The R Class Racing Sloop Directory
Classic R-Class Yachts racing in Sodus Point, New York. Circa the 1970s
The R-Class yacht design is based on the Universal Rule and was popular during the 1920's. Over the last decade many R's that were thought to have been lost have reemerged out of workshops all over North America looking as good as new. Two predominant styles of restoration are evident, classic restorations with wooden spars and booms and "classic" sails, and the racing restoration with self tailing winches, aluminum masts, and modern sails. There seem to be 4 fleets of R's. The west coast , Lake Erie , Lake Ontario, and New England. This website is an attempt to have a central database which lists all the currently active R's and to help those who are interested in restoring an R locate the remaining boats. If you have information about an R-Boat that is sailing at your club or is sitting disused in a barn, back yard, garage, field or parking lot, please feel free to contribute what information you may have.
Each boat has a detail page with and pictures, notes and comments, you can click on the name of a boat below to visit the detail page.
The number of R's currently actively sailed according to database: 26
Please complete this form if you have any modifications regarding the boats below or would like to see something added
As mentioned above, the R-Class rule was know as the 20 footer, for boats measuring into the universal rule below a total rule measurement of 20' where all measurements were in feet and pounds.
On Lake Ontario, the Lake Ontario R-Class association developed their own updated version of their local rule. This version is used to measure in boats on the lake for the many annual regattas where they race level. The highlight being the annual LYRA regatta where the R's have perpetually raced for the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup since it was deeded to the class in 1926.
- Lake Ontario R-Class Rule (Updated 2013)
There is demand among owners to develop a revised version of the rule that might apply to boats from all over which would offer an opportunity to organize racing with more of these lovely boats.

project hype-r yacht by davide benaglia has a dance floor, cinema and beach area on board
Disco on board davide benaglia’s project hype-r yacht.
Designer Davide Benaglia comes up with a yacht design that has a modular beach area. The owner can transform this place on board the Project Hype-r into a cinema deck, a dance floor for disco parties, or both, depending on the spacing. It’s a layout that the designer has planned for his young, dynamic, and digitally native client. He gives each space a specific function. It allows for transitions between entertainment and relaxation, two themes that the modern young yacht owner seems to be looking for.
Already on board, the upper deck may be an extension of the beach area on the lower deck. A sunset lounge area awaits the guests here, ideal for watching the horizon before the dawn of the night, or just enjoying the last rays before the party begins. Drinks in hand and some unwinding moments are how Davide Benaglia pictures the function of the space. It somewhat complements the sundeck nearby, which, as opposed to the common areas, is a nook entirely for the owner.
A secluded retreat on the yacht’s sundeck
For Project Hype-r’s sundeck, Davide Benaglia puts a private study and some living areas into place. They can help provide a secluded retreat to the owner, who may want a few moments on their own. It’s also here that they can view the open sea. Relaxation is a theme that runs its course throughout the interior of the yacht. Soft and modern palettes find their home through the walls, furnishings, and object pieces within Project Hype-r.
The designer , who specialized in yacht design with a Master’s degree from the Politecnico di Milano, even dolls up the area with a fireplace. Here, the guests can cozy and warm themselves up in times of cold seasons. The yacht’s exterior design is minimal, as if contrasting the modern interiors. Sleek lines and hush-down colors suit up the sides of Project Hype-r. The gray tone slopes when it arrives at the rear of the yacht, forming wave-like imagery that may hark back to the movement of the sea. As of publishing the story, Davide Benaglia has yet to announce the production of the Project Hype-r yacht for the client.

R Class is the designation for vessels rating 20 ft. under the old Universal Rule. The classic J-Boats of 1920’s America’s Cup clashes are the image that most people have of racing from this era. But in reality it was its little sister, the R-Boat that was the centre of attention for high performance sailing in the 1920’s and 1930’s with large fleets on both the west and east coasts of North America.
The first R Class boats were designed and raced in the years leading up to World War I, but it was after the Great War that R Class came into its own with more than 100 boats build between 1918 and 1930.
Univeral Rule
As long as there have been sailboats, people have wanted to race them. In the earliest days of yacht racing, including the first America’s Cup races raced off the Isle of Wight in 1851, the fastest boat was the winner regardless of how large or how much sail. As racing became more sophisticated, different rules were proposed based on a vessel’s length or displacement, but each had only local followings or major failings. A standardized classification of yachts was proposed by Nathanial Herreshoff in 1898 and adopted several years later by the forerunner of the North American Yacht Racing Union (itself the forerunner of today’s Canadian Yachting Association and US Sailing). This rule came to be known as the Universal Rule.
Under this Universal Rule a Rating was calculated:
Rating (ft) = 0.18 * Length * √Sail Area
3 √Displacement
Vessels which rated over 17 ft. and not over 20 ft or under were known as 20 footers and designated as R-Class. Under the same rule vessels rated over 65 ft and not over 76 ft. were designated J-Class – these became the famous, fabulous vessels that raced for the America’s Cup in the 1930’s.
It is important to note that 20 foot refers to the rating by formula, not the actual length of the vessel which was decided by the designer to meet his idea of optimization of the formula. Typically R Class boats had overall lengths between 35 and 40 feet.

Embark on a nostalgic tour of the late Queen's luxury yacht
Posted: 19 July 2024 | Last updated: 19 July 2024
There's a long tradition of British royal yachts, dating back to 1660 and the reign of Charles II. During 44 years in royal service, Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia , also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia , sailed the equivalent of once round the world for each year, calling at over 600 ports in 135 countries, including the United States of America, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Britannia was decommissioned in 1997, and has so far not been replaced. But it's worth looking back over the illustrious service performed by the royal yacht.

Joining Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their 17-day tour of Italy's sights and cities in April-May 1985 was Prince William and Prince Harry. The family are seen on board Britannia at Venice.

"Second honeymoon"
Many Italians described the tour as a "second honeymoon" for the royal couple. Meanwhile, cities like Venice certainly provided a beautiful and historic backdrop for HMY Britannia .
Humanitarian role
In January 1986, Queen Elizabeth's luxury yacht rescued over 500 people of nearly 50 different nationalities from war-torn South Yemen and evacuated them to Djibouti. Britannia maneuvered close to a beach east of Aden to pick up civilians caught in the violent unrest after fighting broke out in the wake of a failed coup d'etat, which quickly escalated into civil war.

Growing up fast, Prince William and Prince Harry wear baseball-style caps given to them by the crew of the Canadian frigate HMCS Ottawa after they toured the ship that was moored alongside Britannia on the Toronto waterfront. Charles and Diana were in Canada in late October 1991 as part of a royal tour.
D-Day commemorations
June 6, 1994 marked the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. To mark the historic occasion, Britannia and her royal passengers joined a colorful fleet review off Portsmouth and Gosport, in southern England.

Besides hosting politically- and diplomatically-themed functions, Britannia held numerous "Sea Days"— British overseas trade missions to promote business, trade, and industry around the globe.
VIP guests and celebrities
Among the many VIPs who wined and dined onboard Britannia was President Nelson Mandela, pictured here in 1995. Other guests welcomed onboard over the years include Winton Churchill and celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor.

Final foreign mission
The handover ceremony of Hong Kong on July 1, 1997, which marked the transfer of sovereignty over the territory from the UK to China, was the Royal Yacht's final foreign mission. Britannia had been scheduled for decommissioning.
Time to disembark
Britannia is pictured returning to Portsmouth in November 1997. The vessel would be decommissioned the following month. Thousands of well-wishers lined the shore and gathered at the entrance to the harbor to witness the historic moment as the grand old lady of the seas arrived at the end of her farewell tour of Britain.
Tearful farewell
On December 11, 1997, after 44 years in royal service, Britannia was retired from the seas. The late Queen, normally undemonstrative, was seen wiping away a tear during the decommissioning service, which was also attended by Prince Philip and Prince Charles.
HMY Britannia sailed to Scotland and began a new role as a visitor attraction moored in the historic Port of Leith in Edinburgh.
Still a royal favorite
Britannia still hosts the occasional royal get-together. Pictured on July 29, 2011 are Kate and William arriving for an evening reception onboard the royal yacht to celebrate the impending wedding of Zara Phillips (the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II) and Mike Tindall.
Popular tourist attraction
Today the Royal Yacht Britannia is one of Scotland's most popular tourist attractions.

Kyle richards reunites with morgan wade after mauricio umansky’s pda with russian actress.

Kyle Richards supported Morgan Wade at her concert Friday after her estranged husband, Mauricio Umansky, was photographed locking lips with a Russian actress on Wednesday.
The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star, 55, was photographed watching Wade, 29, from backstage at the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival in St. Paul.
She appeared to be singing along in a blue and black bandage dress as she watched the country singer work the stage. She wore her wavy brunette hair down and accessorized with layered necklaces and black shades.
Videos shared on social media also showed Richards and Wade watching Gwen Stefani perform from the side of the stage.
Boots on the ground spotted Kyle Richards from #RHOBH in St. Paul for Morgan Wade’s concert today 👀 pic.twitter.com/xiCQRbfCce — Queens of Bravo (@queensofbravo) July 19, 2024
Richards and Wade were subject to intense dating rumors last year but repeatedly denied them.
“We are very good friends,” the Bravolebrity told paparazzi last July.
A few months later in October, she doubled down that their relationship is platonic on “Watch What Happens Live” when she described Wade as “one of [her] best, best friends in the world.”
Richards and Wade’s reunion came two days after Umansky, 54, was caught smooching 33-year-old Ukrainian-American actress and model Nikita Kahn.
They met up at the Mykonos airport shortly after the “Buying Beverly Hills” star landed. They immediately greeted each other with a passionate kiss and hug.
The pair follow each other on Instagram but have not interacted on the platform. Neither have publicly addressed their relationship, and Umansky didn’t return Page Six’s original request for comment.
Following the PDA, Richards deleted the term “wife” from her Instagram bio. In May, she dropped Umanksy from her name on social media but kept the “wife” description.

The pair have been publicly separated since July 2023 — though it was reported that they split months before the news was confirmed.
Since then, Richards has been candid about the ups and downs of their “difficult” separation , which she initiated.
In January, she said on “Jeff Lewis Live” that she doesn’t “know what life is without being with Mauricio.”
She added, “It’s hard. It’s painful. It’s scary.”
Despite the upsetting situation, the exes have remained on good terms.
They reunited for Umansky’s 54th birthday in late June and even spent the Thanksgiving holiday together last fall.
