1988 hunter 26.5 sailboat review

For racing you’ll want to unload the grill & propane tank. It would also be handy to have another set of winches for the spinnaker, though the cockpit might get a touch crowded. What are the sails like?

Compare to an S2 7.9 for speed and sailing to rating, room down below, cockpit, but look the 7.9's over carefully - many are long in the tooth

SHNOOL

With a minimum of effort the Hunter 26.5 can be raced in mixed fleet racing well. I liked the layout of these boats as you mention. This boat won't require winches for the spinnaker if you put ratchet blocks behind the primaries. This will NOT compete head to head with an S2 7.9, but can outpace a 25.5, and the catalina 25 quite well. To beat its own rating you'll need to equip it with at least radial sails and you'll need to do acceptable symmetrical spin work. If you race JAM, this boat will mop up off wind, except DDW. Getting point out of the boat will require you to sail smarter, by feathering upwind. Check, because I don't believe they made anything other than the wing keel model. Because of the mounting location of the tiller, you must get crew outward earlier. These boats overpower early, and dig in, so they need to be flatter than you would think to get proper speed. A good analog knotmeter will be a requirement, or at least one that updates quickly. When I say little heel, I'd say anything under 10 degrees. We have had a local guy sail with our PA fleet, a 25.5 (smaller and slower than the 26.5) with inboard, who was VERY successful with the boat. He ran a cruising spinnaker, and radial sails. The boat kept speed with my Capri 25, with new sails off wind, where I killed him was upwind, and DDW. What is interesting is he swore the boat did well over on its ear, and he frequently sailed the boat past 20 degrees of heel. So maybe this negates my earlier argument, but he might have done better if he kept flatter. Either way I always liked the Hunter 26.5 for a sleeper PHRF boat. Just don't expect to compete with Js and such, but play the ratings game, and make sure you sail better than your own. If you want to go crazy strip the boat to the minimum gear for safety (no cushions), and find a way to get that outboard off the stern while racing.

Turns out it's a wing keel I ain't interested. I heard elsewhere boat liked heel and weight forward. Pull out all excess weight code 6 main put a bottom on it..........well, not this one.

chef2sail

Headroom cramped Fractional rig. PHRF 189 at best so slow to average Better ar light winds like most Hunters, especially those under 35 Probably can get at a good price and can serve as a family boat A racing boat it is not

The vessel is in good condition.. It comes with it's own stand. I purchased this vessel in 2008 and have used it in North Channel and surrounding waters. The boat is currently at the Drummond Island Yacht Haven.in Michigan.on it's stand. Specifications: LOA 26.5 Ft, LWL 22.5 ft, Beam 9 ft, Draft 3.6 ft, Displacement 4400 lbs, Ballast wing keel 1800 lbs, Mast hgt. 38.9ft, head room 5.6 ft, Equipment: Main sail 110% Genoa. Roller reefing jIb, storm Jib Danforth Anchor with anchor locker. Built in head with holding tank. Marine TV,TV antenna with rack for TV. AC system with 3 bank charger. Electric portable stove. Also alcohol stove, Microwave oven , stainless steel sink AC plugs throughout ship. DC lights throughout ship. Two 31 Batteries, DC voltage meter, AC circuit breakers DC circuit breakers, Ice chest, Built in boarding ladder. Horseshoe life ring. Life jackets . Electronics: 2 Lowrance HDS 8 inch chart plotters, HD Radar, depth sounder, wind instrument , Horizon fog and hailing instrument. External Speakers fore and aft. VFH radio, all accessible from cockpit. Surveyor told me rudder has a water problem common with this vessel. Each fall I drill holes in bottom of rudder, I have had no problem since. The survey on this Vessel was $12000. I have added: 2 chart plotters, a new compass, Radar, a second depth finder, 3 bank Charging system, an AC system, Hailer, Auto fog horn system, Wind gauge, Roller furling. new Jib, and TV and TV accessories. The new additions are well over $6000 I am using Navionic chips which covers all the Great Lakes and the North channel. I taught Navigation at School Craft College for many years. I feel this is the best chart system on the market as I have the capability of setting up a safe water mark on the chart. So all water 6 feet and deeper is colored white and water shallower is blue. Boat and stand are on Drummond Island. It is buyer's responsibility to pick up here. This boat has 2 chart plotters. If you want a lower price, I am willing to sell it with one chart plotter minus the radar. this price can be negotiated.

Model Passage 42

Category Cruiser Motorcycles

Length 42.0

1993 Hunter Passage 42 - PROTEUS Set up for serious off-shore passage making and fully self-sufficient off-the-grid cruising. Has recently (beginning 2014) sailed in England, the coast of Europe and the western Med (2015) and crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean (Nov 2015). Came up through the Caribbean (spring 2016). This yacht was never chartered, always privately owned, and meticulously cared for. All servicing and installations were done to a high standard. All safety equipment is up-to-date. The yacht participated in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) which requires a high standard of safety equipment, training, and inspections. The yacht has been certified as a Class-A offshore sailing yacht. All documentation is available and will be conveyed to future owner. The previous owners lived aboard, loved every minute of it, but are now moving back on land for a few years and do not want the boat to sit and atrophy. She needs to go to a good home and to someone who will continue the journey! She has taken care of her owners for years and will continue to do so for many years to come. S/V PROTEUS is "overbuilt" and designed for extended offshore passage-making and off-the-grid cruising. Just want to jump all the way down to the USVI instead of going the super-slow way all the way through the Bahamas? Okay. The previous owners just made a passage from the Dominican Republic straight to Ft.Lauderdale (March 2016). Seven days offshore? No problem. PROTEUS has a thicker hull, reinforced rigging, extra backstay (B&R rigs normally don't have them). Massive solar panels, watermaker, genset, wind generator – all these advanced features make for a yacht that can go anywhere, do anything, and actually be comfortable while doing it. The solar panels were upgraded in 2015, and the owners report that they lived entirely off the solar panels and almost never used the generator while underway. Occasionally, you'll hear people scoff at production yachts for being only for "coastal" cruising. "Oh, I'd never cross an ocean in that!" Not the Passage 42! Did I mention she's cruised in the North Sea and English Channel recently? When there were only aluminum-hull Ovni's and other "extreme" sailboats and expedition yachts at the docks, PROTEUS was right in there with the best of them. All image were made in June 2016 except the two exterior shots, which were made in Spain and Gibraltar in June 2015. More photographs are available on request. Here is an interior walkthrough. Final Thoughts from the Owner:We truly love this boat. Because of our time on PROTEUS, we will never be the same. Everywhere we go and everything we do for the rest of our lives will be colored by our experiences sailing this yacht. And it's not like we're ridiculously rich – we did everything on a modest budget, mostly on savings – but we did it, and you can, too. If you were looking for a chance to cut the lines and live like you always dreamed, PROTEUS could be that chance. It was for us. England, Ireland, Gibraltar, Morocco, half the islands in the Caribbean... it was all in reach, just outside the window. We look back on it now and think: "What on earth did we just do!?!" But we did. PROTEUS took us there. She'll take you there. raising and lowering Hunter 26.5 mast

My wife and I have a Hunter 26.5 sailboat that we keep on one side of the state during the spring summer and early part of the fall months but we want to take it to the other side of the state for the UT football season. It took us 6 hours (first time ever setting up a sailboat) to get this thing in the water the first time and we had to rent a $200 40' cherry picker to help set mast. Is this the only way to raise or lower the mast or does anyone else have any better suggestions. We want to move the boat to east TN next football season, but neither of us have 2 weeks that would allow us to take it via water. Our only option is to haul it out and haul it up there, but it was ALOT of trouble to launch originally, is there a better way to do this? Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

You could look into making or buying a "gin pole". https://tomeshew.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/stepping-the-mast-with-a-gin-pole/ Google it.

Meriachee

Just like everything else, the first few times will take longer, and if you really pay attention to the process, you'll find ways of shaving time. We have prepping the 270 down to road ready in an hour and a bit, setup takes just over 2 because of the fiddle-farting with the loos gauges.

Ken Cross

Similar to the link above, we used a pole on our MacGergor 26d. We could go from road to water in 20 minutes once we practiced up. That was with 2 of us working. Then we reused the block and tackle for a boom vang. Ken

Dionysis; Take a couple of photos of the deck, mast step and side shot of the boat. It has been some time so I need to remember. Then lets go from there. the 26.5 has a backstay. You are one of those. Use to place boats along the TN river at Concord Sailing Club, Ft. Louden/Tellico and so forth. I use to call Tellico, Snail Darter Lake. The old timers get a chuckle when I say that. I think one of the fellows use to go up the river on a power boat from the old Hunter Marine. If you know the James River in Virginny, it is hard to sail where the two rivers form the James unless you have a canoe. In my case a kayak is great but I turned mine over twice (new) last month which I call now the USS Titanic.

Joe

Forget Football, it's only a game. Go Sailing. Way more fun than watching a bunch of kids chase each other around.

waiting on those photos and if memory serves me that is a reverse transom style on his boat which has to be considered. Also advise as to mast mfg. is another consideration. Please more photos as suggested.

Crazy Dave, I went up to the boat today to install a new chart plotter depth finder combo and completely forgot to take the pics you requested. I will be back up there Saturday. I will take them then and post for you. Thanks for the help.

You are welcome sir.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Deep keel: 4.25’.

26.5 reviews This site has 20 owner reviews. I think the reviews I have read reflect the 26.5 strengths and weaknesses. Its a tender boat, but its quick and fun. Shallow wing keel allows more sailing options, but when (not if) you run aground, is a bit more difficult to get loose. It all very much depends on how you intend to use it.

With a minimum of effort the Hunter 26.5 can be raced in mixed fleet racing well. I liked the layout of these boats as you mention. This will NOT compete head to head with an S2 7.9, but can outpace a 25.5, and the catalina 25 quite well.
