Olbia is Sardinia’s biggest town and also hosts its airport and port. While many view it as a transit town – and some are put off by the vast number of ferry boats and aircrafts arriving and leaving – it offers a number of sights worth visiting.

Olbia’s most appealing attractions include a couple of beautiful old churches and an archaeological museum. Its historic port, used since pre-Roman times, was in this area, but the main ferry port is now located on an island in the bay.

Olbia’s centre is based around the Corso Umberto, a busy shop-lined street leading uphill from the waterfront. It opens into the Piazza Margherita at the top of a small hill. Several pretty narrow lanes lined with old stone buildings fan out from here, leading to Piazza Margherita and Piazza Matteotti.

Just off Corso Umberto, you can visit the Chiesa di San Paolo, a beautiful church built on the site of an ancient temple. Olbia’s other significant church is just outside the heart of town, a short walk beyond Via Mameli. The Basilica minore di San Simplicio is a Romanesque granite church dating back to the eleventh century.

Other spots worth seeing as you stroll around Olbia are the town’s market square, Piazza Mercato, and traces of Olbia’s ancient past: a stretch of the town’s Punic walls, in a housing area between Via Aquedotto and Via Torino, and a stretch of ancient paving outside the town hall at the harbour end of Corso Umberto.

The location of Olbia

The town can be found in the province of Olbia-Tempio in Sardinia, Italy. The holiday resort shares borders with Alà dei Sardi, Golfo Aranci, Monti, Sant’Antonio di Gallura, San Teodoro, Arzachena and Padru. Loiri Porto San Paolo and Telti are also its neighbours.

Can you rent a yacht in Olbia – do I need a license?

Small boats (under a certain horsepower or length), electric boats, crewed yacht charters and gulet charters may not require a license. Larger boats or those with more powerful engines need a skipper’s license. Before you confirm your sailing trip to Olbia, please send us a copy and we will check it for you. You need to have the original copies on board, so don’t forget to take them. Marina di olbia.

Marina di Golfo Aranci

The well-equipped port is only 20 metres from the centre of Golfo Aranci. They have 30 berths for boats as long as 5-16 metres. The depth of the water is 1.5-5 metres. The breakwater provides safety against winds dominant in the area. They offer electricity, Wi-Fi, a bar and a restaurant.

Marina di Porto Rotondo

There are 650 berths here for yachts with a length of 90 metres. The depth of the water is 5.5 metres. They provide fuel, maintenance and medical assistance as well as drinking water, electricity and Wi-Fi.

Porto Cervo Marina

This is one of the best equipped and most welcoming ports on the Adriatic Sea. There are 700 berths available, 100 of which are preserved for yachts passing through. Yachts with a length of up to 120 metres can be docked here. The depth of the water is 1.7-7 metres. Every berth provides drinking water and electricity.

Poltu Quatu

Arzachena’s port, which opened in 1987, is still very popular to this day. They have 305 berths for yachts as long as 8-35 metres. The depth of water is 3 metres around the entrance and 2 metres in the inner dock.

Marina di Cannigione

The port can accept boats with a length of up to 25 metres with its 400 moorings. The maximum depth is 4.5 metres. The beautiful Olbia is well-known for its great restaurants and cosy cafés. If you visit the place, we recommend La Lanterna in particular. Their main speciality is pizza, but you should also try the frutti di mare, the pecorino made from sheep’s milk and the grilled dishes. Besides the delicious food, there is also a wide selection of wines to choose from.

Beaches in Olbia

Saline beach.

The breathtaking beach has a remarkable size with is 1400-metre length. There is red, coarse sand here. If you visit the beach, you must definitely try watersports such as surfing or sailing. The long beach is also ideal for a nice walk.

Dottore Beach

This beach is located in a beautiful and unique natural environment. It is surrounded by green land and there are also marvellous granite rocks here. You can spot tiny colourful pebbles in the white sand. Once you are here, you should try snorkelling and scuba diving.

Porto Istana Beach

This fine beach can be found opposite Tavolara Island. There are rocky areas dispersed in its fine white sand. The beach is tiny with a length of 200 metres; we particularly recommend it to families with children. There is a bar and a restaurant here, and you can rent sunshades and lounges. As for watersports, we can try canoeing, jet-skiing, surfing and sailing.

The port town has a pleasant Mediterranean climate . Summers are hot and dry; in July, the temperature might get as high as 33°C. Winters are mild; the wettest period is between October and December. Do you like swimming? The temperature of the sea may even reach 27°C during the warmest weeks. If you are interested in outdoor tourist activities, we recommend that you visit Olbia between April and October.

Olbia is the fourth largest city in Sardinia and is located in the northeast of the island. It is the ideal starting point for a yacht charter along the beautiful Costa Smeralda, which stretches from here to the northern tip of the island. The wind conditions are constant and the good infrastructure and varied coastline attract many sailors here. From here, it is not far to the hotspots of the radiant Costa Smeralda, such as Porto Cervo . The wind of Mediterranean lifestyle blows through the historic city of Olbia: small, rather winding alleys of the old town meet chic shopping on the Corso Umberto and Romanesque buildings with colorful tiled roofs.

In the bay of Olbia, picturesquely beautiful beaches await you, which, with their crystal-clear water and the characteristically bizarre rock formations, make the hearts of all diving and snorkeling fans beat faster. The beautiful harbor promenade invites to extensive walks with a gelato. The many trattorias and restaurants scattered throughout the city invite you to taste local specialties such as mussels from the Bay of Olbia. In May of each year, the local specialty is even honored with its own mussel festival, where the country, people and guests come together to celebrate and dine. A stroll through the market on Saturday morning on Via San Gallo is an insider tip and is like a cultural event.

Olbia also has a lot to offer in terms of history, with its Romanesque church of San Simplicio from the 3rd century AD, the ruins of a nuraghe fortress that is over 3000 years old and the Sa Testa fountain temple. The remains of Roman settlement, such as the Sa Rughitulla aqueduct, stretch like a net across the entire townscape. With a visit to the archaeological museum on the small island of Peddone, you can delve deeper into the regional history. Olbia's history is fascinating: from Roman times to the first settlements of the Phoenicians in 750 BC.

Near the coast of Olbia are the islands of Tavolara and Molora, which belong to the group of the Tavolara archipelago. In the marine area you will come across hidden highlights such as the wreck of the ship Chrisso in Porto San Paolo, the natural pools of Molara island and the picturesque beach of Tavolara island. Therefore, worthwhile destinations for diving and swimming fans.

Arrival: You can reach Olbia airport (OLB) by a direct flight from Germany in about an hour and a half. From the airport it is not far to the city and coast. Thus, you can reach the marina in Olbia by cab, shuttle or bus in just 15 minutes. Alternatively, if you are traveling by car, you can choose a ferry crossing from mainland Italy. From Genoa or Livorno you can reach the ferry port in Olbia in about 10 and 7 hours respectively.

Heading northeast - The Maddalena Archipelago and southern Corsica

From Olbia to the north, the beautiful Costa Smeralda lies ahead of you. Especially the area of the Maddalena archipelago off the northeastern tip of Sardinia with the main island of the same name should not be missed. There, more than 60 larger and smaller islands with many beautiful highlights await you very close to the Costa Smeralda: Pristine sandy beaches, picturesque bays with crystal-clear water shimmering in blue and turquoise tones and bizarre-looking, thousand-year-old granite rocks create the best atmosphere for boating, swimming and sunbathing vacations with plenty of swimming and diving fun. The main island of the same name, meanwhile, invites you to stroll along the piazzas and waterfront promenades.

For experienced sailors with a time account of more than a week, excursions to Corsica are also an option. The Bonifacio Strait, located between the southern tip and Santa Teresa Gallura in Sardinia, is a challenging passage with its jet and cape effects as well as shoals and sea currents, which is rewarded with the coastal panorama of Corsica. The southern tip of Corsica impresses with the town of Bonifacio , perched on a 60-meter white chalk cliff above the sea. The small town resembles a fortress, the rock immediately merges into the houses. The town has some highlights to offer, like the gothic church Saint Dominque. To the west is also the Lavezzi archipelago. The southernmost point of France combines a varied flora and fauna and have been under protection since 1982. The islands of Lavezzi, Cavallo and Piana may be entered.

On the way to Corsica, in the Strait of Bonifacio, lies the island of Caprera, the last residence of Giuseppe Garibaldi until his death in 1882, one of the greatest heroes of Italy and its unification history. On Caprera, a picture-perfect natural landscape awaits you, composed of the Monte Teialone and Poggio Stefano mountains, fjord-like bays like Coticcio Bay and beautiful hidden beaches.

In 2018, after twenty years of activity in the charter sector, having had the vision of what could have been the growth prospects of the Eco-sustainable Nautical Tourism sector, the company decided to change gear and starting from the choice of a certifying body expert in the tourist accommodation sector (and not nautical) such as CSQA, revolutionizing its processes in an integral way and completely redesigning the operational model of the activity. It is also the first Nautical Hotel accommodation facility in the world to also have ISO 9001 certification.

The company today offers its customers the opportunity to find the right offer for their holiday by directly visiting the Yachting in Sardinia website where 8 different offers are available every day, valid only for 24 hours, for a fleet of boats that are completely similar. and throughout to floating and completely eco-sustainable housing units, equipped with all comforts and divided into categories (exclusive, comfort and standard). The customer on board receives 24-hour assistance, also thanks to the SeaTutor monitoring system, and can count on a dedicated Service Operator, ready to respond to any needs of the guest crew, giving the customer the opportunity to experience the sea in total safety.

Group Y has been investing for years in the technical set-up of its boats: from the massive use of photovoltaics, to the elimination of endothermic generators, from the use of double alternators combined with automotive-derived battery packs, to the use of watermakers, from use of purifiers, up to the revolutionary "zero" impact underwater protective coating: the SeaProtector, which replaces traditional antifouling, not only improving the performance of the hull by reducing fuel consumption, but, being totally free of biocides toxic, avoid releasing any type of harmful substance into the water.
