In photos: Roberto Cavalli’s new superyacht Freedom revealed

Captured underway, it's easy to see how fashion designer Roberto Cavalli's new superyacht Freedom was inspired by Batman. Since the sale of the 28 metre CCN custom yacht was first announced in May 2017, details have been thin on the ground. But now never-before-seen photos reveal the  Tommaso Spadolini -designed interior for the first time, from the sky-blue galley, to the leopard-print furnishings. It's not hard to see how the boat was a finalist in the Best Exterior Styling and Best General Arrangement categories at the 2019 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards .

From the bow

Cavalli's brief called for an unusual and innovative design, resulting in aggressive lines, low on the water with plenty of volume despite its limited length. The layout includes a large garage at the bow, where a 3.8 metre tender can be stored.

The master cabin

“Everybody knows me for my animal prints – leopard and zebra. In this boat, our bedroom is covered in leopard print,” Cavalli told Boat International . The master is also equipped with direct access to the wheelhouse, as Cavalli intends to drive the yacht himself, as well as access to the lounge/beach area and a small flybridge deck.

The interior decor was personally created by Cavalli, who selected fabric and leather finishes, as well as furniture and accessories, to reflect his approach to life at sea and his strong personality.

A guest cabin

At the start of the design process, Cavalli wanted just one cabin and already knew the boat had to be painted black. The inspiration was the Dark Avenger; he envisioned a boat Batman would want to have. However he ended up inserting two guest cabins on the lower deck, one twin and one VIP cabin. They are located on either side of the corridor aft of the galley.

The unusual layout sees the full beam galley with dining space sit on the lower deck. Cavalli loves to cook himself, so the galley has been made intentionally spacious, with plentiful counter space and a good sound system.

The first dining area

Freedom is equipped with two dining areas.

The second dining area

The outdoor dining space id protected by the wind, flanked by two large glass doors etched with the Cavalli logo. It is designed for sea views, comfort and protection from the element. "Outside we have a white couch with leopard print pillows," Cavalli previously told  Boat International .

The wheelhouse has direct access to the master cabin on the main deck to allow Cavalli to drive Freedom when he feels like it. There are also doors to sidedeck and direct access to the crew quarters, which are forward on the lower deck and 160-degree visibility.

The engines

Equipped with three waterjets, Freedom reached a top speed of 43.5 knots on technical sea trials, perfect for Cavalli who likes nothing better than to overtake other boats.

A City at Sea: New Mega-Yacht Concept Resembles the Streets of Monaco

A sovereign city-state located in the French Riviera, Monaco is known as a “billionaire’s playground” for its lavish lifestyle, beautiful architecture, high-end casinos, and love for its famous annual street circuit race, The Monaco Grand Prix. The city also draws thousands of tourists every year, looking to soak in the stunning Mediterranean views and take a yacht ride through one of its many gorgeous harbors. Recently, Yacht Island Design , a boating design firm known for its out-of-this-world yacht concepts, has taken on a new project inspired by this French paradise’s luxury appeal, and there’s no other idea quite like it on the market today.

The Streets of Monaco is a 508-foot-long superyacht concept that has all the amenities of this beloved French province, wrapped into one over-the-top vessel. If built, it can house up to 16 guests and a crew of 70 to ensure a top-notch, individualized service experience for everyone onboard—all while cruising at a comfortable 15 mph at sea. What distinguishes this boat design from the rest, however, isn’t just its Mediterranean-style façade or its impressive size. The Streets of Monaco will deliver just what its name suggests—all the comforts and beauty of Monaco, including an onboard casino, racetrack, and stylized interiors that mimic the city’s iconic surroundings.

High Life on the High Seas

When it goes into production, this imposing yacht will be from top to bottom an homage to the sumptuous beauty of Monaco. All of the must-see landmarks have been integrated into the boat’s clever design. Rooms inspired by everything from the Hotel de Paris to Lowes Hotel to the Monte Carlo Casino can be found throughout the vessel’s sprawling interior, and the Grand Atrium and Oasis areas offer airy foyer-like spaces that center the vessel’s living space and make passengers feel as though they never left land. The boat’s four decks contain a variety of living areas, each with Monaco-inspired interior designs, with lavish colors and ornate decorations that offer a slice of paradise and amazing ambience while away at sea.

The deck of the ship is home to several sparkling swimming pools, overlooking the high seas, and of course, what over-the-top yacht wouldn’t come equipped with a helipad and a tennis court? Perhaps The Streets of Monaco’s most innovative concept, though, is its indoor racetrack, which allows up to three passengers to get out their checkered flags, hop in a go-kart, and race each other to their heart’s content. The boat’s exterior also reflects the towering roadways of Monaco, with its white colonnades, soaring arches, and castle-like structures. Inside, passengers can also ascend from the pool area via a marble staircase up to the ship’s spa area, where everyone onboard can melt their cares away with a massage or time in the sauna. This yacht concept—a marvel of modern engineering—is for owners who want to turn heads, and spark imaginations, while sailing into any harbor.

A Billion Dollar Investment

The Streets of Monaco may look like an extension of this celebrated French province adrift at sea, but its staggering price tag is also reflective of the high-end residents and clientele who live there. At a staggering one billion dollar estimated production cost, this superyacht is only for the most well-to-do investors, who want to spend some serious time away from the cares of land-living and get lost at sea—if only for a while. Purchasing this yacht is like buying a floating estate, however, offering a dance hall, thousands of square feet of cozy living space, and sundecks with private jacuzzis, among other things. Canadian billionaires Michael Lee-Chin, who is also Jamaican, and Lawrence Stroll are leading the way with their massive superyachts arriving in Monaco ahead of the Formula One Grand Prix.

Topping the list of largest superyachts is the 377-foot Ahpo, reportedly owned by Lee-Chin. The investor’s net worth is around $1.8 billion, Forbes reported .

The yacht, designed by Nuvolari Lenard studio, is said to have six decks, a full gym, beauty salon, spa, swimming pool, jacuzzi, dance floor and movie theatre, according to the publication autoevolution .

Coming in second place at 317 feet long is the Faith, owned by Canadian fashion entrepreneur Lawrence Stroll, whose son Lance drives for the Aston Martin F1 team. Lawrence Stroll’s net worth is $2.9 billion, Forbes reported .

The yacht came with a US$200 million price tag. It can host up to 18 guests and has nine staterooms, according to Yacht Bible . It has indoor and outdoor fireplaces in the private owner’s deck, a movie theatre, gym, a wine cellar and a wellness area.

The nearly 100-year-old annual race is expected to see some showers over the next couple of days, though it’s not expected to deter the floating party scene. More than 80 super yachts, at a combined length of 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles), are already clustered off the tiny city-state in the French Riviera, with more likely en route.

The superyacht world was thrown into turmoil following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions placed on billionaire Russian oligarchs.

More than a dozen yachts worth over US$2.25 billion have already been seized. The seizures have sent the luxury vessels racing across oceans to locales that aren’t as likely to impose or enforce sanctions. Some have logged more than 5,000 nautical miles since the start of the invasion in February.

One of the biggest superyachts, Eclipse, owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abromavich, is 533 feet and would have towered over Lee-Chin’s vessel; however, it was notably absent in Monaco.

One of the first yachts seized, Dilbar , owned by another Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, would have also towered over the other vessels in Monaco, at 512 feet. It was impounded by German authorities while it was undergoing repairs, Page Six reported in March. Since then, other yachts and even private jets owned by Russians with connections to President Vladimir Putin have been seized.

The absence of Russian superyachts pushed the two Canadians into the lead for largest yacht — although the country with the most was Greece, closely followed by the United States and France. Russia did not make Bloomberg’s superyacht leaderboard .

T he largest of the yachts in Monaco’s harbour were worth more than the annual GDP of some small island states. But few of the customers touring their decks seemed to care that buying the former would help drown the latter. “I don’t think about this yet,” said Elena Papernaya, an artist who had set her eyes on a mid-sized yacht, when asked if she worried about the damage it would do to the climate.

Kasper Hojgaard, a regional manager for an industrial company who charters yachts for a few weeks each year, said he did not consider climate change “at all” when doing so. His friend Lasse Jensen, a pension fund manager, nodded in agreement. “We are beginning to look a bit more into it, but it’s not playing a role.”

The Monaco yacht show is one of the greatest concentrations of wealth in the world. The event, which calls itself “the ultimate gathering of maritime luxury”, takes place in a tax haven where two in three residents are millionaires. When the Guardian visited in late September, the port was filled with more than 100 superyachts, some of which boasted submersibles and swimming pools. Visitors could book airport transfers in private jets and helicopters.

The true cost of such luxury is paid for, in part, by the rest of society. The top 10% of earners in the EU emit 24.5 times as much planet-heating CO 2 through their transport as the bottom 10% do, according to new data from the International Energy Agency . At the extreme end of the spectrum, the carbon footprints of the ultra-rich are inflated by giant yachts, private jets and sports cars with engines that burn barrels of oil.

“There is no other way,” said Christian Largura, an Instagram star and founder of a luxury retail site who was about to buy a superyacht that runs on diesel. “For sure, if it’s possible, you take the green one … [but] if you want a big one, there is nothing fully electric.”

Billionaires’ consumption emissions run to thousands of tonnes a year, with transport, including private jets and yachts, by far the biggest contributor, according to Oxfam’s new report on carbon inequality . And transport, especially car use, is a major factor in the disproportionately high emissions of the richest 10% too, with these emissions 20-40 times higher than among the poorest 10% in major nations and blocs including the EU, according to the IEA.

A superyacht, or even a medium-sized motor yacht, is the most polluting single object a person can own. There are no reliable estimates of how much carbon the world’s 6,000 superyachts pump into the atmosphere but one study of billionaires’ footprints found yachts were the single biggest contributor, ahead of private jets.

“Even a mansion on a private island has less impact because it is at least stuck in one place,” said Richard Wilk, of the Open Anthropology Institute, who co-wrote the study.

In interviews with 50 visitors to the Monaco yacht show – from brokers and buyers to suppliers and sellers – yacht enthusiasts painted a picture of an industry taking small steps to clean up amid growing public pressure. But only a handful of owners and customers who spoke to the Guardian said they were troubled by the disproportionate emissions their boats spewed today.

“You know that it’s something to worry about, but then again there are so many problems that we cannot fix,” said Giorgia Covolio, whose husband owns a yacht. “If I cannot solve it myself then I cannot stress too much about it.”

Jennifer Rodriguez, a friend, agreed. “If Bill Gates doesn’t stress about it, or Leonardo DiCaprio, then we won’t stress about it.”

While a small sailing ship may emit little more carbon than that required to build it and break it down, big motor boats burn vast amounts of fuel to cross seas and run power-hungry services such as air conditioning and desalination. According to a presentation by the industry group Water Revolution Foundation, the global yacht fleet spends a quarter of its energy on propulsion and three-quarters on “hotel load”. Some superyachts guzzle fuel even when docked because their crews live onboard all year round.

“The trend in yacht size goes towards bigger, bigger and bigger,” said Lina Odhe, of SF Marina, a company that supplies to increasingly crowded marinas. The industry had moved “from superyachts to megayachts to gigayachts”.

The course that yachtmakers are charting is similar to one that the auto industry has navigated for several years. Carmakers have flooded the market with bulkier vehicles at such speed – and consumers have snapped them up so fast – that nearly half of cars sold last year were SUVs, according to the IEA. Experts put part of the success down to marketing campaigns that appeal to a desire for status and power.

By the dazzling waters of Monaco’s Port Hercules, surrounded by multistorey ships and smooth-talking sales teams, most yacht owners and buyers approached by the Guardian declined to comment on their carbon footprints. Those who agreed to did so mostly on the condition of anonymity.

One owner verbally abused and physically threatened the reporter during a half-hour interview. Two potential buyers denied the scientific consensus that humans have heated the planet by burning fossil fuels.

Several attenders used identical arguments to those from regular rich people defending habits such as flying on holiday or driving an SUV. Some said their carbon footprints were not as big as those of even richer people. Others pointed to sources of pollution that were bigger in absolute terms, such as cargo ships, factories and multinational corporations.

A handful of owners said they were aware of their own carbon footprints and frustrated at how little others had done to shrink theirs. “It’s one of the most unsustainable industries in the world, there’s no doubt about it,” said Frederik, a sustainability student from a yacht-owning family, gesturing at the port with a flute of champagne. “You’ve got here maybe three boats in total that are really trying to reduce their impact on the environment.”

He said his family had shrunk their yacht fleet down to two big boats, put solar panels and electric batteries on them and stopped dropping heavy anchors in areas with fragile seagrass that suck up carbon. “You need to make sure you’re having less of an impact every time that you use it.”

Jonathan, a friend working in luxury management, said he understood criticism of the industry but he distinguished between people who bought big yachts to show off and those who wanted to spend private time with their families. He paused before adding: “The most valuable moments I’ve had were on the boat.”

The yacht industry has started to pay more attention to the environment. This year’s Monaco yacht show featured a catamaran covered in solar panels and boasted a “sustainability hub” for the second year in a row. Among the stalls were companies trying to power yachts with electricity and methanol instead of fossil fuels, as well as some trying to increase the efficiency of engines and hulls.

Javier Navarro, a broker with Zarpo Yachts, said the average age of a yacht owner had fallen to 42, and the younger generation of owners were more concerned about climate change. At the same time, advances in clean technologies in other sectors – such as car batteries getting smaller and cheaper – had made it feasible to electrify small yachts. “They are taking a lot of innovations from the car industry into the boating sector,” he said.

Some visitors were sceptical of the green marketing and the buyers nodding along to it. One crew member on a charter yacht said clients on her ship sometimes asked if the water they served came from plastic bottles, but did not mind spending weeks on a boat that guzzles fossil fuels. “I guess it’s nice to try to do what you can with the little things,” she said. “But really they’re scratching the surface.”

The total emissions from the yacht industry are probably a fraction of the overall shipping industry’s, experts say, but are caused by a far smaller group of people pursuing what is almost exclusively a leisure activity. And social scientists warn that the carbon footprints of the super-rich go beyond their raw emissions. Many people aspire to their lifestyles, particularly when glamorised in social media posts, and their emissions are often used by those with smaller footprints to justify polluting habits.

A junior associate at a law firm who lives in Monaco and was not attending the yacht show told the Guardian that the thought of such inequality frustrated her. “We make all these efforts in our own lives but when you see that” – she broke off and pulled a face at a row of superyachts hosting parties behind her – “well, it’s completely delirious.”
