The weather in Northern California is famously mild, and sailing hazards such as hurricanes are non-existent. Thunderstorms are also extremely rare, which means you're not likely to get caught in a sudden downpour. However, local sailors say that the wind tends to pick up in the afternoon, and you're likely to encounter whitecaps in most parts of the bay.

San Francisco Sailing Culture San Francisco has an extremely strong local sailing culture that's comparable to Cape Cod (but a little rougher around the edges). Sailboats are almost a guaranteed sight on the bay, and the water is practically overrun with sailing craft during the summer.

This includes facilities such as boatyards, fiberglass repair shops, marine supply stores, and sailmakers. Virtually anything you need for your sailboat is stocked locally, and there's a vast amount of local expertise on sailing and boat repair.

Qualities of the Best San Francisco Marinas

So, what are the qualities of the best sailing marinas ? There are a few important factors to consider when choosing a place in the city to moor your sailboat.

The fruit and most obvious thing to consider is location. Most of San Francisco borders the water, so it's tough to find a bad location for a marina. That said, there are still a few rough industrial areas that are technically within city limits, so it's essential to vet the surrounding neighborhood to avoid ending up in a rough part of town.

For example, this is especially important if you don't want to end up moored under a freeway or next to an ore barge.

The second factor to consider is the overall condition of the marina and its facilities. Is it well-kept, or is it filled with rotted docks and rusty nails? Also, how do the facilities look? A marina with fresh paint, safe docks, and nice buildings is a sign that it's run by a professional staff.

Also, don't forget to take a look at the boats there too. The best San Francisco marinas are free from filthy derelict boats, which means it's occupied by thoughtful people who act responsibly and treat their boats with respect.

Other things to expect at the best local marinas include utility hookups for electricity and water, fuel docks, pumping stations for sewage, and (ideally) a large boat crane for hauling-out. If you live aboard, high-speed Internet is a must. The best marinas in San Francisco usually offer WiFi and other connectivity, usually free of charge.

Are San Francisco Marinas Expensive?

Yes, San Francisco marinas are very costly. A combination of prime location and limited slip availability make it very expensive to dock your boat in the city. For lower costs, consider mooring somewhere down the Peninsula, in the East Bay, or somewhere in the Sacramento River Delta.

Both of these locations are either on the bay itself or connected to it via navigable waterways, so you'll still be able to sail to San Francisco with ease.

We interviewed local sailboat owners and compiled reviews to find the best yacht clubs and marinas in the City of San Francisco. Here's what we found and the perks of the top five San Francisco sailboat mooring locations.

1. St. Francis Yacht Club

The St. Francis Yacht Club is one of the world's most prestigious sailing clubs. It was founded in 1927 by local yacht owners as an outgrowth of the Historic San Francisco Yacht Club, which we'll go over later in the article. The St. Francis Yacht Club is well known in the area for its sailboat racing regattas, which are held from March until November.

One of the most famous regattas hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club is the Rolex Big Boat Series. This regatta includes hundreds of boats of all sizes, and usually takes place in the middle of September.

St. Francis Yacht Club also offers a little-known perk that's a favorite of its members. The club has its own private island in the delta, which is about 60 miles upriver from the club's San Francisco Bay location. Members can take a trip to the island and enjoy 40 acres of luxurious accommodations far from the bustling city.

The docks at St. Francis Yacht Club are open to members and visitors, though reservations are required to secure a spot. Local experts say that St. Francis is one of the busier sailing spots in the city, so it's best to plan ahead and make a reservation as far out as possible.

St. Francis Yacht Club is located at 700 Marina Boulevard in San Francisco. The club is situated between the northern edge of Fisherman's Wharf and Chrissy Field, which is a prime location with views of the city, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

St. Francis Yacht Club is prestigious and oriented towards those with a deep appreciation for the sport of sailing. It's also a great place to hang out with like-minded sailing enthusiasts. It's also family-friendly, despite being known primarily as a classy social club for boat owners.

The fit and finish of the clubhouse, docks, and the boats that occupy them is extremely high, and it's about as good as it gets in the Pacific region.

2. San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor

On the other end of the atmosphere spectrum, the San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor is a well-kept and convenient place to moor your sailboat. The harbor itself is in an excellent location, and it's a great central spot to begin a sailing trip.

The origins of the San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor date back to before the 1906 earthquake when fishing and utility boats moored in the area. The marina has since been completely revamped, and now the facilities are comparable to any modern sailboat and powerboat marina.

The San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor is known locally as a great place to tie up during the day. It has lots of amenities, including standard utility hookups and a free pump-out station for sewage.

The marina features its own small park, which is a popular local hang out spot. The marina can accommodate vessels from less than 20 feet to about 90 feet overall, which means virtually all private boats can utilize the docks.

The San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor isn't a private yacht club. The marina is operated by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, which does a very good job at keeping the waterfront safe, accessible, and tidy.

Berthing is affordable, ranging between $10.30 and $18.32 per foot in 2021. The guest dock is also affordable, with prices ranging from $2.00 to $4.00 per foot per night. The guest dock has a 30-day stay limit, and seasonal rates are also available. All things considered, staying aboard and mooring at this marina can be significantly cheaper than staying at a hotel in the same part of the city.

Due to the popularity of this marina, there's almost always a waitlist to acquire your own slip. Some individuals get priority, which is granted by the Parks Department. If you don't want to wait, you can arrange a slip transfer with someone who has one, or you can purchase a local boat that's already in a slip at the marina. However, this is costly, and you have to be on the waitlist to accept the rights to the slip.

The San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor has some of the best real estate in the city, and it's essentially the perfect spot to moor your boat if you're lucky enough to get a slip there. In the meantime, it's also one of the most affordable spots to tie up in the Fisherman's Wharf area.

3. Treasure Isle Marina

Treasure Isle Marina is located on the former U.S. Navy base in the center of San Francisco Bay. Treasure Island itself is a short ride from downtown San Francisco via the Bay Bridge, and the harbor is the perfect central location to begin a sailing day trip.

Treasure Island is somewhat of a local secret. It's free from the noise and traffic of the city despite being within sight of downtown. The Island itself is grassy and pleasant, and there's a clean and quiet beach within walking distance of the Treasure Isle Marina docks.

The marina is home to the Treasure Island Yacht Club, though not all boaters who dock there are members. Even non-members at the Treasure Isle Marina have access to excellent amenities. These include all standard utility hookups, showers, restrooms, and a nice little cafe.

The marina stated that it plans to add additional amenities. The plans include laundry facilities, a fuel dock, in-house boat repair services, and dry storage facilities. Treasure Island Marina (also known as Treasure Island Yacht Harbor) is an Almar marina, which means it's managed by a company that also operates several other marinas around California.

Treasure Island Yacht Harbor has an anchoring cove, which is a safe and convenient spot to drop anchor. The location is a popular day sailing destination, especially during events like regattas or Fleet Week. The marina itself has pretty much everything you need at the guest docks, and it's a great place to rent a slip long-term.

Rates at Treasure Island Yacht Harbor are competitive, and it's easier to get a slip there than in the heart of the city.

4. San Francisco Yacht Club

San Francisco Yacht Club seems like an obvious choice, but it's not actually located in San Francisco. This historic and highly-respected establishment is located in Tiburon, which is just north of San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge.

This yacht club features modern amenities and a beautiful historic clubhouse with an excellent view of San Francisco Bay and the surrounding area. The San Francisco Yacht club is the oldest yacht club in the region. It was founded in 1869 and relocated to its current location in Tiburon in 1926. The current configuration was completed in 1957, and the entire premises were remodeled between 2007 and 2016.

In terms of atmosphere, the San Francisco Yacht Club is comparable to the St. Francis Yacht Club. But due to its location, many people find that events are easier to get to. Tiburon is a quiet community with minimal traffic, so members of the San Francisco Yacht Club are often more likely to show up to the clubhouse regularly for drinks or dinner.

The San Francisco Yacht Club is a bayside compound with multiple buildings. These include the main clubhouse, the Cove House, and the big lawn. The club hosts events such as Super Bowl Sunday on the lawn, which is always a hit with members.

The San Francisco Yacht Club hosts youth sailing lessons and race teams, which are popular with local families. Sailing is a surprisingly normal activity for people who live in Tiburon, thanks in part to the influence of the San Francisco Yacht Club. The club also hosts high school sailing teams and events.

The docks and facilities at the San Francisco Yacht Club are top-of-the-line, and members have access to utilities. The club has 185 slips for vessels between 24 and 52 feet in length. There is usually a waiting list to join the club and get a slip, so it's best to do it as soon as possible.

Guest boats are welcome at the guest dock, though only if they're members of reciprocal yacht clubs. The San Francisco Yacht Club is a stickler about the rules (and rightfully so), and it's definitely not a 'shirts and shoes off' kind of place. If you plan on visiting the San Francisco Yacht Club, make sure you review the rules and get your paperwork in order before arriving.

5. South Beach Harbor Marina

South Beach Harbor Marina is one of the largest marinas in San Francisco. It lies adjacent to AT&T Park, which is home to the San Francisco Giants baseball team. The marina is a popular gathering point for sports fans who sail into the channel during games to fish out foul balls.

In terms of size, the South Beach Harbor Marina dwarfs others in the area. This marina has 700 slips and a massive 640-foot guest dock. South Beach Harbor Marina is a public facility that's owned and operated by the Port of San Francisco. It's affordable and known for being a friendly and laid-back environment.

This isn't an 'anything goes' marina by any means, but it's a lot closer to that on the atmosphere spectrum than the San Francisco Yacht Club. The environment of the South Beach Harbor Marina is comparable to the San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor. Cost is comparable as well, which means that the South Beach Harbor Marina is one of the more affordable options in the city.

Demand for slips at South Beach Harbor Marina is high. If you want to get a slip, you'll have to take a number and hang out on the waiting list for a while.

The process works somewhat differently than the San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor, as these marinas are run by two different city government agencies. To get on the waitlist, you'll need to contact the Port of San Francisco and fill out an application.

Overall, the South Beach Harbor Marina is a great place to keep your boat if you enjoy sailing from a central location in the city. It's a huge marina with all utilities you'd expect, making it a convenient choice as well.

Costs aren't comparatively outrageous, and most of the members are just regular people who like boats and sailing with friends and family. It's a fun place to get together with friends, work on your boat, and begin sailing trips.

San Francisco Yacht Club

The San Francisco Yacht Club and its members are dedicated to promoting and celebrating yachting and life on the water. Founded in 1869, The SFYC is the oldest yacht club west of the Mississippi River in North America. Originally located at San Francisco’s China Basin near Mission Rock, The Club moved to its current site in tranquil Belvedere Cove in 1937, after a short time in Sausalito. With its sublime setting, superb harbor and stunning views of the San Francisco skyline, it's widely recognized as a premier yachting facility and one of the finest anchorages in the Bay Area. It operates a year-round facility including the harbor, a dry-sail area, a full-service restaurant and bar. The SFYC has earned recognition as one of the leading yacht clubs in the country, hosting local, national and international regattas. Regattas range from the The Belvedere Classic to an active youth sailing and race team program. Committed to promoting the sport and Corinthian spirit of sailing, The Club also offers sailing instruction for sailors of all ages. Club fleets include J/24s, Optimists, 420s, Lasers and Flying Juniors. SFYC's youth sailors have risen to compete at national, international and Olympic levels. The Club serves its active and diverse membership community through a variety of programs, as well as formal and informal social events.

In the summer of 1869, a group of active, local yachtsmen formed the San Francisco Yacht Club – the first yacht club west of the Mississippi – to create a more orderly and monitored form of conduct, and ensure that Bay Area racing was respected elsewhere. Almost 150 years later, the SFYC has grown into an internationally renowned club. The original anchorage and clubhouse were located in San Francisco, near Mission Rock, but inadequate depth of water and increasing industrial growth in the area resulted in a move to Sausalito. Waterfront property was purchased and a new clubhouse erected, but it was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1897. The rebuilt building is still standing and now houses a restaurant, currently called Trident. Increasing ferry traffic and congestion contributed to a decision to relocate in 1926. One group, headed by Commodore Clifford Smith, felt that Belvedere Cove would be an ideal location. Another group felt that the Club should move back to San Francisco and lease land from the city on the Marina. After considerable discussion, the Belvedere site was finally selected. Those who opposed the move resigned and formed the St. Francis Yacht Club. A small clubhouse on the Belvedere site was completed in 1934 and is still part of the present building. Planning for the present 190-berth harbor was begun in 1933 and completed in 1957 when funds were available. The Club's exterior and interior were completely remodeled in 2007. In 2016, The Club received approval from the Belvedere Planning Commission to begin construction of a new Regatta Center, which will take the place of the Cove House at the northwest end of The Club property.

Known as a sailing mecca the world over, San Francisco is home to hundreds of sailing events every year. From community boat parades and regattas to the latest innovations in the yacht racing world, you can see it on the Bay. Check out this list and mark your calendars to experience these sensational events that bring the local sailing community together on land or onto the Bay. Some of these event dates are "TBD" (to be determined), but we will continually update this page as event dates are announced.

Three Bridge Fiasco - Saturday, January 27, 2024

The Three Bridge Fiasco hosted by the Single-Handed Sailing Society takes place right outside of the St. Francis Yacht Club . Racers compete single- or double-handed to round three buoys or temporary marks representing the three major bridges of the San Francisco Bay; the Golden Gate Bridge, East Bay Bridge, and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. This race is an annual event regularly attracting more than 300 yachts and teams from all over the Bay Area.

Opening Day on the Bay - Sunday, April 28

Celebrate the official beginning to the San Francisco Bay sailing season with fellow sailing enthusiasts! 2024 marks the 107th annual celebration kicking off the start of the boating season in the Bay Area. From the blessing of the fleet in Racoon Straits to the parade of decorated boats, Opening Day on the Bay is one of the premier sailing events of the year. Dating back to 1917 and organized by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association , the parade sails from the shadows of the Golden Gate Bridge to just past Pier 39. Any vessels can take part as long as they register beforehand. The procession regularly features tug boats, clean-up boats and tour boats, with visitors and spectators onboard. Judges are on hand to dish out prizes for the décor and imagination of the colorful vessels.

Enjoy late summer nights and the smooth tunes of jazz on land or from the water. Hosted by Sausalito Parks and Recreation, Jazz and Blues by the Bay is a community event focused on park enjoyment and music appreciation. During the summer, these weekly Friday night concerts occur in Gabrielson Park overlooking Richardson Bay and the Sausalito Yacht Club mooring balls. Master Mariner's Wooden Boat Show at Corinthian Yacht Club - June 23

The Annual Wooden Boat Show is one of the highlights of the San Francisco sailing season, and one of only a few West coast wooden boat shows.

SailGP San Francisco (F50 foiling catamaran races) - July 13 - 14

There are a few ways to witness the exciting action of F50 foiling catamarans zipping and splashing around the Central Bay: (1) watch the race from shore by buying tickets from SailGP . Modern Sailing club members can (2) charter a boat or (3) join a Club Sail to watch from the water. This year we are having two SailGP Club Sail spectator boats heading out from Sausalito and Berkeley each day of this event!

Rolex Big Boat Series and J/88 Nationals - September TBD

The Rolex Big Boat Series is a four-day regatta founded by the St. Francis Yacht Club in 1964. The annual event attracts competitive racing teams and big racing boats from all over the state, nation, and world. Thousands of racers and hundreds of boats take to the Bay each day of the race, competing for first place and the Rolex watch that comes with it. MSC club members can bareboat charter or join a Club Sail to witness the excitement from the water.

Island Yacht Club Women's Sailing Seminar - September TBD

IYC's 3 days of sailing, learning and fun includes in-person and streaming seminars and keynote speeches, food, drink, and no-host cocktail hours, giveaways including t-shirts and totes, and an amazing raffle drawing! Stay tuned for more details as we approach September.

Fleet Week - October 2 - 8

The grand finale to summer in San Francisco, Fleet Week, celebrates the United States Navy allowing civilians to tour warships while their sailors tour the city. The week begins with a parade of ships progressing to free concerts, educational events, and family fun. Fleet Week's grand finale is a two-day air show over the Bay featuring the Blue Angels of the United States Airforce, the F-35 Demo Team, a demo from United's largest airplane, and several internationally known performance flight teams. The best seat in the house for these shows is from a boat on the Bay - keep an eye out for our Club Sails that weekend.

Sausalito Lighted Boat Parade - December 7

Spark the spirit of the season with holiday lights, music and fireworks on the water! This special event is a holiday tradition in Sausalito and across the Bay Area. Every year, we enter two of our club boats in the parade and our hard-working fleet staff decorate them for our members and guests to participate in this magical experience. With the sounds of holiday music and cheering spectators, you and your guests will be dazzled by the spectacle of decorated boats and fireworks. An enchanting and memorable event to kick off the season, even the grinchiest of sailors will be unable to resist the holiday cheer.

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.

Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.

I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.

I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.

It’s been a busy year for luxury real estate sales at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club.

The gated golf community is Boca Raton’s most expensive neighborhood, and the epicenter of the city’s luxury market. Spanning 450 acres and fewer than 700 homes, the community includes a private club by the same name with a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and a marina. Its 24/7 armed security patrol is particularly popular with the well-heeled set.

Waterfront spec mansions in Royal Palm have repeatedly broken price records in recent years. Boca Raton has other luxury gated communities, like the Sanctuary, where software mogul Oleg Movchan sold an estate for $29 million in February. But none has the same pull as Royal Palm, and none has seen as many eight-figure deals this year.

Part of the phenomenon, agents say, is that South Florida’s luxury buyers have an insatiable appetite for spec mansions, and Royal Palm has plenty to offer.

“It’s become a great playground for investors, developers [and builders],” said Carmen D’Angelo, a broker and co-owner of Premier Estate Properties. Luxury buyers don’t have the time or patience for the homebuilding process, he said. “People come to Florida, and they want instant gratification.”

The most prolific spec developers in Royal Palm are brothers Steve and Scott Dingle , the owners of SRD Building. The Dingles have carved a niche for themselves churning out mansions for Royal Palm buyers. Their longtime partner and agent, David Roberts of Royal Palm Properties, has also made selling homes in the gated community his specialty. It’s turned out to be a lucrative one: Roberts ranked as the top agent in The Real Deal’s 2023 Palm Beach County broker ranking , with $349.8 million in on-market deals closed.

Roberts, who has been an agent at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club for nearly 40 years, said much of his business is from people moving within the community, but buyers also frequently come from the Northeast, Illinois and California. One thing they all have in common: They have cash to spend.

“I’ve never sold a house to a lottery winner,” he said in a previous interview. “Our folks have done well.”

$36M | 2499 East Maya Palm Drive | Seller: Randy Parker

Randy Parker, founder of email marketing giant Constant Contact, set a price record for Boca Raton in May when he sold his longtime family home –– a teardown –– for $36 million . Parker and his siblings, Robin Parker and Suzanne Maddux, sold the waterfront mansion at 2499 East Maya Palm Drive to the Dingles, who are planning a luxury spec project on the 1.7-acre site. The current compound has a 9,500-square-foot mansion, a guest house, two pools and 440 feet of waterfront, according to the listing.

$28.5m | 360 east alexander palm road | seller: a trust .

Earlier this month, a trust named for the address sold a spec mansion at 360 East Alexander Palm Road built by the Dingles for $28.5 million , records show. Another trust, also named for the address, bought the home. The true buyer and seller are hidden. The Dingles completed the half-acre, 10,700-square-foot mansion earlier this year. The waterfront home has seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, three half-bathrooms, a pool and a dock.

Joe Liguori of Premier Estate Properties brought the buyer, and Roberts had the listing.

$28.5M | 444 East Alexander Palm Road | Seller: Mikhail Avrutin

Hotelier Mikhail Avrutin sold the waterfront spec mansion at 444 East Alexander Palm Road for $28.5 million in April. A trust named for the address bought the 9,900-square-foot mansion, which was completed last year, records show. Built on 0.3 acres, it has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, one half-bathroom, a pool and a dock, according to property records. Avrutin bought the site for $5.5 million in 2020.

Adam Elmer and Marie Mangouta of Fortune Christie’s International Real Estate represented both sides of the deal.

$26.5M | 480 East Alexander Palm Road | Seller: A trust

A trust sold the waterfront spec mansion built by the Dingles at 480 East Alexander Palm Road for $26.5 million in April. Records show a trust sold the home to another trust, with both the buyer and seller hidden. SRD Building completed the 8,900-square-foot, six-bedroom, seven-bathroom mansion earlier this year, records show. The 0.4-acre property includes a pool, a dock, two half-bathrooms, a four-car-plus golf cart garage, and 104 feet of waterfront.

Roberts had the listing, and Ina Bloom of Compass brought the buyer.

$25.9M | 415 East Alexander Palm Road | Seller: G. Robert Sheetz

In March, the founder of the Sheetz convenience store chain sold a waterfront spec mansion for $25.9 million. G. Robert Sheetz sold the house at 415 East Alexander Palm Road to a trust, records show. The true buyer is unknown. Sheetz dropped $4.5 million on the half-acre property in 2019, and completed the 10,700-square-foot waterfront mansion last year, according to property records. The mansion has six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, one half-bathroom, a pool, a dock and a 900-bottle wine room.

Roberts represented both sides of the deal.

In order to publish obituaries a name and phone number of funeral home/cremation society is required. We must contact the funeral home/cremation society handling the arrangements during their business hours to verify the death. If the body of the deceased has been donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program, or a similar program, their phone number is required for verification.

Please allow enough time to contact them especially during their limited weekend hours.

A death certificate is also acceptable for this purpose but only one of these two options are necessary.

We are not allowed to reference other media sources with a guestbook or an obituary placed elsewhere when placing an obituary in print and online. We may place a website for a funeral home or a family email for contact instead; contact us with any questions regarding this matter.

Once your submission is completed, we will fax or email a proof for review prior to publication in the newspaper. This proof includes price and days the notice is scheduled to appear.

Music and concerts, music and concerts | what to know if you’re headed to the minnesota yacht club festival, gwen stefani, alanis morissette and red hot chili peppers are headlining.

For the first time in a dozen years, St. Paul’s Harriet Island Regional Park will host a major rock and pop music festival, dubbed the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, on Friday and Saturday.

Headlined by Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the festival (which despite its name has nothing to do with yacht rock) is promoted by C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. C3 was the largest independent promoter in the world until Live Nation bought a controlling stake in the company in 2014.

Organizers expect to attract more than 30,000 concertgoers each day.

While the Irish Fair of Minnesota calls Harriet Island home each August, music festivals have had a rough go on the site. The original Lollapalooza (back when it was a traveling festival) landed on the site in 1991, 1992 and 1994, but flooding forced the fest to move to the late St. Paul Civic Center in 1993.

Live Nation attempted to establish a new annual event, the River’s Edge Music Festival, in 2012. Despite big-name headliners Tool and the Dave Matthews Band, the festival didn’t attract enough paying customers to convince the concert promoting giant to return for a second year.

Here’s what folks headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival need to know:

As of Wednesday afternoon, tickets were still available at a number of price points, starting at $135 for one day general admission (or $255 for two days) all the way up to platinum tickets for $925 ($1,395 for two days), which include a number of perks including free food and drinks, front-of-stage viewing and access to an air-conditioned lounge. Many of the general admission and general admission plus tickets are sold out, but there are verified resale tickets available, some at lower prices than face value.

Getting there

There are two entrances to the festival. The main entrance is at Harriet Island Boulevard and South Wabasha Street, while the west entrance is on West Water Street between Bidwell Street and Plato Boulevard.

There is no on-site parking at the festival, but its website lists numerous downtown St. Paul parking lots that are a 10- to 16-minute walk from the site. Several Metro Transit buses stop a half-mile from Harriet Island. The rideshare drop off is at 49 E. Fillmore Ave. The festival promises “ample bike parking” located near the two entrances.

What is allowed on site

Feel free to bring: Small clutch purses and fanny packs (6” x 9” or smaller) with no more than one pocket, all other bags must be clear and smaller than 12” x 6” x 12”, empty hydration packs and reusable water bottles, strollers, frisbees, binoculars, blankets, basic cameras (no detachable lenses or other accessories), sunscreen in non-aerosol containers (3.4 ounces or less), personal-sized hand sanitizer and factory sealed Naloxone/Narcan kits.

What isn’t allowed

Pretty much everything you would think, including outside food and beverage, coolers, aerosol containers, umbrellas, chairs, wagons, skateboards, drones, fireworks and illegal substances.

Concertgoers must wear securely fastened wristbands that are available at the box office. Wristbands can be activated online to add an emergency contact and to use for cashless transactions (with a pin number). Wristbands that are damaged, lost or stolen can be replaced by the original purchaser one time only for $20. Patrons can leave and reenter at will up until 7 p.m. each day.

There is a guest services tent that has earplugs and a lost and found. Free hydration stations are located throughout the site. Lockers are available to rent for $25 each day or $48.50 for both.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. There are two stages, with staggered performances that do not overlap.

Friday’s schedule includes: Gully Boys (1-2 p.m.), Harbor and Home (2-2:40 p.m.), Morgan Wade (2:40-3:40), Michigander (3:40-4:40), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (4:40-5:40), Durry (5:40-6:40), Gwen Stefani (6:45-8), The Head and the Heart (8-9) and Alanis Morissette (9-10:30).

World’s Best Bar: Colombia’s Alquímico Wins Top Honor At The 2024 Spirited Awards

A lquímico, the groundbreaking Cartagena cocktail lounge renowned for its farm-to-bar concept, was named World’s Best Bar at the 18th annual Spirited Awards in New Orleans. Founded in 2016 by Jean Trinh, Alquímico began life on the first floor of a colonial mansion in Cartagena’s historic district. Two years later, the French-Vietnamese Trinh bought a 25-acre farm in Filandia, Colombia’s lush coffee region, to supply the high-volume bar with fresh, organic ingredients. And when pandemic lockdowns forced Alquímico to close in 2020, the farm became a lifeline for Trinh’s staff and their families until the bar could reopen.

Alquímico survived the pandemic and true to its name (which means alchemy in Portuguese), it re-emerged transformed. Today, the bar occupies three floors of that same mansion and pays tribute to the various agricultural regions of Colombia. In 2023, Alquímico was awarded Best International Bar Team at the the Spirited Awards , and this year it won for Best International Bar as well as the top prize of the evening, World’s Best Bar. Accepting the award before a standing ovation at The Fillmore theater, Trinh, the consummate hospitality professional, invited the crowd to Alquímico. “Cartagena is very nearby,” he said, “and we still have a spot on my plane. So please visit us. I promise we will take care of you.”

If Alquímico’s history is any indication, Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy, which opened in 2021, can also look forward to a good run at the Spirited Awards. This year it won three major prizes—Best International Bar Team, Best Bar Menu and International Bartender of the Year for its charismatic bar director and co-owner Eric van Beek.

Hong Kong’s Bar Leone was named Best New International Cocktail Bar and BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons Bangkok won the Spirited Award for the Best International Hotel Bar.

On the domestic front, Allegory in Washington, D.C. took home two big awards. It won a Spirited Award as the Best U.S. Hotel Bar and Kapri Johnson was named U.S. Bartender of the Year. Denver’s Yacht Club, which was a finalist for Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar in 2022, fulfilled its promise and was named Best U.S. Cocktail Bar.

Local New Orleans gem, Jewel of the South, which won best U.S. Restaurant Bar in 2022, was honored as the Best U.S. Bar Team. This year’s Best U.S. Restaurant Bar went to Cleaver in Las Vegas, while New York’s Superbueno was named Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar.

Mentorship has always been a crucial part of the hospitality industry and the Spirited Awards honors two mentors each year. Danil Nevsky , founder of Indie Bartender, which helps independent mixologists develop a business plan and strategy for their brands, was named International Bar Mentor of the year.

“I've been an immigrant six times in my life and I have found I've found a family in this industry,” he said in his acceptance speech. “I want to say thank you to Scotland, the family that raised me—that's where I learned hospitality. I want to say thank you to the Netherlands, where I matured. I want to say thank you to Spain who has become my adoptive parents. And most recently, I would like to say thank you to the U.S., where for the last 12 months, I finally traveled here and discovered how amazing your country is.”

In one of the most powerful moments of the evening, Alex Jump , a 2020 nominee for U.S. Bartender of the Year and a member of the Forbes 30 Under 30 class of 2021, won for U.S. Bar Mentor. In a moving speech about so how many in the hospitality industry are privately in pain.

“What is the point of being the best if being the best is killing us?” Jump asked the crowd. “Our industry is filled with the most passionate, talented, coolest, unique, thoughtful people on the planet. Yet they are suffering, for the most part, in silence. We focus our careers on taking care of other people. And yet somehow we believe that our needs are not worthy of that same care.”

In the writing and media categories, Adaorah Uduah’s deep dive into how colonialism in Nigeria prohibited the production and sale of the indigenous spirit ògógóró in the early 20th century won for Best Cocktail and Spirits Writing . Uduah’s article looks at how Since Time of John the Baptist, a new ògógóró, offers an opportunity for reparations.

Toni Tipton-Martin’s Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs and Juice , which traces the history of two centuries of cocktails in African American cookbooks, was named Best New Book on Drinks Culture, History, or Spirits.

And The Ice Book was named Best New Cocktail or Bartending Book. Written by ice-pert Camper English, the book is a cool compendium of tips and techniques for shaking up a cocktail repertoire—everything from how to create a frozen bowl for Negroni punch to infusing ice cubes (or spheres) with vibrant colors and flavors.

High Five High: Hidetsugu Ueno, the legendary bartender-own of Tokyo's Bar High Five, won the Helen David Lifetime Achievement Award.

Among the highlights every year at the Spirited Awards, which are voted on by a panel of more than 250 hospitality professionals and journalists, are the categories that honor legendary bars, bartenders and mentors.

AndHidetsugu Ueno, the acclaimed owner and bartender of Bar High Five in Tokyo, was presented with the Helen David Lifetime Achievement Award. A 2016 winner for International Bartender of the Year (among countless other awards for his bartending skills), Ueno has long been an ambassador for the Japanese style of cocktail making. He is also a skilled ice carver, renowned for his signature diamond-shaped ice.

And this year’s Tales Visionary Award went to Colin Asare-Appiah, a 2016 Spirited Award winner for Best American Brand Ambassador who has spent more than three decades in the industry. The author of Black Mixcellence: A Comprehensive Guide to Black Mixology, he is a member of the Bacardi USA team and helps train the next generation of bartenders in the United States and throughout Africa as part of the AJABU Cocktail and Spirits Festival.

“The next visionary could be any one of you—and I hope it is,” he said as he accepted the award. “It can be someone that's watching on the livestream right now. And our stories should never be about us, without us. I strongly believe that. It takes a community to truly bring one's vision to life. You've got to allow other people to be a part of that success.”

Then, waving a bandana printed with his signature phrase, he implored the audience to join him in shouting, “Get involved, Bruv!”

Finally, the Spirited Awards always raise a glass to some classic watering holes. London’s pioneering Café Pacifico in Covent Garden was presented with the Timeless International Award. Café Pacifico introduced Mexican food and spirits to the UK when it first opened in 1982 and has been educating bartenders across Europe about agave culture ever since.

And San Francisco’s historic Buena Vista Café, which opened its doors in 1916, was honored with the Timeless U.S. Award. Located on Fisherman’s Wharf, the Buena Vista Café introduced Irish coffee to America in 1952. More than 70 years later, the bar now serves upwards of 2,000 Irish coffees a day.

At the end of the ceremony, a group of winners was huddled—where else?— by the bar. With their arms around each other, one exclaimed, “Let’s go out and get weird!”
