Customised features

As with all Heesen series yachts, Vida includes several highly customised features designed to meet the specific requirements of her highly experienced owner. As she will serve as a mothership for a fleet of sportfish boats, Vida’s original design for a forward tender garage was reworked to create a larger owner’s suite, with the foredeck itself now catering to two tenders. Her sundeck hardtop has also been raised six inches to allow for more headroom – a feature that will be carried forward to future models – with the resulting design carefully considered so as not to upset the perfect balance of her profile.

First impressions

Muscular, elegant, angular yet svelte, Vida’s exterior lines come from the board of Omega Architects’ Frank Laupman. Like other yachts in the 55m Steel series, Vida’s profile is clean and crisp, with characteristic floor-to-ceiling windows providing uninterrupted views while flooding the interior with natural light.

Step aboard

Stunning both in layout and in style, Vida’s interior impresses from the very first moment you step on board. Based on architecture developed by Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini, her finish and décor comes from Be Design in Boca Raton, Florida – the studio’s first yacht interior project.

Motor Yacht

Vida is the third in the successful 55m FDHF Steel class, which features muscular exterior lines by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects.

To create the interior décor of Vida, the Owner appointed Be Design Associates from Florida with whom he had previously worked on several residential projects. The Be Design team worked on an interior architectural structure penned by Francesco Paszkowski and Margerita Casprini. Twelve guests are accommodated in five suites located on the lower deck and a magnificent 80-square-meter owner’s stateroom set forward on the main deck. Further, a stunning backlit onyx arch in the main saloon will guarantee a wow effect when boarding Vida. At 55m and 740GT, Vida offers a maximum speed of 16 knots and frugal fuel consumption that gives a remarkable range of 4,500nm at 13 knots, thanks to the progressive hull design devised by van Oossanen Naval Architects. Combining magnificent comfort with optimised efficiency throughout the speed spectrum, Heesen’s 55m FDHF steel class sets a new standard in superyacht performance.

BOA VIDA is meticulously designed for guest living, where every deck and corner invites exploration. The main deck aft features a centralized, raised U-shaped sofa that faces aft, offering a picturesque view into the swim platform below. An adjacent wet bar and buffet complete the outdoor ambiance, seamlessly connecting with the main salon through large sliding doors.

Inside, the main salon presents a harmonious blend of comfort and sophistication. A large L-shaped couch, fold-down TV, and floor-to-ceiling windows adorn the space, finished in white oak and high-gloss light wood. Moving upward to the skylounge, a day head, L-shaped sofa, and swivel armchairs create an inviting atmosphere, accompanied by one of seven wet bars strategically placed throughout the yacht.

Accommodations on BOA VIDA are nothing short of opulent. She welcomes up to 10 guests in five staterooms. The owner's suite, located on the main deck boasts a centralized king-size bed, a sitting area, a hidden TV forward and a spacious bathroom with his-and-hers toilets and sinks, standing shower and separate oversized tub. On the lower deck are two VIP rooms with queen beds and two convertible twins offer luxurious comfort for guests, each equipped with en-suites and vanity/desk areas. Further accommodations play host for a crew of six.

As you ascend through the decks, the skylounge aft unfolds a large hexagon table with seating for 10, a full bar, and a barbeque, creating an alfresco entertainment area with optional shading. The sundeck is a haven of relaxation, featuring a Jacuzzi, sunpads, a reversible lounge area, and a wet bar. This space is primed to serve as the main alfresco entertainment spot and a relaxing open-air retreat, whichever way guests plan to utilize it. The sky deck offers guests a wonderful sociable area on the towering top section of the yacht with a semi-covered bar and jacuzzi surrounded by sun pads and open lounge area, with opposing corner sofas, to aft.

The bridge deck offers exterior decks aft and forward with sunbathing the focus on the foredeck, thanks to a wide sun-padded area and u-shaped sofa. On the aft deck, there is a lovely round dining table which can seat everyone on board in a very sociable configuration and two corner sofas surrounding coffee tables, perfect for after-dinner relaxation.

The main deck aft creates a cosy covered lounge with a comfortable u-shaped sofa and coffee table plus a central glass panel with views down into the beach club/swim platform.

INTERIOR Whisper quiet automatic doors between the aft deck and salon glide open to reveal an open plan layout with expansive and luxurious seating illuminated with the natural light streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Finished with luxurious oak, hi-tech AV equipment and an abundance of storage, there is a wet bar, lounge furniture and a dining room. Amidships on the main deck find a well-equipped galley to port and convenient day head off the main corridor to starboard.

BOA VIDA Specifications

The Sky Lounge is a great place for a movie night or an evening cocktail and features a bar and a great corner sofa arrangement surrounding a coffee table. Forward is the wheelhouse packed with technology to create smooth cruising. On the lower deck, the beach club features an L-shaped sofa, and bar area and leads through to a fully equipped gym, sauna and bathroom.

The master suite is forward on the main deck and the other guest accommodation is on the lower deck.

The main deck master is a private oasis for owner’s or primary guests with a forward-facing king-sized bed, lounge area and vanity/desk. The huge ensuite is forward and features double sinks, a shower and full bathtub. CONSTRUCTION:

· The Yacht is constructed in high-density closed-cell structural foam. High density foam allows for high temperature and advantages in thermal and acoustic insulation.

· Longitudinal and lateral fiberglass foam-core stringers.

· Fiberglass with infusion lamination manufacturing technology, increases strength by 20% and reduces weight by 18% compared to hand-layup.

· Reinforced collision bulkhead.

· Cross-knit carbon fiber in high stress areas to increase structural integrity and torsional strength.

· Water-tight bulkheads with sound and temperature insulation.

· Ocean Alexander employs various techniques to reduce sound and vibration. Some of these techniques include multiple insulation barriers including reflective materials, absorptive materials, dampening materials, air pockets and flexible isolation mounts for controlling sound and noise transmission.

· Painted exterior surfaces with professional grade epoxy-based primers and Alexseal polyurethane paint resulting in the highest gloss retention compared with gelcoat or other paint brands.

· All exterior hardware to be 316 stainless steel or per manufacturer requirements.

· Aluminum components meet marine grade 5086 or 6061 specification.

· Engine foundation: Main engine stringer will be constructed from stainless steel plates custom formed to encapsulate over engine structural stringers. Allows for industry leading support and isolation.

· Frameless windows.

Hull / Bottom:

· Interior structural components all bonded to hull.

· Three coats of "self-polishing" antifouling bottom paint shall be applied on three anti-blister epoxy barrier coats, "Seahawk" paint or equal.

· Rub rail w/ 316 stainless steel striking plate.

· Bronze through-hull fittings.

MECHANICAL:

Main Engines:

· MAN® V12 1900 HP engine "MAN Gold Standard"

· Stainless steel engine beds and stainless-steel removable rails on side of engines.

· Delta-T® intake/exhaust fans with variable frequency drives shall be mounted to facilitate the intake and/or exhaust of air through the machinery spaces and providing a high air exchange rate. Air intake & exhaust ducts shall have fire dampers installed with manual and automatic triggering that shall be tied into the machinery shut down circuits.

· Delta-T® moisture eliminators shall be installed at front of intake and exhaust ducts.

· Delta-T® fans for engine exhaust located on superstructure vs hull side. Maximizes water protection and salt spray intrusion into engine space, extending life of engine room components (Unique OA feature).

· Ocean Alexander employs aerospace grade "autoclave" to make "hard coat" exhaust. Further, AL-6XN alloys is used (also used in Saturn V rocket nozzle for spray ring in exhaust system to lower heat transmission) Ocean Alexander is unique in utilizing Military standards that ensures optimum and sustained performance in its exhaust system.

· Engine raw water-cooling using cupronickel 90/10 which offers superior corrosion resistance and inherent bio­ antifouling.

Shafting,Propellers, Steering:

· Ocean Alexander designs in oversized shafts, rudder and other drive train systems typically one-class larger than the competition. This results in superior handling and longevity in the Ocean Alexander drive-train system.

· High performance computer designed and machined Nibral propellers.

· Glendinning hydraulic steering system.

· Stainless steel rudders w/integrated zinc plates.

Windlass / Mooring:

· Dual (2) hydraulic vertical anchor windlass with remote foot switches.

· Dual (2) 240 lbs. anchor with 250' anchor chain (1/2" HT) each side.

· Hands-free anchor chain wash system. Automatic operation for freshwater cleaning of chain during anchor operation.

· Two 1500W, 24VDC motor capstans on Aft Deck, with foot switch.

Air Conditioning:

· Dometic® chilled water system air conditioning system, rated for "Extreme Tropical Climates" (with reverse cycle heat for operation down to 40°Fwater temp).

8 Experiences That Make A Windstar Cruise Worth The Price

I n December, I had my first cruise with Windstar. Boarding the Star Legend in St. Maarten, my husband and I set sail on a romantic and adventurous itinerary with a cruise brand known for offering exceptional vacations and a reputation to back that claim. We had a week of sailing through the Caribbean, soaking up the sights in Antigua, the BVI, and St. Bart’s to create memories that will last for a lifetime and really get to know the Windstar brand. As an avid cruiser, this cruise’s price tag was a bit higher than my previous cruises. But, let me tell you how that extra bit more than makes up for it with these eight experiences that make a Windstar cruise worth the price tag.

Windstar hosted me as a guest to familiarize myself with this brand. As always, opinions and reviews are 100 percent my own and unbiased. 

1. Smaller Crowds

It might surprise you that the Windstar yachts only hold about 200–310 passengers. Not only is this a big difference in the mega cruise ships that often make you feel like a herd of cattle going through long buffet lines and waiting to disembark the ship at port, but it allows you to get to know the other cruisers. It also allows the crew to know you — your cruise preferences and your name. While I have met friendly cruise staff on each of the 50+ cruises I’ve taken, this was more like we were all just guests of Windstar, not crew and cruisers.

I especially think that, in the craziest of times we have faced since 2020, this is one of the most appealing cruise offerings possible. The Windstar team has assumed extra sanitation measures and are held to the highest standard of safety practices. This was apparent from the personalized service of staff members making up our buffet plates to the onboard doctor that was a seamless and pleasant transaction for the guests.

2. Windstar’s Stylish Yacht & Rooms

There are no cruise boats or ships with Windstar, only yachts and sailboats. I took the Star Legend , a small, incredibly picturesque yacht. The Legend was small enough to learn my way around in a short time, without wasting precious vacation time. Still, it was big enough to cuddle up for a warm-weather nap, read a good book, have an intimate conversation, or watch as we sailed through the mesmerizing blue waters.

Speaking only for the Star Legend , this yacht offers all-suite rooms. We even had a full-size closet, perfect for storing suitcases, hanging our clothes, and keeping our main room straight. Features in our stateroom that rated highest were L’Occitane en Provence toiletries, cozy robes, a comfortable couch, a heavenly bed, premium Egyptian cotton sheets, and a fully-stocked mini-fridge.

3. Lesser-Known Ports Of Call

I’ve studied cruise itineraries for over 20 years, and the ports of call for large cruise ships rarely change. I was shocked to see the remote destinations that Windstar Cruises travel to. My husband and I took the St. Maarten cruise that went to the British Virgin Islands, and though we had been to Virgin Gorda with others, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke were two places I’ve seldom seen on other itineraries. And we also had the chance to go to Gustavia (St. Bart’s), the island of all things luxury and exuberant.

If you are jonesing for a one-of-a-kind cruise, I’ll let you know that Windstar Cruises visits Tahiti , Kobe, Bordeaux , and Honfleur , not your typical cruise ports. 

Pro Tip: Cruise lines can change the itinerary for the passenger’s safety and best experiences. This is common practice, so please roll with the punches should it happen. Often the passengers are unaware of the entire situation unfolding that causes these decisions.

4. Windstar’s Exceptional Food

When the general public talks about cruises, they tend to think of huge, overflowing buffets with mediocre food, but lots of it. And that makes many cruisers perfectly happy. I tend to lean toward quality over quantity, so the high-end food choices — many locally sourced — on Windstar Cruises made me a happy girl. Our meals were terrific!

Indulge in delightful breakfasts with an array of made-to-order eggs, fluffy pancakes, and decadent eggs Benedict. The buffet caters to all tastes, featuring a variety of Indian delights, smoked meats, comforting food favorites, soups, and sandwiches for lunch. With 24-hour room service, unlimited ice cream, and a charming coffee shop serving tempting mini-sandwiches and sweets, your culinary desires will be satisfied.

I was shocked (mic-drop here) that the main dining room — the basic one for those of you new to the cruise world — is the only cruise line at sea endorsed by and is the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation . Yes, you read that right. The foundation was created in part to recognize the efforts of those putting America’s culinary skills a cut above the rest, and that is apparent with the chef-inspired dishes on these ships. 5. Star Legend’s Specialty Restaurants

As if the food wasn’t remarkable enough, there are specialty restaurants on a Windstar cruise. The Star Legend had the lovely Spanish restaurant, Cuadro 44, and Candles, a classic steakhouse. Cuadro 44 offers coastal Spanish tapas, wines, and exotic seafood in a vibrant, energetic setting, while Candles is a more romantic restaurant with white table cloths, candlelight, and al fresco dining. 

Now get this… they are included in your cruise fare. You pay no additional fees to dine in these restaurants that serve high-end items like Ibérico ham, lamb chops, Galician-style octopus, and jumbo prawns.

Fun Fact: Cuadro 44 only holds 38 passengers, so this small-scale dining experience is highly desirable.

6. Adventurous Cruise Excursions

I’ve been told that Windstar caters to a more active group of travelers. The website boasts 2,500 one-of-a-kind tours, and that is mind-boggling. I found many of the Windstar cruise excursions to be on the moderate to strenuous side of the scale, but there was still plenty for others to enjoy, too. From scuba diving to visiting private islands, there was a wide range of activities and experiences.

Windstar also offers many custom tours, including a carefully-curated excursion for your family and friends, or even a solo trip, to see the sights you wish to visit with an English-speaking guide in a private car or van. These guides are also fully bonded, insured, and licensed.

Check into the culinary shore excursions onboard Windstar Cruises, as well. These opportunities take cruise passengers to local wineries, breweries, and even hands-on cooking classes to learn from the locals and eat and drink with goods from the region you are visiting.

7. Ratio Of Cruise Staff To Cruise Guests

My cruise ship could potentially hold 312 passengers. On this particular sailing, there were only around 158 passengers, which meant running at half capacity for guests. This meant no lines, no packed swimming pools or hot tubs, and nearly 1.25 cruise staff per passenger. 

I swear, I don’t know how the Windstar staff does it, but they would remember every name, drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) choice, favorite things, and where we were from. Often, we didn’t have time to think we needed something before a smiling face showed up with said item in hand. I kept thinking of the Ritz Carlton tagline, “My pleasure Mrs. Pittman.”

8. A Unique Beach Barbecue Dining Experience

Something new to my cruising experiences happened on the Windstar Star Legend . It was supposed to be two things, but one got postponed and then canceled due to inclement weather. But, the one that did take place was incredible, and I think you will agree.

In a port where we had to tender (take small boats) to the shore, Windstar set up a beach barbecue for all of its guests to enjoy for lunch. Virgin Gorda was the perfect setting for the festive tables, steel-drum musicians, paella and bbq meats buffet, and tropical backdrop. The amount of effort that went into shuttling all things necessary (plates, glassware, utensils, food, beverages, linens, etc.) to the shore for us to have a memorable lunch honestly brings tears to my eyes. What a fantastic brand and staff that braves, in our case, extreme waves and weather conditions for a quick dining experience that creates such a heartwarming memory. It was well-appreciated.

Windstar, if you made that macaroni and cheese because I mentioned it, thank you. They canceled the deck barbecue mentioned above due to the weather, but I heard from repeat passengers that this is one of their favorite Windstar offerings.

Pro Tip: I like to bring a few cards from home and leave a tip for my favorite cruise staff, along with a personalized message to thank them for enriching my vacation.
