Minnesota Yacht Club Music Festival set to go after floods recede from Harriet Island

W ith the floodwaters now gone from Harriet Island in St. Paul, city leaders are detailing the extensive three week cleanup that will lead up to this weekend's Minnesota Yacht Club Music Festival.

St. Paul's Park and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez says its been a lot of effort from over one hundred city workers to get the site back to normal.

"We started cleaning out like the Wigington Pavilion, clearing all the silt from the building, pressure washing, sanitizing the space and we have to check all the utilities for all the facilities on the island," says Rodriguez. "So, your electrical outlets, plumbing, gas. And they get to power washing and sanitizing the trails and just cleaning up all that silt and debris that comes from the river and the flood."

He says another large-scale clean up of the downtown St. Paul area will be underway all this week in preparation for this weekend's festival.

According to Rodriguez, this is one of the biggest cleanups he's ever been a part of.

"I would say definitely. It wasn't on my checklist for this year, that's for sure," he jokes. "But I would say things definitely were expedited a bit, you know, deploying more resources where we needed to, and bringing in contractors as well. It's a testament to our front line staff."

Rodriguez says the efforts will need to continue after storms Saturday night downed trees in the area, and created even more messes to clean up. He adds that things should be full steam ahead.

The two-day festival takes place Friday and Saturday. There are two stages with no overlapping sets between the 20 artists scheduled to perform.

Artists for the festival include Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Gwen Stefani, The Black Crowes and Alanis Morissette on Friday. Saturday will include locals from Soul Asylum, The Offspring, Gary Clark Jr. and Red Hot Chili Peppers plus more on each day.

Ticket and more festival information is available here .

Radio Island

Visitors cruising along US Highway 70 in between the towns of Morehead City and Beaufort will briefly travel over a small parcel of land that makes a momentary appearance in between the two on-the-water bridges. This small slip of terrain is known as Radio Island, and it’s certainly more than meets the eye.

Radio Island beach access

Home to a yacht club, several marinas, a scenic beach, a fishing pier, and multiple boat or kayak launching areas, Radio Island offers visitors a surprisingly large number of things to do while being relatively “close to home” for Morehead City or Beaufort vacationers and locals. Definitely worth a second look, Radio Island is a unique component of the Crystal Coast landscape, and is worthy of exploration in more ways than one.

History of Radio Island

One of the first things Crystal Coast newcomers ask when they hear about this island’s existence is “Why is it called Radio Island?”

As it turns out, this unusual moniker wasn’t always this region’s namesake, and the area originated as the blander, but arguably more accurate, Inlet Island.

The then-Inlet Island was created in the 1930s as part of a larger plan to create a deeper shipping channel and also to build port facilities in Morehead City. Essentially, the island was created by dredging spoils from the formation of the channel, which were deposited on an existing marsh, creating a new parcel of solid land. The island was originally owned by the U.S. Navy, but after World War II, the territory was sold to private investors. In 1947, the investors decided to build a 280’ foot tower on Inlet Island to establish a new radio station – WMBL. It was at this time that Inlet Island became known instead as “Radio Island.”

The new radio station was a big deal to locals, as it was the first radio station in Carteret County, and was well known for its clear reception and surprisingly long range, thanks to the aforementioned tower.

Radio Island Beach

The station remained in operation well after the “Golden Age of Radio” was over, and was eventually sold and moved in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Today, the iconic radio station is long gone with the exception of a small flag on Old Causeway Road that marks its former home, however, the island has enjoyed recent development in the form of the aptly named Radio Island Marina, and the relatively new Olde Town Yacht Club.

Today, while Radio Island hasn’t grown much more in its roughly 80 years of existence, the isle is still a popular destination for mariners, anglers, and any visitor who appreciates a quick waterfront that’s just barely off the beaten path.

Visiting Radio Island

Radio Island has a number of attractions for visitors who appreciate the great outdoors. Newcomers and explorers will want to swing by these Radio Island destinations that are locally known as fine spots for enjoying a full day of fun in the sun, or on the water.

Newport River Fidhing Pier

Radio Island / Newport River Boat Launch

Radio Island is home to one of the largest public boat ramps and piers in the area, the Newport River Boat Ramp. This site is found almost directly off the main highway at 301 Highway 70, and takes up almost the entirety of the northwest corner of Radio Island. The expansive area features parking for 56 vehicles with trailers, public restrooms, and six boat launches that can accommodate vessels of varying sizes. From this site, visitors can directly reach the Newport River, as well as the Back Sound, the Bogue Sound, and other waters in and around the Crystal Coast region. In addition, the Newport River Boat Ramp has a 575’ ft. long fishing pier that extends into the heart of the river, and which is a popular destination for local anglers.

Radio Island Public Beach Access

Radio Island Public Beach Access

Another enticing site on Radio Island is the public beach access which is located on the edge of the Bulkhead Channel, which borders the Bogue Sound. Located on the southern edge of the island, and managed by the Carteret County Parks and Recreation department, this destination is an almost secretive spot for some convenient fun in the sun.

The beach features nice and gentle waves that are ideal for young visitors, and which serve as fine grounds for fishing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and other sports that require calm and shallow waters. The beach is also nicely wide and sandy, and the site features parking, restrooms, seasonal showers, and handicapped accessible facilities via a long wooden boardwalk that leads directly to the sand. There are a set of rules for visiting the beach, (such as no fireworks, beach fires, or glass containers), which are stationed at the beach’s entrance. Slightly hidden, this beach access can be a little tricky to find for newcomers, but is a welcome destination for sunny days on the sand.

Old Town Yacht Club on Radio Island

Old Town Yacht Club

This relatively new addition to the Crystal Coast landscape is becoming a popular destination for vacationers who want to enjoy a stay on the water. The complex features an array of condominiums which can be rented by area vacation rental companies, as well as beach access, a swimming pool and spa, a fitness center, a poolside pavilion with grills, and an on-site marina. Open to short and long term visitors alike – by boat or by land – this yacht club and marina has quickly become an enticing place to stay that’s seemingly in the middle of isolated Radio Island, but which is close to all the top attractions of Beaufort and Morehead City.

Tips and Tricks for Visiting Radio Island

  • Radio Island is easy to reach, but visitors will want to pay attention to find the “exit” to this destination. Turn south on Marine Road in between the towns of Morehead City and Beaufort on US Highway 70 to access the heart of the island.
  • The public beach access is located off of Olde Towne Yacht Club Drive, (not to be confused with the adjacent Olde Towne Yacht Club Road.) There are no convenience or beach stores nearby, so be sure and bring along everything required for a day at the beach.
  • Accommodations on Radio Island, and specifically at the Olde Towne Yacht Club, are available through multiple property management companies in the area. Search for vacation rentals in Beaufort / Morehead City to find area condos.
  • The public beach access is ideal for kayaking, but visitors will want to use caution when entering the Bulkhead Channel, which can attract vessels of all sizes. Stick close to the shore, and watch for windy days when the local currents can be deceptively swift.

Radio Island is a bit of a hidden gem destination along the Crystal Coast. Barely visible and seldom discovered by vacationers, the relatively “new” island is nonetheless a neat place to explore, or to enjoy a lazy afternoon on the sand. Found just off the main drag, and featuring a unique history that shaped an equally unique landscape, Radio Island is definitely worth a trip for any visitor who wants to fully discover the Crystal Coast.

Burris skippers Maverick to record time in Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

CHICAGO (AP) — Sanford Burris skippered Maverick to a record-breaking finish in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, finishing the course of 289 nautical miles up Lake Michigan in 22 hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds.

That was 1 hour, 6 minutes and 11 seconds faster than the old record set by Roy P. Disney aboard Pyewacket in 2002.

The Maverick crew celebrated briefly as it crossed the finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island Lighthouse on Sunday. It then kept sailing as part of the “Super Mac” race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and the Bayview Mackinac races that continued into Lake Huron for a total of 496 nautical miles.

Maverick also claimed the Royono Trophy for being the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition of the race, which is sponsored by Wintrust. Southerly winds and overnight storms created the perfect conditions for an incredible downwind race.

Burris, from Kirtland, Ohio, is co-owner of the carbon fiber Andrews 80 along with William and Ward Kinney. Burris sails with his sons and many longtime friends. Also among the 20-member crew is Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Disney, a grandnephew of Walt Disney. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is, and what a classic sailboat race it is.”

Remains of 2 people found after life-raft washes ashore on Sable Island

People are believed to be man, 70, and woman, 60, reported missing last month.

A sailboat can be seen in the ocean, with the shoreline in sight.

Social Sharing

Nova Scotia RCMP say the bodies of two people have been recovered after a life-raft carrying their remains was found washed ashore on Sable Island earlier this week.

Police believe the people recovered are a 60-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man from British Columbia reported missing last month.

In a news release Friday, police say Parks Canada contacted the RCMP and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) on Wednesday at around 3:15 p.m. AT after the vessel was discovered.

The 3.3-metre life-raft found on Sable Island, about 290 kilometres southeast of Halifax, is believed to have been from a larger vessel named Theros, police say.

RCMP say Theros was reported missing to the JRCC on June 18 after leaving Halifax harbour on June 11 en route to the Azores.

The medical examiner is still working to positively identify the individuals, police said, but next of kin have been notified.

On Facebook, images shared on a page titled Theros Sailing Adventure, which appears to have been run by Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood, show Theros departing from the Dartmouth Yacht Club on June 11.

In a video shared that same day, Clibbery provided an update on their journey.

"We're away from the Nova Scotia coast now. We're 16.6 nautical miles (30 kilometres) away from where we started," he said.

It wasn't the first big sailing expedition for Clibbery and Packwood.

On YouTube, the pair regularly posted video blogs about their travels on the Theros, including sailing expeditions along the Nova Scotia coastline and in the United States and Mexico.

"This channel is the place where we share videos of our journeys as we travel around the globe either by sailing our GibSea 42 ft sailboat, kayaking to explore caves and coves, or using the number 11 bus (ie on foot) on long distance walking trails, including el Camino de Santiago or across Canada by electric car," they wrote in the channel's description.

Last update received June 13

The last update from the duo aboard Theros was received by family and friends on June 13, said Len Hickey, the JRCC's senior public affairs officer.

"There was no signs of distress and their planned route had them arriving in the Azores on the second of July," said Hickey.

"The last known position of the boat was in the Rescue Coordination Center Boston area of responsibility and that was just southeast of Sable Island."

When the vessel did not materialize on July 2, Hickey said the JRCC conducted a search — which followed the boat's intended route — with help from the 413 Squadron Greenwood, a CC-130 Hercules aircraft and a provincial airliner out of Halifax.

It concluded on July 4 without locating the vessel. Additional searches were conducted near the Azores, with no discoveries, until the life-raft was found on Sable Island on July 10.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing, with the assistance of Parks Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard and the JRCC.

R.I. soda pop presidential poll: A preference of politics or palate?

The rhode island report podcast headed to north providence, where yacht club soda recently launched its latest soda pop poll: a rematch of donald’s trumpian punch vs. joe’s bidenomics berry.

Yacht Club Soda, a company based in North Providence, Rhode Island, has launched Soda Pop Poll pitting Joe's Bidenomics Berry vs. Donald’s Trumpian Punch. Every soda sold is a vote for that candidate to become the "President of Soda Pop." The results will be released in the fall.

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. — With the Republican convention next week, and just five weeks remaining until the Democratic convention, many Americans can’t look away from the drama surrounding the expected rematch between President Biden and former president Donald Trump.

President Biden’s shaky debate performance last month only turned up the heat.

As the summer simmers across much of the country, it’s enough to make almost anyone thirsty.

For this week’s Rhode Island Report podcast, host Edward Fitzpatrick headed to North Providence, where Yacht Club Soda has recently launched its latest Soda Pop Poll from its bottling works in Centerdale.

It’s a rematch pitting Donald’s Trumpian Punch against Joe’s Bidenomics Berry.

Every soda sold is a vote for that candidate to become the “President of Soda Pop.”

To cool down on a hot day, Ed wanted to know, do customers reach for the red bottle or the blue bottle based on politics, or flavor?

Owner John Sgambato told the Globe that the raspberry-forward red fruit punch has been a strong candidate during the last two presidential elections. So this year, the family-owned business has ramped up the blueberry-raspberry flavor of the blue berry beverage, so it’s on par with the punch, Sgambato said.

But what if neither is up to your taste?

In the 2020 Soda Pop Poll , 11 percent went independent. That reflects customers who opted for the Gaspee Point Berrymelon Rebellion, a seasonal flavor that Yacht Club Soda brings back every summer, an homage to the Rhode Islanders who burned the schooner HMS Gaspee in 1772 leading up to the American Revolution.

“We use that as our independent vote because it’s a rebellion, like the Independence of Rhode Island,” Sgambato said.

Results of the 2024 Soda Pop Poll will be released in the fall.

Radio Island Beach Access

Located on the edge of the Bulkhead Channel which leads to the Back Sound, the Radio Island Beach Access is a unique and wonderfully convenient beach destination for both Morehead City and Beaufort visitors. Renowned for its calm waters, sandy shorelines, and location that’s just a few minutes’ drive away from a number of coastal communities, this stretch of slightly inland shoreline that’s managed by the Carteret County Parks and Rec is a popular destination for anyone in need of a little fun in the sun.

The Radio Island Beach Access has ample parking just south of the Radio Island Marina, and from here, visitors can take a stroll along the beach where the waves are gentle, (and generally non-existent), but the views are outstanding. As a result of this calm terrain, the beach is a popular destination for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, and other watersports that are best enjoyed in flat and shallow waters. The area can also be a fruitful shelling destination, as well as a nice spot to spread out a beach chair and catch a few rays. Located just barely off the beaten path, and yet nicely easy to reach, this local beach is a hidden gem destination that both visiting and local beach-goers will adore.
