Sailing Paradise: From Cancun to Isla Mujeres on Xcaret's Catamaran

December 12, 2023

My experience on the new Xcaret Xailing tour: Catamaran from Cancun to Isla Mujeres

A few days ago, I went with my friends to explore the new Xcaret tour that departs from the Cancun Hotel Zone Pier to Isla Mujeres. I'll tell you every detail of our experience on the Catamaran Prime Tour.

Check prices and what's included here: Catamaran by Xcaret.

Let's start by getting to know the tour's destination, one of my favorites in Mexico: Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres - Magical Town

Isla Mujeres, located in the Mexican Caribbean, is a tropical paradise that captivates its visitors with its natural beauty and relaxed charm. Surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters , the island offers white sandy beaches , perfect for enjoying sunny days by the sea.

Its name, "Island of Women," is derived from pre-Hispanic goddess statues fishermen found on the island in honor of Ixchel, the moon goddess and fertility goddess.

In addition to its cultural history, Isla Mujeres attracts marine life enthusiasts with snorkeling and diving opportunities to explore vibrant coral reefs and diverse underwater ecosystems.

default

In addition to its beaches, the charming center of the island, with cobblestone streets and colorful houses, invites travelers to stroll and discover local shops, restaurants, and markets full of crafts.

Isla Mujeres is a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle, where visitors can enjoy the serenity of its natural landscapes and the warmth of its local culture, making this island an unforgettable destination in the heart of the Mexican Caribbean.

Catamaran Journey from Cancun to Isla Mujeres

The meeting point to start the tour is at "El Embarcadero," located in the Cancun Hotel Zone, on Boulevard Kukulcán at kilometer 4.5.

From this same place, ferries also depart for the Cancun-Isla Mujeres route. You can get all the information about that service here: Ferry to Isla Mujeres routes and schedules .

default

In addition to providing services such as parking, restrooms, ATMs, and ticket booths, El Embarcadero features a souvenir shop where you can buy items that could be beneficial for your journey to Isla Mujeres, including swimsuits, towels, hats, caps, sandals, and more.

We embarked on the Xcaret Xailing tour aboard a catamaran, and I'll now explain what makes it unique.

A catamaran is a watercraft, whether sail or motor-powered, with two parallel hulls connected by a crossbeam framework. Its design provides exceptional stability and efficiency in the water, reducing resistance and allowing higher speeds than single-hull vessels.

default

Catamarans are popular in the Mexican Caribbean for recreation and tourist trips, offering a smooth and comfortable experience in calm seas. Their versatility makes them ideal for various water activities, from relaxing sunset cruises to day trips for snorkeling or fun parties on board.

First Stop: Snorkeling on the Reef

Once on board, the first activity we did after enjoying our refreshing welcome drink was gearing up to explore the coral reef. The guides provided us with a life jacket, a full-face mask, and fins (optional) and explained how to use them.

For those experiencing this for the first time, let me explain:

default

What is snorkeling?

Snorkeling is a recreational water activity that involves swimming on the water's surface equipped with a mask, breathing tube, and fins. Participants observe fascinating marine life while breathing through the tube, keeping their faces submerged.

This practice allows exploring coral reefs , colorful fish, and other underwater ecosystems in an accessible way without heavy diving equipment. Snorkeling is a popular experience to appreciate marine beauty in a relaxed manner and is suitable for people of all ages.

In this tour, we were divided into groups of 10 people per guide and swam gradually through different reef areas in El Meco , between Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

Second Stop: Beach Club in Isla Mujeres

After returning to the catamaran, drying off, and refreshing ourselves with delicious premium drinks, we prepared to disembark at a beautiful beach club in Isla Mujeres.

As we approached the island, a dreamlike tropical view appeared, full of palm trees and a beach with calm waters, perfect for resting and having a good time.

default

We had free time to take advantage of according to each person's preferences. The activities available for enjoyment include:

· Buffet lunch

· Open bar

· Access to the pool

· Relaxing on sun loungers

· Strolling along the beach

· Entering the sea

· Using bathrooms and showers

· Taking advantage of the beautiful spots for a photo session

default

We found that the time given was perfect for enjoying all the amenities. Undoubtedly, it is a very cozy and relaxing space.

default

Upon returning to the catamaran, the crew offered us a variety of freshly prepared drinks, including mojitos, mezcalinas, Palomas, micheladas, and more. We continued the journey through the dazzling colors of the Caribbean Sea towards our next activity.

Third stop of the tour: free time to explore Isla Mujeres

Our next stop was to explore Isla Mujeres freely. The guides explained several things we could do, such as visiting the island's most popular beaches, buying souvenirs at the local markets, and walking through its colorful streets, among many other options.

default

We decided to explore the island by walking through its picturesque downtown streets and reaching the viewpoint with a beautiful sea view. We also headed to the beach to enjoy the white sand full of shells, seashells, and ocean waves.

default

Return to Cancun

After strolling and enjoying this beautiful Magical Town, snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea reef, and enjoying the beach club, it's time to return to Cancun.

Tip: The tour guides explained that we could decide whether to stay longer on Isla Mujeres, return on one of Xcaret's ferries at a time that suits us best, or return on the catamaran.

If you choose to return on the catamaran with the tour, the atmosphere becomes lively on board, as there is a party, dancing, music, and drinks for those who prefer it.

A New Addition to the Xcaret All-Fun Inclusive Offerings…

Grupo Xcaret has announced a new addition to their All-Fun Inclusive offerings–a catamaran cruise !  My understanding is that the catamaran leaves from La Casa de la Playa (the resort immediately to the north of Hotel Xcaret Arte), but right now I can’t seem to find out more information about the details.  The new catamaran cruise is for all guests of Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Hotel Xcaret Arte, and La Casa de la Playa, all Grupo Xcaret properties.

Here’s a short list of current All-Fun Inclusive offerings:

  • Veleo Xailing (the new catamaran cruise)
  • ferry to Isla Mujeres which leaves from the western edge of Cancun’s Hotel Zone
  • complimentary roundtrip airport to hotel transportation
  • complimentary access to the following parks and attractions (no reservation required):  Xcaret, Xplor, and Xenses
  • complimentary access to the following parks and attractions (advance reservation required):  Xavage, Xplor Fuego (Xplor Park at night), and Xel-Ha.
  • complimentary tours/excursions (advance reservation required):  Xenotes, and Xoximilco (a night excursion featuring the music of Mexico while riding on a boat–famous for overdrinking since it’s an open bar on beer and tequila, you also get dinner for free).

Some of the original excursions are not offered anymore (I went to Chichen Itza for free when I stayed at Hotel Xcaret Mexico), but the very popular Xenotes tour seems like it has taken its place.  I also took advantage of doing the Xoximilco excursion at the time and personally did not like it due to the mandatory group games which occurred while the boat was traveling from one performance point to another, but that is just me, others may enjoy such entertainment.  I also went to Xcaret Park several times during my Hotel Xcaret Mexico stay, it is a huge park with much to offer vacationers.  If you want to read more about my Xcaret Park experience, click here to read my blog post about it.

Keep in mind that All-Fun Inclusive offerings means you get free roundtrip transportation to the park or event as well as free admission.  If the setup is the same, I was even allowed a free lunch and non-alcoholic drinks (at a specific park restaurant) when visiting Xcaret Park.  At the time there was a separate admissions area just for Hotel Xcaret guests, so look for that when you arrive at the parks.

I welcome the new catamaran excursion since I always insist on taking one when cruising the Caribbean or visiting Hawaii, it’s one of my favorite things to do.  Since I will be staying at Hotel Xcaret Arte in March, I will be contacting the resort about a week ahead of arrival and make my reservation–hopefully there will be space and I can document the event to share with you.

If anyone has taken this new Grupo Xcaret All-Fun Inclusive addition, let us all know how it went and what was involved.  Thanks, and I will see you in Cancun!

Hotel Xcaret Arte: The Ultimate Guide *Start Here*

catamaran xcaret arte

If you are considering a trip to Hotel Xcaret Art e, or just trying to find some more information, you’ve come to the right place!

When planning a trip for our family of 6 (myself, husband, 2 young adult kids, and their 2 significant others), it’s a fun challenge to find a destination that will suit everyone’s taste. My travel style is typically go-go-go, but I recognize the value of travel that includes some true vacation down time!

For New Year’s 2023, I was looking to splurge on something special. We are at the point where all 6 of us can put away some food and drinks, so I was leaning toward all inclusive, and just looking for the right one. These were my criteria:

  • Activities, preferably no additional charge, to break up the pool/beach time
  • Great food (something all inclusive resorts are NOT known for)
  • Gorgeous pools and resort grounds
  • Culture/location – most resorts are not the *best* place to get a feel for the culture of an area, so I was specifically looking for a resort that puts culture front and center.

catamaran xcaret arte

Why Hotel Xcaret?

A little background:.

Once I started reading about Xcaret (the “X” is pronounced “Ish” – you will see the “X” a lot!), I got more and more excited. It was exactly what I was looking for. The Xcaret complex is about 8 miles south of Playa del Carmen , so about 1 hour and 15 mins from the Cancun airport (more with traffic, and there’s usually traffic). It consists of 3 hotels: Hotel Xcaret Mexico (the OG), Hotel Xcaret Arte (adults only), and La Casa de las Playas (also adult only, this is a recently opened ultra high end option). Hotel Xcaret Arte was our resort of choice, and will be the primary focus of this series (although we were fortunate to enjoy aspects of Hotel Xcaret Mexico as well).

1. The Activities

There are also 3 different “eco-parks” on the main campus: Xcaret Park , Xplor/Xplor Fuego , and Xenses . And this leads us to the main thing that set Hotel Xcaret apart from other all inclusive resorts – they are also what they refer to as “all-fun” inclusive. There are the 3 parks near the resort (a shuttle runs approx. all day every day on a 20 minute circuit between the hotels and parks): Xcaret, Xplor, and Xenses. In addition to the nearby parks, there are many other options to keep you busy (at no extra charge!!) You can take a catamaran or ferry to Isla Mujeres (Xailing), you can do a Mexican “floating fiesta” ( Xoximilco ), you can tour Chichen Itza ( Xichen ), and much more! See my post delving into the available parks and activities in depth ( Hotel Xcaret Arte: Time for Adventure – the Activities and Excursions ).

catamaran xcaret arte

2. The Food

Great food and drink are super important to our family, especially on vacation! Xcaret kept coming up as I searched for the elusive resort that boasts quality delicious food. The consensus is that while Hotel Xcaret Mexico ‘s food is delicious, Hotel Xcaret Arte (to no surprise, as it is adults only), is for a more sophisticated palate.

Arte has restaurants requiring reservations ( Tah Xido , Kibi Kibi , Encanta , C hino Poblano , Xaak – this one is an additional cost) and restaurants that don’t ( Cayuco , Arenal , Cantina VaIPy , Apapachoa , Mercado de San Juan ). They also have poolside service, room service, food carts, and various bars/walkup cafes. And the best part, it’s not quantity over quality. It’s easy to see that the staff takes pride in their food craftsmanship!

catamaran xcaret arte

3. The Resort/Grounds

For the portion of our trip we weren’t eating great food or doing fun activities, we were hoping to be served drinks in a tropical paradise. Hotel Xcaret Arte checked that box too! For lounging by a body of water, you have ample pools (including rooftop pools at all the casas except La Paz ), Coves and rivers throughout the property (with fish!), and of course, the beach. It should be noted that if the beach is your #1 criteria, Xcaret may not be the best bet. We only went down to the beach once during our stay – we were more than happy enjoying the unique cove/river environment. It’s a small beach, but there is bar service and some chairs if that’s your preference! We were happy mainly enjoying the view of the turquoise ocean from the rooftop pools.

catamaran xcaret arte

4. The Culture/Location

Xcaret has outings to both Tulum and to Chitzen Itza with tour guides to explore the ruins of the incredible Mayan civilization. The main park, Xcaret Par k, has its own ruins as well. Everywhere you look at the resort, Mexican culture is front and center. The treats left daily in our room were all handmade Mexican candies in locally handmade woven containers (I love my collection!). Other assorted snacks in the room throughout our stay are made locally as well. There is an emphasis on Mexican art throughout the property and in the rooms themselves. The casas represent different art forms and have workshops for each: Musica (music), Diseno (design), Artistas (art/painting), Piramide (pottery).

catamaran xcaret arte

Once I determined that Hotel Xcaret Arte had absolutely everything I wanted, I started working on making it happen! This is NOT a budget resort, but in my opinion, it was worth every penny. If you come across a deal, don’t hesitate to grab it and go have an amazing time!

  • Eric R 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Easy, convenient, frequent and reasonably priced ferry Great experience, very easy, with frequent and timely departures to and from mainland Cancun and Isla Mujeres, less than 30 minutes travel time. My only constructive feedback would be to make it a little bit more clear which lines to get into when leaving Isla Mujeres, there was more than one line there for various things. • karenaX3415HB 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome ride!! Either on deck in the open air or inside with air con, this was a fantastic ride both ways, both days. Super friendly & helpful staff always with huge smiles. We went to Isla de la Mujeres then a week later, back to Cancun. If waiting, try the port restaurant, they plays great tunes and have amazing pizza!! 🍕🍹🍺 Read more Written February 7, 2024
  • JetSkiRacr1 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Fast and easy but 1 way only shuttle Boat is nicer than average. Shuttle ride was quick and easy from outside Fiesta Americana Coral Beach. I should have read the small print. The return shuttle wasn't included. The few $$ we save we spent on a cab back. So it cost the same as the other company overall. No big loss. They took credit cards so I went with them. Read more Written September 5, 2023
  • Gazpacho16 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great comfort and amazing views! We took the air-conditioned ferry boat return trip to Isla Mujeres with Xcaret Xailing. Tickets included admission to the XCARET rotating tower as well. We enjoyed beautiful bird-eye views from the top and took some amazing pictures! Highly recommend this transport and sightseeing activity. It was well worth it! Read more Written August 1, 2023

  • yaya_1515 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Look for an actual ticket booth! Ok so I’m writing this review in the hopes of saving the ones reading this money lol So the ferry itself was beautiful, smooth ride and the schedule is right on the dot. But when you arrive, if you’re walking here like we did because it was really close to our resort , that’s when you have to watch out. When you walk in there is a little information booth to your left and a small desk on your right… avoid them if you want to save some money. So my husband thought that’s where we had to buy the tickets for the ferry, and he asked the lady in the booth and she said “ the desk behind you, that’s where you buy them” so we turn around and when we asked how much the tickets were he said told us the price in pesos but after we paid we calculated in dollars and was around $30 bucks per person. I thought to myself, that’s pretty pricey ☹️ So we make our way down the hallway and go down the staircase and low and behold the actual ticket booth was right there 😩 only $11 bucks per adult and like $7 bucks per kid. So I went back up there and asked him why he charged us so much if the tickets were much cheaper downstairs. He went ahead to tell me that it included the sky ride which we were never asked if we wanted to do that. So yeah lost money there and didn’t even end up doing the sky ride because it didn’t interest us. Morale of the story, go to the downstairs area and pay at the actual ticket booth, it has a big convenience store next to it & buy your tickets there if you’re not interested in the sky ride thingy. • GK360 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent What a great experience on this ride to and from Isla Mujeres for a day trip. We walked up to the ticket booth on the Cancun side - no line - boarded the ferry about 15 minutes before departure time. Clean, comfortable and professional. There is open-air seating out front and air-conditioned seating inside. We rode inside on the way to Isla and rode open-air out front on the way back to Cancun. So enjoyable. Skip the overcrowded "yellow and blue" ride - take Xcaret to Isla. Read more Written June 27, 2023
  • Bill P 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent service at the best price on a newer ship Purchased Tickets online (received a discount) for round trip from Cancun to Isla Mujeres the night before. Arrived at terminal 30 minutes before 9AM trip. No line at ticket counter, Showed the pleasant young lady my code on my phone and she gave me the tickets. Very easy. Be aware that you have to scan your tickets before getting on to the ferry. Look for a Blue terminal outside of the gift shop and line up there. Plenty of seating options. Outside on the back deck with shade, inside with AC and nice clean comfortable seats or outside on the bow in full sun. The return trip was just as simple. On Isla Mujeres, they have you line up in the shade in a que which makes it easy. Read more Written May 21, 2023
