RNSYC is an exclusive location, provided with a bar and a gastronomic restaurant and a multipurpose meeting room up to 40 persons. It is situated in the Ostend marina. Magnificent view over the harbour and the sea guaranteed.

The club was founded in 1946 by a close group of Snipe and Papillon sailors and has grown into one of the most dynamic water sports clubs and marinas on the Belgian coast. It is the only yacht club in Belgium located in the city centre. All shops, restaurants, train and bus connections, museums, etc. are within walking distance.

Founded Year

The Royal North Sea Yacht Club was established in the winter of 1946-1947 by a group of young enthusiasts sailing Snipes and Papillons. The then Lord Mayor of Ostend, Henri Serruys, put The Montgomery dock at the disposal of the Club and with the Commodore Georges Timmermans DSC at the helm, this great yacht Club was born. The first Dragons appeared at the Club in the 50’s and since then the Dragon fleet has been the core of the Club’s activities. The ‘ELAN’ donated to late King Baudouin I has been very active Dragon of the fleet. Over the years many major Championships, RORC and Yacht Races have been organised by the RNSYC and visited Ostend. The RNSYC persuing relentlessly its efforts to promote the sailing activities was awarded ahead of major applicants, the organisation of the Dragon Gold Cup 2001, in co-operation with the International Dragon Association, The KBYV – FRBY, the Belgian Dragon Association and thanks to the board as well as all club members the Dragon Gold Cup 2001 became a magnificent and successful event.

RNSYC has everything for pleasure craft. Thanks to the open access to the sea, the port can be reached in all weather situations, tidal heights and current conditions. Located in the middle of the Belgian section of the North Sea coast, it is the ideal stop between the Netherlands, France or England. The Royal North Sea YC in Montgomery Dock is most convenient and usually has space. You either berth alongside the central pontoons, or bows to with a stern line on a buoy. It is close to shops and beach and has a very good restaurant. Although you are sheltered from the wind, nights may not be totally quiet due to noise from the city and a regular scend that seems to be bouncing around the dock, so the boat will be moving around a bit. Mercator is good too, behind the lock with the added benefit of totally still water, but with drawbacks: loss of time going through the lock, and more traffic noise around the marina. The supermarket is on the doorstep, facilities could be better. RYCO is at the back of the harbour, has a very nice club house, but is a 20 minute walk from the centre, through desolate harbour surroundings, has a lot of noise from the main coastal road passing 20 metres from the marina, and often gets a lot of dust from the harbour grounds close by. Entrance and departure are easy and straightforward in all but the worst conditions. If in doubt, call harbour control on Ch 09.
