Trollers, not Trawlers

George first looked at the the fishing trawlers, the net-hauling bulldozers of the sea, discounting their bulkiness in favor of another salmon fishing boat, the troller. Trollers, on the otherhand, have more efficient hulls and use fuel more efficiency. That’s because they need to cover more water looking for fish without nets, using instead, hooks and lines trailing aft (troller fishermen supply most of the salmon to restaurant and supermarket distributors, because their fish are not scarred by net marks). As a side note, the Diesel Duck experiences a misnomer of sorts even today, as they are placed in the “Trawler” class.

Capturing the Character of the Pacific Northwest

Trollers meet the same criteria as a cruising boat. The vessile must be safe, comfortable for at least two people, and be able to cruise long distances over choppy not-so-friendly waters at times. So George just designed a sort of overweight steel hull troller, a diesel yacht under 40-feet with livable space and a pilothouse that captured the the pilothouse character of NW salmon boats. The Diesel Duck, was finally born. It’s an image of Northwest ruggedness, spirit and efficiency, all rolled into one beautiful boat.

The China Connection

The boats are now mostly built by Seahorse Marine in China. The economic advantage is obvious: incredible savings, with excellent workmanship. For the yacht owner, it’s like a new sighting. Diesel Duck 462 is a George Buehler designed Diesel Duck.  Manufactured by the Seahorse Marine yard in Zhuhai, China, she is a steel-hull long-range, sail-assisted passage maker.

The Diesel Duck 462 can travel shorthanded and safely anywhere in the world including extreme ice latitudes.

Some important distinctions that set the Diesel Duck 462 apart from other trawlers are:

• The steel hull with 2,000 gallons of fuel carried in steel tanks lining the bottom give the Diesel Duck a double steel bottom.
• There are four watertight bulkheads.
• The narrow hard chine hull will full lead-filled, sailboat-type keel design, is extremely powerful through the water and incredibly stable both at anchor and underway.
• The Diesel Duck is designed to be self-righting, coming back onto her lines in the unlikely event of a roll over.
• She is very easy to handle when docking.  You can operate from the pilothouse or flybridge with excellent visibility and have incredible maneuverability using the wireless remote to run the bow and stern thrusters.

Her sailing rig with spars and outriggers serves three key functions:

• The sails provide stabilization while under power reducing fuel consumption while motorsailing.
• The sails plan serves as a “get home” package if you have an issue with your main engine.
• The paravane outriggers provide stabilization underway and at rest.

The teak decks are surrounded by high bulwarks and tall stainless-steel railings. You can walk all round the deck, and you are very high off the water.  The swim platform has a grid extension that previously supported a SeaDoo jet ski.  This grid extension makes and excellent water sports platform that is ideal for SCUBA diving and other activities. The ships tender is supported by stainless steel davits off the transom and launched by a hydraulic, electric crane.

The upper aft deck, cockpit (fiberglass) is comfortably upholstered and has a Sunbrella sun shade with stainless frame above. There is an insert cushion to allow for sleeping outside on a balmy night.

Up forward on deck is a proper ground tackle arrangement with two anchors ready to deploy. An all chain rode and oversized 70kg Rocna type anchor along with a robust steel anchoring pulpit with large bollards to affix the snubber enable you to safely anchor in the most sever conditions.

From the cockpit, you can go up to the flybridge which has a Stidd helm chair and an L-shaped settee. The flybridge is fiberglass construction to reduce weight and keep the center of gravity down.  With the Echopilot forward scanning sonar and the ability for the Captain to look down directly in front of the boat from this position aloft, you can safely enter any remote anchorage.  The navigation and communications instrumentation and machinery controls, including bow and stern thruster makes anchoring and docking in any type of situation much easier to handle shorthanded.

The pilothouse is entered from the aft cockpit or from the starboard side deck.  There is excellent visibility in all directions with large windows (opening on sides and aft).  The forward pilothouse center window features a high-speed Clearview rotating window to disperse water.  The pilothouse has a chart table with drawers and lockers aft to port. To starboard is a long U-shaped settee with a table, ideal for dining and the settee doubles as a long single berth.   The nav/com is primarily Raymarine and there is a Maretron monitoring system.

Descending a flight of 5 steps you pass the ships electrical panel to starboard and arrive in the saloon.  There is a long settee to starboard, fronted by a moveable table and there are two custom chairs to port.  There are opening portlights and the signature butterfly hatch in the forward overhead. The saloon includes a Dickinson diesel furnace. In keeping with the efficiency theme of this trawler, the furnace will heat the entire interior with minimal energy required, needing only a small electrical draw to power the small 24V fan.

Forward to port is the wet head (toilet and shower) directly across from the separate clothes washer and dryer.  Completing the saloon is a large flat screen television is mounted on the forward starboard bulkhead.

The guest stateroom is forward with two bunk beds outboard to starboard.

Working aft of the saloon along the port side is the galley.  The galley has a double basin sink, propane stove and over, microwave oven and storage.

The aft master stateroom has an oversized, Queen walk around bed.  There are seven opening port lights and an overhead hatch which combine to provide excellent light and ventilation. The room master head has a separate stall shower.

For long distance cruising, you have the best of both worlds…you can go sailing or power cruise and the owner often prefers to do both!  When motorsailing, the sail plan provides inherent stability, softening the ride in a big seaway and, of course, the sailing rig doubles as a natural “get home” package should you have an interruption of your main engine.  The paravane outrigger system is easily deployed. This mechanical and reliable package reduces side to side rolling both at rest and underway.

For powering,  Diesel Duck 462 has 2,000 gallons of diesel available to the reliable John Deere main engine which translates to a 6,000 – 8,000-mile non-stop cruising range (depending upon sea conditions). She will cruise comfortably at 6 knots, sipping fuel at a miserly rate for days on end.

If you desire to cross oceans and are looking at fiberglass production boats like the Kadey-Krogen 48/52 or Nordhavn 47/52 you deserve to take a closer look at a  Diesel Duck 462 .  There are a lot of well-built and more famous fiberglass trawlers, but many look alike and are hard to distinguish.  The Diesel Duck designs are distinctive and benefit underway in any sea conditions from their heavy steel construction.

Muscovy Ducks are domesticated in Europe but were discovered in Brazil. The Muscovy ducks, also known as Cairina Moscato, are the only domestic ducks that are not descended from the mallard.

MUSCOVY EGGS

At Shirlock Acres, we incubate and hatch our own Muscovy eggs. Our Muscovy ducklings are fast-growing, growing to 12 pounds in 12 weeks. The male domestic Muscovy duck, also known as a Muscovy drake, grows up to 15 pounds, making it nearly twice the size of the white Muscovy hens. Our Muscovy ducklings will start laying eggs when they’re about six months (25 weeks) old. They will continue to lay their eggs for three years or even longer if they’re well cared for and fed a rich-protein diet. When the Muscovies are laying their eggs, keeping a distance from them is best because they become very protective.

MUSCOVY FARM

If you want to grow your domestic Muscovy duck and have a family of Muscovies, the best property is no smaller than one-quarter acre. Muscovy ducks are social animals, so they require bigger spaces. This will help them feel less stressed and enhance their relationships with other ducks. It will also help increase the production of their eggs and prevent them from bad habits such as plucking their feathers.

DOMESTIC MUSCOVY AS MEAT

Cairina Moschatas are a great source of meat. Their meat is 98% fat-free, so it is less greasy than other duck meat. Dark Muscovy meat is lean, tender, and has lots of flavors. It has 50% more breasts than other ducks and the highest yield of any duck. The meat also has fewer calories per pound than a turkey. Serve this juicy and tender meat with any meal you prefer, and enjoy the flavorful Muscovy.

DOMESTIC MUSCOVY AS PETS

Muscovy ducks are also great for pets and companionship. If raised from the duckling stage, they can become domestic Muscovy ducks. They are easy to care for and require no more than a great dry environment with regular food and water. Muscovy ducks are friendly; sometimes they even try to “talk” to you when they want a treat. And when they are happy to see you, they wag their tails. In addition, Muscovy ducks do not quack; they are quieter than other ducks. The male drake hisses while the female Muscovy has a quiet trilling coo.

Beware of the claws on their feet, which can be dangerous.
