Review of SR 33

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

DaggerBoard

The SR 33 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.19 - 1.29 meter (3.90 - 4.20 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for SR 33 is about 234 kg/cm, alternatively 1312 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 234 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1312 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

The new BAVARIA SR33 – The latest premiere of the successful SR-LINE

published on September 30th 2022 With the BAVARIA SR33, BAVARIA YACHTS is announcing another model of their successful SR-LINE, following the SR41 and the SR36, for the 2023 season.

As with all motor yachts in the BAVARIA SR-LINE, the focus during development was on creating space for life on deck. Below deck, the BAVARIA SR33 also impresses with a well-thought-out room layout, providing generous space for four people.

sr 33 sailboat

After the BAVARIA SR41 and the BAVARIA SR36, the BAVARIA SR33 is the newest member of the BAVARIA SR-LINE , which clearly follows the design philosophy of the SR-LINE. The development team at BAVARIA YACHTS has thought of plenty of clever solutions to meet all the demands family & friends crews might have. On board the BAVARIA SR33, individual relaxation, sociable hours at sea and yachting fun in general each have their own space. That makes the BAVARIA SR33 the ideal yacht for individual requirements.

Simply enjoying the sun and time with the family. The bow with its generous sunbed is the perfect place to relax , with the comfortable upholstery stretching across the entire surface of the structure, including useful cupholders for refreshments.

sr 33 sailboat

Spending time as a couple or with friends is the focus in the cockpit. Breakfast, dinner, or a small snack are quickly prepared at the large wet bar including a cooking plate, fridge and sink, and can be served directly at the large cockpit table. Flexible thanks to the fold-down backrest of the sunbed at the stern, there is space for up to six people.

Whatever you would like to do, the sunbed at the stern fulfils several functions, as is typical for the SR-LINE. It is a sunbed, a bench seat for the cockpit table, storage space or, with the optional lowerable table, transforms into a beach terrace right near the water. And from the integrated bathing platform, the sea is just a hop away.

Experiencing power and freedom together was the development team’s goal when designing the helmstand. Thanks to the construction of the hardtop with robust, stainless-steel struts at the stern and large window areas, there is almost an unobstructed 360° view . From the lounge area portside, you have the best view ahead and can enjoy the sun and the wind through the large sunroof together with the helmsman.

Below deck, the BAVARIA SR33’s concept offers plenty of light, plenty of space, four sleeping berths, a cabin and a large salon. The salon and the large bed in the bow merge to become a generous, loft-like room. During the day, the BAVARIA SR33’s open room design with large hull windows and skylight provide light and a pleasant sense of space, no matter the weather. And if all guests would like to stay overnight, the salon table can be lowered to provide a further sleeping berth, so nothing gets in the way of cosy hours below deck, even for six people.

sr 33 sailboat

A double bed with the dream dimensions of 2.00 x 1.60 meters and a comfortable couch turn the cabin amidships into your personal suite after a long day at sea. Plenty of storage space for shorts and shirts for you and your partner are a given with BAVARIA YACHTS.

Spacious with a separate shower, a free-standing washbasin and classy fittings , the bathroom is not just functional, but also a place where you feel at ease.

As with the sister ships in the SR-LINE, the BAVARIA SR33’s design and lines come from the famous Italian yacht designer Marco Casali and his team. The concept, layout and engineering are, of course, from BAVARIA’s experienced development team. The 11.40 m long and 3.46 m wide hull was optimised for rapid, safe handling characteristics by the experts from the naval architecture office Micad. Double engines from Volvo Penta and Mercruiser of 500 to 700 HP, as well as a single drive of 380 HP from Volvo Penta, provide powerful yet economical propulsion.

The BAVARIA SR36 was just nominated for the 2023 European Powerboat of the Year and the 2023 Best of Boats awards. The BAVARIA SR41 was already crowned 2022 Powerboat of the Year in England. With the BAVARIA SR33, another member with award potential is joining the BAVARIA SR-LINE. Its official world debut is planned for January 2023 at the boot in Dusseldorf.

Bavaria SR33 sea trial: The best compact cruiser Bavaria has ever built?

  • Top stories

Can Bavaria recreate the joys of the award-winning SR line on its smallest platform yet? Alex Smith heads for northern Germany to test the Bavaria SR33...

Bavaria’s SR line has been a major success since it burst onto the scene in 2020. With its elevated hull sides, charming transom dinette and inboard-only engines, the original Bavaria SR41 combined excellent volume with a rewarding layout, great looks and a really impressive driving experience.

Since then, Bavaria has done a great job of transferring those same talents onto the smaller Bavaria SR36 pretty much unscathed – but can they really repeat the trick with a boat as compact as the Bavaria SR33?

Well, the first thing to note as we arrive at Neustadt marina in northern Germany is the fact that this is not actually a 33-footer at all. With a hull of 35ft 9in and an overall length of 37ft 5in, alongside that same muscular aesthetic as we’ve seen elsewhere in the range, this feels like quite a substantial boat.

It’s still shorter than the SR36 (40ft 3in LOA) and uses the same lovely two-part hull windows. It’s also good to see that Bavaria has retained that all-important lynchpin of the SR dayboating experience: the aft-facing transom dinette.

It’s a great feature, enabling four people to perch in comfort above the integrated swim platform. As on the larger models, the table can be dropped into the gap, creating an attractive sunpad – or it can be specced as an integrated storage box, topped with sunbed cushions.

Galeon-325-gto-test-drive-review-video

Galeon 325 GTO test drive review: The last word in luxury day boating

In this case, the reduced length has compelled Bavaria to factor in a swinging backrest, which means that, when the aft cockpit bench is in operation, the transom dinette will only seat two. But the fact that the feature has survived intact is a major bonus for this smallest of the SR craft.

As you move forward, it’s clear that Bavaria has also tried to maximise cockpit space by keeping the side decks quite narrow. Happily, it has also worked hard to mitigate the impact of that with sturdy toerails, lofty guardrails and a useful (if rather short) rooftop grabrail.

While it still feels a bit tight making your way fore and aft, these features do help ease any trepidation – and once you get there, the big foredeck sunpad provides a handy extra space to relax with a drink.

Back in the cockpit, cocooned within wraparound glass, things again feel pretty good. It adopts the same port dinette, starboard wet bar and raised helm layout as the rest of the fleet.

To maximise versatility, the Bavaria SR33 can be specced with a full-scale fabric sunroof or a smaller fibreglass unit above the helm – and you can also pick either a camping cover that turns the cockpit into a climate-controlled day space or a sun shade for extra shelter above the aft dinette.

Either way, the use of elevated mouldings at the starboard helm and the port co-pilot seat are clearly a means of maximising volume down below – and while I remain unconvinced by the merits of the elevated chaise longue to port of the helm, its benefits for the space down below are impossible to dispute.

Update: The Bavaria SR33 will be making its UK debut at the 2023 Southampton Boat Show .

Test : Bavaria SR 33 - a sporty family boat

Jan-Ole Puls

 ·  04.07.2023

From the side, the Bavaria SR 33 looks almost like its big sister, the SR 36

With the new Bavaria SR 33, the SR series has been extended, or rather rounded off at the bottom. The SR 33 is the smallest boat in the series. But its big sisters, the SR36 and the SR 41, show her what it means to be a successful boat. The 36 was nominated for the European Power Boat of the Year Award 2022 and the 41 won a similar prize. It is therefore not surprising that the new SR once again features the popular lounge, which faces aft and offers a view of the sea. As with all SR-Line models, Bavaria says that space for life on deck was emphasised when designing the boat. At the same time, it aims to score points with a well thought-out space concept below deck. So is she a real all-rounder family boat? She celebrated her world premiere at Boot Düsseldorf 2023.

As far as the hull of the Bavaria is concerned, the figures are confusing. If you look at the overall length of the SR33 compared to the SR36, you realise that the 33 is longer, by a whole 2 centimetres. That's not much, but a 33-foot boat that's longer than a 36-foot boat? That sounds wrong. Marcus Schlichting, press spokesman at Bavaria, who accompanied us on the test in Neustadt, clarifies this for us: On the 33, the bathing platform is permanently mounted and is therefore included in the length. On the 36, it is attached and therefore does not have to be counted. In fact, the hull is 88 centimetres shorter and 40 centimetres narrower than on the 36. Otherwise, the two are very similar.

Layout on board

Our test boat is moored in Neustadt in Holstein on the Baltic Sea. The holiday destination for many owners is calm today and the waves are ideal for a test with a height of 30 centimetres. We are on the official build number one with Swedish twin engines. The two Volvo Penta engines each produce 300 hp and run on diesel. The engine compartment in which they are installed is large and tidy. Everything is easily accessible and clearly organised. Nothing stands in the way of routine maintenance, except perhaps the slightly too small engine compartment flap in the cockpit. At 42 x 48 centimetres, it is narrow, but still large enough to fit through.

The steering position is clearly arranged and equipped with a normal double throttle grip and a joystick. The steering wheel is easy to grip when sitting or standing and the seating position is also good. The gearstick and steering are electric. If you want to view the engine data, you can do so on the Simrad plotter. Two 12-inch screens are installed on our test boat; the boat is supplied with just one 7-inch screen as standard. An induction charging cradle for the smartphone, the control element for the bow thruster and toggle switches for controlling the deck light and bilge pumps were also installed.

There is a berth on the port side, which is 1.78 metres long and 0.63 metres wide. Next to it is a co-driver's seat. Further aft, with a view over the stern and to starboard, an L-shaped sofa has been installed. Up to eight people can sit and eat here at the teak table. The backrest to the stern can be folded down so that you can either sit at the table or use the sunbathing area in the stern. This is large (1.72 x 1.28 metres).

A special gimmick is the extendable table in the rear. This means you can also sit at a table in the stern. A small galley with fridge, two-burner hob and plenty of storage space is of course also available and should not be missing on a family boat. The upholstery is in grey and white, which looks very modern and elegant. The upholstery is well and neatly finished. The floor is covered with plantation teak, which has been expertly done. You can stand in the entire cockpit without any problems.

Spacious below deck

A large double bed (1.80 metres x 1.99 metres) and a seating area adorn the interior of the boat. The light oak wood and colour-contrasting upholstery give the interior a fresh and airy feel, just as you would expect from a boat from the year 2023. The centre cabin offers a double bed (1.60 x 1.97 metres) as well as a sofa and plenty of cupboards. A bathroom with electric toilet, washbasin and shower are installed on the starboard side. The shower cubicle and washbasin in the bathroom are separated by a glass door. There is plenty of storage space throughout the boat, which emphasises the focus on a family boat. All in all, it can be said that you can comfortably spend a longer holiday cruise with 4 people on the Bavaria SR33.

Test drive with the Bavaria SR33

Now it's time to cast off and see what the new Bavaria can do. The 9.6 tonne boat slowly pushes out of the harbour towards the open Baltic Sea. At slow displacement speed, the boat travels straight ahead as if on rails. She doesn't yaw and doesn't make any other mistakes. Thanks to the twin engines, joystick steering and additional bow thruster, manoeuvring is easy even in the tightest of spaces. When we step on the gas, the boat starts to glide at around 2100 revolutions per minute. The speed is 14 knots. In our opinion, the best speed for a good ride is 3000 rpm. The boat then runs at around 24.2 knots. Visibility is good and the boat is stable. When we put the lever on the table, the plotter shows a boat speed of 31.2 knots with a diesel consumption of 118 litres for both engines. With a noise level of 85 dB(A) at the helm, the boat is not exactly quiet.

If you now turn the rudder fully, the SR33 will take a bend unimpressed. Visibility in port turns is somewhat restricted, which is due to the position of the helm position. As soon as the boat heels less, you can see everything again. She performs the slalom parkour unspectacularly well, and she also handles the tacks to starboard or port cleanly. The boat sits well on the rudder during all manoeuvres and gives the helmsman good feedback at all times. The turning circle forwards is good at one and a half boat lengths. When the boat is lying in the water without speed and the wave comes from the side, you notice the narrower hull compared to the 36. It feels a little tippy. But when the wave comes from aft, it's no problem at all. Then the boat lies like a board in the wave. In terms of workmanship and equipment, the SR33 has nothing to hide. Both the interior and the exterior are manufactured and finished in an exemplary manner.

With the SR33, Bavaria has succeeded in building a well-made family boat. The twin engines make it easy to handle in any situation and even mooring is no problem with the family thanks to the bow thruster and joystick steering. All in all, a very successful boat with good workmanship and a well thought-out concept.
