24 sailors compete in 2023 BVI Dinghy Championships

With many sailors competing in their first-ever regatta, there was a buzz of excitement with a smattering of nerves as boats were rigged and sailors gathered for a briefing. The race course was set in the Sir Francis Drake Channel with the ILCA’s and RS Fevas set to race a triangular course, the Optis a windward leeward course and the Foilers figured it out on the fly!

'Green fleet'

The six Optimists, skippered by sailors aged between 8 and 13 sailed a total of 7 races. Three different sailors, Lochlan Geyser, Piper Bailey and James Davis all claimed race wins with Dots Knight, Jake Richardson and Phoenix Steer all finishing races in a top three position. All of these young sailors are ‘green fleet’ which means they are new to racing and have been building their skills in their after-school sailing classes. Racing in a regatta is a major achievement for all of them and every race was another chance to learn something new.

Other members of the youth sailing programme were competing in the RS Feva class which saw a mixture of adults and youngsters. The only youth team, Aerin Westlake and Maggie Nolan, put in a fantastic performance to finish in third place. Rhiannon Davis, sailing with son Ioan, finished in second overall with 13-year-old Mia Armstrong, with mum Cate as crew, claiming a clean sweep of first-place finishes to take the title.

Adults get in on the action

According to a press release from the Royal BVi Yacht Club, it was not just about learning to race for the young sailors as members of the adult training courses also took to the race course for the first time.

Grainne Hussey and Katie Harby finished fourth place in the Feva class taking onboard some interesting memories and identifying skills to work on!

Marentia de Villiers wins ILCA4 

In the ILCA4 (Laser 4.7) fleet Marentia de Villiers won the first three races and finished second in the fourth to take the title ahead of Bijorn Bullock.

Bijorn, another sailor racing in his first regatta, clinched the win in race 4 and second place in races 1 and 3 was enough for him to finish second overall.

Third place went to Hoss Moghimi.

Samuel Allen sweeps ILCA7 Class

The ILCA7 (Laser) class sadly had only two entries and taking a clean sweep of race wins, Samuel Allen was the overall winner. Aaron Gardner finished in second place.  

Many of the ‘usual suspects’ in the Laser fleets have taken up wing foiling so a foiling event was added to the Championships in 2022.

With conditions a little too light for several of the expected entrants, it came down to a showdown between last year’s podium finishes once again. With three races sailed, wins in the first two were enough for Rusty Henderson to take first overall. Colin Rathbun finished in second place and Chris Haycraft in third.

The Royal BVI Yacht Club extended special appreciation to its partners Nanny Cay and Nagico.

Le Cabanon Restaurant Opens at the Royal BVI Yacht Club!

BVI Traveller just received exciting news from Tamsin Rand, Club Manager, at the Royal BVI Yacht Club. She reported, “The Yacht Club’s building suffered, like so many, major damage in 2017 but we have finally rebuilt and it’s looking great.” She went on to say that, “We also have a new restaurant at the club. Le Cabanon has moved its restaurant to a new location at the Royal BVI Yacht Club in the Road Reef Marina on Tortola.”

Serving international cuisine exquisitely prepared by Chef Sebastien, the restaurant is open Monday to Saturday (closed Sunday) for both lunch and dinner.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■
