Eggemoggin Reach

Eggemoggin Reach Regatta

Come morning, surrounded by gleaming varnish and shining brass, devout crews will hoist sails and be off for the Castine Classic Yacht Regatta. Over the course of 20 miles, a flotilla of wooden thoroughbreds will gallop, wind willing and with tender in tow, southwest along the granite shores of Isleboro, before rounding up and turning into Camden, where they’ll rest for the night.

By dawn, the fleet will have grown. On the grounds of the Camden Yacht Club, skippers will await a final blessing by the race committee before setting off from a point off North Haven, perhaps tacking, perhaps reaching through the rocky outcroppings and pine-speckled isles of the Deer Island Thoroughfare. It will be a pageant of sail as the boats cleave the harbor in Stonington and make the final run for the holy land: Eggemoggin Reach and the cove in Brooklin.

| | Castine Yacht Regatta Can there be a more eye-pleasing sailboat than the Concordia yawl? This year marks the 75th anniversary of the C. Raymond Hunt- and Waldo Howland-designed classics, and they will be belles of the ball at the Castine Classic Yacht Regatta, set for July 31 and August 1. For a list of festivities and race details, visit _ www.castineyachtclub.org_. |

As the setting sun casts late afternoon shadows, more sailboats — Herreshoffs, Concordias, Crockers and Aldens — will pour in, many accompanied by their own mother ships to house owners and crew.

Come Saturday, while dew dries on teak toerails, regatta co-founder Steve White of the Brooklin Boat Yard will gather the flock around him on shore. Soon cannons will blast and the race round Halibut Rocks — the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta — will be under way. As it should be. It’s August in Maine.

Castine Classic Yacht Race

The fifteenth annual Castine Classic Yacht Race to Camden will set sail from the Castine harbor bell at 11:45 AM on July 31. This 20-nautical mile race, which feeds into the Camden to Brooklin race and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, is expected to attract a magnificent fleet of Classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts, according to David Bicks, chairmen of these Castine events.

The Castine Yacht Club is sponsoring the seventeenth annual Castine Classic Yacht Race from Castine to Camden on Thursday, 4 August. This 19.6nm race will be the first of three day races in conjunction with the Camden Classic Yacht Race to Brooklin and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. The race is open to all monohull Classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts at least 28’ LOA with a valid CRF rating certificate. Each yacht must tow a proper dinghy; no toys, please. Each yacht must have property and third party liability insurance of at least $300,000.

Celebrating Dorade and America: The Castine Yacht Club is honored to celebrate two of the world’s most famous yachts, Dorade and America:

dorade-mus

The 52’ yawl Dorade, designed by Olin Stephens in 1929 at age 21, took the sailing world by storm, scoring decisive victories in 1931 in the Transatlantic and Fastnet Races—to be greeted upon its to New York return with a tickertape parade from the Battery to City Hall. Dorade then went on to taker her class in the Bermuda Race in 1932 and to win the TransPacific Race in 1936. Chapter II: Over 77 years later, under the stewardship of Matt Brooks and Pam Rorke Levy, Dorade has just achieved amazing success in these same races.

14/07/2013 - San Francisco (USA,CA) - 34th America's Cup - Louis Vuitton Cup - Round Robin - Race Day 5 - ETNZ Vs Artemis Racing (DNS) - A replica of the schooner America

The rakish schooner America, sailed by Troy Sears, is the official ambassador for the 2017 America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in international sport. America is a 139’ replica of the vessel which started the America’s Cup tradition in 1851 by defeating the British to win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s “100 Guinea Cup”.

These iconic yachts will be on exhibition at the Town Dock starting at noon on 3 August and at 1600 hours will be honored at a symposium in Delano Auditorium at the Maine Maritime Academy. Doug Adkins, will chair a panel of distinguished skippers and historians.

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series

Classic yacht racing has always been strong in Maine due to the state’s many world-class boatbuilders, yacht designers and the state’s gorgeous sailing waters. And this summer the competition will be fierce, as racing ramps up after last summer’s truncated season.

Also, in addition to a new race in Boothbay, there will be a new trophy for boats that compete in at least three classic yacht regattas. The Newport, RI-based Classic Yacht Owners Association has established Maine as its own District in a newly formed competition called the Classic Yachts Challenge Series. To win the Maine District Series, competitors need to race in three races in Maine in two separate Maine events. A goal of the District Championship Series is to give boats that can’t travel between districts the chance to be recognized. To qualify for the Overall Series Championship, an additional two races must be completed with one being in either the Massachusetts or NY/RI/CT districts. The Overall Championship series unites 13 prestigious classic yacht regattas from Long Island Sound to Eggemoggin Reach, Maine.

Maine’s classic racing season will start with the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge, July 24 and 25; followed by the Camden Classics Cup, July 29-31; the Castine Classic Yacht Race, August 5; and the Camden to Brooklin Feeder race on August 6. The Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, now in its 36 th  year and the regatta that started it all in Maine wraps up the Maine series on August 7. These are destination regattas. Every town puts out the welcome mat for these sailors and their crews.

The Maine District Champion and Overall Champion will be announced in the fall in Newport, RI at the CYOA awards ceremony. For more information of the Classic Yachts Challenge Series – https://www.classicyachts.org/series/

The membership-driven, nonprofit Classic Yacht Owners Association was established in 2015 to encourage fellowship amongst owners within the classic yacht community. One of the organization’s goals is to help shape the future of the sport by influencing and cultivating long-term regional cooperation amongst those who are dedicated to owning, maintaining, and racing sailing vessels. CYOA also works to promote classic yacht ownership with the objective of attracting new members and creating new funding opportunities to support future classic yacht events.

Black Watch Wins Ames Cup In Castine Classic Regatta

Published on August 6th, 2013 by Slade -->

Castine, ME (August 5, 2013) – In the fourteenth annual Castine Classic Yacht Regatta, Black Watch, a 67.8’ Sparkman & Stephens yawl built in 1958, sailed by Peter Kellogg and Lars Forsberg, led a fleet of 40 classic yachts to win the coveted Ames Cup. The Ames Cup honors the memory of Richard Glover Ames and Henry Russell Ames who were lost at sea on June 9th, 1935 south of the Grand Banks in an unsuccessful effort to save their father who was washed overboard during the Newport to Bergen, Norway yacht race. The Ames family hailed from Castine.

This year’s Castine Classic Regatta celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the famed 39’10” and 41’ Concordia yawls. Designed by C. Raymond Hunt with the assistance of Waldo Howland, the Concordia Company commissioned 103 yachts of this class from 1938 to 1966, all but four of which were built at the Abeking and Rasmussen shipyard in Germany. With their extraordinary success as offshore racers and cruisers, these Concordias became the biggest class of large wooden sailboats ever constructed.

Prior to the race, 13 Concordia yachts were on exhibition at the Castine town dock and were honored at a symposium at the Maine Maritime Academy. The large crowd attending the symposium heard from speakers illuminating the finer details of the design, construction, and sailing qualities of these boats. John Eide, editor of The Concordian and owner of Golondrina, chaired the symposium, which included Doug Adkins, author of Dorade: The History of an Ocean Racing Yacht and owner of Concordia Coriolis; Queene Foster, who has sailed Concordias since the 1970’s; Giffy Full, the dean of wooden boat surveyors; Brodie MacGregor, owner of the Concordia Company; Benjamin Mendlowitz, premier wooden boat photographer; and Jon Wilson, founder of WoodenBoat Magazine.

The Castine event kicked off three days of classic boat racing, culminating in the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta.

castine classic yacht regatta

The 19.6 mile race from Castine to Camden, sponsored by the Castine Yacht Club, was sailed under ideal conditions this year. David Bicks, co-chair of the event with Bob Scott of Castine, said that “In the last two years, our race was plagued by fog and lack of wind. But this year’s clear skies and steady 8-12 knot southeast breeze made for perfect sailing conditions.”

Katrina, a 41’ Concordia built in 1963, sailed by Joe Harris, led the celebrated Concordia fleet. Otter, sailed by Robert Keefer, took second place, followed by John Eide’s Golondrina.

In the Classic A Class, Black Watch was followed by Puffin, a 47.8’ Sparkman & Stephens design built in 1969 and sailed by Cabot Lyman. Spartan, a 72’ Herreshoff-designed NY-50 built in 1912 and skippered by Charles Ryan, took third place. The Classic A Class included a highly competitive match race among four Sparkman & Stephens 45’ NY-32s built in 1936. Falcon, sailed by Bob Scott of Castine, edged out Siren, sailed by Peter Cassidy; Isla, sailed by Henry May; and Gentian, sailed by Richard Armstrong, to lead the NY-32s in the three race series.

Thora, a Little Harbor 38 sailed by Vince Todd, led the Classic B Class. Palawan, a 47’ Sparkman & Stephens yawl built in 1952 and skippered by Scott Gazelle, took second place. Tiger Maru, a 37’ Laurent Giles design built in 1971 and skippered by Julien Davies, followed close behind in third place.

In the Spirit of Tradition Class, Isobel, a 75’ sloop designed by Stephens-Waring and built in 2011, sailed by Richard Schotte, claimed first place honors. The 47’ Stephens Taylor designed Lark, built in 2012 and skippered by Patrick Wilmerding, took second place, followed by Vortex, Steve White’s 52’ Reimers sloop.

At the awards ceremony at the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin following the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, Bicks presented the Ames Cup and the Sparkman & Stephens trophy to Peter Kellogg and Lars Forsberg of Black Watch. The Mitch Gibbons-Neff trophy, presented in memory of Mitch Gibbons-Neff, late head of S&S who regularly crewed on Scott’s NY-32 Falcon, was awarded to Bob Scott, skipper of Falcon.

The Phalarope trophy, awarded to the top Concordia yacht in memory of Thomas G. Ashton Sr, was presented to Joe Harris of Katrina.

In other words, attendees get treated to the best in summertime entertainment. The races are a thrill to watch, and the dockside social soirees, awards ceremonies and parties enable attendees to chat with New England’s finest yachtsmen. For yachters, there isn’t a better way to spend a summer weekend in New England.

Which sailing regattas should you attend? Worldwide Boat has the insider’s scoop on some of New England’s most prestigious summer sailboat races. Try to make it to a few – and of course, a sailboat charter for race day offers the best seat to take in all the thrilling action.

Specked with islands more than 200 miles and spectacular harbors, the bay offers the best in Maine yachting. The Castine to Camden race puts yachters on a 20-mile course across the Bay, from Castine to Camden. Castine Yacht Club, the race’s sponsor, opens the regatta to classic and Spirit of Tradition monohulls over 28’.

Throughout the weekend, attendees are welcomed to cocktail hours, expos and plenty to see and do.
