Bahamas Catamaran Charters – The Advantages

Here are the reasons why you should choose a crewed catamaran for your sailing vacation in the Bahamas:

Catamarans have a shallow draft

This allows access to more shallow harbors, bays, and coves that a motor yacht or a monohull would not be able to access. A crewed catamaran charter will get you closer to the beaches, reefs, capes, and other areas where waters are more shallow. Because of the shallow draft, catamarans have more anchoring options.

Catamarans have large, wide deck areas

Catamarans have an optimal layout with lounging and living areas on top, providing guests with spectacular panoramic views. There is also less space between decks, which means you won’t have to climb tall flights of stairs. The living and lounging spaces, both indoors and outdoors, are much larger. This makes entertaining a breeze.

Catamaran rentals offer more privacy

Finding your own little oasis for a moment of solitude on a catamaran is easy since there is ample deck space. Privacy is one of the reasons many choose a catamaran charter since the layout has sleeping quarters located in the hulls, keeping them separate from the common areas.

Catamaran charters are known for safety and stability

Catamarans are very stable both when at anchor and while underway. They don’t roll because of a dual hull structure, keeping the deck fairly level, and they have natural buoyancy. They also tend to handle rough waters more efficiently, and watertight compartments allow a catamaran to stay afloat even if a hull is pierced. Catamarans are a great choice for families or those who are new to the charter world because of reduced seasickness and overall safer travel experience.

Catamarans offer a wide selection of water toys and activities

Most catamaran rentals come with water toys, sports, and other activities that guests of all ages can enjoy. Scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are just some of the fun a catamaran can offer. Some have hot tubs on the deck. Trampolines are also a bonus on a catamaran.  When not in the water or exploring one of the Exumas islands and cays, take advantage of the charter’s entertainment options, like movie libraries, video game systems, or board games.

Catamaran charters are cheaper than motor yacht charters

Catamarans have lower operating costs, making them a more affordable option than a motor yacht charter. When you begin the booking process, let your charter broker know your budget, and they will match you to the perfect crewed catamaran. Bahamas catamaran charters are also a more affordable option than taking your group to a luxury resort. Since you’re not competing with hundreds of other guests for the attention of the staff, your charter crew can provide you with a five-star, VIP experience.

Catamarans are family-friendly

There are many factors that make catamarans the best choice for family sailing vacations. When booking, select a crew that has experience working with children. Your kids will remember a captain that shows them how the boat works, and crews that set up theme nights or treasure hunts. The safety and stability of a catamaran’s construction are also ideal for families – some of the boats offer additional features like baby gates, safety nets around the decks, and pocket doors on the stairwells. The layout of the decks and the location of the cabins allow you to be close to the children at all times. Finally, catamarans provide a selection of water sports, inflatable toys, life jackets, and other gear specifically for children.

"Amura and her crew were above and beyond anything we could have hoped for in our sailing. Truly 5 star from our arrival to our departure. The day could not have been any better executed for parents and for kids… and THAT is a hard feat! First of all- no surprises, the boat is actually as amazing as it looks!! So many listings seem great but on arrival are not the case. Not here!!! The boat is in pristine condition with various areas to gather The Crew- what can we say… the kindness, patience, humor, knowledge… all of it!! They kept our champagne glasses and surf and turf plates full!! The food was top notch, from fruit, to charcuterie to our meal and dessert. Delicious!! Rebecca even helped to accommodate some dietary needs... so grateful The Day- captain Max lead us on an adventure to see the best and most beautiful parts of the Bahamas. All in all, you cannot go wrong with Amura… from the boat to the crew this is a 5 start experience from start to finish. "

A group of people poses on Tahina's forward trampoline area. Tahina is anchored in clear blue waters and only one other boat is visible in the distance.

Captain Jason Decker

Jason is an avid sailor, sportsman and all-around mechanical whiz. He is the engineer behind all of Tahina’s modern technical upgrades and always has a new project in store to keep her in tip-top performance condition.

Jason started out racing Hobie cats, J24s and an assortment of PHRF-classed sailboats, eventually owning his own J24s and completing in several National, North-American and World Championship events. He eventually became interested in cruising boats and charter vacations, hosting friends and family on bareboat monohulls and catamarans in the British Virgin Islands, Mediterranean, Bahamas and Southeast Asia over two decades.

When Lara invited him to come sailing on a year-long trip sailing from Trinidad to New Zealand in 2010, he was instantly sold, and that trip brought them both to the conclusion that owning and crewing their own charter yacht was a 10-year goal they were determined to meet. Now with a 200-ton RYA Yachtmaster Oceans license and tens of thousands of sailing miles under his belt, Jason spends his days guiding guests on Tahina through the waters of The Bahamas, sharing his passion for sailing and diving with everyone who comes aboard.

Chef/Mate Lara Ortiz

Lara is the creative visionary behind the on-board experience, from Tahina’s furnishings to the itinerary and menu design, the boat graphics and merch, Lara’s attention to detail and sense of style colors it all.

Born and raised near the ocean in South Florida, and having spent countless hours on board sailing, lobstering and fishing between North America, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific, Lara thrives on sharing her love for the cruising lifestyle with her guests.

Lara has a passion for the natural environment and the flora and fauna within it, so she takes pleasure in helping our guests identify what they’ve seen underwater or on land, and to learn more about its role in the Bahamian ecosystem.

Lara’s menus and cooking are characterized by fresh flavors and colorful dishes that highlight the best ingredients available, and consider the tastes of our guests. Each day typically includes a treat for someone on board inspired by your preference sheet, or a local flavor for the group to try. She regularly gets requests to share her recipes after our guests leave, and she’s happy to do it.

Lara holds a USCG OUPV license and has sailed Tahina tens of thousands of miles, in addition to her time racing one-design on J24s and thistles, chartering bareboats and sailing with friends over 15 years in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and South Pacific.

Catamaran rental in the bahamas.

Welcome to the beautiful Bahamas , a tropical paradise known for its turquoise waters and breathtaking scenery. If you're looking for a unique way to explore this stunning archipelago, why not consider renting a catamaran?

Sailing in The Bahamas is a truly magical experience, and catamarans are the perfect boats for exploring the many islands and cays. With their shallow draft, catamarans can access remote anchorages and quiet bays that are off-limits to larger boats. Plus, the stable platform of a catamaran makes it easy to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery as you cruise through the clear waters.

With a catamaran charter , you have the freedom to explore the islands at your own pace. You can anchor in a new location every night or spend several days in one place, depending on your preferences. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a first-time boater, a catamaran rental in The Bahamas will surely be an unforgettable experience. Are you ready to discover all that The Bahamas has to offer by catamaran?

How much does it cost to charter a catamaran in the Bahamas?

Catamarans are available to suit a range of budgets, from affordable options to high-end luxury boats. However, the cost of renting a catamaran in The Bahamas can vary widely, depending on several factors.

The average price of renting a catamaran in The Bahamas starts typically around $600 per day . On the other hand, the price for luxury catamarans, with high-end amenities, starts on an average at $1,800 per day .

It's important to keep in mind that many catamarans are available only for a weekly charter, which can further impact the cost. Prices can differ depending on the make and year of the catamaran, the length of the rental, the number of guests, and more.

Rent a catamaran with or without a skipper

When it comes to renting a catamaran in The Bahamas , you have the option of renting with or without a captain. Both options have their advantages, depending on your sailing experience and preferences.

- Renting a crewed catamaran with a captain is a great option if you're new to sailing or if you want to sit back and relax while someone else does the navigating. A captain can offer valuable insights into the best places to sail, the local culture, and the history of the islands. Renting with a captain is also a great option if you want to learn how to sail and improve your skills, as many captains are happy to teach you the basics.

- On the other hand, a bare boat charter can be an excellent choice if you're an experienced sailor or if you want to have complete freedom and control over your itinerary. You can explore the islands at your own pace, anchor in secluded coves, and create a customized itinerary that suits your interests and preferences.

Charter in the Bahamas to follow the path of ancient pirates , visiting the low-lying Abaco and Exuma island chains with their sparkling sands and shallow, azure water. Abaco has 120 miles of cays and islands , showcasing some of the finest beaches, sheltered anchorages, coves and British colonial architecture. The 55 Bali was great as we were the first paying customers. Beautiful boat with plenty of room. The Captain and first mate were great. Food was top notch and so good that we opted to not do 1 shore dinner and just ate on the boat. We saw and did everything that we set out to see. I would repeat in a heartbeat.

Frequenty Asked Questions

When is the best time to go on a bahamas yacht charter.

The optimal time to charter a motor yacht in the Bahamas aligns with the region’s peak season, spanning from  late November to early May . During these months, the Bahamas experience  mild temperatures ,  minimal rainfall , and favorable sea conditions, creating an ideal setting for a seamless and enjoyable yachting experience. This timeframe ensures that charter clients can fully appreciate the stunning beauty of the Bahamas, explore its diverse islands, and indulge in the pleasures of cruising in optimal weather conditions.

Make sure to book your Bahamas yacht charter well in advance. Ideally, you would inquire about your coming charter 12 months in advance .  WHY?  The best motor yachts are often  fully booked  long in advance and it’s not unusual to see popular dates booked  2 summers ahead  for a Bahamas yacht charter . Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter.

Where should I start my Bahamas yacht charter?

Most of our charters  start and end in  Nassau , The Capital city of The Bahamas. This is where the airport is located, and it is here you will find the best provisioning to get ready for your Bahamas yacht charter.

After leaving Nassau most of our clients choose a route heading south along the Exumas, stopping at locations such as  Highborne Cay, Norman’s Cay, Warderick Wells Cay,  and  Staniel Cay ,  and then doing an anticlockwise loop up to  Eleuthera before ending in Nassau again at the end of their Bahamas yacht charter.

How much does a luxury yacht charter cost in the bahamas?

For luxury yacht charters in the Bahamas, prices range from about $30,000 to $350,000 weekly, plus expenses. The cost depends on factors like the  type of yacht , its  size , and whether you’re going for an  all-inclusive package or not.

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely that the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary — and for good reason. Found on both Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages , Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas — one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

catamaran trips bahamas

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida — the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers have lots of choices. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

catamaran trips bahamas

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in summer. Plus, wave season — when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year — runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain. You also won't have to contend with potential itinerary changes due to hurricane season , which runs from June through October.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found in summer, with lower temperatures during winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

catamaran trips bahamas

Islands in the Bahamas are featured on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix of ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore, and even Gulf Coast departures from Galveston, Texas. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston, South Carolina.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

catamaran trips bahamas

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, the country's proximity to the East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "Big Nine" brands — Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages.

One unique outlier is Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line), which operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort there, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas if they wish to do so before returning to Florida on the ship several days later.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

catamaran trips bahamas

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, take a quick taxi ride to Paradise Island, which is home to the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use the outdoor pools and waterslides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style johnnycakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

catamaran trips bahamas

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands that can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers on their first visit, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright-blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

Related: The 10 biggest mistakes cruise ship passengers make on port days

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Bimini Beach Club on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

catamaran trips bahamas

Most of the cruise industry's private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually a barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also offer water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also available, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

catamaran trips bahamas

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings , consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during wave season, when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for extras like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in restaurants that charge fees for meals. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates if you live in Florida, military discounts or " kids sail free " promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. Dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

catamaran trips bahamas

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a trip to this popular cruise region.
