• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

Comfort Ratio

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Taylor 40 is about 239 kg/cm, alternatively 1342 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 239 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1342 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

She has been under fabulous ownership ever since. Encompassing beauty and speed, she is an ideal candidate for anyone wishing to do some fierce racing both offshore and around the buoys.

TEMPTRESS, is a force to be reckoned with. This Taylor 41, was designed by Jim Taylor Yacht Designs, built by Mark Lindsey Boatbuilders in Gloucester, MA and commissioned in 1993. She has been under fabulous ownership ever since. Encompassing beauty and speed, she is an ideal candidate for anyone wishing to do some fierce racing both offshore and around the buoys. She has a full sized v-berth forward, for ample cruising berth space which can be removed to create a space for racing sail storage.

In her lifetime, TEMPTRESS has participated (and succeeded) in seven Newport to Bermuda races and is entered to race in 2020. She won her class in 2004 and more recently, earned second in her class in 2018. TEMPTRESS has fully measured rating certificates and is competitive under ORR, ORC, IRC, PHRF NB, PHRF NE, and OSC.

There are upper and lower pipe berths on both port and starboard aft of the companion way with a storage box with great accessibility on centerline. On the starboard side is the navigation and chart table with the seat facing forward. There is storage under the seat, a fold up desk top for storage and three deep drawers located under the table. On port side is the oven and icebox and the galley sink located under the companionway stairs. Forward of the nav station and galley is another set of upper and lower berths on both port and starboard. The upper berths can be folded down to make settees on both sides. There is a fold up/down dining table and storage for the table on the forward bulkhead wall. Moving forward on port side is the head and to starboard of the head entrance is a seat (with storage beneath) and a line storage locker. Forward is a full sized v-berth with cushions which can be removed for ample racing sail storage. Cabin portlights throughout boat were replaced in 2017 all hatches were replaced in 2019 and the cabin sole floorboards throughout cabin were stripped and fully refinished/re-varnished (Spring 2019).

The Hull is to consist of unidirectional and biaxial ‘S-Glass’ skins over cores of H-80 ‘Divinycell’ PVC foam and AL-600 ‘Baltek’ balsa above the waterline and H-80 and ‘Airex’ PVC below. There are high concentrations of unidirectional ‘S-Glass’ (in lieu of carbon fiber, currently outlawed for IMS) along the hull backbone and bilge stringers. An integrated gridwork of deep keel floors, partial bulkheads, longitudinals and ring frames supports the

rig and keel loads, controls headstay tension, and prevents shell distortion.

The Deck is a similar laminate of ‘S-Glass’ skins over the same Divinycell foam and Balsa cores used in the Hull, with high density foam core and additional laminate in way of all deck hardware. Unidirectional ‘S-Glass’ reinforcements are carefully oriented to resist the heavy compression loads imposed on the deck by the headstay, backstay and mast. Methodical weight control is a high priority, and all moldings and components are carefully

weighed before assembly.

This design is a development of the TAYLOR 42, which won her IMS Class at Block Island for three years in a row.

Design Comments:

The hull and deck are constructed with the cold molded wood/epoxy technique for which Brooklin Boatyard is justifiably famous. The hull features tongue and groove Alaskan cedar planking each side of diagonal western red cedar veneers, and the deck boasts a handsome and traditional teak overlay. The stem, keelson, and ring frames are laminated Alaskan cedar. The keel loads are supported and distributed by a grid of laminated keel floors that are capped with unidirectional carbon fiber. Cold molded wood construction not only results in high strength and toughness relative to weight, but it also provides very impressive acoustic and thermal insulation. The interior is finished in a classic ‘Herreshoff’ style, with off-white painted surfaces trimmed with brightwork highlights that are a Brooklin Boatyard trademark.

Review: Marisa Abela gives her all to capturing Amy Winehouse's life in 'Back to Black'

There are many things wrong with this sanitized biopic of Amy Winehouse.

There are many things wrong with this sanitized biopic of the uncensored British wild child of song that was Amy Winehouse. But the things that go right with "Back to Black," now in theaters, start with Marisa Abela, who gives her blazing all to capturing Winehouse's short, turbulent life (she died in 2011 of alcohol poisoning) with stunning ferocity and feeling.

Since Winehouse's voice was an amalgam of her distinctive influences, mostly of Black singers such as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Lauryn Hill, detractors feel that Abela should have lip-synched to Winehouse's vocals instead of doing it herself. Let's agree to disagree. The immediacy of Abela's vocals catches the essence of Winehouse's style that fused soul, jazz, funk, blues and R &B.

One sticking point: This movie about an alternately frisky and fragile angel of music needed way more music. Luckily, you can hear Winehouse in your head even as the movie trudges along until Winehouse joins the tragic 27 Club of rockers (Joplin, Hendrix, Morrison, Cobain) who died at 27.

The film begins with Winehouse's formative years, stepping up at the piano with her estranged parents Mitch (Eddie Marsan) and Janis (Juliet Cowan), along with gran Cynthia (the great Lesley Manville), to sing Yiddish songs around the piano. That's before Winehouse meets the hottie love of her life, Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O'Connell), sparking her addiction to drugs and to him.

If you saw "Amy," Asif Kapadia's Oscar-winning, gloves-off 2015 doc about the house of Winehouse, "Back to Black" will play like a ludicrous fairytale. Kapadia is hard on Winehouse's cab driver dad for pushing his daughter to overwork and telling her not to enter rehab, which inspired one of her hit songs. And Kapadia nails Winehouse's eventual husband Fielder-Civil as a shameless opportunist.

'Hillbilly Elegy review: A missed opportunity featuring a 'sensational' Glenn Close

Whether or not the Winehouse family had approval on "Back to Black," both men are handled far more sympathetically in the script by Matt Greenhalgh. Maybe director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who tenderized the early years of John Lennon in "Nowhere Boy," wanted to paint a portrait of Winehouse untainted by her tabloid notoriety. You be the judge.

Taylor-Johnson, who also directed "Fifty Shades of Gray," puts real sizzle into the first meeting between Winehouse and Fielder-Civil as these tattooed babies flirt over a pool game. Fielder-Civil pretends he doesn't know who Winehouse is. Later he takes credit for introducing Winehouse to "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las, doing a singalong dance to the '60s hit that will strongly influence her sound.

Sexual attraction is a difficult thing to fake on screen. But Abela and O'Connell make you feel the heat. O'Connell exudes the swaggering bad-boy charisma that turns on Winehouse. And Abela returns the favor with a come-on carnality that singes the screen. Previously best known as the scheming financial wizard on TV's "Industry," Abela is now officially a star.

The musical connection between the two continues when Winehouse records her second and final album, "Back to Black," a popular and artistic triumph based on how Winehouse feels about Fielder-Civil, even as their drug-codependency poisons the well of any possible future.

Music was the one thing that carried Winehouse through until she lost her war with drugs. Abela's knockout take on Winehouse singing "Rehab" live on the night she won a Grammy is a thrilling moment this curiously flat movie could have used way more of.

Still, even the film's shortcomings can't dim Abela's starshine. The look, the strut, the soul of Winehouse are all there in her marvel of a portrayal. Abela gets so far under Winehouse's skin that you feel at times that they are breathing as one.

In these moments, you can almost forget how often this botch of a biopic buries itself in a tragic trajectory of drug-related cliches. Abela deserved better. So does Winehouse. And so do audiences.

Olivia Rodrigo handled a disastrous wardrobe malfunction like a pro ... not missing a beat as her top came undone during her London concert, and keeping the damn thing in place.

The singer took the stage at The O2 Arena Tuesday as part of her world tour -- and during a vigorous performance of her hit, "Love Is Embarrassing" ... Olivia's upper-body garment broke open ... forcing the former Disney Channel star to hold it in place.

Still, Olivia kept it together ... continuing on with the performance while motioning to her nearby dancer to fix the busted bustier. While they weren't able to get it fixed on the spot, Olivia didn't cut the song early ... only venturing offstage for help once the track wrapped.

In other words ... she powered through the song with her top loose, which is impressive.

Olivia has yet to address the onstage hiccup ... but we're sure she isn't sweating it, especially since fans are applauding her for her professionalism.

Perhaps a costume shakeup is in order before Olivia takes the stage again ... she has 3 more dates in London before a break ahead of her concerts in Belgium -- and if she can figure out what's wrong with her wardrobe, that'd certainly help avoid this down the road.

Otherwise ... hold on tight??? 😅

2024 PGA Championship pool picks: Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris among the picks at Valhalla

The top golfers from both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will tee off on Thursday in the second major championship of 2024, the PGA Championship . Red-hot Scottie Scheffler is the favorite, but Rory McIlroy is a close second after winning the Wells Fargo Championship.

Scheffler won this year’s first major, holding off a strong challenge from tour phenom Ludvig Åberg. But McIlroy has won this tournament at this venue, albeit 10 years ago.

While eyes will be on Scheffler and McIlroy, there are several other value picks for your PGA Championship pool. Here’s how it works: One player is selected one player from each tier of 10 inside the Official World Golf Rankings top 50 as well as a wild card ranked outside the top 50.

Tier 1 (1-10) | Rory McIlroy

One win was a team event (the Zurich Classic of New Orleans), but McIlroy is coming off back-to-back wins, the latest being this past weekend’s Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy shot 6-under, including two eagles on the back nine in the final round as he pulled away from Xander Schauffele to cruise to victory in Charlotte.

That last time the PGA Championship was held at Valhalla Golf Club, McIlroy was victorious and was coming off wins in his previous two tournaments. Granted that was 10 years ago and the Jack Nicklaus-designed course has made some changes since. But McIlroy is playing good golf right now.

He currently ranks second on tour in driving distance, averaging 316.8 yards per drive. That club has been his strongest weapon all season as he only trails OWGR’s No. 1 player Scottie Scheffler in true strokes gained off the tee on the PGA Tour this year.

But since the Masters, he ranks second only to Scheffler in total true strokes gained at +3.35. He’s picked up the ninth most strokes of any tour player around the green. That’s a winning formula for any golfer.

With Valhalla’s firmer fairways, McIlroy’s drives could carry leaving the world No. 2-ranked player with some comfortable approaches and chances to pick up birdies.

Tier 2 (11-20) | Collin Morikawa

Something clicked for Collin Morikawa at the Masters and he’s been on a tear since. He ranks fifth in total true strokes gained (+2.57) since his teeing off at Augusta.

He ranked 60th among players in the PGA Championship field in total true strokes gained prior to the first major at +.75.

The key to his improvement has been with the putter. Morikawa switched to a Mallet putter ahead of the second round at Augusta and has gained .94 true strokes since. Before the switch, he was losing .43 true strokes on the green.

Morikawa was already gaining strokes with his other clubs this season and had been particularly accurate off the tee, hitting 345 out of 438 possible fairways (78.77 percent), ranking second among tour players.

Tier 3 (21-30) | Will Zalatoris

Zalatoris plays well in majors. In his 11 starts at majors, he’s finished in the top 10 eight times and been a runner-up three times.

The majors version of Zalatoris has also shown up for signature events this season. He finished tied for second at The Genesis Invitational and tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer.

Since he turned pro in 2018, Zalatoris ranks second in total true strokes gained (2.64) in majors among the players who’ve played at least as many rounds as he has (37) in the PGA Championship field.

Tier 4 (31-40) | Byeong Hun An

An is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. He’s played in 13 events this year and finished in the top 25 eight times with five top-10 finishes. His most recent was a third-place finish in the Wells Fargo Championship this past week.

He’s gained strokes off the tee this season and has averaged 313.5 yards a drive, the fourth-most among PGA Tour players and fifth-most among the PGA Championship field.

His tee shots impact his scoring as An averages 4.81 birdies per round, the second most on the PGA Tour.

An’s strengths should bode well for him at Valhalla particularly if the course conditions remain favorable.

Tier 5 (41-30) | Si Woo Kim

Kim moved up three spots to No. 41 in the OWGR rankings after scoring his ninth top-25 finish of the year at the Wells Fargo Championship. Kim hasn’t missed a cut this season and statistically has been one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour this season.

His problem has been putting. He ranks 105th among the PGA Championship field in true strokes gained putting, whereas he ranks 10th off the tee and 17th on approach.

Even with the poor putting this season, Kim has the fifth-best scoring average on tour (69.18).

If he’s able to give himself some easy putts, he could play his way into contention. He just needs to finish them.

Rest of the field | Cameron Smith

Since joining LIV Golf in 2022, Smith has finished in the top 10 in three of his five majors appearances including a tie for sixth at the Masters in April. At the Masters, he excelled at gaining strokes around the green and putting.

Smith has won a major before (the 2022 Open Championship), and has kept himself in contention mostly since. He also heads into the PGA Championship coming off a runner-up finish at LIV Golf’s Singapore event.
