How boats are built: tour of Fairline Yachts’ factory

Over the years here at Motorboat and Yachting, we’ve been lucky enough to sail some of the the most technically advanced and glamorous boats on the water. Whenever we get the chance to test out a new boat, we always bring our readers our expert opinion on how those boats behave. But what we have not really delved into before is how boats are built.

We sent Jack Haines off to the English midlands – about as far away from the sea as you can be in the country – to the home of Fairline Yachts to see exactly what goes into building some of the most technically advanced yachts in the world.

At the Oundle, Northamptonshire Fairline Yachts factory, they build everything in the range from the 33ft F-Line yachts right up to the Squadron 68 all built from the ground up across three separate factory buildings.

Going behind the scenes at the Fairline factory allows Jack to see how boats are built through every step of the process from the waxing of the moulds in the early stages of hull moulding and gel coat application, through to the layup of fibreglass and the resin infusion process.

Across the Fairline range, every boat is built with a liner. Though not a unique process for Fairline, not every manufacturer uses a liner in their construction. There are, essentially, two ways to make a boat. You can take the hull once it comes out of the mould and lay a flat, wooden floor into it and build the accommodation into the boat off that floor.

The other way of doing it is to have a liner. The liner is a structural part of the boat and provides significant rigidity into the hull itself.

The liner does limit what you can build in the interior of the boat, though, as you need to define where the bulkheads are going to go, where the rooms are going to go in the early design phase.

Once you have made that mould you are then committed to that layout. So it is a choice, essentially between customisation options and sea keeping and rigidity. We see this process in action and learn from Fairline just why they favour this technique as well as a great deal else about how to build a boat that is modern, luxurious and capable.

Owners manual service

Hy, i ordered the owners manual for my Targa 33 boat.I recieved it, on my email next day. The service from mr. Alex Neagus was excellent. He also helped me with my further questions. Everting was customer oriented. The only thing which im missing, is PAY-PAL payment. This should be implemented for fast checkout. Thank you!

UNNECESSARILY HIGH COST OF FREIGHT

main issue is the cost of freight, where freight can cost more than the part. Fairline quote during purchase to freight 250g from UK to Australia is GBP46. Royal Post with tracking is GBP11. Fairline should act in the interest of clients and find more economical ways of supplying non urgent parts as am sure boat owners would prefer to spend the money with Fairline that with freight companies.

Fairline Parts Customer Service

I wanted to smarten up my Fairline Squadron 58. I went to the Fairline Parts website and found what I needed from their comprehensive parts listing. I wanted a new helm wheel in time for our 2022 holiday cruise so I phone Fairline Parts to see if it was in stock. The gentleman I spoke to was very helpful and checked the stock during the call. I was lucky and got the last one on the shelf. The part arrived one day earlier than expected via DHL and was well packaged. I was updated with delivery information while the part was in transit. I am delighted with the new wheel. In summary, the part quality and customer service from Fairline Parts was excellent and I can certainly recommend them.

Freshwater pump ordered online

Product (F/W pump) arrived within a few days of ordering. Unfortunately, the wrong one had been picked from the warehouse, a 24v not 12v as ordered. Guys in parts department very helpful - emailed pre-paid returns label immediately and despatched correct pump the same day the incorrect one was received back. A little frustrating I lost a week due to the error but top marks for customer service to put it right! Would recommend them every time

I needed a special door lock for a…

I needed a special door lock for a Fairline, I had spent some considerable time trying to locate it myself, without any success. I contacted the parts team and Steve Kibble came back to me. what a great guy, with so much knowledge, he knew exactly which part I required & he got one for me. Although delivery is slow, you know you're getting the right parts for the job. Steve is a credit to Fairline.

Although the package was delivered in…

Although the package was delivered in what looked like new packaging, the items had been opened and repacked. On installation, the bilge pump would not pump, but just ran fast and the sump box overflowed. Teasing the float switch helped as occasionally the pump emptied the sump, but on the next occasion would just cycle and not pump. Disappointed, but changed the pump at further expense and all now working fine. Do these items end up on ebay when they have been found to not work properly? Who knows, but when a deal seems to good to be true, it usually is!

Part ordered and paid for including large delivery charge for speedy delivery No part has arrived yet Number not on website so cannot talk to anyone before order placed Once placed phone number is on e mailed receipt I phoned this number but not helpful AFTER TRUSTPILOT REPLY FROM FAIRLINE No indication of delivery on website order, in fact it invites EXPRESS delivery which to me implied they were in stock. So as I need them ASAP I paid express delivery, On the e mail confirming order there was no mention of items not being in stock, Thank you Trustpilot , I would not have known items out of stock without your post
