Rigging for Phantom Sailboat- Thread starter bullethead08
- Start date May 4, 2011
bullethead08Howdy, I'm looking for some information on the proper rigging for a Howmar Phantom Sailboat...think sunfish on steroids. Anything I can get would be very helpful. Thanks Seaman ApprenticeRe: Rigging for Phantom Sailboat I have one of these; seems to be rigged like a Sunfish. Short traveler bridle (with a ring on the line) runs from side to side thru holes in the aft deck (knots underneath). Mainsheet attaches to that bridle ring, through pulley at end of boom, through loop on boom, thru boom pulley over cockpit, and down and out thru the rotating mainsheet cleat. Mainsheet should be long enough to allow boom to swivel to point directly forward and still have line in cleat. Top spar has a halyard run up through slot in top of mast and down to bullseye on deck, and led to cleat. Line should be long enough to allow spar to lie on deck and still reach cleat. There is a downhaul line attached to mast ring on boom, this goes down to a loop on the mast (mast has to be slid into the boom ring top first, and then placed into the socket in the deck). I haven't found this downhaul to be very critical to performance; I belive I have a pulley on mine but seldom rig it for 2:1 purchase. A bungee cord from the top of the daggerboard to the handle on the bow; short enough to be under tension, is needed to hold the board up downwind and in shallow water. Hope this helps. Pretty simple rig. ![howmar 12 sailboat Wall eye](https://forums.iboats.com/data/avatars/m/266/266789.jpg?1602078948) Re: Rigging for Phantom Sailboat Not sure but have used this site several times http://sailingtexas.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=repairs&action=display&thread=182 bullethead08 said: Howdy, I'm looking for some information on the proper rigging for a Howmar Phantom Sailboat...think sunfish on steroids. Howmar Hauler 8 - Sailing DingyWith my recent sailboat purchase I acquired a Howmar Hauler 8, Sailing Dinghy. It is sound and will be an adequate dinghy, however, it is missing most of what is needed to sail. And as if I do not have enough to do with the larger boat, I would like to get the Dingy in sailing shape also. Does anyone have the specifications, drawings or some other info on the sizes, materials, etc of the: Rudder/Tiller Mast - most likely 2 pieces Sail - I found that it is 35 sf - so the dimension may be around 7' x 10' Boom and Gooseneck It seems Howmar, formerly of Edision, New Jersey, is out of business and I cannot seem to find the dimensions for these items on line. Thanks, ![howmar 12 sailboat](https://www.sailnet.com/d1/avatars/s/194/194435.jpg?1592288372) If you don't have any luck here, you might be able to get info from these folks: Harlem Yacht Club - Club Boat Program jimgo said: If you don't have any luck here, you might be able to get info from these folks: Harlem Yacht Club - Club Boat Program [/QAnyw Jimgo, HYC responded to my email by saying they could not provide drawings or dimensions, but if I am in the area I am welcome to come by and take measurements myself. Thanks anyway for the lead, they apparently have several of these dinghies rigged to sail. I have found a photo on line and have made an attempt to scale and created drawings with dimensions of the parts I need. If anyone out there wants these drawings you can come by and use my plans and draw them yourself.....just kidding. Really, if anyone out there is looking for dimensions for the CB/Seat, Rudder, Sail, Mast and Boom I would be more than happy to email what I came up with. They are about the right size and adapt fairly easily. You would likely lose the two part mast feature though. My Dyer Dhow Midget has about the same size sail. The sail is 10x7ft as you predicted: Dyer Midget Sailboat SailPlan Data and Sail Quoting System I could take good measurements of the sailing rig if you thought that would be helpful. It sounds like your boat is quite similar to my Midget. Sailritesails sells a kit sail for my DD Midget for under $200, or a completed sail for $350. ![howmar 12 sailboat](https://www.sailnet.com/d1/avatars/s/168/168425.jpg?1601139735) Here's a longshot for you to try. I have a Howmar Phantom. I'm not familiar with the Howmar Hauler, but maybe it shares some of the same parts with the Phantom. The Phantom has been reincarnated as the Pointer 14 and is manufactured by these guys . Since they might have purchased Howmar's molds and other assets, maybe they know something about the specs for the Hauler. It might be worth a phone call. Re: Howmar Hauler 8 - Sailing Dinghy Point Marine responded and they have information on three Howmar boats: Phathom, Howmar 12 and 15. They do not have the 8 though. Close, right? By the way I found that the Howmar 12 is a Sparkman and Stephens design. That one has tons of information out there. As for my progress I finished the scaled drawings and now can go shopping for substitutes or start making some of the pieces. We have a good Marine consignment store in Annapolis. It will be fun to rummage through their backroom knowing the approximate dimensions of the missing pieces. Thanks again for the suggestion. Thanks. I think I will make the sail using SailRite. I was able to scale a photo and I think I got most of the dimensions. Thanks for your suggestions. That stinks. I don't have a reason to be in New York or near City Island any time soon, or I'd offer to swing by and trace the shape of the rudder onto some paper for you. I wonder if there's anyone else in the area who might be able to stop by. BTW, I really like your "big" boat - those Contests are very nice! There was a guy selling one in NJ last fall, and it was always JUST outside my budget. Then, when I finally had the money for it, it had been sold. Oh well! ![howmar 12 sailboat](https://www.sailnet.com/d1/avatars/s/145/145551.jpg?1592288370) If it were me, I would keep it simple, and just find a used sunfish (or other dinghy) rig. Then you would have mast, boom, sail, and rigging without having to gather all of the parts. OTOH, if you want a project, go for it. Re: Howmar Hauler 8 - Sailing Dinghy BTW, I really like your "big" boat - those Contests are very nice! There was a guy selling one in NJ last fall, and it was always JUST outside my budget. Then, when I finally had the money for it, it had been sold. Oh well![/QUOTE] If you are ever in the Middle River area let me know and if I am down there, we can take her out for a sail. We have enjoyed learning about her and sailing on most weekends during the season. Still needs some cosmetic fixes but appears to be sound. That would be great, thanks! Re: Howmar Hauler 8 - Sailing Dinghy Here are the estimated measurements that I came up with for the Sail, Mast, Boom, Rudder and CB/Seat. If anyone that has these items sees a mistake, post it here and I will make the corrections. I found a Howmar 12 in rough shape. I've been cleaning and patching the hull and so far it looks like it'll be able to float. Only problem is I'm missing a rudder, mast, boom, sails, and rigging. It's my understanding that only 200 of these were built so I'm thinking I might not have a lot of luck finding these.
just looking for general thoughts on the boat. Well, it was designed by Sparkman & Stephens, which is the most reputable yacht design firm of the 20th century, so that's certainly a plus. It will be a HUGE improvement over your Snark, which is basically a beer cooler that's shaped like a boat. Haha, yea the Snark isn't exactly setting the world ...

The Phantom 14 gudgeon has an inside dimension of about 3 5/16 inches. That means that it is a full 1/2 inch smaller even without the washers.
