History
As is recounted in the brief paragraph at the head of page 2 of the , Star Yachts was founded in the years immediately following WWI by Franz Marie Denye, a Belgian refugee who had fled Belgium at the beginning of the war. Originally a builder of full size ships, he decided that models would provide a livelihood for him and his family. This they did until the works site was compulsorily purchased to clear the site for new development in 1990. At that point the family closed the business. The factory had been demolished by 1991. There was a brief attempt to keep the name alive as the banner of a Youth Opportunity Programme project to provide work for the unemployed, but it soon folded. It is not known whether the products of the YOP project were the same as those of the original company.
Production over the years was extremely varied andvery large, as is shownby the regularity with which relatively recent examples appear on Ebay and in boot sales. Apart from the last catalogue and some instructional material of comparable vintage, very little documentation has survived and we don't know a lot about the pre-war production apart from very occasional models that turn up of which we had no prior knowledge. Over the years the range has included both clockwork and steam powered boats but these are extremely rare. It is thought that Star produced hulls for steam powered models sold by Mersey Models of Liverpool and probably that the steam plants used by Star were made by MerseyModels.
Changes over time
Much of the variation in production will now be impossible to disentangle, but we have some small insights. Early (pre-1939?) hulls have a rounded counter stern, but more recent (post 1945?) models have a square stern. [early round stern] The Star trademark logo was originally a brass pressing nailed to the deck, but this was changed at an unknown date to the more familiar transfer. The last production run of yachts have blue sails. Names have been changed at various times, For instance SY7 yachts exist named both as Arctic Star and as Ocean Star. Whether this is a considered policy, or the result of a shortage of the appropriate name transfers is impossible to determine.
The catalogue is a trade catalogue. Most of the boats were sold through toy shops and department stores, particularly in seaside towns, but some of the larger boats were sold at one stage by Bassett-Lowke, who bought in a number of ranges of superior quality toy boats throughout their existence. There will be pages on Bassett's activity in the toy end of the market in due course.
You will see that the last pages of the catalogue contain many non-boat items suitable for sale in sea side toy shops. Many of these are in plastic. It is not known whether these were moulded by Star or bought in. The absence of any plastic components on the boats and the continued availability of items such as the tower style bucket suggests that they were bought in.
Catalogue and Instruction sheets
You can download the last colour catalogue, a price list and some sailing instructions.
Sailing performance
As the catalogue admits, the very small models are suited only for the bath. The smaller yachts struggle to perform, but the 'named' yachts generally sail well Western Star however, at 30 inches the largest yacht in the last catalogue, is a pig to sail properly. The performance is improved by moving the mast forward by an inch.
Potential collectors should be aware of Chinese copies of Star designs sold under the logo of Bosun Boats. These are not Star yachts in any sense and do not sail anything like as well as the originals.

Luxury yachts have always been associated with glamour and power, making them a perfect setting for the silver screen, and expedition yacht PLANET NINE in Tenet is the latest to awe moviegoers.
Superyacht Planer Nine from movie Tenet available for charter
Launched in 2018, she was built by Admiral Yachts and measures an impressive 73m/240ft. More impressive however is her on board amenities, giving guests the option of a cinema, observation lounge and library, a steam room and sauna, gym, beach club and Jacuzzi, while the Helipad ensures that guests are free to come and go as they please.
The military-style exterior styling comes from internationally renowned designer Tim Heywood , and combines sharp angles and square windows to create a robust appearance. Within, the neutral contemporary palette for the interiors are by Fitz Interiorand changes from light and laid-back to warm and cosy for quiet evenings chatting over drinks or curled up with a good book.
The accommodation is designed for up to 12 charter guests over 9 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 5 double cabins and 1 convertible cabin.
There is an extensive collection of water toys on board, and amongst the highlights are kite surfers, Scuba diving equipment, and an inflatable jungle gym. As an explorer yacht, she has an extensive cruising range and has a steady top speed of 16 knots, making good time while allowing guests to soak up the sunshine and the beauty of the region.
Accommodation
E/Y PLANET NINE was filmed in the Amalfi Coast , one of the most popular regions for Western Mediterranean luxury yacht charters. The island of Capri is the perfect blend of natural and man-made wonders, with sights including the glowing Blue Grotto, the Gardens of Augustus and the hairpin turns of Via Krupp. Along the mainland coast, the hilltop village of Ravello is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has inspired poets, writers and artists for centuries. Villa Cimbrone is a must-see attraction, where visitors can stroll through the scenic gardens of this 11th Century villa and watch the sunset from the cliff-top terrace.

Star Yachts of Birkenhead 1935 Catalogue
The Star Yacht factory in Birkenhead, England manufactured model sailing boats for a period of nearly 70 years, their yachts were successfully exported all over the world and yet, in spite of this, nowadays there seems to be very little information available identifying the broad spectrum of their products and how they had evolved over the years. From what I can gather the catalogues that were produced, depicting the full range of yachts in line drawings, were primarily intended for the trade with products listed in carton quantities and reference given to trade-terms, etc. so it is, perhaps, for this reason that so few have survived and that details of the companies products are so sketchy.
I have been fortunate to be able to scan a number of early catalogues that chart not only the development of Star’s core product, model yachts, but also the vast range of other associated toys that were produced in order that the business avoided the peaks and troughs of such seasonal sales.
I will be adding further catalogues and information over time.

STAR YACHT DAY 2024
Sun day, June 30th. at Hoylake, Wirral.
Well the weather was playing up again this year with a very strong northerly breeze, at least it wasn't raining all day like last year but it did not stop the hoards of Star yacht owners from turning up and having a very good time indeed with people arrived from all points of the country.
It was nice to see some larger and older types of the Star yachts this year, a lot looking freshly restored, a real mixed bag sailing together.
Triona and Ian returned with their 8" Challenge which was again a hit with everyone and more than two dozen taking part.
On the day we were collecting for the Macmillan Cancer Support and Alan would personally like to thank everyone who over the past few months has donated the yachts, monies and purchased any of the yachts. £240 was raised, it's all going to a good cause.
Below are some of the photos of the day along with photos from Star owners in different areas and around the globe in other countries who sailed their Stars in homage the anniversary of the factory closure in 1990. If you took any photos on the day sailing your Star yacht, wherever you may be, then please send them in.

A fine collection of Stars, endeavours and SYs.
Triona and Ian from Scotland brought with them the 8" Challenge yachts which did extremely well considering the strong wind that we had for the afternoon.

Star Yacht Day is about the yachts and wherever you may be on June 30th. or thereabouts, get your Star out and give it a sail. Here are some more photos from around the UK and world-wide.
Well done to Terry Voisey who certainly made the effort.
Here is Andy Broad going that one step beyond by swimming alongside his yacht in Falmouth harbour.

An excellent day all around, well done for supporting the day.
Don't forget to send in photos of your Stars and I will add them to the page.
From next year the Star Yacht day will be held on the last Sunday in June, as it is the weekend, it allows more people time to drop in, so that will be on Sunday June 29th. Hope to see you if you are passing by, drop in and say hello, you don't need to have a yacht as we can lend you one.

Everyone’s favorite recycled good isn’t as eco-friendly as they think it is: study.
The glass isn’t always greener.
Thought you were being green by buying glass containers? Think again. This so-called eco-friendly vessel component is far less sustainable than people believe, according to scientists at the University of Amherst in Massachusetts.
“Despite glass being idealized as being the most sustainable, other packaging types may be more sustainable,” authors wrote in the study published last month in the journal Sustainability.
Unfortunately, many view glass as synonymous with sustainability as well as cost-efficiency.
The researchers surveyed 850 adult customers on their ideal orange juice packaging, finding that most preferred a $1.10, 12-ounce glass bottle that’s locally produced and labeled 100% recyclable, Food & Wine Magazine reported.
This was followed by carton, aluminum and plastic containers, per a recent press release.
“Glass was the most sought-after and most highly esteemed packaging type,” said Nomzamo Dlamini, the paper’s lead author. “But it turns out, glass is actually among the least sustainable if you look at the whole packaging lifecycle.”
The team arrived at this conclusion by comparing the packaging process for glass, carton, aluminum and plastic.
They found that while the sustainability of food packaging differs depending on the contents, vessel size and weight, and other factors, carton reigns supreme when it comes to single-serving orange juice.
Clocking in second for sustainability was plastic, followed by canned, and finally, glass, shattering perceptions that the latter is king.
Also contrary to plastic’s planet-killing reputation , the petroleum product’s “production and end-of-life impacts” are less than glass’s, and it’s lighter and therefore demands less energy to transport, per the study.
Not to mention that the steam-based sealing process employed with plastic containers requires less energy than the retort system used for glass.
Ultimately, the paper concludes that while “packaging choices contribute to environmental outcomes, the most impactful and practical way consumers can contribute to sustainability efforts is to reduce or avoid food waste.”

Italian Sea Group flagship yacht Planet Nine ready to be delivered
Planet Nine – previously known as Admiral Project 575 – has been completed and is ready for delivery. At 73.2 metres, she is the largest superyacht from the Italian Sea Group to date. She was launched in Marina di Carrara in January 2018. Planet Nine is for sale asking €85,000,000.
This ice-classed explorer yacht balances a comfortable interior with all the practical considerations needed for global voyages.
Giuseppe Taranto, CEO and worldwide sales director at the Tuscany-based yard, said during the launch, "We are proud of this construction and are confident she will be a benchmark in her category. She is a yacht with a unique style that will attract attention in every port. Planet Nine is also a great achievement in terms of technology."
This full-displacement custom motor yacht features accommodation for 12 split across six spacious guest staterooms, including a 300 square metre owner’s suite , which covers an entire deck and comprises two cabins and a central lounge.
Meanwhile the upper deck is dedicated to the guests with four further cabins and a panoramic observatory lounge afore of the on board cinema room and its 112 inch screen.
Other key features include a large helicopter hangar, suitable for an Augusta Grande-sized chopper, and a pair of superyacht elevators connecting all five decks and providing discreet crew access. The aft tender garage houses a pair of 9.75 metre Rupert Marine tenders, while the beach club includes a dedicated spa area.
Built to Lloyd's standards, Planet Nine is scheduled to be delivered to her owner before the end of the year, when she will take her place as one of the largest explorer yachts in the world .
The yard adds that the interiors "recall the classic taste and the elegant atmosphere typical of timeless yachts, but with a touch of sober modernity". Engine installation details and her top speed still remain confidential, but an impressive cruising range seems certain to be among her key features.
