The history of Swan Maxis begins early on, a few years after the establishment of Nautor. An expert client asked for a 17 m Sparkman & Stephens. It was the year 1970 and the magnificent Swan 55 took shape. At that time, it was one of the largest yachts in the world to be produced in series and in fibreglass. Sixteen were built, in both yawl and sloop versions.

“The new Swan 120 Superyacht encompasses Nautor´s philosophy and DNA on its largest expression. Her sailing performance is exhilarating, thanks to the modern canoe body of the hull and the sail plan matched by an efficient twin rudder lateral plan which includes various keel options. A pioneering clean and efficient push button control deck arrangement offering ample access to the sea and sun bathing it is another of the key ingredients. All in all the 120 it is a very attractive proposition, created by a team of experts, and built according to Nautor best practice.”

A clean foredeck leads aft to the coach roof of the raised saloon, which blends seamlessly into an expansive, protected cockpit area. This core element of the experience afloat is completely free of lines, enabling those not engaged in the sailing of this sublime superyacht to truly relax while underway. The detailed design conceals a sophisticated, electrically controlled bimini top and sprayhood, which disappear into completely flush coach roof cassette when not in use, and offers extensive shelter from sea and sun.

At anchor, the cockpit area transforms into an encompassing lounge space. With versatile deck sofas, it is the perfect place to unwind as the sun sets before converting into an elegant, intimate dining area. Following the philosophy of other designs in the Maxi Swanline, the Swan 120 also offers ‘aisle seats’ to enhance both the sailing and leisure experience.

Aft of the deck lounge is a clean deck space, still sheltered by the coamings, which runs to behind the steering pedestals with ‘aero-seating’. In-between the helming stations, it is possible to incorporate a ‘snug-island’, which provides protected access to the aft accommodation with a dodger, sprayhood and cozy seating for those on watch.

The voluminous stern section will gain real attention when the yacht is at rest. The transom folds down hydraulically to form a teak-decked swim platform and reveal spacious garage housing a tender of 4.5 metres and other toys of choice. Once the tender is launched, the large area becomes available for watersports, sunbathing and even dining. The design means the clean Swan stern under sail effortlessly transforms into a large ‘beach-deck’, connected to a well-organized ‘hangar’ for maximum entertainment at anchor. In addition to the stern platform swinging down, a section of the aft-deck may be opened up to convert into a large sunbed at deck level.

The hull and deck of the Swan 120 will be a full carbon fibre construction, using epoxy SPRINT® pre-preg carbon fibre interior and exterior skins on a core of M-grade Corecell foam. The pre-preg system provides the ultimate in structural stiffness and rigidity at the lightest possible weight, while at the same time ensuring absolute structural integrity. The hull will be laid up in a female mould tooled from the same technology, thereby ensuring identical mechanical properties when the hull undergoes heat curing using the very latest in oven technology.

At the heart of the yacht, and flooded with natural light from the coach roof above, is a spacious saloon, featuring a lounge area to port and a dining suite to starboard. There is a unique saloon layout option that features a large hull window adjacent to daybeds.

This soft-furnished space is perfect while under sail or just before the night falls. The proximity to the hull and water offers an experience of the sea in true alignment with Misa’s core philosophy for the interior. It has been commented that these saloon beds are reminiscent of the ‘pilot berths’ typically found in Swan yachts from the 1970s.

The Majesty 120 superyacht delivers a near-unbeatable mix of cabins and deck space but it's a new level of finish that might make this latest model from Gulf Craft such an important boat

This 37m superyacht market features two and three-deck yachts of quite incredible ability and luxury, but they usually have one thing in common - five cabins. The tri-deck Majesty 120 has six, and they are all good. Add in a sensational sun deck and a level of finish previously unseen from this Middle Eastern yard and the 120 looks like a very important boat, both for its builder and the wider market.

Whilst touring this 120 in Cannes, the same question kept returning. How has Majesty pulled off the trick of creating an excellent six-cabin 37m yacht when the competition is mainly stuck at five cabins? 

Well, with the benefit of reflection and looking at lots of rival yacht layouts, the answer, to a large degree, is pretty straightforward. 

By moving the crew quarters aft, Majesty and Christiano Gatto Design have made room for a forward VIP on the lower deck, adding to the four guest cabins amidships that every boat at this length has. Nearly every other yacht in this class keeps the crew forward, so no VIP.

Now, you might think that moving the crew quarters just means the space is lost at the aft end of the boat, and you would be right, but because it is a smaller, three-person, crew quarters aft with no beach club to eat into the LOA it all fits into place. But the sixth cabin, that excellent VIP, is just the start of the story.

The tri-deck design of the Majesty is fairly in keeping with this yard’s contemporary fleet, but there is something more impressive at work here, from the powerful bows to the clean, linear upper works. It's a design that really delivers onboard, with a mix of cabins and decks that can’t be beaten on space. The crowning glory of it all is a majestic sun deck that feels like it has been lifted from a 60m vessel. 

Finished with a Flourish

The other thing about this 120, though, is a clear and very impressive progression on fit-out and finish. The interior is the best we have seen from a Majesty yet, full of detail, sophistication and style, while the decks carry a real air of superyacht confidence.

Sitting just under 300GT, the yacht is on a par with many tri-deck rivals on overall dimensions and volume, so the 120’s successes can be put down to pure design, making intelligent calls that benefit the owner and guests.  

Away from the onboard quality, a semi-displacement hull and Caterpillar C32B 2,400hp engines deliver a very useful 20 knots. Reduce the revs and a range of around 1,000nm at 10 knots is possible, fairly low for a yacht of this size packing 24,000 litres (6,300 US gal) of fuel.

Interior Accommodation

Because this Majesty is so smart and considered inside, it is easy to look past the design and proportions that enable the yacht to impress. Every part of the interior is spacious and functional. The salon and owner's stateroom on the main deck, the five cabins below, and the upper lounge above, everything feels and is beautifully balanced. 

If there is one omission, compared to more recent 35-40m superyacht designs, it is a lack of inside-outside thinking. The main and upper salons have the usual aft deck doors but there are no side doors or balconies to open things up.

There is the option to replace a lower deck cabin with a lounge, a feature that does remove this yacht’s six-cabin USP but if you only want five cabins then it does create some private space for friends and family.

This internal choice reflects a wider enthusiasm by Majesty to work with clients to create highly personalised yachts. Fabrics, finishes, cabinetry and furniture are all bespoke to the buyer.  

Cabin Craft

Staying below decks, the five-cabin layout has two symmetrical doubles aft, with two twins leading on to the all-important VIP. This forward cabin is notable for its excellent floor space in the entranceway, something that makes the cabin feel so much more usable. The finish is very good, as is the ensuite and walk-in closet that push aft. All the cabins are ensuite with deep sections of hull glass for the four guest cabins, the doubles come with dressing tables.

Up on the main deck, the owner’s stateroom is the place to understand the uplift in finish we are seeing across the Majesty fleet. The cabin feels like it is enjoying a lot of the 120’s 8.3m (27ft) beam with plenty of floor space around the berth and big sections of glass to light it all up. There’s a walk-in closet off the entrance and a long sofa below one of the windows but the final furnishings and finish will be left to your tastes. The test boat came with an ivory palette with panelled walls and contrasting, highly lacquered, dark cabinetry.

Back out of the owner’s cabin, the kitchen lies just around to port and it is a place you may well find yourself in. It is a little reflected fact that guests often congregate in a crewed yacht’s galley, especially if it is as big and social as this one. The kitchen itself is big, lined by storage and worktops, with a dedicated cold storage section. A place designed for serious use, the yacht‘s chef will be very happy, but the neat diner makes this a place the whole yacht might well enjoy.

Upper Class

A central, backlit walnut staircase connects the lower, main and upper decks, and it is the upper deck we will head to now. A tri-deck yacht’s upper lounge delivers social space in an elevated and private setting that the main salon can’t deliver. Here we have a simple salon and bar area but again the final layout is yours to decide. 

The joy of these smaller and so more convivial lounges is the view they deliver and how they connect to the upper aft deck. Here, the upper deck doors open onto a covered and private dining area with its own barbecue area, creating a mix of lounge, bar and dining across the deck.

Helm Station

The tri-deck design creates a proper pilothouse on the upper deck, with the captain’s cabin running off it - something that eases the pressure on the crew quarters. The helm station spreads across the wheelhouse, with excellent forward visibility and the space for up to four MFD screens. Doors to each side mean crew access to the upper deck is easy and guests can join the Captain, with a raised sofa tucked aft.

The upper deck does have an open aft section away from the overhang but it feels like a dedicated dining area and that’s another considered move by Majesty, because, just a few steps away, the sun deck delivers all the sky and lounge space you could desire.

The sun deck is a triumph, as good as anything you will find below 40m and feels like the kind of terrace that used to be the preserve of 60m yachts. Again, the beam plays its part. The sun deck feels wide as well as long, with a central bar and lounge finished in rich washed teak beneath an impressive hardtop, inlaid with more teak, stainless steel and cool lighting. 

At the forward end, a raised spa pool is surrounded by sun pads, to the aft an open deck can come with all manner of seating, the test boat’s modular, movable pads are a great option. But it is the sun deck’s overall size and quality that impresses most, all set safely within tall, stainless steel guardrails and ready for you to enjoy.

Decks & Tenders

The other on-deck highlight is the long sweep of elevated foredeck lounge that will be a popular on-port hangout or an exhilarating spot when underway. This forward section has a dual role, the lounge leading down to a working foredeck with a central crane for launching two PWCs.

The main tender has a garage aft. The PR shots might show a club of sorts with some smart deck furniture but this is a garage first and foremost and that furniture will have to be stowed somewhere else when the tender is stowed.

With the tender launched, the garage’s teak deck and neat wet bar create a fun hydraulic waterside terrace with smart steps adding some luxurious ceremony to taking a dip.

Value For Money

Gulf Craft and its Majesty range offer comparatively good value to the superyacht world. Its designs might not always offer the advanced features and design seen on its rivals but the ability to build large yachts with enticing customisation makes Majesty an interesting option. And, of course, if you cruise in the Middle East region, Gulf Craft’s local support network cannot be beaten.

From our experience, when the vast array of extras these yachts demand are added, the pricing tends to get uncomfortably close to the Italian builders that rule this market.

What sets this boat apart from other models is that it can stand up to scrutiny purely on its design and finish and not rely on being that much less money than the competition. 

The Majesty 120 is an important yacht, one that boosts Gulf Crafts' constantly improving credentials. It’s important, simply because it is so good. A 37m yacht that delivers superb decks and cabins and comes finished with a new flourish and confidence. The crew quarters are small, but if your cruising is about coastal adventures with as many friends as possible this is a yacht you need to see.

First, let’s deal with the wonderful elephant in the room. The Majesty 120 finds itself in the same company as Benetti’s Motopanfilo 37m , a wondrous, elegant, timeless and massively capable yacht that simply cannot be beaten. A tri-deck design with a fun fourth viewing platform and a mini beach club, the Motopanfilo has a captivating interior modelled on a whale’s skeleton with ivory ribs running through the yacht. The owner’s stateroom is magnificent as are the shapely guest cabins. A masterclass that will only improve with age, the Motopanfilo has a range of just under 4,000nm - but it is only five cabins.

Another Italian contender guaranteed to be of interest is the tri-deck Sanlorenzo SD126 . Identical to the Majesty on overall dimensions it enjoys a vast salon and main deck owner’s stateroom, plus a class-leading crew quarters forward. The sundeck isn't quite as big but the two-tier foredeck lounge is excellent. It is a slightly slower yacht with a top speed of around 18 knots but a 3,000nm range adds to the yacht’s superyacht status.

Next, we have two yachts that aren’t tri-decks and also stick at five cabins but both are worth your time. The Westport 125 has a massive interior, with an impressive salon, main deck stateroom and crew quarters. The engine bay is excellent with a dedicated engineering zone and there is space for a mini beach club. A top speed of 25 knots is joined by a range of around 3,000nm.

Back to Italy and the sharp, sleek Custom Line 120 . This yacht has a very similar main and below-deck layout to the Majesty only with its crew quarters forward. There’s no sundeck but there is an excellent flybridge, with a pilothouse tucked just below for longer passages, and a foredeck lounge. A tender garage lies aft for tidy launch and recovery.

First look: Swan 120 – designed for outside living

At the recent Monaco Yacht Show, we took a look at several of the featured new yachts on display, including the new Swan 120

Being moored stern-to in Monaco’s Port Hercule during the recent Monaco Yacht Show 2021 was the perfect place to showcase a trump feature of the Swan 120. Its ‘beach deck’ with a twin set of steps that gently lead down from the aft deck will rival some of the aft ends of the surrounding motoryachts.

The new Swan 98 and and Swan 120 are the latest in Swan’s new generation German Frers-designed range of performance cruisers. These powerful, beamy designs sport twin rudders and plenty of form stability in a style which has already proven popular over the last three years with the 65 and 78.

These latest superyacht versions are of carbon-epoxy construction. Geared around ocean passagemaking at speed they come with the option for a telescopic keel, which buys improved windward performance paired with shoal draught capability.

By carrying almost max beam right aft on the Swan 120, designer Frers has created the multiple benefits of form stability, huge volumes below and the space to create this aft hangar-slash-beach terrace area.

The transom folds down hydraulically revealing a garage for a 4.5m tender and various toys.

Deck lounging space has clearly been a key criteria of the design. The vast guest cockpit is adorned with multiple sofas and can be protected by a bimini and sprayhood which rise out of a coachroof cassette at the push of a button.

A 1.8m-wide companionway of curved glass then eases you into the deck saloon where there are vast daybeds adjacent to the large hull portlights.

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests. 

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.
