The Catamaran Island Hotel is set on an island just outside the town Río Dulce. The hotel has bungalows that extend over the river and a very tranquil atmosphere.

The Río Dulce begins at Lake Izabal and empties into the Caribbean Sea near the town of Lívingston. There are many places to explore along the river, much of which falls within the bounds of the Río Dulce National Park. La Cueva de La Vaca is a dramatic canyon lined with hundred-meter rock faces, and there are several good places to swim and relax. Manatees can sometimes be seen at the Chocón Machacas Biotope.

The Catamaran Island Hotel is set on a small island on the Río Dulce. The hotel’s grounds are lovely and are landscaped with a variety of tropical plants. The atmosphere here is quiet and the hotel feels secluded. Even so, it’s easy to take a boat from the hotel to other attractions within the Río Dulce area.

The hotel has 36 air-conditioned bungalows, most of which are set over the water and have beautiful views of the Río Dulce. The bungalows are clean and fairly basic, but all are equipped with air conditioning and a private bathroom. Each bungalow also has a private balcony—the ones set along the water have unbeatable views of the river and jungle. It’s wonderful to sit on your balcony and watch the sunrise over the distant mountains. The bungalows sleep 1–4 people.

The onsite restaurant offers both national and international cuisine, including soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, and a variety of seafood. The breakfast buffet includes options like fruit, yogurt, eggs, sausage, and bacon. The hotel’s Catamaran Bar, which is built over the water, is famous for its margaritas and piña coladas. The bar has a cable TV that receives sports channels.

Guests of this hotel are often content to relax with a book on their balcony or beside the small swimming pool. There is a well-stocked poolside bar and a tennis court as well. Wireless Internet is available at the pool and in the lounge area.

The hotel also runs a full-service marina with dock space for 25 yachts. Marina guests are welcome to use the hotel’s facilities.

In this hurricane season, I’m longing for the times Winterlude was safely in the Rio Dulce, Guatemala!  I forgot what it was like to worry about hurricanes and our boat!

Catamaran Marina was the first marina where we left Winterlude after we left the U.S.   We loved it and would go back if the wind ever blows us back to the Rio.  One of the big advantages of marinas in the Rio Dulce is protection from hurricanes.  After surviving a direct hit on Winterlude by Hurricane Charley in August 2004, I was ecstatic about NOT having to watch and worry as every low pressure system formed in the caribbean during hurricane season.  It was a vacation from hurricane worrying and I loved every minute it lasted!

Catamaran is on an island off the shore of the Rio Dulce River in Guatemala. This may be the only resort on the Rio with nice guest cabins right on the water, a beautiful tiki bar/pool oasis, marina space for 20 boats, a full service open air restaurant, beautiful grounds featuring macaws, green, white & blue herons, green parrots, turtles, huge iguanas, all in all a bit of paradise nestled in the tropical rainforests of Guatemala.

Winterlude spent the two hurricane seasons safely tucked away in the Rio at Catamaran Marina … above you can see the birdseye view of the resort – Winterlude is in this photo, but hard to see — we’re the 2nd boat from the top on the right side of the marina — just in from the sailboat anchored off.  Below is the view of Mico (Monkey) Mountain that we see off the stern of the boat in our slip.   Beautiful and ever changing.

Birds abound, the green heron hangs out in the bushes by the marina docks on the west side of the island.  And the iguanas frequently like to climb so high in the trees that they fall out & go SPLASH in the water.  All the boaters scurry out on the docks to see who fell overboard… but it’s just an iguana.

The pool is a lush green oasis in the center of the island with a Tiki Bar for afternoon happy hour.  Hummingbirds buzz around inspecting all the bright flowers while you enjoy a cocktail or take a refreshing dip in the beautiful pool.

Sunday afternoon NFL football at the Catamaran bar out over the water, is a hit with the cruiser crowd, great drinks, boquitos (snacks) and 2 different games!  You can see Brucie, the marina kitty has his own favorite way to watch NFL football!  I must admit, when we were in the States for Sunday NFL, I watched as diligently as Brucie!  But here, it’s a major social event!

The view of the Rio Dulce bridge from the front dock, altho’ I used telephoto.  Where else do the turista busses stop in the middle of the 2 lane busy highway bridge so tourists can get off, buy ice cream from the hand cart & enjoy the view .. while semi’s & cattle trucks zoom by behind them….. we’re not in Kansas anymore!!! Since Catamaran Island Resort is not accessible by land, here’s the Catamaran launcha delivering boaters & employees to the front dock.   This is the same launcha that after stopping at the front dock, delivered us directly to Winterlude on the other side of the island when we arrived.

Taking a stroll around Catamaran, you’ll see a wide variety of beautiful flowers, ginger, bamboo, probably two dozen varieties of palms, huge gumbo limbo trees ….    We love it here, and hopefully the winds will blow us back in some future cruising!

This is ironic…..I was just going through my Rio Dulce pictures a couple of hours ago….now I am really homesick for Guatemala -I can understand how you feel about hurricanes -we also rode out a direct hit- (Eye and all) a few years back. I hope you can get your forum up soon. I also can identify with you tech problems. I finally am starting a blog on WordPress and feel like a real dumb-y.

Catamaran is one of the more expensive marinas/hotels on the Rio Dulce. It is a nice location – quiet and private. The little cottages are spartan accommodation for the price. The pool and pool bar is nice – and there are two large restaurants that are usually empty. The food is expensive for the river and the quality does not match the cost in comparison to other local restaurants. Their pizza is ok, but not cheap. Their menu caters to US visitors and includes only limited local fare. All drinks must be purchased with special currency redeemable only at Catamaran Marina/Hotel. Hotel Internet is unreliable at best – usually not discoverable at all. The hotel lobby constantly broadcasts FoxNews on two large screen teevees. Access to Frontiers is provided by a converted diesel shrimper called the Sledgehammer, which is used primarily to pick up and drop off Marina/Hotel staff. You can hitch a ride if you happen to be at the right place at the right time. Staff are friendly. Tennis courts are in disrepair. Grounds are very nice. Marina services are secondary to Hotel services.

Hi Tanny – we had very good experiences at Catamaran Marina – leaving our boat for hurricane season while we returned to the US. While we were there, the marina was comparable to others in price, with more amenities – including the really nice pool and happy hour. Fronteras was good for reprovisioning. Perfect place for us. Others will have different opinions, that’s the beauty of cruisers. 🙂 Cheers — Jan

Please, can anyone advise me of the clearance height of the Rio Dulce Bridge? I have seen a comment that the clearance is “about 60 feet” …which is barely adequate for our HR 40 sailboat. In fact, I think the mast VHF antenna would strike the bridge. We are some 20 metres above water line. This is an important issue for us, planning to come to the Rio Dulce in March. thanx kindly for any advice.

Offhand, I don’t know – we stayed at Catamaran and didn’t go under the bridge except in our dinghy. I’d direct your question to someone on the Rio Dulce Chisme Forum – surely someone knows the answer. Or send an inquiry directly to Tortugal Marina – they’ll know. I’m sure there are other marinas on the “other side” of the bridge, but they come & go so frequently, that I’m not familiar. Good luck & I hope you love the Rio as much as we did! Cheers! Jan

Depending on your starting point, there are a few options that will get you to Rio Dulce.

Rio Dulce is located in the east of Guatemala and connects Lake Izabal to the Caribbean Sea.

If you’re coming from abroad, the easiest way to travel to Rio Dulce is by plane flying into La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City – the country’s capital ( if you’re wondering if the city’s worth a visit – it is! ).

Many tour operators and airlines have flights to the city. From here, you can take a bus, shuttle or hire a private car to travel to Rio Dulce. The journey takes between four and five hours, depending on the road conditions and traffic.

Buses from Guatemala City depart regularly to Rio Dulce from various terminals including the Terminal de Transportes Centrales or the Litegua bus station.

As mentioned above, the journey takes around 4-5 hours. If you’re traveling from other cities in Guatemala, you can find connecting buses from cities such as Flores (near Tikal) and Antigua.

Here are some options you have:

• Rental Car : If you prefer more flexibility and comfort, hiring a car in Guatemala City and driving to Rio Dulce is an option. This way will give you more control over your travel and you can stop along the way to visit other places.
• Private Transportation : Hiring a private driver is also an option, or you could join a tour that provides private transportation from major cities to Rio Dulce.

Monkey Bay Marina is one of the most well-known marinas along the Rio Dulce. It’s popular with sailors and travelers who are keen to explore the Rio’s natural beauty.

Monkey Bay Marina is located around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the mouth of the river where it meets the Caribbean Sea.

The marina is surrounded by tropical landscapes which is what makes it so popular with visitors.  It describes itself as a family resort (so if you’re looking for partying and romance, this isn’t the place for you!).

Accommodation

There are a range of accommodation options including cabins, camping and docking.

There are various types of cabins to suit your budget starting from basic and rustic ones to cabins with modern amenities such as private bathrooms, comfortable beds and kitchenettes.

The dock space welcomes sailboats, motorboats and yachts. There are twenty-two slips with 30- and 50-Amp service for boats and these can be booked in advance.

Monkey Bay Marina claims it may have the best potable water in the area. There’s no bar or restaurant on the site itself but there are plenty nearby.

There are six areas at Monkey Bay Marina: the docks, a “ranchito”, the “rancho,” a large workshop, an outside community kitchen and grill, and the gardens.

The Ranchito and the Rancho are both comfortable places where you can find beer and soft drinks on an honor system.

The workshop is accessible to all guests and you’ll find tools and charging outlets if you need to carry out some boat-related maintenance.

Monkey Bay Marina has a set of house rules to follow – mainly so that all guests can experience the marina comfortably.

They include clearing up after yourself once you’ve used the communal kitchens and making sure your pets are under control if you choose to bring them.

2. Marina Tortugal

Marina Tortugal has established a community environment off the shores of Rio Dulce where making new friends over coffee in the mornings is commonplace.

It is located between The Bridge and Castillo San Felipe, around a mile upriver from the busy little village of Fronteras, Rio Dulce.

It provides an advantageous spot with a peninsular setting with clean water, locational security and the all-important cooling breeze.

Boats mooring in Marina Tortugal will enjoy the community spirit here.

You’ll find bungalows to stay in treetop suites, an enchanted cottage, a nature house, the Iguana Tree large room and a river view large room.

All accommodation options private bathrooms (some even have a bathtub!) and include breakfast too.

The marina offers a range of amenities including free kayak use!

There’s baggage storage, room service, a laundry service, printer and a lounge area. There is also a free water taxi to Fronteras from in front of the restaurant at various times of the day.

The resort also offers boat maintenance, clean, filtered drinking water and a restaurant.

The food is all homemade and the restaurant’s location gives you a stunning panoramic view of the early morning sunrise and river traffic.

3. Catamaran Island Hotel

Our third option is the Catamaran Island Hotel . This hotel was established in 1969 and was used as a waypoint for a charter business from Rio Dulce to the Keys of Belize.

The travelers soon started spending more time here due to the fantastic location and it evolved into the beautiful resort that it is today.

The site offers 34 rooms which are all private bungalows that have private bathrooms and include air conditioning.

Some of the bungalows are on the riverside and others surround the garden and pool area of the hotel. Bungalow sizes range from 1-person occupation to family rooms that accommodate up to five guests.

The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool with a full-service bar and restaurant where you can enjoy local popular drinks and try exquisite dishes.

There’s also the Riverside Bar, Pool Deck Restaurant and Riverside Restaurant.

If you want to play sports here, you’ve a choice of tennis and volleyball courts to use. The marina offers 50 slips for boats, electricity and drinking water, use of the hotel pool, and a 10% discount in the restaurant and bar.

Finca Paraíso, located on the shores of nearby Lake Izabal, has a hot spring waterfall – a rare phenomenon if ever there was one!

Livingston lies at the mouth of the Rio Dulce and was once Guatemala’s main port.

The town has a unique heritage and has an off-beat Caribbean feel to it. Getting to Livingston is only by boat, which makes it all the more enticing for visitors.

Lake Izabal, from where Rio Dulce flows, is the largest of Guatemala’s lakes.

The waters are often exposed to strong windstorms and have an abundance of wildlife including waterfowl, fish, and herons.

Castillo San Felipe de Lara

The castle is a Spanish colonial fortress that sits at the entrance to Lake Izabal and was strategically located at the river’s narrowest point.

It was used by the Spanish for centuries and was looted and destroyed many times by pirates.

You may see some wildlife around the area including blue-eyed cichlids, howler monkeys, manatees, spider monkeys and jaguars.
