Why Vetrimaaran is the most interesting director in Tamil films today

Vetrimaaran is arguably among the most interesting filmmaker working in the tamil film industry. here’s documenting his rise and what it takes to be a talent like him..

His production house’s name, Grass Root Film Company, is a clear pointer to Vetrimaaran’s worldview. This Deepavali’s biggest release in Tamil Nadu is, arguably, Kodi (Flag), a political thriller he has produced that stars Dhanush in his first double role, as twin brothers. The twins may be identical but their natures are mutually exclusive. Refreshingly, Kodi casts Trisha as a feisty woman politico, giving Dhanush’s eponymous hero a run for his money.

Vetrimaaran has directed four feature films and is a winner of four National Film Awards.(Photos: By special arrangement)

“For a hero movie, it’s pretty decently written,” pronounces Baradwaj Rangan, film critic and associate editor at The Hindu. “There’s a conflict, there are surprises and even within a commercial film, it’s properly written and directed. It’s not some random moments strung together to get people whistling.”

A great working chemistry -- actor Dhanush with Vetrimaaran. (Photos: By special arrangement)

The film’s premise is how politics and political interests shape communities and the quality of their life. In this case, it involves skullduggery surrounding a factory emitting toxic effluents. It could be happening not too far away from our backyards.

At the Oscars

Vetrimaaran himself, however, was conspicuous by his absence during Kodi’s promos. He has a bigger task on hand. Visaaranai (Interrogation), the part-docudrama, part-crime thriller he directed, is India’s official entry to the 89th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. So he is in the US persuading jurors take note of his film, which has some truly hairy torture scenes. The last Tamil film that made it to the Oscars was 16 years back: Hey Ram starring Kamal Haasan.

Usually, the choice of any film to represent the country at the Oscars polarises critics, but Visaaranai remains largely unchallenged. Rangan agrees. “Visaaranai was a fantastic film.”

It tells the story of innocent migrant labourers picked up and tortured by the police to extract a false confession for a fatal robbery at an influential man’s house. How the film, shot in 42 days on a Rs 2-crore budget and eventually wining three National Film Awards, got made is interesting. After his Aadukalam in 2011, Vetrimaaran had busied himself with his production ventures, Udhayam NH4, Poriyaalan and Kaaka Muttai. When he was prepared to shoot his next, the script he picked was Soodhadi, a story on gambling, proposing Dhanush in the lead role. However, the actor had to take time off to work in Balki’s Shamitabh, being shot in Mumbai.

Vetrimaaran was mooting a book adaptation when director Balu Mahendra’s assistant serendipitously presented him with Lock Up, a riveting, partly autobiographical book written by M Chandrakumar, a former autorickshaw driver. The book, which took five years to write and another four to publish, narrates his harrowing experience while in jail in (then) Andhra Pradesh.

Vetrimaaran's Visaaranai is based on a book called Lock Up by Coimbatore-based autorickshaw driver Chandra Kumar.

“When I pitched the story to Dhanush, who later produced the film, I said I can only guarantee you a three-day weekend run at the box office. But it’s a low-budget venture; you’ll get your investment back,” Vetrimaaran laughs. “Dhanush was amused, but agreed to fund the project. [I thought] it’s the kind of film that would not bring in repeat audiences. I was proved wrong and it got a good three-week run.”

The author, Chandrakumar, was incarcerated for a fortnight way back in 1983. “Yet his experiences are relevant even today,” points out Vetrimaaran. “Visaaranai reflects a stark reality from which you cannot shut yourself out: that is its success. It was challenging to find the right kind of actors and locations. We employed real stuntmen who could exercise restraint while beating up the actors.”

“What was unique was that there were a lot of first-time actors in the film; that added rawness to it,” says K Hariharan, filmmaker and critic. “Actors like Samuthirakkani and Kishore were entirely on the sidelines. That made it an interesting watch.”

Astutely, the team decided to send it to international film fests right away, confident it would work with foreign audiences. Visaaranai premiered at the Orrizonti section of the 72nd Venice Film Festival, a first for a Tamil film, and won the Amnesty International Italia Award. Crucially, the European audience was exposed to a hitherto unexplored form of Tamil cinema that dealt with grim reality in a non-dramatic but powerful way.

“Europeans have a different policing system. They found my narrative a bit harsh, though they were moved,” explains Vetrimaaran.

A rooted voice

It is Vetrimaaran’s preoccupation with sometimes gritty, sometimes heartwarming reality that makes this 41-year-old one of the best filmmakers of our times.

“The best thing about the regional filmmakers is that they bring in a very ‘native’ feel,” says Rangan. “Like if I watch Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat for instance, I find [elements] that remind me of Vetrimaaran. But that’s more because these filmmakers do these ‘rooted’ things very well. They give you the sense of the atmosphere, the rhythms of life in that particular environment, they take care to bring them alive.”

His critically acclaimed debut venture, Polladhavan (Ruthless Man) in 2007, followed a lower middle-class young man’s search for his stolen bike, an exercise that takes him through the seamy underworld. Four years later came Aadukalam (Arena), a Pongal release that raked in six National Film Awards. The cockfight arena was where love, ego, honour, friendship and betrayal were played out in the rustic backdrop of Madurai.

Says Manimaran, long-time friend and assistant, “Vetri used to like watching cockfights in the neighbourhood in our hometown. So he thought we could develop a story around them.”

There was no doubt about who would play the lead. “I wrote Aadukalam keeping Dhanush in mind,” says Vetrimaaran. “As an actor, he delivers exactly what I need and sometimes more. As a producer, he offers me complete freedom and does not interfere at all. He trusts me completely.”

Rangan explains the Vetrimaaran touch, “There is a world of difference in the way he uses the song and dance elements in Polladhavan and Aadukalam. They have become more organic and rooted; they’re not fantasy elements.”

“I personally prefer Aadukalam to Visaaranai, but it’s like comparing apples and oranges,” says Hariharan. “Aadukalam had a certain kind of warmth and spontaneity. Visaaranai, to me, looked rather staged.”

He explains, “Visaaranai’s [appeal across the world] is that for the first time in Tamil cinema, you see this kind of brute reality without the director taking recourse to a love story or family drama. It’s also interesting that a country like India allowed such a strongly critical film on the system. There’s no doubt that Vetrimaaran is a bold filmmaker.”

Vetrimaaran’s productive chemistry with Dhanush has paid rich dividends. The two went on to produce Kaaka Muttai (Crow’s Egg) in 2015, a subversive film poking fun at what is regarded as cool - pizzas, in this case. This little gem, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, tracks two brothers from a Chennai slum dying to taste a pizza. Directed by M Manikandan with wit, not once is the children’s dignity compromised. Their family struggles in a heartless and corrupt city and soon we find ourselves cheering for our little heroes. Kaaka Muttai pocketed two National Film Awards.

“There is a stamp of quality that people have begun to associate with Vetrimaaran, because even the films he produces are pretty decent,” says Rangan, adding that he looks for, and gets, that certain quality.

Vetrimaaran’s genius lies in shining a light on people we would not even glance at in our rat race. His films show us that ordinary people often lead extraordinary lives if only we stop to talk to them.

Smitten by cinema

Born in Cuddalore near Puducherry and raised in Ranipet, a suburban town in Vellore district, two and a half hours from Chennai, Vetrimaaran was smitten by cinema even as a child. His mother, a writer, ran a school in the area, while his father was a veterinarian. Friends remember him as a film buff who watched every movie that came to town.

“He would bunk classes and watch them, each three or four times. Then he would come to the school ground where we used to hang out until 7:30 in the evening and would retell the whole story to us. My friends and I have actually walked out of the theatre at times because the film was nowhere as good as his narration. He still has that quality,” says Manimaran, his assistant.

Vetrimaaran was in his second year of Masters in English Literature in 1999 when the now-deceased filmmaker Balu Mahendra was invited to judge a short film contest at the Loyola College, Chennai. Shortly afterwards, he attended a seminar conducted by the director and was inspired enough to assist him in Julie Ganapathy, Athu Oru Kanaa Kaalam and the television series Kadhai Neram.

Athu Oru Kanaa Kaalam cemented his friendship with the lead actor, Dhanush, whom he describes as his best friend. While still assisting Balu Mahendra, Vetrimaaran pitched the story of Desiya Nedunchalai, and the actor readily agreed to play the lead.

Recalls Manimaran, “Producers were not hard to come by because we had Dhanush. But a few had misgivings about how Vetri would handle the project as a newcomer. So we tossed aside that script, which I later made into Udhayam NH4.”

The initial years proved to be rough. “I was pitching different scripts to different people for three years and it was the sixth producer who okayed Polladhavan,” says Vetrimaaran on his directorial debut.

Adds Manimaran, who assisted him in the project, “After the film was edited, we were really scared to show it to the producer. We kept stalling the screening telling him it may not have come out as he expected. Finally, when he saw it, he was satisfied. We were relieved and gradually grew confident.”

Pushing for excellence

When Manimaran himself forayed into direction with Udhayam NH4 in 2013, Vetrimaaran returned the favour by stepping in as producer under his banner, Grass Root Film Company. As he puts it, “I want my production house to be a platform for good, interesting ideas. I can find a producer for my films, but others, who may be first-time filmmakers, might have innovative scripts that mainstream producers might not understand. Like Kaaka Muttai for instance.

“I produce films in partnership as I may not be able to afford the entire budget. Dhanush ends up co-producing some of them as our tastes are similar. None of my producers ever ask me for the budget. I always make sure it is within their means and I can give the desired returns.”

For someone who has been successful both commercially as critically, Vetrimaaran has directed only three films in nine years. “For me, every film is a learning process. After each, I take time to unlearn. Then I find new content, learn it completely and then execute it.”

Manimaran describes his working process thus, “Many directors make changes to the script on the spot. But Vetrimaaran is different because he pays attention to detail. He puts in a lot of effort, so there may be last-minute adjustments with lighting and locations. Unlike working with other directors, you need to be available 24 hours.”

Outside of work, the father of two, who met his wife Aarthi while at college, likes to race pigeons, pretty much like the characters he portrays. His rootedness has also led him to voice the germ of an idea: setting up an organic farm eventually.

Rangan describes grit as the definitive quality of Vetrimaaran’s films, and praises his skill in animating the atmosphere in terms of the integrity of the characters, the plot, and the texture. “The way he shapes the characters and writes them, you feel that these are not [just] individual people; you get a sense of where they come from, where they belong. [They’re] not just some random characters floating around.”

His fans are already talking about his fourth film, Vada Chennai (North Chennai), an ambitious gangster trilogy he has been planning since 2003. After undergoing several changes of scripts and stars, Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi, Amala Paul and Samuthirakkani are among those confirmed on the project that is currently under way. Slated for release next year, Vada Chennai is also bound to have the by-now classic Vetrimaaran stamp.

Vetrimaaran: ‘More than Oscar, making others accept our local mainstream films is real development’

Vetrimaaran explains why south indian film industries are creating pan-indian content while other industries are failing to catch up..

director vetrimaran images

Vetrimaaran was part of the second edition of the CII Daksin Summit, the largest media and entertainment summit in South India. The National Award-winning director spoke about the reason why South Indian films are transcending borders. “They say art doesn’t need language and border, but art has its own language and culture,” he began.

The Polladavan director cited the pandemic and the lockdown as the reason for the shift in the way people started consuming films. “We have been talking about the so-called Pan-Indian film; the films that are made for a wider audience. But what I really respect about the films that became nationwide success is that they were not made to appease or manipulate the larger audiences who are beyond the place of origin of the films. Be it KGF or RRR or Kantara… if it is a Kannada film, it was not made with a Kannada hero, Tamil comedian, and a father or mother from the North.”

director vetrimaran images

He added, “Earlier, there was a generic approach in films like if there’s a wedding, it was very generic so it can be relatable to all kinds of audience. However, now, these filmmakers are making films for their audience, about their culture, and in their style. That’s why it becomes a hit universally. We should tell our stories, but emotions become universal. Earlier, we tried to tell larger stories and universal themes, which we failed in a way. In these recent years, that’s the change that has come out.”

“More than getting an Oscar, I think taking our mainstream films that are made for our people… taking those films and making it a success across the world is the real development and evolution. South Indian films have created an impact in terms of revenue generation because we are telling our stories, for our people, with our people. Other industries are not able to do that because they are trying to cater to everybody,” he said.

Devastation in Gaza as Israel wages war on Hamas

By Chris Lau, Antoinette Radford and Maureen Chowdhury , CNN

Al-Shifa Hospital is "besieged" by Israeli forces, Gaza Civil Defense official says

From CNN's Ibrahim Dahman, Sahar Akbarzai and Celine Alkhaldi

Al-Shifa Hospital is surrounded by Israeli forces, Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told CNN on Tuesday.

"Now Al-Shifa Hospital is besieged, and no one can reach the area," Basal said, explaining that rescue workers were unable to reach the victims in the area. He also accused the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of also targeting homes near the hospital.

CNN has reached out to the IDF for comment on its ongoing operations at the hospital and in the surrounding neighborhood.

Basal said that people were still alive under the rubble of residential buildings that had been targeted by Israeli strikes.

"We are receiving calls and pleas that they are alive under the rubble, but unfortunately we cannot reach the area because of the presence of snipers in the areas surrounding Al-Shifa Hospital,” Basal said.

"We received appeals from the beach area (to the west of al-Shifa). There are martyrs on the roads," he said.

IDF began an operation in the area around the hospital on Monday. The IDF said that troops continue "precise operations …to thwart terrorism," and claims that troops have killed "over 50 terrorists and apprehended approximately 180 suspects."

The Gaza Health Ministry says thousands of people are taking shelter at the complex. Al-Shifa is Gaza’s largest hospital facility.

US and Israel talks on Rafah are likely to occur "early next week," White House says

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

Displaced Palestinians shelter at a tent camp in Rafah, Gaza, on February 27.

A meeting in Washington between American and Israeli officials to discuss alternatives to a ground invasion of Gaza's southern city of Rafah is likely to occur next week, the White House says.

US President Joe Biden asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call Monday to dispatch a delegation of military, intelligence, and humanitarian officials to Washington to discuss the Rafah plans.

The timing of the meeting was unclear Monday, but press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday it was likely to happen early next week. She didn't have additional details on who would participate in the talks.

On Monday, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the meeting was intended to bring officials together in the same room at a critical moment in the conflict.

"Now we really need to get down to brass tacks and have the chance for a delegation from each side on an integrated basis — everyone sitting around the same table, talking through the way forward," he said.

Netanyahu says he remains intent on achieving war goals despite increasing international pressure

From CNN's Lauren Izso in Tel Aviv and Niamh Kennedy in London

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in Jerusalem, on February 18.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he remains "determined" to achieve Israel's war goals in Gaza, despite the rising international pressure after more than five months of fighting.

Addressing the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, Netanyahu said the country is currently engaged in a "a double campaign: a military campaign and a political campaign."  "We are of course subject to increasing international pressure, which we push back in order to complete the goals of the war," he said.

The United Nations, aid agencies and multiple countries have been calling for Israel to stop the fighting against Hamas and announce a ceasefire in Gaza.

Despite these pressures, Netanyahu said Israel remains intent on completing the "the military elimination of Hamas," reiterating the need to eradicate its "remaining battalions in Rafah."

The Israeli leader referenced US President Joe Biden's concerns about an Israeli operation into the southernmost city. Recapping his discussion with Biden on Monday — their first in over a month — Netanyahu said he "made it clear to the president in our conversation, in the clearest way, that we are determined to complete the elimination of these battalions in Rafah."

During the conversation, Biden voiced his "deep concerns" about Israel's plans for Rafah, asking his counterpart to send a senior delegation of military leaders to Washington to discuss the issue further and find an alternative approach, according to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Israeli restrictions on aid to Gaza may amount to war crime of starvation, UN human rights chief says

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy in London

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk addresses a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on December 6.

The United Nations' human rights chief, Volker Turk, warned that Israel's sustained restrictions on aid into Gaza may amount to the war crime of starvation.

Just one day after a UN-backed report predicted an "imminent" famine in northern Gaza, Turk pinned the blame squarely on Israel, saying the "situation of hunger, starvation and famine" in Gaza is "a result of Israel’s extensive restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid."

The high commissioner for human rights said in a statement: "The extent of Israel’s continued restrictions on the entry of aid into Gaza, together with the manner in which it continues to conduct hostilities, may amount to the use of starvation as a method of war, which is a war crime."

Turk also noted that as the occupying power, Israel has the responsibility to ensure and facilitate food and medical provisions as well as assist the work of humanitarian organizations.

Israel has repeatedly rejected accusations that it has been preventing aid from entering Gaza through its iron-clad controls at checkpoints. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to shift the blame for limited aid deliveries onto Hamas during a recent interview with CNN, accusing the group of looting supplies.

"Our policy is to not have famine, but to be the entry of humanitarian support as needed, and as much as is needed," Netanyahu told CNN on Sunday.

Turk also reminded Israel on Tuesday of its obligation under international human rights law to ensure civilians in Gaza can access aid "in a safe and dignified manner."

It comes as a string of violent incidents have taken place, including allegations of Israel firing at civilians gathered to receive aid deliveries.

Israeli military sends texts to palestinians in gaza offering cash for information on hostages.

From CNN’s Abeer Salman

Photographs of some of those taken hostage by Hamas during their recent attacks are seen on October 18, in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sent text messages to Palestinians in Gaza on Tuesday offering cash in exchange for any information about Israeli hostages.

A CNN journalist in Gaza received the message in Arabic on their phone on Tuesday stating:

"Do you want to end the war? If you have reliable information about the abducted or their abductors. Do not hesitate to contact us and you can receive a valuable cash reward.”

The message had two phone numbers attached to it as well as a link to a website,  machtoffin.com , which directs one to a website with the pictures, names, and ages of Israeli hostages.

Some background: Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis following Israeli bombardment across the enclave, where 70% of the population is already suffering from  catastrophic levels of hunger , a UN-backed report said Monday.

Following the Hamas attack on October 7 in Israel last year, the group took Israeli hostages back to Gaza, many of whom are still in Gaza. According to CNN's count last week, a total of 33 of the 130 October 7 hostages are now believed to be dead.

CNN is attempting to reach out to the IDF for comment.

Israeli delegation leaves Doha with no breakthrough but mediators remain optimistic, Qatari official says

From CNN’s Mostafa Salem in Doha

An Israeli delegation led by Mossad Director David Barnea has left the Qatari capital of Doha after one day of talks with no breakthrough, but mediators remain optimistic by the resumption of talks after weeks of an impasse, an official said.

The indirect talks, held between Israel and Hamas under Qatari and Egyptian mediation, were the first to be held in Doha at that level in months — and even though the Mossad chief is under pre-approved guidelines by his government to negotiate, mediators still believe the visit is positive.

"We are cautiously optimistic that the talks have resumed. … It’s still too early to announce any successes," Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said at a news conference in Doha.

Barnea’s departure does not mean talks have ended, Al-Ansari said, as technical teams continue discussing the parameters of the three-phase proposal oF a six-week pause is currently being negotiated on. The next step is a counterproposal to be sent to Hamas, Al-Ansari said.

More background: Since the last truce in November , Hamas and Israel have rejected several proposals, and talks have reached numerous deadlocks. Israel refused to send a delegation to a mediation meeting in Egypt earlier this month and called Hamas’ demands "ridiculous," while Hamas kept mediators waiting for days to send back its latest response.

An agreement, if reached, is expected to have multiple phases .

Qatar has separated any direct link between the ongoing talks in Doha over the release of hostages and a humanitarian pause with the US-Israel upcoming discussions on a Rafah operation . Still, Al-Ansari warned that any escalation on Rafah will have "serious" bearings on the talks.

Aid group confirms 200 tons of food from first ship delivered successfully to northern Gaza

From CNN's Muhammad Darwish and Niamh Kennedy in London

A ship belonging to the Open Arms aid group approaches the shores of Gaza towing a barge with 200 tons of humanitarian aid on March 15.

The nongovernmental organization that organized the first aid boat to Gaza confirmed Tuesday that the boat's cargo of food aid has been delivered successfully to northern Gaza.

The roughly 200 tons of aid was delivered to northern Gaza alongside a World Food Program convoy on Tuesday morning, World Central Kitchen (WCK) said in a statement.

Fears are mounting over hunger in northern Gaza after a United Nations-backed report published on Monday warned that famine could break out any time from mid-March to May.

WCK is now pushing for Arab nations to band together to create a coalition "to get humanitarian food aid to Gaza immediately through all routes available; land, air and sea."

NGO confirms 200 tons of food from aid boat delivered successfully to northern Gaza on March 19.

The nonprofit has a second boat, named Jennifer, loaded with 240 tons of aid and ready to depart Cyprus, according to the statement. Unfavorable weather conditions have prevented the second boat from leaving the port of Larnaca, WCK said.

Alongside canned food and bulk products, the boat has also been loaded with two forklifts and a crane to assist future aid deliveries to Gaza, according to the NGO.

Remember: While welcoming the success of the maritime corridor into Gaza, aid agencies and the UN have warned that sea deliveries and airdrops remain much less effective methods of delivering aid than over land.

Israeli operation at Al-Shifa Hospital continues as people trapped inside warn of dire conditions

From CNN's Lauren Izso in Tel Aviv and CNN staff

Israeli troops continue "precise operations" at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza "to thwart terrorism," according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency, known as Shin Bet (ISA).

"Thus far, the troops killed over 50 terrorists and apprehended approximately 180 suspects," according to a joint IDF and ISA statement. "The troops eliminated terrorists in close-quarters combat and located weapons in the area while avoiding harm to civilians, medical staff, and medical equipment," it added.

The Israeli army launched an operation on the hospital , where thousands of people are sheltering, on Monday.

A woman named Lamya, who is trapped inside the hospital, told CNN on the phone that people who look out the window or move between rooms get hit by Israeli fire and killed.

"There was a guy who looked from the second floor window and he was sniped," she said. "The situation is very dire." She was forced to hang up during the call as Israeli troops entered her building.

A fifth-year medical student, Ezz El-Din Lulu, who is also trapped inside Al-Shifa, called for an "urgent intervention before the hospital turns into a mass grave." The hospital is out of food, water and electricity, and Israeli troops "have literally cut us off from everything," he said.

"Anyone moving in the hospital grounds will be targeted by snipers," Lulu said in a video posted on his Instagram on Monday. "We cannot go out to treat the injured or even move around. Some families went out and were targeted and martyred," he added.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Hamas condemned the Israeli operation on the hospital and "civilians' homes" in the surrounding areas in which "dozens" of people died.

CNN is unable to independently confirm the number of dead because of difficulties accessing the Gaza Strip.

This post has been updated with an eyewitness account from inside the hospital.

Mossad director leaves Doha after participating in ceasefire talks

From CNN's Mostafa Salem in Doha

Israel's Mossad Director David Barnea speaks during the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) World Summit in Herzliya, Israel, on September 10.

Israel's head of Security Services, David Barnea, has left Doha after participating in talks with Qatari and Egyptian officials on a potential ceasefire in Gaza.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson told reporters at a news conference in Doha on Tuesday that this round of talks has now ended, and will continue at a lower level.

Here's what's next: A counterproposal from Israel is now expected to be sent to Hamas, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.

Qataris and Egyptians have been the principal interlocutors with Hamas.

Israel's Prime Minister's Office said they have no comment on Barnea's departure.

One of the world’s biggest news agencies has claimed that Kensington Palace is no longer a “trusted source” after the furor over Kate Middleton ‘s doctored Mother’s Day image.

Phil Chetwynd, global news director of Agence France-Presse ( AFP ), told BBC Radio 4’s Media Show that the agency has reviewed its relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales and will rigorously inspect future picture handouts from the royals.

Middleton has apologized for “confusion” over the photo, which she attributed to an “experiment with editing.” Kensington Palace has not commented further and has declined to publish the original image, which was purportedly taken by Prince William this year.

The photo was principally shared to mark Mother’s Day in the UK, but it is broadly accepted that the image served a dual purpose of addressing wild social media speculation about Middleton’s health and whereabouts following her abdominal surgery in January.

Asked by Media Show presenter Ros Atkins if Kensington Palace is a trusted source, Chetwynd replied: “No, absolutely not. Like with anything, when you’re let down by a source the bar is raised … We sent out notes to all our teams at the moment to be absolutely super more vigilant about the content coming across our desk — even from what we would call trusted sources.”

Chetwynd revealed that the major news agencies, including Associated Press and Reuters, spoke before issuing notices to “kill” the picture on Sunday. He said Kensington Palace was asked if it would provide the original, but the agencies did not receive a reply and the image was pulled.

Chetwynd said it is unusual for media agencies to demand that photos be taken out of circulation. “To kill something on the basis of manipulation [is rare. We do it] once a year maybe, I hope less. The previous kills we’ve had have been from the North Korean news agency or the Iranian news agency,” he explained.

Akira Toriyama, Creator of ‘Dragon Ball,’ Dies at 68

His popular manga inspired numerous television, film and video game adaptations, reaching fans far beyond Japan’s borders.

Akira Toriyama, one of Japan’s leading comics authors, whose manga and anime franchise “Dragon Ball” achieved worldwide success with its mix of comedic characters and rousing martial arts battles, died on March 1. He was 68.

His death was confirmed on Friday in a statement by his manga and design production company, Bird Studio, and Capsule Corporation Tokyo. The statement said the cause was acute subdural hematoma, a condition in which blood collects between the skull and brain. It did not say where he died.

Mr. Toriyama’s body of work, which also includes “Dr. Slump” and “Sand Land,” is recognizable far beyond Japan’s borders, having influenced generations of manga artists and cartoonists. The studio said he had several projects in the works at his death.

His best-known work, “Dragon Ball,” follows a young boy named Son Goku who embarks on a journey to collect the seven magical orbs that summon a wish-granting dragon. Since its creation in the 1980s, it has spanned 42 volumes, sold millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most famous manga, inspiring television, film and video game adaptations.

director vetrimaran images

Throughout his career, Mr. Toriyama did not care if his work did anything besides entertaining its readers, he said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun. He was, he suggested, unlike “other manga artists concerned about conveying didactic messages.”

“The role of my manga,” he said, “is to be a work of entertainment through and through.”

Akira Toriyama was born on April 5, 1955, in Kiyosu, Japan, according to local news media . He studied design at a technology and engineering high school in Aichi Prefecture. After graduating, he worked as a designer for an advertising company in Nagoya.

He left his job after a few years and started drawing manga at 23. His first manga, an action and adventure comic called “Wonder Island,” was published in 1978.

He gained popularity with the serialization of “Dr. Slump” from 1980 to 1984, a science-fiction manga about an android girl known for her childlike personality and superhuman strength. It was adapted for television as an anime series.

Mr. Toriyama’s absurd concepts and sense of caricature “sparked a real joyful hysteria” in Japan, Matthieu Pinon and Laurent Lefebvre wrote in “A History of Modern Manga” (2023).

In 1982, Mr. Toriyama married a former manga artist who published under the pen name Nachi Mikami, Mainichi Shimbun reported. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available, but local news media reports say he is survived by his wife and children.

When “Dragon Ball” was first published in 1984, it was an immediate hit, becoming one of the best-selling manga series of all time. It sold more than 260 million copies worldwide, according to Toei Animation , the studio that produced the anime adaptation.

“Dragon Ball” was serialized in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump until 1995. In the year after the series ended, the magazine lost about one million of its six million readers, according to “A History of Modern Manga.” The story lived on through anime like “Dragon Ball Z” and through video games. Mr. Toriyama also designed the characters for the Dragon Quest video game series.

A prolific manga artist, Mr. Toriyama did not necessarily have an appetite for the genre as a reader. “I have always had a hard time reading manga, including my own work,” he said in a 2018 interview with Kiyosu City Public Library.

He led a private life and gave few interviews. In one, in 2013 with the Japanese singer and actress Shoko Nakagawa, he said he did not even share all his work with his family.

“To tell you the truth, no one in my family has ever seen ‘Dragon Ball,’” he said, laughing. “I am also a hikikomori,” he added, using the Japanese word for a recluse.

But his stories continued to reach fans around the world years after their creation.

After “Dragon Ball,” Mr. Toriyama wrote single-volume manga, including “Cowa!” “Kajika” and “Jaco the Galactic Patrolman.” “Sand Land,” published in 2000, was made into a movie in 2023. Its anime version is scheduled to be released in the spring on Disney+, along with a video game.

An earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to the connection between the “Dragon Ball” manga franchise and the “Dragon Quest” video game series. Both feature characters designed by Akira Toriyama, but they involve distinct characters and story lines.

The explosive four-part docuseries, Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV, premiered on March 17. The series sheds light on the alleged toxic, manipulative, and abusive environment that plagued the sets of Dan Schneider's Nickelodeon shows during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Where is Dan Schneider now ? Find out what happened to the disgraced executive producer.

The new Investigation Discovery (ID) docuseries, directed by Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz, uncovers the “toxic and dangerous culture” behind shows created by Schneider, including All That , The Amanda Show, Victorious, Sam & Cat, Zoey 101, iCarly, and more.

Beneath the “questionable jokes” and “over-the-top sketches,” there was “an insidious environment rife with allegations of abuse, sexism, racism, and inappropriate dynamics with its underage stars and crew,” a press release for Quiet On Set reads. With interviews from cast and crew members and parents, social media commentary, and archival footage, the docuseries spotlights the “gross, abusive, and manipulative behavior that unfolded across decades” on Schneider’s shows.

In a recent statement to Variety , Schneider’s representatives denied that he sexualized young stars. “Everything that happened on the shows Dan ran was carefully scrutinized by dozens of involved adults, and approved by the network. If there was an actual problem with the scenes that some people, now years later are ‘sexualizing,’ they would be taken down, but they are not, they are aired constantly all over the world today still, enjoyed by both kids and parents.”

What happened to Dan Schneider, and where is the executive producer now? Keep reading to learn more.

Dan Schneider grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, before relocating to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. His early roles include ‘80s comedies like Making the Grade , The Big Picture , Better Off Dead, and the sitcom Head of the Class.

The following decade, Schneider connected with Nickelodeon’s executive Albie Hecht, who gave him a job to produce the sketch series All That , according to The Hollywood Reporter . (He quit that series after four seasons before being asked to revive it again in 2001.)

He eventually left All That to create The Amanda Show, starring All That alum Amanda Bynes. At the same time, he worked as an executive producer for other series on the network, including Kenan & Kel and the 1997 movie Good Burger .

In the early 2000s, he co-created the series What I Like About You starring Bynes and co-wrote and co-produced the 2002 film Big Fat Liar featuring Bynes and Frankie Muniz. Schneider returned to Nickelodeon in 2004 to executive produce Drake & Josh, starring The Amanda Show alums Drake Bell and Josh Peck.

Schneider’s popular titles for Nickelodeon include Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious, Sam & Cat, and more. He’s also credited for launching the careers of stars like Kenan Thompson, Amanda Bynes, Victoria Justice, Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy, and more.

Dan Schneider and Nickelodeon ended their longtime partnership in March 2018. Schneider’s split from the network came after the creator’s allegedly abusive behavior began to come to light. Deadline reported that members of his staff were filing multiple complaints of abusive behavior against Schneider. The site added that he was “under a cloud of suspicion” after he posted pictures of the feet of some of the young actresses he worked with.

“Following many conversations together about next directions and future opportunities, Nickelodeon and our longtime creative partner Dan Schneider/Schneider’s Bakery have agreed to not extend the current deal,” Nickelodeon and Schneider said in a joint statement.

The separation also came after ViacomCBS launched an investigation into Schneider and found no evidence of sexual misconduct but concluded that Schneider was verbally abusive on set, according to a 2021 report by The New York Times . Schneider denied all allegations of misconduct. “I couldn’t and I wouldn’t have the long-term friendships and continued loyalty from so many reputable people if I’d mistreated my actors of any age, especially minors,” he told the publication at the time.

Where Is Dan Schneider Now?

Although Dan Schneider and Nickelodeon ended their working relationship in 2018, Schneider was credited as a co-creator of the 2020 series Danger Force , a spinoff for Henry Danger, and a creator of the iCarly spinoff on Paramount+.

One year later, in 2021, The New York Times interviewed Schneider, and the former EP revealed he went on a three-year hiatus to “take care of a lot of stuff that I’d let go by the wayside for decades” and shared that he lost 100 lbs. At the time, Schneider said he was working on a pilot for a different network, which he called “ambitious and very different” from anything else he’s done and would be for “more of an adult audience.” He added that he was also working on another pilot for kids and their families.

In regards to the Nickelodeon investigation, the story said that “[Schneider] declined to comment on the investigation,” but defended “his leadership style, denied he left [Nickelodeon] on bad terms, and described his departure as a natural confluence of events after an ‘exhausting’ period in which he delivered as many as 50 episodes of shows each year.”

As of 2024, there has yet to be any news about the status of pilots or proof that Schneider is working for any other networks at this time. He occasionally posts on his Instagram page about the accomplishments of stars he formerly worked with, including Ariana Grande, Austin Butler, and Victoria Justice.

Director of Original Crow Makes It Clear He's Not Happy with Remake, Before Deleting Post

director vetrimaran images

"Brandon Lee died making [the original] ... it is his legacy," Alex Proyas said while criticizing the new film, starring Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs, after the first trailer dropped.

The director of 1994's The Crow clearly isn't thrilled about the upcoming remake.

Alex Proyas took to Facebook to share his thoughts on Lionsgate's new adaptation of the comic book, starring Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs , after seeing some negative reaction to the movie's first trailer.

"I really don't get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I'm certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film," he began, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Bill Skarsgard Goes Goth In First Photos from The Crow Remake, Draws Jared Leto Comparisons

"So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan's response speaks volumes," he continued. "THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That's how it should remain."

It appears Proyas has since deleted his post.

In the new film, Skarsgard takes over the role of goth rocker Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to avenge the murders of both himself and his fiancée. It's a part first made famous by the late Brandon Lee -- son of Bruce Lee -- who was tragically killed on set by a prop gun during filming at just 28.

Watch the trailer below:

Proyas has previously spoken out about his film ever being remade, addressing a Jason Momoa-planned reboot back in 2017 as well in a Facebook post titled "WHY I THINK THE CROW SHOULD NOT BE REMADE."

"I was privileged to know Brandon Lee -- he was a young, immensely gifted actor with a great sense of humour and a bright future ahead of him. I was also privileged to have been able to call him a friend. Our working relationship as actor/director went beyond mere collaboration. We crafted a movie together which has touched many people," he wrote at the time.

"I did not take a 'film by' credit on THE CROW. I wanted it to be Brandon's movie, because it was, and because he would not be able to make any more movies," he continued. "He brought all his passion to the movie and it has lasted as his legacy. It is a film I know he would have been proud of."

"I finished the film for Brandon - struggling through grief, along with the hugely supportive cast & crew who all loved Brandon, to complete it in his absence. We were imbued with the strength of Brandon's spirit and his inspiration. Not only Brandon's wonderful work as an actor and a film-maker, but as a man, whose humanity had touched us," his post read.

Brandon Lee's Family, Celebs React to Fatal Shooting Accident on Alec Baldwin Movie Set, Production Halted

"THE CROW would not be a movie worth 'remaking' if it wasn't for Brandon Lee. If it wasn't for Brandon you may never have even heard of this poignant little underground comic. It is Brandon's movie," wrote Proyas. "I believe it is a special case where Hollywood should just let it remain a testament to a man's immense talent and ultimate sacrifice - and not have others re-write that story or add to it."

Addressing some of the original's sequels, he added that his big issue is with the "notion of 'rebooting' this story, and the original character ... seems wrong to me." His post concluded, "Please let this remain Brandon's film."

Knowing much of the talk around the new film will also revolve around the loss of Lee, director Rupert Sanders acknowledged the actor "will always be synonymous" with the character while speaking with Vanity Fair .

"I hope he's proud of what we've done and how we've brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film," said the director. "There's a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that."

The Crow hits theaters June 7.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 33, and his headline-hitting love story with wife Sam, 57

The bullet train actor and the fifty shades of grey director married in 2012.

Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson attend "Bullet Train" Premiere At Le Grand Rex on July 18, 2022 in Paris, France

They're one of Hollywood's most talked-about couples, but away from the noise and glare of the showbiz world, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his wife Sam Taylor-Johnson are the pictures of marital bliss.

Aaron, 33, and Sam, 57, are well-established in their respective careers. Sam has been a director and artist since the early 1990s and today is perhaps best known for her work directing major motion titles such as her debut Nowhere Boy , Fifty Shades of Grey and the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black.

Aaron, meanwhile, has racked up many credits over the years in titles such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging , Avengers  and, more recently, Tenet  and Bullet Train .

But the 33-year-old is in the running to land what could be the biggest role of his career as he's tipped to be Daniel Craig's successor, taking on the role of James Bond .

If the reports are accurate, Sam and Aaron are no doubt thrilled about the prospect of Aaron becoming the next star to helm the iconic role of the world-famous spy. However, it's not just their glittering careers that have been the subject of headlines.

The husband and wife's love story has been dubbed somewhat "controversial" by some since they began dating back in 2009 due to their 24-year age gap. This is their love story explained…

When did Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Sam meet?

Aaron and Sam met while taping the film Nowhere Boy. Sam was the director on the title and Aaron played the lead role of a teenage John Lennon who was starting his early music career before becoming part of the Fab Four.

At the time, Aaron was 19 and Sam was 42. The pair become extremely close while working together and it wasn't long before they began appearing together at events as a couple, happily posing for photographs arm-in-arm and sharing a kiss.

Don't miss

At the premiere of Nowhere Boy in October 2009, the director and the lead actor walked the red carpet as a couple. Around the same time, Sam gave an interview with The Guardian and revealed that they had moved in together in March 2009. The director told the publication that sparks flew while they were working together, but they didn't become an official couple until filming had wrapped: "I managed to hold off really until almost the end of the film.

"Maybe feelings were there but un-acted upon. The thing is, we had quite a psychic link when we were working together. I knew from a flicker of an eyelash what kind of performance I was going to get. I felt that link almost from day one of meeting him."

Sam and Aaron become parents

In early 2010, the news is confirmed that Aaron and Sam are expecting their first child. Sam had previously welcomed two daughters in 1997 and 2005 respectively with her ex-husband Jay Jopling, whom she separated from in 2008.

The couple welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Wylda Rae in July 2010, and two years later in January 2012, they welcomed another girl named Romy Hero Johnson.

When did Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron get married?

Aaron and Sam officially became husband and wife just six months after welcoming their daughter Romy.

They married at Babington House in Somerset surrounded by their family and friends and decided to take each other's names and both become 'Taylor-Johnson', something that Aaron told The Guardian was "so important" to him.

What Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Sam have said about their age difference

Aaron and Sam's age difference has prompted much discussion and the pair have discussed it in interviews. Aaron previously told The Sunday Independent: "I'm an old soul and she's a young soul."

Sam, meanwhile, has been open about how she ignores criticism and comments regarding the age gap, particularly after gaining perspective from being diagnosed with cancer twice.

"Going through all the crap I've been through, I don't really listen to other people's opinions," she told the same publication. "I just follow my heart and my instincts."

More recently, in 2017, Sam candidly explained to The Hollywood Reporter: "If I gave a second thought to other people, I would be the unhappiest person, probably still in a miserable marriage.

"People like to talk about it. I'm like, 'But it works better than my last marriage.' It's lasted longer than a lot of my friends' marriages."

Timothée Chalamet Is 'A Complete Unknown' in Bob Dylan Biopic Set Images

The movie comes from director James Mangold.

The Big Picture

  • Timothée Chalamet appears as Bob Dylan in set photos for the upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown .
  • Director James Mangold is excited to bring the story of Dylan's rise to fame in the folk music scene to life.
  • The star-studded cast and long-awaited project are set to capture the essence of Dylan's iconic journey.

Timothée Chalamet may have a claim on being the biggest movie star in the world right now after his last two movies, Wonka and Dune: Part Two were met with both critical acclaim and as easy as it would be for young Timmy to rest on his laurels, he's already back at work, this time for James Mangold as he takes on the daunting task of playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown , with the first set images emerging showing Chalamet in costume as the legendary folk singer in his formative years. And as Mangold told Collider during a chat at Star Wars Celebration last year, Chalamet will also be doing all his own singing in the role.

The movie will also star Elle Fanning ( The Great ) as Dylan’s love interest and artist, Sylvie Russo, and Edward Norton as Bob Seeger , as it begins during 1965, when Dylan swapped his acoustic guitar for an electric one and brought something entirely new to the music industry. Chalamet has been attached to the project for over three years and, after a delay in its August start date due to the strikes going on at the time, the long-gestating project finally got underway earlier this month. The movie also marks Mangold's comeback to the biopic genre, after achieving significant acclaim with the launch of Ford v. Ferrari for 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Why is James Mangold Making a Bob Dylan Movie?

When sharing what excites him about this story, Mangold told Collider last year :

" It's such an amazing time in American culture and the story of Bob, a young 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with $2 in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years first being embraced and kind of into the family of folk music in New York. And then of course, kind of out running them at a certain point as his star rises. It’s so beyond belief, it's such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in America, the American scene, different characters from Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan, to Pete Seeger, to Joan Baez. All have a role to play in this movie."

We're still awaiting an official release date for A Complete Unknown , but stay tuned to Collider for more news and in the meantime, learn everything we know about the upcoming Dylan biopic in our handy guide here.
