The INTREPID yacht features interior design from the Damen Design Team. The INTREPID has no guest accommodations, as she is used as a support vessel for the INFINITY yacht. She has accommodation for 21 crew members and staff members.

She has several notable features that make her an ideal companion to the mothership. One of her most notable features is the helicopter deck aft.

The deck can receive a Eurocopter AS365 or Augusta Westland AW109 helicopter on board. The helicopter can then be lowered through the hangar into the below deck, where there is a helicopter workshop.

Along with the accommodations for the crew, she has 110 square meters of space concealed inside the yacht and 250 square meters of storage space for tenders and toys, as well as a dive center. The yacht has a fully equipped hospital on board.

The INTREPID yacht is one of two Sea Axe 6911 models built by Damen Yachting. She was delivered in 2016 from their shipyard in the Netherlands.

The shipbuilders penned the naval architecture and exterior design for INTREPID. She is the third-largest boat to be built by Damen Yachting, and she was last refitted in 2021.

Intrepid is a company that has never followed the mainstream. When “any color hull as long as it was white” was right, Intrepid offered a rainbow palette of Imron and powder-coated pipe work. When most open-console boats were built with decks cleared for hard-core angling, Intrepid offered outdoor lounges, transom seats and hull-side dive doors. Now this creative builder has turned a muscular 47-footer with four outboard engines into a yacht-and it’s brilliant.

“Yacht” wasn’t my first choice of words, at least before testing the 475. My first thought was that she would have more go-fast DNA than her sisters in the Intrepid line, after noting her power specs: four six-cylinder 275 hp Mercury Verados. And I wondered if perhaps this time Intrepid had stepped a bit too far outside of the envelope in its commitment to outboard power. But after a few minutes at the wheel, it was clear to me that John Michel, Intrepid’s creative force and owner, was spot-on, riding squarely atop the crest of outboard technology that has surged in recent years.

Technology is what allows the 475 to harness four outboards. Thanks to the Verado’s electronic control system one does not have to fiddle with four throttles; instead, engines are grouped to deliver their horsepower in perfect harmony (port and starboard), with only two throttles. The benefits of configuring four engines as two cannot be overstated. You don’t need a throttle man to tweak the 475’s performance at speed, nor will you feel ham-handed when you maneuver her in and out of tight spots dockside.

I collected our sea-trial data in a light chop on the St. Lucie River in Stuart, Fla. The 475 accelerates quickly to a maximum speed of 44.3 knots (6000 rpm). At 4500 rpm I recorded a speed of 31.4 knots and the engine electronics indicated a fuel burn of 52 gallons per hour. Her power steering delivers immediate and precise response and she can cut a turn in less than half the length of an average inboard-powered boat in her class. While she is relatively light and fast for her length, she had a solid feel as we ran through steep 4- to 5-footers in St. Lucie Inlet. Swinging her around offshore, I felt the Verados transmitted enough horsepower into the water to easily lift us above the following seas as we ran home into a stiff outgoing current. As she is a big boat turning relatively small high-speed props, the bowthruster is useful dockside.

While I tip my hat to the Mercury Verados, the 475’s excellent performance is in large part due to her hull design. Intrepid has been a pioneer in the art of sculpting stepped hulls. With a bit of science and a lot of practice, Intrepid seems to have zeroed in on the sweet spot in each of its designs in terms of efficiency and comfort at sea. The key to a stepped hull is the proper positioning of the steps and proper step ventilation. The company has long favored single transverse step configurations. Multistepped bottoms can sometimes be too trim-sensitive for pleasure-craft applications. The 475 features Intrepid’s second-generation step design-the same used for the 350 Intrepid I sea-trialed last year. As was the case with the 350, mum’s the word on specific design details other than to say the 475’s forward sections are fine and that she has a deadrise of approximately 21 degrees at the transom. Michel admits that he fiddles quite a bit with a hull’s form before committing it to production; clearly, he has an eye for what works.

Our test boat was built for Stuart, Fla., resident Todd Resnick who will use her to cruise Florida and the Bahamas with his young family. Resnick moved up from a 34-foot diesel-powered inboard and was looking for a well-built boat with more accommodations, less draft and less complication. Outboard power seemed the solution, but finding a boat large enough for his family was a challenge. “I wanted as much boat as I could manage comfortably,” says Resnick.

He discovered the 475 at a show and was impressed with the boat and its builder. “I’m a perfectionist; I don’t like to compromise on anything and that is the way John Michel approaches boat building,” says Resnick, whose primary requirement in a boat is safety. “Intrepid builds a strong, fast boat, and while I like to cruise in the mid-twenty knot range, I’m glad to know I’ve got the power and speed if I need it.” At 25 knots the 475 is planing efficiently and her fuel burn should be about 40 gallons per hour based on our sea-trial data.

The 475 is the largest boat Intrepid has built to date, and while all of this builder’s products are well above average in terms of design and finish, she is the first in my opinion that will be measured as a high-performance yacht. Her clean crisp profile follows the family line and is complemented by a rakish aluminum arch and a fiberglass hardtop. She is rife with the sorts of clever details that fans of the marque have come to expect. Aggressively styled hull-side windows are coated with a textured film that allows them to blend cleanly with the hull. Her walk-around side deck makes a trip to the bow comfortable and her hidden transom-side boarding gate makes it possible to board side-to or from a boatlift without hurtling over the coaming. The 475 is built in a new 30,000-square-foot production building at Intrepid’s facility in Largo, Fla. Stitched fiberglass and Kevlar reinforcements are laminated with vinylester resin, and high-density PVC coring is used in her bottom, hull sides and decks. Vacuum bagging is used to ensure proper bonding.

Intrepid’s creative solutions to challenges in design are often inspired by customer input. Boats on the “line” are referred to by customer name, not a number, and while there is a long list of options available, Intrepid is not close-minded when it comes to adding more. It is not uncommon for special requests to become standard options in Intrepid’s semi-custom approach to boat building.

Resnick’s boat has a hull-side dive door, transom bench seating and a 12kW diesel generator in a sound shield under the cockpit. The raised bridge has a seating area, a table and a small wet bar with an icemaker. The bridge area is air-conditioned and can be enclosed with isinglass. Cleverly integrated vents in the helm console discharge a cool blast aimed at a powder-coated aluminum helm seat that can be adjusted with a push of a button. Another push of a button lifts a section of the deck and allows access to a cavernous storage area where there is space for dive gear, fishing tackle and more.

The 475’s interior layout is ideal for cruising couples or families like the Resnicks. The main cabin has an open galley with a cook-top, a microwave-convection oven and dual-voltage refrigeration. A dual-access head has a separate shower. Yet another push of a button converts the forward seating area to a queen-size berth. The mid-ship master also has a queen-size berth; both areas are illuminated naturally by the 475’s hull-side windows. The interior is built using flawlessly tooled molded liners that add strength and stiffness to the structure. The satin-finished cherry cabinetwork and quality soft goods, hardware and fixtures add appropriate accents.

If you think outboard power is out of place on a 47-foot yacht, you need to take a ride on the 475. And if you are as impressed with her as Todd Resnick is, you will need to be patient, as there is currently a backlog of orders. In my view, the 475 is well worth the wait.

Boat Test: 2023 Intrepid 41 Valor

The Intrepid 41 Valor is three boats in one: a cabin cruiser, a dayboat entertainer, and a competent fishing boat. It is also the result of increasing the length of the 409 Valor, introduced in 2020, by about 2 feet and the beam by 7 inches to accommodate larger outboards. At the same time, the design was tweaked based on customer input.

Interior and Accessories

The most noticeable improvement? The wraparound swim platform. It is unobstructed by hoses or cables and features a new transom door. There’s more space in the aft cockpit, boosting fishability. The new center console is larger to accommodate larger electronic displays, such as the 22-inch Garmin MFD on our test boat. Owners also wanted a better companionway, so Intrepid borrowed the cabin door design from the 438 Evolution .

Our test boat featured every fishing option, including aquarium window upgrades to the standard pair of 25-gallon transom livewells. These also boasted the extra pump option, good insurance for steady flow. The Hooker sea-chest option prevents air from getting in the lines on rough runs. We counted 15 Gemlux rod holders, many of which double as cup holders.

Heading offshore in 3- to 4-foot seas, 33 mph seemed like the happiest speed, and the 41 Valor’s stepped hull delivered a smooth ride. Soon we deployed the optional outriggers. It was hot, so we extended the standard rear SureShade. I called dibs on the rear-facing lounge seat, the perfect place to wait for a bite. This seat raises electrically to reveal a long, deep storage compartment. A Frigid Rigid cooler resides under the helm seats and slides out on demand to preserve deck space. It also doubles as a seat. Underway, crew can sit on a fold-down stern bench, with a high seatback for comfort that stows when fishing. The dive door is fat-yellowfin-huge and features a hefty latch that creates an industrial-strength seal. A stout dive ladder eases reboarding. 

The amidships entertainment zone offers wraparound seating, accommodating up to eight adults under the hardtop. The starboard-side couch has a pull-out seat bottom that transforms it into a playpen. Intrepid adds some practical wow factor with a cooler on the port side that tilts open electrically. And for snack service, an available table features a side-mounted pedestal to keep the deck clear. Order the Riviera option to up your entertaining mojo; this bundles a sink, grill and ice maker, and a refrigerator integrated into the helm seat.

Step belowdecks and it’s hard not to start daydreaming about long fishing trips or cruises. The amount of ambient light is impressive, thanks to the 10 windows. There’s a double berth amidships and a V-berth master with a dining table that electrically serves as a filler section for the bed. A yacht-style head compartment features a separate shower, and there’s an abbreviated galley with an Isotherm refrigerator, single electric stovetop and microwave.

Unlike most boats, the 41 Valor has a wide range of engine options. One of the first built came rigged with a pair of 600 hp Mercury Verado V-12 engines. When compared to another boat rigged with triple Mercury Racing 450R outboards, it provided similar performance, though the extra 150 hp of the triple-engine setup yielded a couple of extra miles per hour on the top-end. Intrepid also optionally offers Yamaha ’s new 450 hp XTO Offshore engines.

Our test boat was rigged with three of the even-newer, normally aspirated 400 hp Mercury Verado V-10 outboards, which sport a powerful 150-amp alternator. These are the standard engines for this model, which starts at $1,247,000. The dual 600 hp V-12 option pushes the price up $50,000, but these include some high-tech features, such as a two-speed transmission for better hole shots and independently articulating lower units.

The V-10s showed plenty of snap out of the hole, as evidenced by a zero-to-20 mph time of just 6.5 seconds. Because of the long, enclosed bow, forward visibility was partially obscured for a short time when achieving plane, which might be a problem for shorter captains. But Intrepid added a helm deck that can be electronically raised 4 inches, which helped.

Our performance test was thwarted by a trawler that grounded in the only mile stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway where boats can run on plane in Fort Lauderdale. Sea conditions precluded running at top speed offshore. So, we used Mercury Marine’s test results from when this same boat performed at Lake X in central Florida. Mercury was able to squeeze out a top speed of 61.4 mph.

Searching for a boat to compare with the Intrepid 41 Valor’s trifecta of missions: cruiser, fishboat and dayboat? Factoring in its ultra-premium build and impressive list of standard features that include a gyrostabilizer only makes it harder. We’d suggest shoppers inspect the slightly larger Pursuit 445 OS, though its amidships gathering area is enclosed. It retails for $1,434,300 with triple 425 hp Yamaha XTO Offshore outboards—its only engine option.

Interior and Accessories

At the transom, you will find dual dive platforms each equipped with their own boarding ladder. This feature meets the recommendation set forth by the American Boat and Yacht Council for solo reboarding. The dual boarding ladders allow for solo entry into the water and onto the boat making it safer for everyone.

Moving forward from the engines and swim platforms, you will find a large service platform area. This platform was designed with ease in mind and makes it simple for you to check on and maintain your engines.

Above the deck storage is available at the aft port side area and aft starboard area. These spacious storage areas can be used to keep your gear or equipment tucked away nicely or you can choose optional baitwells. If you do choose to use these areas for storage, there is the option to add refrigeration to them. If choosing the baitwells each includes a window and is rigged for convenience. If you plan to use the boat for fishing, the baitwells are placed in a convenient location and make fishing from the aft of the boat simple.

In between the storage areas is the option to add an integrated rear folding seat. This seat serves as additional seating for your passengers and can be flipped up when it is not in use. If you plan to primarily fish on your boat, the addition of this seat is a great choice, as it gives you somewhere to sit as you fight to bring your catch on board.

Entry onto the boat is easy with the hull side dive door that offers a lift up and a rotate design to maximize space. No longer will you need to worry about giving up precious cockpit space while the dive door is open. Passengers will feel safe boarding through this door. Should you want to use the dive door for entry into the water, you can. Included and stored under the cabin sole is a pull-out boarding ladder. Passengers can deploy the ladder and then use it to enter and exit the water.

There is a hull side platform that folds out to extend seating on the water. You can fold down the platform and lay on it, use it to enter the water, or even tie up your jet ski to it. The platform does include a ladder.

A small kitchenette can be found prior to reaching the cockpit area. The kitchenette includes a sink, a pull-out cooler, a grill, a refrigerator, and an ice maker. The top of the kitchenette does fold down to close it off when it is not in use forming additional counter space.

An aft cockpit baitwell and fish box are present and can be used for additional storage space if you choose. On both outside skirts of the cockpit are below the deck storage bins. If you choose to outfit the boat with the optional baitwells in the rear, these below the deck storage areas make the perfect place to store your gear and equipment.

The cockpit is home to the captain and is protected from rain and wind thanks to the full-size windshield. The windshield does not take away from the view around you either. The cockpit area has two rows of seating for a total of six seats. The seats are large and plush to provide you with ultimate comfort. Overhead is a T-top that provides shade for all cockpit seating.

The helm itself is expansive and set up just the way you would expect it to be. There is plenty of room for electronics and additional accessories to be installed. The console dashboard does feature large dual screens. The cockpit features a high and low deck that you can raise up or down with the single click of a button. The addition of this feature allows you to adjust your visibility.

Moving away from the cockpit is a side entry door. Here, you will find an ample amount of storage including a closet-like space with drawer units and a dry locker. To the left of the storage area is a separate head with a shower included. The head features a door for privacy.

Heading to the stern of the boat is a tilt-out trash can and dock line storage, one on each side of the boat for convenience. A large rod locker is provided to ensure you can keep your fishing rods safe when not in use. The rod locker also substitutes for another large storage compartment.

The front of the boat is set up for your passengers to enjoy time out on the water. An oversized sun pad is located here that allows your passengers to catch the sun’s rays. The sun pad can be lifted up to reveal a storage area. The sun pad does feature adjustable armrests and cup holders. Additionally, the backrests to the sun pad are electrically actuated allowing you to adjust them for further comfort.

Wraparound forward-facing seating surrounds the bow of the boat. Centered in the middle of the wraparound seating is a high-low table. If you want additional seating and lounging, a filler cushion can be used to transform the table into a sun pad. When not in use, the sun pad goes down into the floor to stay tucked out of the way. Storage space is present underneath the wraparound seating and can be accessed easily by simply lifting the seat up. The backrests to the seats do fold down to reveal rod racks.

First Damen Sea Axe 6911 is launched, christened Intrepid

Damen 's largest ever yacht support vessel, the 69 metre Sea Axe 6911, has been launched and christened Intrepid .

The Sea Axe range is built in cooperation between Amels and its parent company Damen . The Sea Axe 6911 is an evolution of the current flagship, the 67.15 metre Sea Axe 6711, of which two are launched, including Garcon .

Modeled after Damen’s high-speed patrol and offshore support vessels, the Sea Axe range is the ultimate superyacht toy box, designed to shadow the mothership and carry everything from helicopters to boats and submarines to extra staff.

According to Amels, client feedback inspired the Sea Axe 6911. “The owner’s team came to us with a lot of client-specific customisations for what was then our 67-metre platform,” says Damen product director Mark Vermeulen. “They put a lot of thought into how the owner would like to operate the yacht support vessel in combination with the mother yacht… Now we’ve put a lot of that client feedback into the updated design – the Sea Axe 6911.”

The current 67 metre yacht was expanded to make room for a helicopter hangar. “Now the helicopter can go into the sunken helicopter garage,” says Victor Caminada, describing how the helipad opens to allow the helicopter to take haven.

The new Sea Axe 6911 also boasts a helicopter workshop, dive centre, 110 square metres of storage below decks and 250 square metres of deck space for tenders and toys. There are accommodations for 22 crew or staff.

Amels reports a second is in build on spec.
