Marco Island Yacht Club christens Riverside Marina

The Marco Island Yacht Club marked the grand opening of its new Riverside Marina with a christening ceremony on Nov. 9.

Christened the “Riverside Marina at Marco Island Yacht Club,” the $6.9 million state-of-the art marina provides for 27 new wet slips ranging from 45 to 125 feet long by a minimum of 23 feet wide.

Club officers and members, local officials and the professionals who worked on the project were present for the ceremony.

Yacht Club Chaplain Alan Sandlin offered a blessing and the Club’s Chairman Dave Everitt and Commodore Geoff Walker officially christened the marina by breaking a bottle of champagne.

“Market demand for boat slips over 65 feet has grown substantially over the past few years in Southwest Florida,” commented Dave Everitt, board chairman.

“We’re pleased that the Marco Island Yacht Club is now able to address this demand and attract new members to the club.”

Twenty-one of the 22 available slips have been spoken for. Short and long term-leases will be available as well as dockage for transient boaters visiting Marco Island.

The new marina will have a fulltime Dockmaster and is comprised of 22 floating docks, ranging from 45 feet to 125 feet in length, and five fixed docks with 40,000 lb. lifts to accommodate today’s larger outboard powered boats.

Five of the floating docks are reserved for transient usage. The facility offers boaters amenities including water, electricity, pump-out facilities, lighting, wi-fi and security cameras. In addition, boat-side food service will be available from the club. Using state-of-the-art dock designs, the marina meets category one to category three hurricane construction standards.

Founded in 2001, the member-owned Marco Island Yacht Club is located at the junction of the Marco River and the Yacht Basin at 1400 North Collier Boulevard, Marco Island, Florida.

The Marco Island Marina is situated just to the right just before the S.S. Judge Jolley Bridge on the Marco River Waterway. The marina was purchased by the slip owners on August 27,2001 from a local developer. A 120 Slip Marina with its state of the art floating dock system offers dockside amenities for slip owners, lessees and transient guests which include: Water, Cable TV, Wireless Internet, Electricity, Dockside Pump out, Shower/Restroom Facilities, Pool, Exercise Room and Barbecue Grills.The Marina is fully staffed to include a Dock Master, Assistant Dock Master and an Office Manager. Transient guests can dine at the Marco Island Yacht Club with a guest pass from the Dock Master's Office. Lunch and Dinner dockages are available to Marco Island Yacht Club Members and Reciprocal Guests year round. The Olde Florida Style Clubhouse is beautiful in its setting. This marina requires a credit card to hold your slip. Your credit card will only be charged if you leave the marina without paying. If you do not call and cancel your reservation within 24 hours of your arrival you will be charged for one nights dockage. Marco Island Yacht Club Building New Marina

Marco Island Yacht Club (MIYC) has started construction on a new marina designed to meet the growing need for larger slips in southwest Florida. The 27-slip marina will extend 362 feet into the Marco River waterway in front of the club’s entrance.

“The marina was initially approved in 2008, but because of the economy it was never built out. So we looked at the plans again, got them more up to date with modern technology, and resubmitted them to the City of Marco Island. We received approval on January 4th,” said Jon Holt, a MIYC member who serves on its project development committee.

The club originally had a wooden dock with some side ties in that location. It removed that dock and is replacing it with new docks that extend farther out into the harbor area. Most of the new slips will be on floating concrete docks on steel pilings, but there will be five slips with lifts on a fixed dock to accommodate boats with outboards.

The slip mix will consist of four 125-foot slips, one 100-foot slip, nine 70-foot slips, and eight 50-foot slips. All of the slips will be served by high-end electric, water service, pump-out facilities, lighting and security cameras. There will be a full-time dockmaster and valet service will be available as well.

The docks will have a minimum width of 24 feet, which will help them survive hurricanes. “The docks will be able to withstand up to four feet of wave action, and will be built to sustain a Category 1 hurricane when there are boats in the marina and a Category 3 storm if the marina is unoccupied,” said Holt.

Turrell, Hall & Associates is providing the engineering services for the project. Kelly Brothers Inc. of Fort Myers is doing the construction, and has already started reinforcing the seawall. “We are expecting to get the dock construction underway in February, and are hopeful that the project will be complete by the end of the year,” Holt added.

Marco Island Yacht Club will offer wet slip memberships that entitle a member to exclusive use of one of the marina’s slips. Five slips will be reserved for transient boaters.

Full refunds are given with a 48 hour (2 day) notice of cancellation prior to the departure date. Less than 48 hour notice (including weather-related) will receive a 25% refund OR you can reschedule at no extra charge . No-shows are non-refundable. Trip protection is available for purchase, allowing cancellation up to 8:30 a.m. on the departure day for a full refund less the trip protection. Cancellations must be done via text or email. Dome Homes at Cape Romano

Built in 1982 by Bob Lee, a retired independent oil producer, the Cape Romano Dome House is a man-made wonder to behold. Lee conceived a wildly unique, totally self-sustaining home that could only be accessed by boat and would serve as a vacation property. The solar-powered house sits on stilts 300 feet offshore from Cape Romano Island and consists of six dome-shaped structures. The walls are made from concrete containing sand from the island and rainwater runoff was collected, purified, and used as the home’s sole water source. Now abandoned as a residence, and with only four domes remaining, the Dome House is open for visitors to explore. Guided tours are available from independent tour companies and should be secured before your visit.

Keewaydin Island

This secluded island paradise is home to turquoise waters, white sand, and one of the only pet-friendly beaches around Marcos Island and Naples. 80% of the island remains undeveloped and can only be accessed by boat and water shuttle. An idyllic destination for beach walking and shelling, Keewaydin Island makes for an excellent spot to relax, play, and socialize.

White Horse Key Beach/Blind Pass
