode storage capacity is relatively straightforward for winches — simply check the manufacturer’s guidelines. This is a bit more complicated for windlasses, as the rode is stored in a locker, but most locker manufacturers will identify the capacity limits of their lockers.   

Material and Construction Quality 

Winches and windlasses made from higher-quality materials will cost more money than those made from more affordable materials. But because you’ll be using them in a corrosive, saltwater environment, this will be money well spent. Poor-quality materials will break down far more quickly than high-end alternatives, which means you’ll just have to replace them sooner. 

You can avoid this problem by simply sticking to high-quality winches and windlasses, which are made of superior metal and coated to protect them from the elements. You’ll pay more up front, but doing so will pay dividends. 

Additional Components 

You may need to purchase a few additional components to get your winch or windlass up and running — especially if you’re adding a new winch or windlass, rather than replacing an existing one. 

You may need a few relatively low-cost items, such as a chain stopper , as well as an anchor roller to ensure the rode feeds into the device properly. Speaking of the rode, you may also need to swap out the rope or chain to match the specifications of the winch or windlass. You’ll probably also want a footswitch to operate the winch or windlass in hands-free fashion, but this isn’t strictly necessary.

Installation and Professional Services 

For the most part, installation doesn’t contribute a lot to the cost of installing a boat winch. Anglers with any modicum of mechanical experience will typically find that an electric boat anchor winch is easy enough to install without professional assistance. 

Installing a windlass is a bit more complicated, given the greater complexity of the device. You’ll also have to access the anchor locker and ensure it provides enough fall for the rode, but that’s not especially technically challenging. 

Hydraulic winches are another matter, though. They will often require professional installation, which will represent additional costs. 

Maintenance and Repair Costs 

As with any piece of equipment, you’ll need to factor in the costs of repairs and on-going maintenance when budgeting for a winch or windlass. 

Maintenance usually isn’t very expensive for electric winches. Typically, you’ll only need to purchase things like lubricating grease. Hydraulic winches, on the other hand, will cost a little more to maintain, as you’ll often need to purchase new filters from time to time. 

As for repair costs, you’ll generally find that spending a little more money upfront by purchasing from reliable manufacturers saves money in the long run. Budget-priced, no-name models break far more often than high-end units. 

Don’t Get Stuck With the Wrong Boat Anchor Winch

You don’t want to go through all of the time and expense of buying and installing a new anchor winch for boat use only to find that the motor isn’t strong enough to lift your anchor that’s sitting 100 feet below your boat. Worse, you don’t want to try saving a few bucks by buying a budget-priced winch that breaks and requires complete replacement before it’s even seen one full season. 

So, be sure to heed the manufacturer’s advice regarding motor power and size, and above all else, stick to high-quality winch and windlass manufacturers — like some of the ones discussed above. You’ll pay a little more up front, but you’ll be glad you did.  

What’s the difference between a winch and a windlass?

The primary difference between a winch and a windlass is the location in which the rode is stored. Winches feature a large drum around which the rode wraps; windlasses feed the rode into a separate storage locker. 

What size winch should I get for my boat?

It’s always important to carefully select your winch based on the size of your boat and the weight of your rode and anchor. However, a 2:1 ratio based on your boat weight is a good rule of thumb. In other words, if your boat weighs 2,000 pounds, you’ll want a winch rated for 1,000 pounds.

Do I need a bigger battery for a winch?

In many cases, yes. Winches draw considerable amperage, which can exceed the rating of many existing batteries. So, it’s often necessary to upgrade your existing battery or install a secondary battery, dedicated solely to the winch.

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.
