MANUFACTURING

Sailing range, power range.

Located in Cape Town, South Africa, Robertson and Caine currently manufacture 3 sailing catamarans and 3 power catamarans for the world markets. Ranging in size from 40-53ft.

We strive to be the benchmark for ocean cruising catamarans. Through innovative design, development of new materials and processes, handcrafted skills and strict quality standards.

R&C continues to position itself as a world-class manufacturer with the objective to deliver quality products throughout the world.

All of our boats are built in accordance with ISO standards and are certified by the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) in accordance with the Recreational Craft Directive 2013/53/EU. Additionally, our product is also certified by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) to ABYC standards. We are members of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).

With plants covering over 60 000 sqm, manufacturing a range of six models by a Team of 2000+ persons, Robertson and Caine is focused upon producing world-class catamarans of exceptional build quality. Adhering to sustainable and safe production practices.

Our design philosophy is integration simplified. We blend the ease of boat handling with effective boat speed, without compromising onboard comfort and functionality. Our inhouse design Teams in Tampa and Cape Town, constantly innovate form and function, producing award winning industry benchmark catamarans in power and sail.

Construction

To build for solid blue water performance, Robertson and Caine use superior materials, fit for purpose, with every step of the build process, adhering to global standards and subject to stringent quality control. Robertson and Caine catamarans dominate the charter fleets of The Mooring and Sunsail, thus are built to be reliable, with low maintenance.

The construction of these vessels incorporates various manufacturing processes such as Hand Laminating, Vacuum Infusion as well as Resin Transfer Moulding to build the required composite parts. For structural parts, multiaxial E-Glass is used in combination with PVC Foam Core within vacuum infusion processes to provide rigidity, impact resistant and buoyant vessels.

Isophthalic/Vinyl Ester resins and NPG gelcoats prevents the onset of hydrolysis. The strong hull laminate is light and durable resulting in a dynamic weight-carrying capacity and excellent motion reaction.

Manufacturing techniques such as vacuum infusion, RTM Light, air demoulding and full deck/hull infusion are used to build a lighter, sturdier product, with greater performance potential.

Each of our six models has their own dedicated production facilities from moulding to final assembly. These are served by a joinery manufacturing facility and a distribution centre. Three catamarans are launched weekly. The catamarans are then shipped globally, with the mast already stepped, through the Port of Cape Town on transport vessels.

5-axis CNC Machining

5-Axis machining involves using a CNC system to move the table/bed and cutting tool along five different axes simultaneously. This enables the machining of very complex parts, which is why 5-axis is especially popular for marine applications.

All the machining and milling is done on advanced styling and tooling base materials with precision robotic systems ensuring perfect accuracy each and every time.

Hand Built Plugs

After the assembly of CNC cut timber profiles, our skilled workforce effect the cladding of the plug. Each step of the process is closely monitored by a team of Composite Engineers and tooling experts.

The plug will then be polished to a class "A" finish and handed over for a final quality check and approval. At this stage, new moulds may be developed for production.

Deck & Hull Infusion

The resin-infused Deck & Hull laminate is strong, light and durable resulting in a dynamic weight-carrying capacity and excellent motion reaction.

High-density PVC foam cores are extensively used throughout all the resin-infused parts. The cores are all CNC cut and nested to precise dimensions as per the engineering drawings.

Advanced Fabrics

Multiaxial E-glass stitched fabrics ensure maximum strength and promote a very high calibre glass-to-resin ratios. These fabrics includes, but are not limited to, unidirectional, biaxial and quadraxial E-glass.

Collision Bulkheads

In case of hull damage, watertight collision bulkheads at bow and stern prevent water from entering the hull.

Internal Modules

Internal modules are assembled offline which in turn allows for ease of production as well as enhanced quality control, before final fitment.

NPG gelcoats and a Vinyl Ester resins are used for underwater applications to ensure a resin-rich E-glass barrier layer is achieved which improves resistance to hydrolysis and helps prevent osmosis.

Light Resin Transfer Moulding

Automated moulding processes are used to allow for repeatability at the same weight & quality every time.

At Robertson & Caine, we systematically evaluate the quality of our products at every manufacturing stage to ensure that quality standards are met.

Feedback from our charter partners and private owners is used to improve the design and reliability of our sailing and power yachts..

A growing boatbuilding industry ready for investment

South Africa has a long and rich maritime history, with decades upon decades of experience when it comes to marine manufacturing and boat building. Since 2014 the country has secured investments worth ZAR30 billion and created over 7000 direct jobs in the ocean’s economy. The investments have been mainly in infrastructure development, marine manufacturing, aquaculture, as well as the oil and gas sector.

As the oldest city in South Africa, Cape Town has a unique location. It’s situated at the southern tip of the African continent and is perfectly positioned on the South-South Trade Corridor i.e. linking Asia, Africa and the East Coast of the Americas. This in turn, also makes the Mother City a bustling port for merchant and commercial fleets, with several marine manufacturing, maintenance and repair companies that service local and international enterprises here.

In fact, Cape Town is the second-largest producer of recreational catamarans in the world, after France. Each year, 80 to 200 cruising yachts pass Cape Town from the Indian Ocean en-route to the Caribbean – a lucrative market waiting for enthusiastic investors. Best of all, one of the best ways to explore these opportunities is to attend the annual Cape Town International Boat Show .

In general, Capetonians are very involved with all aspects of sailing, boating, fishing and watersport activities. With an exquisite coastline and many intricate waterways, lakes and rivers, the Western Cape is a wealth of opportunity and knowledge. Enterprises here are generally also renowned for their good build quality and prices that are very attractive to those holding stronger international currencies.

This cost-efficiency, as well as the level of skill and service, has led to the boat-building industry reaching well over ZAR1 billion annually. This holds enormous growth potential for Cape Town’s economic landscape .

Not surprisingly, Cape Town’s shipyards have nurtured and built incredible international networks, even securing market penetration into the Caribbean, USA, Mediterranean and Asia. As a result, Cape Town’s boatbuilding exports have grown by ±20,5% year-on-year since 2014 (Quantec, 2019) and exports 80% of its produced items. This has ultimately attracted a positive trade balance of around US$73m annually.

Cape Town’s competitive boat-building capabilities

The Western Cape is the largest boat-building centre within South Africa, generating over ZAR2,3 billion in 2018 in exports revenue (Quantec, 2019), and housing approximately 45% of boat builders. In fact, ships, boats and floating structures were Cape Town’s 7th largest value export in 2018. Of course, it doesn’t end there.

Cape Town boasts South Africa’s only Boat-Building school

False Bay College has approximately 60 students graduating annually with a national certificate. Students here learn a wide range of disciplines including design, marine joinery, fibreglass or polymer composite fabrication, metalwork and welding, naval systems, computer-aided drawing (AutoCAD), as well as boat-building standards. Naturally, Cape Town companies generally do not have any skills shortages in these technical areas.

South African Boat Builders Export Council (SABBEX)

Several top boatbuilders from South Africa have exhibited at the annual Miami International Boat Show. In fact, Cape Town companies regularly showcase their boats and win awards at sector shows. This industry is currently supported by SABBEX, which often helps to facilitate investment and conduct research into investment and growth opportunities.

Skipper presumed dead after vessel capsizes en route to Cape Town

The skipper of the NINA POPE sailing vessel, which sank in the Atlantic Ocean while en route from Tristan da Cunha to Cape Town on Wednesday, is presumed dead, according to the SA Maritime Safety Authority.

It stated that in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town received an SOS Alert from the Garmin International Rescue Coordination Centre regarding the Swiss-flagged sailing vessel.

The alert indicated that the vessel was taking on water about 2400 kilometres west-southwest of Cape Town.

In a joint operation involving MRCC Uruguay and other international partners, a motor tanker was dispatched to the location.

Speaking to News24 , Samsa spokesperson Tebogo Ramatjie said that despite challenging conditions, with winds up to 74km/h and sea swells of up to eight meters, the FRONT POLLUX [motor tanker] managed to recover two male survivors from a life raft near the reported position.

The skipper, a German national, was unable to be rescued and is believed to have perished with the vessel.

One survivor is Brazilian, while the other has dual citizenship in the United States and Switzerland.

Ramatjie stated that they were unharmed, did not require medical attention, and were expected to arrive in Cape Town next week.

Samsa extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

‘SAMSA extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to all SAR partners, especially the crew of the FRONT POLLUX, for their valiant efforts in the rescue operation,’ it said.

Sailors en route to Cape Town plucked from life raft in deep-sea rescue

Ship diverted to pick up life raft.

Two sailors were rescued and one is presumed drowned after their yacht sank about 2,400km southwest of Cape Town this week, the South African Maritime Safety Authority has confirmed.

The sailors were rescued on Wednesday from a life raft after swift intervention by South Africa’s Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre which requested a passing ship, the FRONT POLLUX, to divert its course to the accident location. The yacht, NINA POPE, had been on its way to Cape Town from Tristan da Cunha, Samsa said on Friday.

“Despite challenging conditions, with winds up to 74km/h and sea swells of up to eight metres, the FRONT POLLUX managed to recover two male survivors from a life raft near the reported position,” it said. “Unfortunately, a third seafarer, the skipper of the NINA POPE and a German national, could not be saved and is presumed to have gone down with the vessel.

“The survivors, one with dual Swiss/US citizenship and the other Brazilian, have since communicated with their respective embassies in Cape Town, facilitated by the FRONT POLLUX. Both individuals did not require medical assistance and are currently en route to Cape Town. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) emergency operations centre (EOC) is assisting with their arrival early next week.”

Samsa commended the various stakeholders involved for a remote rescue under difficult circumstances.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.
