Elizabethan 23

  • August 5, 2009

The smallest Elizabethan, she was designed by Webster and David Thomas in 1969. She is a particularly pretty yacht, looking like a scaled-down offshore cruiser-racer of her day, with long overhangs but a lifting keel. She is very stable but can also be quite quick in a decent breeze. A MklI came out in the mid-1970s, with headroom raised by 150mm (6in) to 1.5m (5ft) and various other improvements to the four-berth interior. Inboard diesel and petrol outboard-powered models were built and some were home-completed.

LOA 7m (23ft) LWL 6.6m (18ft 6in) Beam 2.2m (7ft 1 in) Draught 0.8m to 1.5m (2ft 6in to 4ft 11in) Displacement 1,727kg (3,808lb) YM test report May 1969

Hi all, A few months ago I sold my westerly windrush and purchased a 1969 liz 23. Its a lovely sailing boat. Its my first swing keeler. The Elizabeethan has its iron ballast wrapped around the bottom of the hull, the swing keel is more of a centre board really. Its a steel plate, weighing about 40kg apparently. Problem is that every time the boat rolls you can hear the keel clunking from one side to the other. This only usually happens when on a run, or a broad reach in rough/moderate waves. Are there any other liz 23 owners out there who have had the same issue? Is this normal? I am considering having her pulled out, and putting some king of padding around the top of the keel to protect the casing, just doesn't seem normal to have steel knocking against GRP at the bottom of your boat! Has anyone else tried doing the same thing? Cheers Hamish

Quite common, even when boats are new as there needs to be some clearance to stop the plate from sticking. Probably gets worse as the pivot bolt and/or the hole wears. You may also find there are (or were) washers to act as bearings to reduce the movement that have now worn away after 40+ years. Probably time to drop the plate and have a look.

Not the same boat but the same system. When running and broad reaching you don't actually need the centreplate. I hoist ours into the keel and get no knocking. When beating, the water pressure keeps the plate from banging unless it's very light airs and a sloppy sea. PS if you are on a drying mooring, leave the plate down a couple of inches so that each time the boat rises and falls the plate will move and clear the slot of mud. Otherwise you can end up with the plate stuck up in the slot.

You might get some inspiration from the article in the currrent edition of PBO on the replacement of a similar centerplate in a Stub keel, the boat was a Dufor 1800 IIRC.

Thanks for the replies guys, most informative. I was told that the plate had been replaced a year or two ago, so not too bothered about the state of the plate itself, more concerned about potential damage to the hull/casing from the knocking. Sounds like this is normal for the liz 23. I will have a look under there next time the boat comes out, and wioll consider some sort of rubber washer arrangement to dampen the impacts from the plate. I will have a look at the PBO article. Any futher advice from liz owners on this issue would be most welcome..

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

ELIZABETHAN 23

DESCRIPTION

Elizabethan 23, 'Mistress Quickly', is a masthead sloop sailing yacht with a long straight ballast keel and centreboard.

The Elizabethan 23 was the most compact in the range of cruisers built by Elizabethan Yachts of Southampton. Like her larger sisters, she combined seaworthiness and performance with a stylish design. In powder blue with white topsides this Elizabethan 23 'Mistress quickly' is an extremely pretty boat.

The hull design offers a stiff hull with a long straight ballast keel and centreboard to allow access to shallower waters. With centre board down the draft is nearly 5' but with te board up she only draw 2'5".

Her masthead rig provides a sail area of 276 sq.ft which provides lively but entirely manageable performance.

Below are four berths, galley with spirit burning hobs, sink and discreet sea toilet.

'Mistress Quickly' boasts an extensive inventory including a low hours nearly new (two years) Tohatsu 6hp outboard engine (mounted in a stern well).

A picturesque mooring at the sought after Emsworth Yacht Harbour may also be available for the buyer of this yacht.

This yacht is priced very competitively at £3,750 and will provide the buyer with excellent sailing and great value. N.B Please note her exact year of launch is not known so the year shown is an estimate.

Broker's Comments

This is a lovely sailing boat, perfect for inshore sailing, but quite capable of more adventurous trips. It has the flexibility of having a 2'6" draft for exploring those shallow harbours without loss of performance, whilst the drop plate improves upwind ability. A true classic family sailing boat.

Broker's Comments

A much loved yacht the Elizabethan 23 was commended to me by the owner, as ‘seaworthy, fast under sail and classic in appearance’. With the lifting keel configuration she can explore shallow harbours with relative ease but still perform well to the wind. She is in need of some cosmetic tidying up but once done will be a lovely boat for her new owner. And at this price she is a bargain.

  1. Review of Elizabethan 23

The Elizabethan 23 is equipped with a centerboard keel. A centerboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.76 - 0.86 meter (2.49 - 2.79 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
