Unique design enables top performances
The F1x A-class foiling catamaran is the ultimate reflection of our current design language. The aerodynamic design accentuates the performance qualities of this super fast foiling racing boat. The sophisticated deck plan provides clear control and minimal air resistance.
Foils The rudders and daggerboard foils used on the F1x A-class foiling catamarans are produced with the highest quality carbon pre-preg fibers. The foils are cured in our own Autoclave . Our winning foil design was created in close cooperation with Glenn Ashby and the designers of AC Team New Zealand .
Construction The F1x A-cat is manufactured entirely according to the carbon pre-preg/ Nomex production method, and cured in our Autoclave. This technology is the same as used in the aerospace industry and within other foiling boats like for example, the America’s Cup.
Design The design of the F1x foiling A-class catamaran was completely conceived by the DNA design team and made at DNA’s own yard. In the DNA design team Pieterjan Dwarshuis, Mischa Heemskerk and the renowned Dutch industrial design engineer Rudo Enserink worked closely together to create the perfect foiling A-class catamaran.

Sail GP: how do supercharged racing yachts go so fast? An engineer explains

Sailing used to be considered as a rather sedate pastime. But in the past few years, the world of yacht racing has been revolutionised by the arrival of hydrofoil-supported catamarans, known as “foilers”. These vessels, more akin to high-performance aircraft than yachts, combine the laws of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to create vessels capable of speeds of up to 50 knots, which is far faster than the wind propelling them.
An F50 catamaran preparing for the Sail GP series recently even broke this barrier, reaching an incredible speed of 50.22 knots (57.8mph) purely powered by the wind. This was achieved in a wind of just 19.3 knots (22.2mph). F50s are 15-metre-long, 8.8-metre-wide hydrofoil catamarans propelled by rigid sails and capable of such astounding speeds that Sail GP has been called the “ Formula One of sailing ”. How are these yachts able to go so fast? The answer lies in some simple fluid dynamics.
As a vessel’s hull moves through the water, there are two primary physical mechanisms that create drag and slow the vessel down. To build a faster boat you have to find ways to overcome the drag force.
The first mechanism is friction. As the water flows past the hull, a microscopic layer of water is effectively attached to the hull and is pulled along with the yacht. A second layer of water then attaches to the first layer, and the sliding or shearing between them creates friction.
On the outside of this is a third layer, which slides over the inner layers creating more friction, and so on. Together, these layers are known as the boundary layer – and it’s the shearing of the boundary layer’s molecules against each other that creates frictional drag.

A yacht also makes waves as it pushes the water around and under the hull from the bow (front) to the stern (back) of the boat. The waves form two distinctive patterns around the yacht (one at each end), known as Kelvin Wave patterns.
These waves, which move at the same speed as the yacht, are very energetic. This creates drag on the boat known as the wave-making drag, which is responsible for around 90% of the total drag. As the yacht accelerates to faster speeds (close to the “hull speed”, explained later), these waves get higher and longer.
These two effects combine to produce a phenomenon known as “ hull speed ”, which is the fastest the boat can travel – and in conventional single-hull yachts it is very slow. A single-hull yacht of the same size as the F50 has a hull speed of around 12 mph.
However, it’s possible to reduce both the frictional and wave-making drag and overcome this hull-speed limit by building a yacht with hydrofoils . Hydrofoils are small, underwater wings. These act in the same way as an aircraft wing, creating a lift force which acts against gravity, lifting our yacht upwards so that the hull is clear of the water.

While an aircraft’s wings are very large, the high density of water compared to air means that we only need very small hydrofoils to produce a lot of the important lift force. A hydrofoil just the size of three A3 sheets of paper, when moving at just 10 mph, can produce enough lift to pick up a large person.
This significantly reduces the surface area and the volume of the boat that is underwater, which cuts the frictional drag and the wave-making drag, respectively. The combined effect is a reduction in the overall drag to a fraction of its original amount, so that the yacht is capable of sailing much faster than it could without hydrofoils.
The other innovation that helps boost the speed of racing yachts is the use of rigid sails . The power available from traditional sails to drive the boat forward is relatively small, limited by the fact that the sail’s forces have to act in equilibrium with a range of other forces, and that fabric sails do not make an ideal shape for creating power. Rigid sails, which are very similar in design to an aircraft wing, form a much more efficient shape than traditional sails, effectively giving the yacht a larger engine and more power.
As the yacht accelerates from the driving force of these sails, it experiences what is known as “ apparent wind ”. Imagine a completely calm day, with no wind. As you walk, you experience a breeze in your face at the same speed that you are walking. If there was a wind blowing too, you would feel a mixture of the real (or “true” wind) and the breeze you have generated.
The two together form the apparent wind, which can be faster than the true wind. If there is enough true wind combined with this apparent wind, then significant force and power can be generated from the sail to propel the yacht, so it can easily sail faster than the wind speed itself.

The combined effect of reducing the drag and increasing the driving power results in a yacht that is far faster than those of even a few years ago. But all of this would not be possible without one further advance: materials. In order to be able to “fly”, the yacht must have a low mass, and the hydrofoil itself must be very strong. To achieve the required mass, strength and rigidity using traditional boat-building materials such as wood or aluminium would be very difficult.
This is where modern advanced composite materials such as carbon fibre come in. Production techniques optimising weight, rigidity and strength allow the production of structures that are strong and light enough to produce incredible yachts like the F50.
The engineers who design these high-performance boats (known as naval architects ) are always looking to use new materials and science to get an optimum design. In theory, the F50 should be able to go even faster.

- by choosing this option, the iFLY serial mast (black anodized aluminum) is replaced by a high-tech Fiberfoam carbon mast. The carbon mast reduces weight by 4.7kg and increases sailing performance. However, the carbon mast is not recommended for double trapezing

- The joint is made with a massive carbon sleeve inside. We did not observe any performance loss. The upper 2.25m of the mast can be taken off within seconds. No tools needed. It can be done without removing shrouds or diamonds and allows solving storage problems. Further this option can reduce shipping cost e.g. for overseas transport. Some sailors with height restrictions in the port or on their way to the water solve this by reducing thus the boat hight to 5.8m.
Option: Softwing rig for highest performance : 2.400 €
- iFLY is delivered with a state of the art decksweeper rig (like this year’s A-class sails). By choosing this option, the standard sail is replaced by the Heru Softwing rig: a three-dimensional structure bringing performance gains. Very different than a solid wing (as used e.g. in AC50 / C-Class) the softwing is not fragile and can be rolled and hoisted like a standard sail. It is watertight and thus floating, making righting up after a capsize even easier.

Peter Burling and the New Zealand Black Foils sailed a flawless podium race on the Hudson River on Sunday to win the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix and clinch a spot in SailGP’s $2 million, winner-take-all Grand Final in San Francisco next month.
Burling and his mates took the inside position at the start and kept their 50-foot foiling catamaran ahead of Phil Robertson of Canada and Giles Scott of Britain to win for the fifth time in 12 regattas. They still need to get through the San Francisco regatta in one piece on July 13 and 14 but will have a spot on the starting line of the three-boat Grand Final for the second straight year.
Three-time defending SailGP champion Tom Slingsby and Team Australia missed the podium race for the second straight regatta but leap-frogged Spain into second place in the season standings. The Aussies went 9-1 in Sunday’s two fleet races and finished fourth overall.
The Kiwis have exerted dominance despite a stunning setback in the season’s third regatta, when their wingsail suddenly shattered and fell into the Mediterranean minutes after they had completed the first day of racing in Saint-Tropez. They were forced to the docks for the rest of that regatta and the next regatta.
It’s not surprising the Kiwis have bounced back, considering their deep experience. Burling and wing trimmer Blair Tuke won three Olympic medals together, including one gold, and are the core of two-time defending America’s Cup champion Emirates Team New Zealand.
“I knew we had a long road ahead of us to be top of the leaderboard going into the Grand Final, missing an event, not only the points side of things but just the lack of training time, which this group has had less training time than anyone else in the whole league this season,” Burling said.
“It’s been a tough season but to just charge through that and get these wins on the board is something we’re super proud of,” he said before the crew members sprayed each other with Champagne.
The Kiwis lead the trans-Tasman Sea rival Aussies 93-78 on the season leaderboard, while Spain’s Diego Botin is third with 76 points. France is five points out of podium position, Canada and ROCKWOOL Denmark are another four points back, and the British are 10 points back.
Nothing is given in SailGP, where penalty points, a collision or a capsize can drastically affect a team’s fate.
Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and former America’s Cup champion, beat Burlng and Britain’s Sir Ben Ainslie in the Season 3 Grand Final in tech baron Larry Ellison’s global league. The prize money has doubled to $2 million this season for the winning crew.
Robertson had a perfectly timed start Sunday but the Canadians briefly buried one bow into the water. Burling had the inside position and forced Canada and Britain high and wide approaching the first mark to gain control.
“Awesome to get another win on the board. Really tricky conditions, really snakes and ladders, but to get three solid starts today, put together three solid races and end up winning it,” Burling said. “I’m pretty proud of the team.”

Specifications were drawn up in collaboration with VPLP, a naval architecture firm whose reputation is well established, to create a hydrofoil catamaran that is easy to use and accessible to all: the Befoil 16. It is a 16-foot hydrofoil catamaran designed for lovers of new sensations and sailing schools, which is easy to handle, and which, thanks to its large surface area and stability, allows safe navigation over water.

Hats off to Gunboat. The company that put the cool into cruising cats has done it again by producing the world’s first foiling ‘cruising’ yacht.
And it seems the G4 lives up to her promise – she actually flies. The G4 launched this week in St Maarten, rose onto her foils in 14 knots wind, and has already hit 30 knots.
“It’s insane!” Gunboat’s ecstatic founder Peter Johnstone told me after the G4’s first trials. “You look at the photos and your instinct and intuition tell you it must be crazy scary. But up there onboard the boat it’s mind-bending – it couldn’t be smoother or calmer!”

While the America’s Cup teams continue to dispute what size cats to race, Gunboat’s new 40-foot weapon is proof that the foiling effect is applicable to the broader sailing public. In one of the most radical steps in boatbuilding history, Johnstone, the Dutch DNA design team and builders Holland Composites have created the first production cruising foiler.
The potential speeds of the G4 are unheard of for anything other than grand prix racing multihulls, so there will be little that will be able to touch her on the water.
“Max speed recorded so far is 31.9 knots,” Johnstone reports. “We should get into the mid to late 30s as the tuning progresses.” Stop and consider that for a minute!
Initial trials have been held in various winds this week from 9-25 knots. “At the top end, you drop a reef in and it gets easier and faster as you lower the centre of effort.”
“And there is definitely an upwind foiling mode,” Johnstone reckons. “It’s pretty dramatic when you dial in the rake of the leeward board. The pitching stops and the speed goes up two or three knots from 13 to 16 knots.
“There is the potential to do 18–19 knots upwind.”

Heeled and flying: the Gunboat G4 foiling during her first week of trials off St Maarten
The 15ft long daggerboards of the G4 lift to draw just 2ft. The rake and height of these are adjustable by hand while sailing – so you can set the ride height to conventional mode should you not want to foil.
But an aspect Johnstone was particularly happy with was the comfort of the ride. “You sheet in, she rises up and the speed doubles. The ride gets noticeably smoother and more comfortable – we’ve had people walking around the deck, the boat has really nice manners.”

The G4 has an added twist of wow-factor: like the rest of Gunboat’s range, she offers accommodation too. The cockpit has a galley style island for cooking and socialising around (granted it’s a bit exposed to brew up at those speeds) – plus there are two double and two single berths within.
The G4 is surely sailing’s ultimate adrenaline rush for a wealthy owner. “Get the gun, be the party, cruise home” is Gunboat’s motto for the boat. Can you imagine seeing a fleet of them zinging around at a regatta?
Gunboat took a big risk with this innovative project, which is set up to be production-built. After the results of these early trials they will doubtless be rewarded by a string of orders for this, the hottest new ride available.
